  • The first driver's eye view video of 2024, Through the Chiltern Hills will take us over Chiltern Railways second main route from Aylesbury Vale Parkway to London Marylebone, half of that route will then take on Metropolitan tracks between Amersham and Harrow-on-the-Hill.
We then get the delights of travelling over the single line from Princes Risborough to Aylesbury, a route which was opened by the Wycombe Railway in 1863. Filmed in the winter of December 2023, it was quite wet in some parts so there are water marks on the train cabs windows but only for a short time.
Narration is included of the route talking about the history of the former Great Central and Metropolitan Joint Railway, in addition to other intresting facts along the way. Your support for this channel is always appreciated, so please continue to like, comment, subscribe and even share this video and stay tuned for more driver's eye views coming soon. Thanks to all the Chiltern Railways staff who helped with this production. Without further or do, sit back relax and enjoy this driver's eye view Through the Chiltern Hills.

The out of cab shots to compliment this video along with the commentary is top notch.

That was a pleasant trip down memory lane, as a secondman and later as a young driver at OOC, we worked the early morning parcels and paper train from Paddington usually consisting of 5 vans hauled by a class 31. Semaphore signalling was 'de riguer' in those days including collection of the token between Princec Risborough and Aylesbury. Thanks for sharing.

Good to see so many of the station buildings haven't been replaced with bus shelters.

I used to live at little kimble about 10 years ago and was only a few miles from checkers and used to catch the train frequently from little kimble to aylesbury or princes risborough which as was explained in the video it was an hourly service in either direction which was a pain which there was a bus but at the time had to walk 20 minutes either to the station or the nearest bus stop but luckily the bus went passed our house which was much better fond memories

Great work as usual Paul, we've missed you. Hopefully more in the pipeline, perhaps some more London Underground or maybe even some Southern / Southeastern routes.

Back in Great Central and LNER days most of the express trains from the north would not have used this route. They would have taken the alternative route at Grendon Underwood Junction, near Calvert and, at Ashendon Junction, joined what is now known as the Chiltern Mainline but was known then as the Great Western and Great Central Joint line, passing through Gerrard's Cross and High Wycombe and taking the current route of the Chiltern Mainline to Marylebone, via South Ruislip, Wembley and Neasden, where the route rejoins the line featured in this video.

Why dont those diesel trains have a pickup so it can use the electric south of amersham to reduce pollution?

Honestly, I didn't find them too bad. £38 return from London
(Northolf Park) to Stratford is quite good when the other route I take for a similar journey time (London to Weymouth) is £67 return.

Disappointing visual quality - too much of the screen captured, driving into the light. Shame, it's a great route, well described.

Personally, I prefer the wide view enabling sight of the surrounding scenery and infrastructure. I find it much more informative.
