The thought of messing with a carburetors terrifies me! I knew my carb was bad. I watched your video, bought one of your rebuild kits, and then chickened out. I bought a super cheap reproduction carb instead. Problem solved? Nope. Cheap carb stopped doing its thing after about an hour of use. I realized my choices were to abandon my tractor, buy a real rebuilt 9N carb, or try rebuilding mine. Despite my fear, I dug out the kit I bought from you, re-watched your video and went to work. After only a few minutes at the workbench, my fear turned to enjoyment! I was actually having fun! I realized it wasn't remotely as complicated as I thought, it was more like working on a small puzzle. I took my time and was very impressed - your video was exactly right. I still wasn't impressed my tractor would start, but... it did! I was even inspired to adjust the jets as you showed - fantastic! Thank you so much for these videos. You have given me a great deal of confidence. Bonus points to the production/editing of your videos, they are detailed without being too long.
Rachel, your level of expertise surprises me because your confidence in the repair is easy to follow and very pleasant to say the least. Keep up the great work to keep those tractors running well.
Thank you young lady for keeping all those classic tractors going no matter what make of the tractor they are keep up the great work ,👍👍👍👍😩😁😁😁😊😊😊😊😄😄😄😄🙂🙂🙂🙂😃😃😃😃😀😀😀😀
Thanks for the video. Our 8N was only running on choke. I removed the carburetor and it was obvious right away the spring on the choke plate was broken. I removed the bowl and gave it a quick clean up and it runs great now. The air filter tube is the biggest challenge in my experience. I'll order your kit and rebuild the whole thing when I get around to it. Who would have thought this old tractor would still be doing work 70 years later.
Had a problem with my Ford8n. Saw this UA-cam video and thought I'd follow her on every aspect, even the turning of the screws. When finished... it started right up and runs perfectly. Thank you so much for your videos! Will be ordering parts through your site. Phil
Drove tractors on my two Uncles farms in Iowa when I was only 14. When I was asked what I did all summer I said worked on Dads brothers farms. My elderly uncles still ask me if I remember driving the tractors.
I am mechanically inclined but I sure am open to taking a lot of your advice and knowledge and you are easy on the eyes too thank you. Just got through adjusting the new carburetor. Runs like a new one had the tractor 9N Ford with Sherman gears had it about 20 years now changed electronic ignition 12 volt all of that do some work on valves all myself runs perfect we have a newer tractor but I keep this for mowing in the woods and certain places.
When you look at the choke plate in the video at the beginning it is facing the opposite direction when you reinstall it. Installing it with the flap in would allow the engine to get some much needed air and the spring would control the flow
Great Video, I just finished rebuilding the carburator on my Ford 8N and it installed in less than 20 minutes. Did not get the tractor to start, but I may not have spark. I will have to watch your video on trouble shooting. Like a fun puzzle! thanks so much for your great Hoe to videos! Keep posting, I will keep braking my tractors!
This video really helped me double check and trouble shoot my MS carb... my tractor wouldnt start and stay running without choke yesterday now its running decent thank you so much. I STRESS THAT COMPRESSED AIR BE USED TO BLOW EVERY SMALL ORFICE OUT...if not it wont fuel properly also a torch tip cleaner is your friend. Something Ive seen no one cover on youtube. Like she said 2 turns on main screw not 1.5 funny thing my 2n and her machine run at 2.5 turns on main And 1 to 1 and quarter (1.25 turns) on the idle screw and Learn the details folks... theres plenty of misinformation out there.
She’s gonna be a catch for some lucky mid-western fella. Everything she said I already knew was 100% correct and she said quite a few things I didn’t know regarding intricate adjustments and such.
I loved your tutorial! I ordered the comprehensive kit and all the other parts you mentioned. My Ford 8N has been out in the barn for a few years. Looking forward to tuning it up myself and getting her going! Thank you! Lynette
I have an 8N, and the carb needed to be rebuilt; bought a kit and tried doing it myself, but had trouble with the throttle butterfly plate...ended up breaking the spring, and just bought a whole new carb. The butterfly shown in this video looks much easier to install; I'll keep this in mind for next time.
