  • Metallica or Megadeth? Who’s The Thrash Metal Boss?
Metallica? Or Megadeth? It’s a question that every metalhead has come across and asked themselves since the mid-80s. During that era, Metallica and Megadeth were instrumental in pioneering the genre of thrash. But while Metallica was motivated to forge their own brand of metal, Megadeth was driven by the anger of its frontman, Dave Mustaine, towards his former band, Metallica.
So who among the two can be considered the thrash metal boss, and why? Is it the more popular Metallica, or the more prolific Megadeth? Keep watching until the end as we discuss the music of both Metallica and Megadeth, from their thrash roots in the 80s to their gradual evolution as the years went by, and we settle the score once and for all as to who are the undisputed kings of thrash.
In today's video, we look at Metallica or Megadeth? Who’s The Thrash Metal Boss?...Keep watching to see metallica, and thrash metal. metal, and megadeth. Also heavy metal, and thrash genres. Sometimes I think, out of frustration, that I would accept that they don't induct Megadeth into the Hall of Fame, but at least Dave. He is a key pillar of the entire metal scene since his days with Metallica. Anyway, Megadeth deserves to be in the hall of fame, let's hope Dave lives to see it.

I think the main reason we will never see Megadeth in the Hall of Fame is because really, there’s never been a consistent lineup. Over 20 people have been in Megadeth since the band started. I think once they got to that classic lineup in the 90s if they would’ve kept that lineup together I think that would’ve helped there chances of getting into the Hall of Fame.
Really for the last 20 years, since the 90s ended it’s really just been Dave Mustain solo project. In all honesty that’s all it’s ever really been but if you keep a consistent membership it helps people latch onto the band more because at this point if they put Megadeth in the Hall of Fame who do they in duck besides Dave? Do you and duct 23 people into the Hall of Fame for one band?
I mean I get it it’s hard to find bands that have the same lineup that they had on their first album 20 to 40 years later. In all honesty the only reason we care that Dave is a member of Metallica at one time is because metallic is one of the biggest fans in the world.
More than half the bands that got signed to a record deal in every genre of rock music had a revolving door of musicians in them before they got signed. I was in four different bands from the age of 15 to 31 and I walked away from every one of them at one point. Now if one of those bands goes on to sign a record deal, five years later and they make it big in the ER a band that makes albums and tours for 25 years. I don’t really think I should get any recognition.
And we can’t say “well it’s Metallica “ because before Metallica got signed they’re just like any other band. There are bands that are four times more talented than signed bands that never make it. Metallica could’ve easily not made it.
I’m a fan of both bands but not all of megadeaths problems are the cause of something Metallica did and I really wish Dave would get off it because it’s not like he hasn’t been super successful. Megadeth is the second most successful thrash ban in the history of metal. Them and Metallica are literally the only two thrash metal bands to have multi platinum albums.
I do think Dave deserves respect, but I think his ego is just as much to blame for some of the decisions he’s made the last 40 years as anything else .

For me Megadeth is the better band by a million miles. I’m a much younger fan being 16, but I’ve listened to Metallica for about 5-6 years and just thought their stuff was good. I started listening to megadeth in 2022, and the first song was symphony of destruction. I was blown away. The next song was holy wars and from then on I knew megadeth was the best band I’ve ever heard. I’ve listened to every album thousands of times and I’ve even started playing guitar because of megadeth. So yeah, megadeth wins it for me

If you have listened to every Megadeth album thousands of times then based on hearing each album 2000 times to make it mean "thousands" you would have to listen to them for three and a half years non stop with no breaks whatsoever. So if you are sixteen you need to have started listening to Megadeth when you were twelve. Not trolling I love Megadeth just have so much time on my hands I decided to do the maths 😅

Rust in Peace was the best technical masterpiece thrash metal album ever as far as I'm concerned. Obviously Master of Puppets was a monster of an album in it's own right, but the technicality of RIP was pure God Mode.
I'm glad they kicked Dave out, otherwise we wouldn't have these two great bands. It would be interesting to see what would have happened if Dave remained in Metallica, as I think he's a much better thrash guitarist than Kirk. And perhaps they wouldn't have strayed so far away from their roots...
Glad Metallica have come back to their roots, as I love their last two albums. And you have to give it up to them, those guys are playing very technical and fast music at the age they are at. Bravo.
Tallica and Deth both for the win. But, it should have been the Big 5... As Testament should have been in that lineup IMO.

There is no Thrash Metal without Dave Mustaine--Scott Ian, I think Scott's Comment sums it all up, not to mention Dave personally had dealings with 3 of the big 4 bands, ( Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer). working with Slayers K.K. on Megadeths 1st tour, and of course his contributions to Metallica.

