  • Lego is super expensive, so I 3D printed it for free.

    I was just curious to see what homemade Legos might look like.
    The result really is a testament to how refined and high-quality Lego's production line really is.

    Lego bricks are made with a tolerance of +/- 1x10^-6mm. Given that pla has a shrinkage rate of 0.3- 0.5%, means even if you make your part slightly bigger, youre relying on luck to fall in between the tolerances that lego use.

      No, typical injection mold tolerances are closer to +/-0.1mm, you're saying 0.00001mm, which is far beyond what anyone does or has ever done for plastics injection molding manufacturing. You can 3d print at a layer height that's large like 1mm (typical out of the box sizes are 0.3-0.5mm for fdm) and that 0.3-0.5% shrinkage would be negligible already at 0.003-0.005mm. It's pretty easy with a well setup printer to print tight fitting Legos with a 0.1mm nozzle, but it's super slow. Finding the balance between speed and good quality is what's hard. Filament shrinkage at that level wouldn't matter.

    for better bed adhesion i recommend just before printing either applying a layer of glue stick glue to the print bed (that's what i used to use) or a light misting of "Aqua Net All Weather Professional Hairspray" (weird but it works incredibly well, plus its super cheap) i also use an ender 3 with the cr touch and i haven't had to use a brim or a raft yet with these methods.

    to not fail making lego bricks, make them the same size as lego bricks

      But that custom 3D bricks are cool I think if you made the track a bit smaller it might be compatible

    Your heat was probably to high and that's why it's warped.

    none of your prints are sticking because your plate is dirty, you have your finger grease on it haha. Clean it before printing, pre-heat your bed and nozzle and lower your z-axis offset.

    • @brickstudiosYT

      We clean the plate quite often, but I guess not enough 😆

      @@brickstudiosYT I must have been in a bad mood when I wrote this comment yesterday. Why I was being so rude? The world may never know. I watched your video a couple times over at this point. What are you cleaning your build plate with? Honestly, I just use some 99% rubbing alcohol and that’s worked amazing for me. Don’t know if that’s going to destroy my plate but hey 🤷‍♂️ you might also want to make your first layer go super slow, like 20mm. Raise your surface temp like 10 degrees from where you have it for the first layer and raise the nozzle temp by like 10 degrees as well. Blast it with the fan on the first layer and your results should be MUCH better. I’ve got the ender 3 s1 pro and I can print these Legos and they stick just as good as the OG bricks.

      So I clean it with 70% isopropyl alcohol, does that work? And yeah next time I print something I'll make sure to test out those other settings you recommended. Thanks for the tips!

      @@brickstudiosYT one last thing, helped me a bunch when printing super small stuff. Might seem like a no brained… but slow down your print. You might just be trying to print to fast. Also, turn on ironing that will help a tonnn. Good luck and happy making!!!

    • @brickstudiosYT
      @brickstudiosYT  Рік тому +2

      Yeah we're tried turning the speed down and it never really helped with the filament sticking. It must just be some of those other things you said. Yeah, thanks!

    Have you tried measuring the lego bricks and then resizing the 3d printer files? Because every millimeter counts, yes millimeters.
    Edit: if that doesn't work, it's not your fault because the file wasn't made by you.

    • @brickstudiosYT
      @brickstudiosYT  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I didn't try that, but it might be worth a shot

    • @Brakzillaa
      @Brakzillaa 11 місяців тому

      No, that wont work. Taking into account external perimeters. That is the main reason why printed bricks just wont fit, no matter how you calculate it to a real part. You have a higher chance on Resin printers, but even so will need modifications for a real life part that works. I cant tell you how many parts ive printed to try to get everything to fit. lol

    Be careful with the brick because if you connect them together they Might get permanently stuck

    • @brickstudiosYT
      @brickstudiosYT  Рік тому +2

      Yeah I know. Even if one did get stuck I could break the 3D printed one to get them apart. Good thing I didn't have to worry about it though. Thanks for letting me know!