Great videos, Rachel. Please check at 11:40 to 12:20 in this video. I think you may have the choke butterfly door backwards. My original 8N (with a M-S TSX 241B carb), three other video presentations and what looks like a Ford manual drawing has the little trap door on the inside. After seeing yours, I thought it may provide relief to a backfire but after checking more, it seems that it is rather supposed to let air in when vacuum is momentarily high but choke is full on. That would put the door on inside...like in my tractor and the other references. I may be wrong, but would like to confirm. Thanks and keep it up!
I'm in agreement with you here. I assembled mine with the spring behind the butterfly and the air trap swing inward, allowing airflow past to prevent straight out flooding situations.
High quality work on both the video and the rebuild. Very helpful in my soon to be endeavor of rebuilding my father-in-laws tractor carburetor. Great job. Thank you.
Somewhere out there is a proud father and possibly a lucky husband. Rarely do we see women like this, I was very surprised with her knowledge and she's very good at explaining the whole process. Very good video I know who I'll buy parts from next time they are needed.
Chris, You are correct, Rachel installed the choke plate the wrong direction. With the flap on the wrong side, the flap mechanism will not work properly. Beginning at 0:50 you can see that it was originally oriented correctly.
Rachel I watched your video "dumbfounded" for your quiet beauty. I would like or need to learn a little more English. I have to accustom my ear to listen and then try to improve in speaking. Of course I have to tell you that what you do, you do very well and make it look easy. Congratulations. I will become a fan of you.
I bought a 49 8n with a 51 motor from coulter's in north Branch michigan in the early 2000s that your dad put together when Dan's equipment was in metamora.i sold the 8n to my cousin who lives in metamora.
Another good video... you provided good instructions so basic mechanical skills, no problem... I have replaced the throttle/butterfly shaft, do to excess wear,, will let air in, not good
I honestly just chose this carb rebuild video because I thought the lady was pretty haha. Glad I did, this explains a lot about why different kits replace different parts.
Last Marvel carb I tore down didn't have a single jet in it. Tractor ran pretty good... rich under load, but surprisingly good. Spring was missing on the choke plate as well. Nowhere to be found. Somebody had obviously been there before me. Not sure what their plan was though.
Thank you for the very informative video! I am about to tackle mine, just ordered the kit and float from y’all. One question for clarification though. The butterfly on my choke rod had the spring and trapdoor to the inside when I disassembled it. From what I understand is it’s to allow air to the engine on startup if you don’t release the choke when it starts. Yours is to the outside so the trap door would be ineffective wouldn’t it? Again just asking for clarification before I reassemble mine when parts arrive. Thanks again.
Maybe it was worth mentioning that when assembling brass parts it's good to turn counterclockwise until you feel the threads line up. You did this but it would have been a good mention.
If you need to adjust the float level you want to very careful not to damage the needle. Adjust the tab with a pair of pliers off the carburetor. Pushing down on the float can damage the needle.
Great video but I have a couple questions. At 11:44 you say that the spring of the flap on the choke butterfly will face out when it is installed. But the spring and flap look like they are facing inside at 1:42 during disassembly. And I don't see how the spring loaded flap will work if it is facing out. I'm in the process of rebuilding a carb using your comprehensive kit and the and was hoping you could clear this up for me because my carb was already completely disassembled when I got it and the paper instructions do not address this. Also, there are several small gaskets that are about the same size but different colors (one is thin & red, while 1 is thicker and grey) but the paper instructions do not make it clear which gasket goes where.
Great video, quite thorough. I would like to have had a better view of the gasket on the Main Adjustment Needle, to see if it was metal, plastic, rubber or felt. The kit my vendor sold me had some bits that weren't exactly like my 241B and he wasn't as knowledgable as you about what went where.
Thank you so much for your video. I learned so much. I just bought a 1949 Ford 8N and I am ready to bring it to life. At the moment it dies when under load .... so I think it may required a Carb Rebuild and a float adjustment. How do you keep your hands so clean? Amazing !
Rachel I need to know if the charging system you have for sale will fit work on my 1985 Ford 555D Backhoe. I bought a brand new alternator but it does not put out 13 volts. I have an ignition on order hoping that will fix it. If not I was going to buy the one you have sale. I do like your videos.