@@edlaw51501 Exodus were showing elements of thrash, as were James and Lars before Dave joined +they had written hit the lights, Motorbreath and no remorse before Dave joined)
But really it bands like Venom that fused NWOBHM and punk together (which is what thrash is really) that inspired bands like Metallica to do the same.

    • @edlaw51501
      @edlaw51501 Рік тому +2

@Deleted Hero I agree with what your saying, Venom played a huge part of what became Thash, but you will have to admit that Venom, early early Exodus sound more NWOBHM, than Thrash, you could go as far as to say Motorhead played a big part in that sound also with Overkill, but they(Motorhead) have widely discouraged their being titled a Thrash band, Dave Mustaine has many times referred to the big 4 as the Big 5 including Exodus as one of the major Thrash bands, maybe "Thrash" did exist prior to Mustaine joining Metallica, and there's more we could say about this but not to make this reply 20 minutes long, in my opinion I personally think Mustaine added or contributed to the Thrash genre so greatly that he should be recognized as a major influential part of the genre and for the most part has stayed on that course more so than Metallica did, but again I fully agree with Exodus and Venom as playing music in the Thrash style early early on. For the record I have never discounted what Exodus did early on and through out their career, I have always felt Gary (Holt) did more for Exodus early sound than Kirk (Hammett) and I say that because I haven't heard alot of Kirk's Exodus stuff but what I've heard is more NWOBHM I think, maybe I'm way off here.

    • @deletedhero5579
      @deletedhero5579 Рік тому +1

@@edlaw51501 Yea I'm not putting it all on Venom but I think a lot of these guys were sticking a lot to the NWOBHM Inspired formula, inspired by diamond head etc and they had speed metal style from Motorhead but those guys had huge punk influences too and I think hearing a band like Venom fuse the two inspired them to do the same.
I think Kirk is a bit underrated in Exodus because he named and formed the band and was at that time their main songwriter, sadly most of the recordings with him are very bad quality, but he did bring the trapped under ice riff to Metallica from Exodus and I think especially back then you could hear Kirk's Exodus style knfluence in the riffs he wrote in Metallica, also Kirk taught Gary Holt to play guitar which is really cool!
And I totally agree Dave Mustaine deserves recognition for his huge effect on the thrash genre, I maintain that he wasn't the sole inventor as some people think and that James and Lars were already toying with the Thrash sound and Lars had the vision for the bands sound before Dave but he was hugely instrumental in it too, especially with Megadeth which gave thrash a new twist and style.

I would say the Deth. Simply because Dave kept it fresh by a revolving door of musos and therefore the thrash was always evolving. Tallica haven't evolved since MOP. They sold out and commercialised their sound for a mainstream audience. Megadeth tried with Risk but failed. That was their only weak moment apart from Super Collider but most of their catalogue is good solid thrash/metal. They're also much better musicians. Virtuosos.Tallica ain't! Also prefer Dave's vocals. They're more distinctive than James with his yeah yeah yeah which gets a bit tedious.

You can’t ever compare Dave and who’s the boss of thrash metal. Dave is the only one who was in Metallica and Megadeth. He’s the only member who can say that. Being in two of the most iconic metal bands ever. Metallica was great at least back then and still are one of the best live shows now. But comparing these two bands to see who’s the better band doesn’t make sense. Dave is just the better musician. That’s the end of discussion. Talented enough to play in both bands and make a career out of being fired.

I okayed Load and hated Reload. Metallica absolutely sold out but when you want to make a living doing what you love to do, you have to sell to the masses to stay alive. Ya have to somehow stay relevant. I was in my early 20's and didn't put that in perspective. It didn't change my opinion of the albums. I rather listen to Megadeth during that period. I also fell into Grunge. I ain't gonna lie. I loved Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Hell, they were heavier than Metallica at that moment. But anyway, Metallica saw how the music industry was changing. Napster gave em the hint of that. It's hard to make money as a band anymore. You have to stay on the road most of your life because album sales money goes mostly to the record label. Hence Metallica touring 3 straight years or more supporting 1 album. Selling merch helps the bands too. Megadeth were/are a great band too. Dave's addictions of course did not help with the adventures of Megadeth. But it was the Black album that catapulted Metallica and I didn't see how or why. It was just another great album. The sun, moon and stars just happened to align for Metallica. Megadeth tried to follow suit but it just didn't happen and would have been weird anyway.

