    For an instrument that you can spend whole life mastering...not expensive at all - it's a true beast in small form, versatile with a beautiful sound. With an SH-01a next to it you will feel no limits whatsoever. I'm glad those boutiques evolved so far...

      Totally agree. My gear habit has been forcing other synths to move to shelves, but I keep the SH-01A and SE-02 on my desk where I can easily reach them because they're both so great. I can always find a place for them in any track.

    You reviews always have a great balance. A good look at the features without so much detail I could just read a webpage, and a great look at the sounds. And in looking at the sounds it’s not just a run through of sounds, you always put it in a musical context.
    I would love to see it in a workflow context, how creative you are with it. How it integrates with your other gear, etc.

  • @ohstirfry

    Bo you can now update and have an added 128 presets in a new bankD as well as added fine tune controls for pulse width modulation. And for the knobs the only issue is with the filter. It would be nice to get the studio Electronics SE-02 breakout box to have a big fat filter knob for more precise control of the filter.

    Hi Bo. Nice video again - would we expect anything else? You asked for our questions, so here are mine: I would like to know just how "Moogy" is it? How does it compare to the actual Moogs which you own and use already (I believe you have a Sub37 and a Mother 32)? Could you do a comparison between the 37 and the 02? I had a play on one of these in my local store but found it fiddly and difficult compared to the SH01A which I own (ok, I know that's a much simpler synth). Would like to know what you believe it is good at. Moogy bass, razor sharp leads, sound FX?
    Is it good value to a Behringer D?
    The form factor...
    To me it depends on what model Boutique, the VP-03 has less knobs and sliders and also fits on top of my Jupiter 50. The other Boutiques are a bit more difficult to use in terms of ergonomics.
    Then there is price. For the price of three Boutiques you could also consider a System 8...or a DSI MOPHO 4 and if you push even a DSI REV2.
    Soundwise imho all the Boutiques sound very good.

    Hey Bo, great video! The SE-02 is a very powerful and underrated analog mono due to Behringer Model-D hype. I’ve been considering the SE-02 but have now started GASing for the Moog Subsequent CV 37... I have a Sub37 and it’s dark character for bass. Both SUbsequent 37 and SE-03 are bright and would be great lead compliments. What would you recommend and pick?

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому +2

    • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
      @RoomAtTheTopStudio 6 років тому +1

      BoBeats I agree with you there Bo. Two Sub37 tribute and a Subsequent CV isn't really appealing to me. Most people who had both ended up getting rid of one. This is the only boutique that I have ever really been interested in from Roland. If I purchased one it would be for a portable studio set up which I am contemplating

    • @shawnsaul7759
      @shawnsaul7759 6 років тому +1

      Luke Kage I currently have only the Sub37. I been thinking about adding either the SUbsequent CV37 or Roland SE-02. I like how the expanded headroom in SUbsequent 37 gives a more bright and open tone that would be nice for leads with Sub37 hitting dark bass tones. However, the SE-02 has a nice mod matrix, nice tones and is 1/3rd the price. What would you pick?

    • @RoomAtTheTopStudio
      @RoomAtTheTopStudio 6 років тому +1

      Shawn Saul I would go for the SE-02 out of the two of them. I admit that I am a Moog fan and if money wasn't an option I would say go for a Moog Model D re-issue if you want bright and also something that already is and will be a collectors item in years to come. On a budget though I would still choose the SE-02 over the Behringer Model D as it gives a similar tone and it has a great mod matrix and sequencer too.

      I would go SE-02 if you need the effects, but that Berhinger Model D is were I would throw my pesos. Really I guess it depends on your personal style as to which one speaks to you more. I like both. I could easily see my self running the Tempest through the SE-02 effects.

      Bobby Z The price is a steal for what you are getting. Studio Electronics has even said they could not make it for the shipping price, Roland had the manufacturing power to get it out at that low of a price. Not Behringer low cost but still a lot of value.

    Hi Bo, I have a synth/keyboard question that I'm sure you're better qualified than me to answer. So. I need a controller keyboard (the Arturia Keylabs looks good) but would rather spend my (limited) resources on a nice synth/actual musical instrument that could also function as a control keyboard. Of course I wouldn't get a bazillion knobs and sliders that I could freely assign to virtual instruments, but to be honest I don't really need that. A good velocity sensitive keyboard sending midi on/off is the most important thing for me. Arturia's Minibrute seems like a nice instrument, as does the Yamaha Reface CP. Would they both work as simple control keyboards? Or are there any other synths you'd recommend that can also work as controllers? Or am I just being greedy, and do actually need a dedicated control keyboard?
    Thanks!
    jim

    • @BoBeats
      @BoBeats  6 років тому

      I think you are right that a synth is more fun than a midi keyboard. But something like a minibrute doesnt work very well since it does not send midi on the knobs. Monologue does however, and Minilogue.

    • @jimlampshady
      @jimlampshady 6 років тому

      Aha! Nice 1 Bo (and Korg) thanks for the tip. Just checked on Thomann, and the Mini is twice the price of the Mono. Which would you say has more bang-for-your-buck? You have both? Actually, not relevant but I'm anyway interested, would it be vulgar to ask how many synths you do have...?

    • @garyturner5204
      @garyturner5204 3 роки тому

      The Korg Minilogue has mini keys as well. Great sound, but not full sized keys.

    • @garyturner5204
      @garyturner5204 3 роки тому

      Start with the SE-02, get the Roland Boutique Keyboard. Then add a number of other things down the road. The SE-02 has MIDI In and Out so you can connect to a very wide variety of synths and modules. The SE-02 has 512 patch memories, 128 are user writable, so you can create synth sound patches, and easily call them up later on. Most other a]true analogue synths under $500 do not have patch memory storage.

    • @garyturner5204
      @garyturner5204 3 роки тому +1

      The studio Electronics SE-01 is a fairly close clone of the Moog mini Model D, and the SE-02 is an awesome collaboration with Roland and squeezes it all into the Roland Boutique synth form factor, so you can add mini keyboard, or put it in a DK-01 case. It is a great deal for everything that you get I. This tiny box. It even includes standard MIDI In and Out ports too - so get CV/Trigger to MIDI integration to allow you connect to the world of EuroRack synths.