Question. Bought an Amazon 8n carb. It worked great for a year. Then one day slowly lost power over a period of 10 minutes. Now it only runs with the choke on and at lowest throttle. Try to increase it dies. Carb is spotless. Good fuel. Runs with starting fluid. Pulled out drain plug in float bowl and fuel flows good. Sprayed starting fluid around to check for leaks and no change in speed. Buying a new carb since it’s the only thing I can think of. Something is plugged in the carb but all jets are spotless. Uff da….
Hey Girl!! Need your help ❤ I have a 53 Jubilee and I can't get it started. 1st of all, it has always fired right up. Even after a cold winter in the elements. Then the front "bracket" that the loader pin sits in got stripped. I replaced that, so it's tight and spinning now. However, it ran for a min and then won't turn over. It tries but can't kick on. I smell fuel, so I've been told it's flooded.
The only thing I would add is check the flatness of the top flange, many of them are warped from over tightening. I gave mine a ride on some 220 wet/dry paper and a surface that is known to be flat. I did the same on the bowl and top but there was nothing much wrong that the gasket would not have sealed. The top flange on mine was warped pretty bad to the point I felt it would leak air.
Question: I'm rebuilding a TSX 241B, there does not appear to be a "passageway" (jet?) under the emulsion tube (there is a plug in the vicinity in the bottom of bowl). Is there suppose to be something between the emulsion tube and the plug on the TSX 241B? Once the carb is done I'm ready to tackle the hydraulic in the top lid.
Rachel, thanks for the videos! Awesome job. I am rebuilding my MS Carb and have watched your video so many times to ensure I do it correctly. I did have two questions though. I noticed that you flipped the choke door from the position it came out. The flat side was facing out before you tore it down, and when you reassembled, you put the spring side facing outward. It must not have mattered because your tractor started. Also, you showed the 3 jets in the video, but, you did not talk about the 3d jet that goes in the side in the throttle body (close to the other jet). Am I correct to think that you were working on a "B" MS Carb? We love professional videos. There are many videos on UA-cam, but, hate the ones that just show people doing something without explaining what they are doing and are on fast speed...useless. Thanks and have a great day!
What is the blade size on that long screw driver that you use, that used to be your Grandfather's? I don't want to strip it out. Thanks! My kit arrives tomorrow so I want to be ready!
Do you have an instruction video on how to adjust an aftermarket carb float. Tractor dying when driving on incline only. All filters cleaned, tank cleaned, lines flushed, breather cleaned, tank cap breather good, runs perfect on flat surface. I'm perplexed. My dilemma is that I'm 3 1/2 hours from tractor where it's broke down at another marketplace sellers home. Any help you can advise would be appreciated.
Good video, It would have been a great video if you had talked us through the teardown process. You struggled with removing some parts, and it would have been nice to know what was going on. Otherwise, it was very informative, thank you for putting the time and effort into bringing these old girls back to life, and sharing your knowledge with the rest of us grease monkeys.
Hey Rachel this John nice to meet you. I work at Bell Equipment Im new to your channel . I was watching your video and I was wondering if Im doing something wrong I didn't replace the float even thou it's pretty green I cleaned it up some but prolly not enuff I set the idle and the throttle . the big one 2 full turns and the idle one full turn out to start like you said and I could get it to fire and run a little . but when i first swapped the motor it was driving and running . it kinda progressively ran rougher till I cleaned the carb then it started to smell better when it ran a little but i can't seem to get it quite right. Its not wanting to take off and idle. I love to buy a preset carb from you or invite you out to the shop to help me with this one. Your very beautiful and insightful .
Great videos do you have one on points and condenser? I tried finding spark plug wires and distributor cap for my 52 8n on that site but nothing came up? Thank you
I have a 9n. It died one day and wldnt restart. Since then I have pull the entire system apart. Put a brand new carb on. New point cap rotor and plugs. Checked the compression which is 130 at each hole. Timed the 12 volt distributor. Triple checked that I have gas and spark. I still can’t get it to run. It try’s to start. And the I’ve got it to do with all that is run for maybe 39 seconds. It ran great until it died. Am I missing something?

