  • In this next episode of the route learning series, we take a journey between London Bridge and London Victoria via Denmark Hill. This is a remake of one of the earliest videos I made. This scenario is set in 2004, so you have the chance to see a wide variety of liveries in action. The train I am driving is the Armstrong Powerhouse Class 456, and stops along the way include South Bermondsey, Queens Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High Street, Wandsworth Road, Battersea Park, and London Victoria.

    Love this series, not least because you have such a calm, relaxed voice.

    London Overground run a part of this service. Like the view above South Bermondsey station which is close to a football stadium, Millwall. Grovesnor Bridge is the one that crosses the river Thames then it is roughly half a mile into London Victoria. Cannon Street, Charing Cross and Blackfriars as we know are very close to the river Thames.

    Great video. I got a formation reminder today from my mate who drives for Southern. Might help me stop at the right cat stops.

    Weak field isn't actually full power, as that would be acchieved in series (if it is in the game, it's not being simulated right). There is an initial surge of current when it engages, though, which causes a burst of torque. But, actually, parallel and then weak field trade off power and accelleration for higher motor rpm.
    In the standard game, this is most notable in the Deltic, where the field reduction kicks in automatically at certain speeds. If you don't have your wits about you and haven't taken out notches which don't affect the current through the traction motors as the stator saturates, you will spin the wheels when the field reduction kicks in.
    Luckily, EMUs in real life and in the game benifit from either electromechanical or electronic control to safeguard against driver abuse. I think it's actually pretty awesome the early ones like the Class 423 retain their ability to be notched manually in the game. As much as is wrong about the basics in train simulator (it's the crudest true vehicle sim I'm aware of), it's good to see dedicated people really pushing to get it to behave authentically.

      I hate to be the guy saying “acktually” here, but series halve the voltage to the motors. Therefore, parallel gives the maximum voltage, and then you get weak field on the parallel setting.
      Interestingly, some trains (the Dutch ICM) also have field weakening on their series settings, giving (of the top of my head) at least 9 power settings.

      @@gwyneddboom2579 actually, no. Series, as the name implies, puts the motor windings in series (thus indeed halving the volage over each winding), but the voltage is the same as for the parallel setting. As an MSEE I think I have an inkling of how electric motors work. Perhaps I didn't explain clearly enough or there's a language issue I, as a non-native speaker, am not aware of, but the gist of what I said should be sound.
      And, yes, field weakening does also work in series mode, but the principle stays the same, you're trading off the amount of work the motor can do for higher rpm.

    In regards to the section between Wandsworth Road and Battersea Park, I believe LO operate a couple services a day to Battersea but at unorthodox times. One early morning and one late at night. So Platform 2 gets very little use and Platform 1 is closed now I think.

    London Overground run a parliamentary service (2 t.p.d.) between Wandsworth Road and Battersea Park. One of the tracks is still there. Londonist did a video covering it.

    the trains always slowly crawl away in every video intro, someone should make a full run timelapse... i can't believe they did not manage to fix these bugs in all these years of DLC rampage

      @@PTGRail I can think back to Dartford via Greenwich and Woolwich Arsenal from Cannon Street nowadays. Greenwich and Woolwich Arsenal are on the same Woolwich line. Some of the trains stop at Slade Green, the one before Dartford or the first from the latter towards the heart of the capital.

    How did you even get this route to work without it dumping when you load in?

    • @PTGRail
      @PTGRail  7 років тому +1

      Checo although I didn't have to for this particular scenario, the answer is to turn down the image quality/scenery quality in the graphics settings (can't remember the exact name), and then it should work okay. :)
