Buying fittings and hoses can be a nightmare when setting up a dust collection system for your shop. I have 4" hoses from Woodcraft and some fittings from Woodcraft. The inside diameter of a 21' Rockler flex hose is smaller and many of the Woodcraft 4" fittings won't work. If I was just getting started with dust collection, I'd pick one system and stick with it as much as possible. It's worth setting up but can be aggravating!! :)

Great video! I have a suggestion for your Festool dust extractor. As you know, Festool filter bags are expensive. It's worthwhile to add a cyclone unit to capture most of the dust before entering the filter bag.
Oneida makes a cyclone unit which fits on top of the dust extractor. (At least they did at one time. I purchased one at an auction and like it a lot.)
A less expensive solution is this:
Cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to fit on top of the Festool dust extractor.
Get a few rare earth magnets and mount them on the top of the plywood.
Go to Lowes and buy a small metal bucket. The magnets will hold the bucket on the plywood on top of the dust extractor.
Buy some 1/2" pipe insulation and run it around the top of the metal bucket for an air seal.
Cut plywood about 1" bigger in diameter than the top of the metal bucket.
Buy a Oneida Dust Deputy and mount it on the plywood which will fit over the top of the metal bucket.
In Lowes plumbing, get some rubber gasket material to seal the hole in the plywood the Dust Deputy mounts over.
Get a couple of quick clamps.
Use the quick clamps to hold down the plywood with the mounted dust deputy.
The quick clamps can clamp to the metal handle holders on the side of the bucket and the the plywood.
Get appropriately sized flex hose to connect the out feed of the Dust Deputy to your Festool dust extractor, and appropriate sized fitting to connect the intake of the mini cyclone.
When you want to dump the dust, loosen the quick clamps and remove the plywood/dust deputy. Lift up the metal bucket off the magnets and dump the dust in the trash can.
You'll find your Festool filter bags fill much, much less frequently.

Excellent video!! I have the Festool CT24E and love it especially for sanding. I also use it on my mid sized lathe when I am doing finish sanding on it. The lathe is by far the dirtiest tool in the shop. I made a cloth shroud out of polyester cloth I got at Hobby Lobby and clamped it to my DeWalt 12in chop saw that collects 90% of the dust that I use a Rigid 5 gallon shop vac on. I have a bag inside the shop vac that helps a lot. I do the same thing you do with flex hoses in my small shop. I am also the only guy in there. I have made much use out of PVC pipe for fittings all over the shop. I just don't have the room for a large dust extractor like your Laguna so I am very very jealous. Finally I also have the cheap chinese version of your Laguna air filter. Works amazingly well. Thanks for all the good information and explanation.

Very informative video. Covered a lot of ground.
I got the same connections for the dust box I built for my router table (set in the extension wing of my table saw). Connected to my Dust Right 750 Mobile Dust Collector, it gets everything, just like your set up.
I added one of those pinwheel vents to the opposite side of the dust box (opposite the dust collector port) to get that airflow you created with those 5/8" holes. I can adjust it to get the perfect amount of flow whether I have the fence hose connected or not. Works great.

Part of me wants to get after you and tell you to keep it simple and stopped using all these fancy tools that no one can afford.
But then I reflect on it, and realize if I had those tools I would be using the exact same tools.

A big shop vac with a cyclone separator is a good start. You can get HEPA filters even for a Rigid shop vac, but it will clog up in no time without a good separator in front of it. I’m a big fan of Rockler but that Dust Right separator was barely effective for me. I have an Oneida Dust Deputy mounted on a cart with my big shop vac for all of the hand tools and it works pretty well.
For your jointer, put a 45 or 90 degree elbow on the outlet to move your quick connect hose out of the way.

I am currently using a system that connects the mitre saw exhaust to the dust separator, then the separator to the Ridgid shop vac. I have a paper bag in the shop vac as well as a corrugated filter and and exhaust filter on the shop vac. I have a plug in that allows both the tool and the dust units to turn on at the same time. I also have a ceiling mounted WEN air cleaner. Building a table saw off feed table and mobile table saw cart, going to use the same setup (dedicated for just the table saw) for that as the mitre saw one. At the moment, I'm using way too much hose in the setup and I am wanting to shorten up all the runs using PVC to increase efficiency by having less travel length and less friction inside the runs. Your general thoughts on this setup as a whole would be greatly appreciated.

I’m just a garage weekend warrior and have no dust collection right now. I have a question, I want to start investing in dust collection. Does the Festool handle the big stuff too? I do a lot of lathe work and table saw work. Trying to decide in between a festool and regular dust collector. My garage is always coated with dust and my wife is fed up with the dust. Very good video. Thanks for the info.

Hello. I don't think you would be happy with the Festool as your primary dust collector because it would fill up so fast. What you could do though is get the Festool for the sanding and other operations and use a dust separator like the dust right to catch the big stuff and keep it from filling up the dust extractor.