Be glad you bought her kit, my vendor sold me a cheapo kit that leaves me with some concerns after assembly. I'll bolt it on soon and see how it went.
The way you have finished with "give you the confidence" in your videos has motivated me.
Ur team is thorough.
Rachel, your level of expertise surprises me because your confidence in the repair is easy to follow and very pleasant to say the least. Keep up the great work to keep those tractors running well.
She's good. Better than most guys when it comes to tractors anyway.
Thank you young lady for keeping all those classic tractors going no matter what make of the tractor they are keep up the great work ,👍👍👍👍😩😁😁😁😊😊😊😊😄😄😄😄🙂🙂🙂🙂😃😃😃😃😀😀😀😀

followed you step by step and just finished my TSX 241B 8n rebuild. Thank you so much for these videos!
You are one of a kind. Your Dad must be proud!
I watched this video as I went through my carburetor and it made it a breeze! Thanks Rachel.
Drove tractors on my two Uncles farms in Iowa when I was only 14. When I was asked what I did all summer I said worked on Dads brothers farms. My elderly uncles still ask me if I remember driving the tractors.
Just got my '52 8N back together and referred back to this video for adjustment reference points. Thank you all so much!
I just fell in love with your videos, my tractor sat for years. Started right up with your carb adjustment video.

Can anyone tell me is the same oil in my rear end on my 8n ford tractor is it the same as the oil that makes my lift move ?
@@davidbaxter4235 yes
Hi Dan- I am a follower of your work in tractor maintenance, from Saudi Arabia and thank you
Great video. I work on cars and trucks but I just bought an 8N so I’m glad to learn about these machines. Thanks.
When you look at the choke plate in the video at the beginning it is facing the opposite direction when you reinstall it. Installing it with the flap in would allow the engine to get some much needed air and the spring would control the flow
Yep - my Ingersoll Rand had a choke lever on the other side, too. Still, nice job overall.

Great job Rachel really enjoyed the video. Your instructional narrative is easy to understand it's lucid and well thought out. Thank you.

That self-starting screwdriver just blew my mind. I can't believe I never knew about them!
I watch so many tutorials on UA-cam that are awful. This is fantastic, great work.
I loved your tutorial! I ordered the comprehensive kit and all the other parts you mentioned. My Ford 8N has been out in the barn for a few years. Looking forward to tuning it up myself and getting her going! Thank you!

Nice job! I love some of the small details that protect sensitive and fragile parts.
Easy to follow no over the head talk ! very much appreciated ! Keep it up - We thank you !
thank you- this video is very instructional- you dont assume I know something that I dont -you explain things simply and completely
I have been a mechanic for over 50 years, and your video is both comprehensive and very easy to follow. Thank you for a great video!!
there are many many men who would love your knowledge, love you from uk.
I have watched you in this video so many times just to hear you speak!

I'm in agreement with you here.
I assembled mine with the spring behind the butterfly and the air trap swing inward, allowing airflow past to prevent straight out flooding situations.
Thank You Rachel , I will order the full comp. kit with the float . Love your instructional videos .
Just ordered a kit. Thank you for your teaching
High quality work on both the video and the rebuild. Very helpful in my soon to be endeavor of rebuilding my father-in-laws tractor carburetor. Great job. Thank you.
Nice job! If I can't follow that, I shouldn't even be allowed to own a 2N. You rock.
Great job Rachel. Smart, concise and very logical.
Somewhere out there is a proud father and possibly a lucky husband. Rarely do we see women like this, I was very surprised with her knowledge and she's very good at explaining the whole process. Very good video I know who I'll buy parts from next time they are needed.
is the Choke Plate put in properly? My choke plate was the other direction when I took it apart...You and your Dad do a Great job!

Thank you again for a highly informative video.
ultrasonic cleaner.. best invention ever for cleaning
silly, they're not an invention. They're magical.
Smart and beautiful. Thank s . love your videos. Very informative.
Thank you Rachel awesome tutorial
Maybe it was worth mentioning that when assembling brass parts it's good to turn counterclockwise until you feel the threads line up. You did this but it would have been a good mention.
I've rebuilt a few and there's decent money in these. I keep all I can original except gasket.
Well Rachel love the tutorials keep them up. I would love to see some tutorials on a Allis Chalmers WC.
You have the best video's. Pretty and smart.
Thank you so much for your video. I learned so much. I just bought a 1949 Ford 8N and I am ready to bring it to life. At the moment it dies when under load .... so I think it may required a Carb Rebuild and a float adjustment. How do you keep your hands so clean? Amazing !
Great tutorial! that you Rachel!
Thank You for posting this video! Ready to install my rebuilt carb!
great video/ awesome carbs .. very basic.. luv em..
Great video. Wish I would've watched before I rebuilt mine. Mine ran anyway, but it would have been easier to start off with.
Excellent video! Keep them coming!
Phenomenal video and very educational.
Well spoken, very informative. Thanks for a great video! God Bless!
are you sure the choke plate is installed correct when closed with the spring shown out

Hi, great videos, why does the carburetor leak? You left the tube off to check that.
With all your experience what tractor would you recommend for overall dependable for small farm work.
Do you have an instruction video on how to adjust an aftermarket carb float. Tractor dying when driving on incline only. Hi Rachel, my Marvel carburetor does not have a clip that connects the needle to the float. Was that an after thought or am I missing a part?

Great video