As someone who really does respect, and like both bands a lot, I just can’t get behind like the idea that we should all think Megadeth is a better band just because Metallica became a bigger band.
Comparing the two bands in the 90s, I don’t think it’s really fair to either band. In the 80s OK because the were pretty much even. They were easily probably the two biggest thrash metal bands during the 80s, I’m not saying the best because for one that’s in the opinion of who is ever listening, and I do think Slayer in my personal opinion is a band I like more than Megadeth but as far as things like album, sales and ticket sales, in the 80s, it was not even close. It was Metallica and Megadeth at the top.
The 90s isn’t a story of excuses but circumstance.
And I’m tired of people rewriting history just because saying something over and over again still doesn’t make it true.
Thrash metal did not lose popularity as the 90s came around. It peaked in the early 90s.
Yes, grunge was there but it didn’t take away from metal. Both genres existed. It’s not an either or situation. We weren’t sitting there in the 90s screaming because we really wanted to buy that new Sepultura album but we were told we are supposed to buy a Pearl Jam album instead. Nope I bought my thrash metal albums and I also bought my Alice In Chains albums.
Yes, for Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth most people would say their best albums in their most legendary well-known albums are from the 80s, but here’s the kicker…… more than half the people that would become fans of those bands and I mean more than half like 70 to 80% of them didn’t get into those bands until the 90s.
Yeah, today Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning have both went six times platinum. But if anyone tells you they sold 6 million copies of those albums in the mid-80s, they’re full of shit. Slayers Reign in Blood is a certified Gold album today meeting it is sold 500,000 copies in the United States since it came out. It did not sell 500,000 copies when it came out. It’s sold it since then but when it came out it sold about 100,000 copies barely.
Do you want to know where all of the album sales for Metallica , Slayer and Megadeth came about? Between 1991 and 1994 is when their 80s albums sold, it’s most copies. So are we really going to sit here and say that the genre was dying in the first half of the 90s when that’s when they sold more albums that they ever did before?
Oh, and the entire reason that these albums sold between 1991 in 1994 and you can look up all of this is because of the Black album.
Metallica weren’t the only ones that got rich from the Black album. Sure they made the most from it but that album introduce the world to thrash metal. Tens of millions of people who had never listen to metal before got into the Black album but they didn’t stop there, sure there are some people that just bought the black album and that was it. But for example Cliff Burton never saw any of the Metallica albums go gold let a loan platinum. Master of puppets didn’t sell 500,000 copies and tell almost a year after Jason joined the band. But after the Black album that album Master of Puppets went on to sell 5.5 million more copies.
So can we just stop with this live that everyone was cutting their hair and throwing away their thrash metal albums in 1991? Because actually the opposite happened.
I know it’s hard to believe, but yes, more than one genre of rock music can exist at one time.
No, the other thing about Megadeth putting out more albums than Metallica. Well yeah that’s going to happen. But let’s have the bands switch shoes. Let’s see it’s Megadeth’s Countdown to Extinction that becomes the biggest album of the 90s and it goes on to sell 16 million copies and Metallica’s black album only with double platinum selling 2 million copies.
Megadeth would more than likely put out the same amount of albums in the 90s that Metallica ended up putting out.
It has nothing to do with “who’s more metal “ or “ who’s more dedicated to the studio”
If you have an album that is selling 16 million copies domestically in over 30 million copies worldwide, you’re going to be on the road forever.
Before the Black album, Metallica of had pretty much a similar schedule to Megadeth. Space spend roughly half a year, give or take a month or two making an album, then you tour the United States for about two months, take a couple weeks off then you tour Europe For a couple months. Then you take a month off and then you go back into the studio and start writing again.
Well, when you have the biggest album, not just in metal, not just in rock, but the biggest album of the entire decade, and it’s hitting other countries in waves. So it might blow up let’s say in America in January of one year, it wouldn’t become popular in Japan until November of that year, you can find interviews with the band, and they talk about how all the sudden when they think they would be done touring one of the singles from the black album would blow up in some other country they had never heard of before, so then there going to a new country for the first time.
Jason Newsted actually talked about this in a interview he did in the last couple years how the Black album introduced Metallica to about 20 new countries that they had never toured before.
So no it doesn’t have anything to do with anyone’s worth ethic as a matter of fact Metallica been on the road on tour to support one album for 3 1/2 years is anything but lazy. So you really can’t take points away because they didn’t put out as many albums when the reasoning is because they had one album that was so successful. They actually had to work four times harder than they ever did before with that touring schedule.
If Megadeth was in their position, it would be the same story. You wouldn’t get another Megadeth album for five years because 3 1/2 to 4 years would be touring and then the fifth year they would be back in the studio which is exactly what happened to Metallica .
Like I said, these two bands were in two different planets in the 90s. Megadeth could spend 4 to 6 months in the studio, riding an album and then tour the United States in Europe for four months, and then they’re done. They’re not going to Israel, they’re not going to Argentina. They might be going to those places now, but again it was Metallica being the first metal band to go there.

I mean, if we are talking about in a general sense, its Metallica, obviously i don't think that's arguable. They are household names, my mum knows at least one Metallica song and recognises the name. They managed to bridge the gap between metal and mainstream, which to be honest i don't think anyone has really done so since (maybe slipknot, Rammstein or ghost? but thats a push) They were for many, myself included, my entry point to the genre, i remember listening to master of puppets in my friends car when i was maybe 17 and i was like "holy shit, what is this glorious passage i am hearing", and i've been hooked ever since.
However if we are strictly speaking 'Thrash' in general. Its Megadeth, and i think any major fan of the genre would agree with me in saying that. And if not, i think we can all at least agree 'Rust in Peace' is the QUINTESSENTIAL trash metal album. Subsequently, a year later Metallica responded (if you want to think of it that way) with the black album, and while obviously it was their smartest move for their music, since it is what shot them into the mainstream, it was obviously a major departure from thrash, and to be honest it had to be that way to be successful. Leaving Megadeth to be crowned kings, and then to remain kings with amazing albums back to back (to back) with Countdown to Extinction & Youthanasia
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

Neither. Slayer is. Their the only band from the big 4 of thrash that didn't sell out or try to change their style to fit in with what was popular at the time. Metallica stopped being a metal band after the tour for Justice was over and Megadeth hasn't released a good album since Rust. Poor Anthrax has pretty much been forgotten. I liked The Sound of White Noise but they got rid of their front man to try and better fit in with the whole grunge thing. Out of those three Anthrax has made the best music after the in which the band's fundamentally changed. Even Slayer's sorta attempt at "Nu-Metal" isn't bad, which is the only time I think they bowed to the pressure to compromise their music. I also don't care if people are sick of hearing assholes like me rip on Metallica. They deserve it. They named themselves after a genre of music then stopped playing the genre. If I go into a place called "Ron's Famous Catfish Shack" and all they have on the menu is fried chicken I'm gonna wonder why they named the place what they did.

It's an extremely tired and tedious question. The last time Metallica had a truly colossal, hugely popular album was 33 years ago. Let me say that again. It's been thirty-three years since Metallica published a proper album. They've literally been coasting on their global reputation ever since, while creating absolutely nothing in all that time. And Metallica's greatest music was the direct result of the two guys who haven't been in the band for at least 36 years. And the icing on the cake is that Metallica's Lux Eterna is laughably the most Megadeth song I've ever heard since...Megadeth.

@Deleted Hero I cannot begin to imagine which existing members you're referring to, but if you think Metallica's best music was created only after And Justice For All, then we will never agree and this is a pointless argument. If you do understand that Metallica's greatest music was their first four albums (and you'd be correct) but somehow think that Dave Mustaine and Cliff Burton "didn't contribute that much" to - quite literally - creating Metallica's music and overall sound, as well as blatantly influencing that sound well beyond their tenure with the band, then we're in an even more pointless argument.

    • @deletedhero5579
      @deletedhero5579 Рік тому +1

@@headhunter8106 Cliff did to an extent but Dave didn't as much.
Dave helped write 4 songs on kill em all - 3 being probably the weakest on the album and 2 of his riffs were used on the second album - which has about 60 riffs in total, so minimal. His 'influence' is also highly exaggerated, let's not forget Dave came from a glorified glam band and Lars had to school him on European proto thrash bands to change his writing.
Cliff again hardly wrote anything - 6 riffs on ride the lightning and only 3 on master of puppets but at least he had more Influence, broadening James's writing away from simple thrash and adding harmonies and more dynamics. Anyone who thinks Dave and cliff were the big contributors in the band just have no idea what they are talking about, even Kirk wrote more then them both on the first 3 albums and James, of course, wrote the high majority.
So yes the first 4 albums are the best but that's mainly to do with James, followed by Kirk, cliff then lastly Dave for his few contributions on the very earlt stuff.
Lux eterna also sounds like a new hit the lights more than Megadeth

Uhhhhh… Mustsaine created the bands sound which also happens to be the Trash Metal sound in general and wrote most of the biggest songs on the first album and several more that were used on the next two. It is ZERO coincidence that the further away they got from Mustaine’s influence the worse they got. Metallica PEAKED on Kill ‘Em All while Megadeth is still ripping it up to this day.

Also I love polarizing figures and Dave Mustaine is def polarizing. Imo Rust in Peace is the pinnacle thrash album. Ive seen them both live several times, had great experiences, having seen Anthrax a few times and Exodus, its hard to leave them out of the conversation. Never had the opportunity to see slayer live, but they are one of the big 4 for a reason. In the end, I always go back to Megadeth....
