- Let's tour Spanish Harlem aka "El Barrio" in the East Harlem Neighborhood of Manhattan, NYC. The area was once home to the largest Puerto Rican population outside of the island, but is now home to many other cultures. We'll explore with Ariel from @UrbanistExploringCities a Puerto Rican born New Yorker, (a.k.a a Nuyorican) who will show us places to eat, and things to do in Spanish Harlem! So will you rename your channel Here Be Barrio?
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for inviting me over for this video, John! It was a pleasure showing you some Nuyorican culture here 🇵🇷
Ariel muchas gracias for being a great guide
Yo it's not that we Dominicans claim the mofongo, it's just coming from our ancestors from Africa, peace bro you did a incredible job here
@@1474JOHN haha yea it was just some playful banter :) I totally get that mofongo has African roots, which equally inspired dishes in other countries like DR.
Puerto Rican music is the best. Back in my youth my husband and I danced the night away to Tito Puente and Celia Cruz at the old Palladium Ballroom. No other music compares if you love dancing!
I’m married to a Latin woman but I can’t dance 🤣🤣😂
@@HereBeBarr You did pretty well with that snake like dance at the wedding lol!
The real El Barrio. Finally!
haaha yep.
♥️♥️♥️👍
That’s New York in a nutshell. East Harlem was first Italian then Puerto Rican now Dominican, Mexican and a bit African and Chinese. This over the past 70 years. The transformation is constantly in motion. I love how NY enables recent immigrants to start their American dream. 25 years later, their kids are college educated with great jobs.
🙌🏼
You always see all 3 waves, Euros/AA, ASN/HIS, Out of staters in any part of NYC.
It doesn't matter if it's a strictly Puerto Rican neighborhood or a mix of different ethnicities of different Hispanics and other groups. The neighborhood should still keep the name Spanish Harlem because that's basically it's spiritual legacy.
Italian ,Greeks , Irish them BORICUAS
@@ricanredru4760 YO RIKAN RED 100% MI BARRIO -EL BARRIO - SPANISH HARLEM .
NO ONE CAN TAKE OUR NAME 😜 😜😜😜
Puerto Rican culture and food is fantastic 🥰
Por supuesto
Barr in El Barrio... It was meant to be!
Was bound to happen sooner or later haha
I'm black but miss when Spanish Harlem was Puerto Rican and Harlem was black..
. Old NY.... not the same now
I'm Puerto Rican🇵🇷🇵🇷and Jamaican🇯🇲🇯🇲 and I love both Islands equally the same
My Puerto Rican/Nuyoricans where you at? 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🗽
They mostly moved to Florida...
My mom is PUERTO RICAN 🇵🇷 I LOVE it I wanna visit the famous Spanish Harlem
I feel the same way, miss the old vibe of Spanish Harlem. Even though I’m Afrikan American and visit NYC all the time, Harlem is my second home and I miss the Rican culture. So miss the old Harlem
Yep Spanish Harlem used to be DOPE in the 80s
Hola! I've lived in this neighborhood my entire life, it's always refreshing to see people appreciate what the neighborhood still has to offer. If you guys ever visit again, I recommend having a dessert/sweet from Capri's Bakery on 116th, they have the best birthday cakes, bread, etc. Also, recommend La Fonda Boricua!
I love Puerto Rican people and the music yo quisiera ser pura boricua pa que tú lo sepas 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
Great collaboration! Love to see the less touristy neighborhoods highlighted.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!! :D
Hey Jon! Just start binge watching your videos again. I really love this different community of people, place in NYC with many stories, old neighborhood, old school food joint, knick knack shop, I think that's what makes NYC is such a lovely place! ❤ keep up the good work 🤘
I saved this video. That is something that I rarely ever do. I am looking forward to exploring Spanish Harlem on my next visit. Thanks!
I love this video!! The Puerto Rican culture is so rich and full of authenticity. I really enjoyed seeing all our delicious dishes and the beautiful history of our talented musicians 👍🇵🇷
Wow New York City is so historic I cannot wait to visit! Thank you for the video!
You have the best must see videos on the internet! No drama. No Karen's. Just cool videos on neighbor hoods near you. 😄
Very cool video with two of my favorite UA-camrs! Great work fellas.
Cuchifritos - classic! Love the old school countertop and stools at that spot
🥳
As the one Puerto Rican in my town THANK YOU for this. Love my people
This was a great video! 🙌
Beautiful video. Spanish Harlem is very rich in history. If you take time and talk to the people you can learn a lot as your video shows. Thanks for making this video.
So nice to see you guys are covering this area! 😉
I lived on 116th street and 2nd ave during the early 2000s. And had a great experience with the hispanic community. Thanks for the video . Cheers from Brazil
Now I remember where I saw "Urbanist" for the first time! I love both of your channels so much!
Just watched your video and I wanted to let you know that I appreciated you giving such appetizing descriptions of the food. As you ate the “mofongo”, I was literally tasting it as well. I will be visiting Spanish Harlem just because of you. Thank you👍🏽👌🏽😊
The tour wasn’t complete without a visit to the “Smashie” spot on 103rd st for the Barrio late night sandwich. Glad you finally made it to my home area and that you enjoyed it
This is another great collaboration. There’s nothing like Puerto Rican food, especially cuchifritos😋 My mom was there at the Fania All Star concert. 🇵🇷
From Sunset Park to East Harlem! 👍Just for fun. Tamarind actually originally from tropical Africa but over years made it into Latin cuisine, Asian (ie Thai), and Indian. In fact today India #1 producer of tamarind. .
Caribbean*
The Latin Cuisine is the Italian Cuisine.
@@juanmanuelgomezrubio3036 latin cuisine is nowhere near italian. it’s mostly influenced from african, native (indigenous), and spanish cuisine. only argentinians and venezuelans have significant italian cuisines, since there’s a bunch of italian immigrants over there.
Even plantains come from Africa
Yes, i love those videos. Cant wait when everything is open again and he shows us some new Cocktail Bars who will open after this Crisis😍
I'd love too.
Gracias para el viaje a Spanish Harlem. Me gusto mucho la cancion en los minutos primeros de su video. Gracias por todo.
Nice video! Really enjoyed this!
Spanish Harlem and Harlem is must visit in nyc right behind Brooklyn.
I love this video 😉 so awesome 👍👍👍 love the Puerto Ricans
Thanks for sharing this video Spanish Harlem one of the greatest neighborhood in NYC
los 2 mejores junto! mucho love from bayamon puerto rico 🇵🇷
Gracias!!
Loved this one, good to see you collab with Ariel, I love El Barrio makes me feel if im home in PR 🇵🇷, the main reason I go to El Barrio is for the cuchifritos.
Thanks Manny!!
Good informative video John, nice to see the real barrios of New York.
Thanks 🙏🏻
You guys both rock!
It’s definitely worth visiting for the food.
Since I love Latin music, especially salsa, I'll be visiting Casa Latina. There are still dance parties and concerts from May through November in various parts of El Barrio and also The Bronx. Really enjoyed this collab with Ariel...thank you!
That fried codfish looks amazing! 🤤😋
Another great video! Keep them coming, since I’m on lockdown in SoCal 😭
Nice channel and cool videos. I am learning english and these videos are very helpful for me.
Regards 🙌🏻🇬🇹 💯
The only one constant in life, is change. Good video, HBB!! :)
Love the Fania All Stars! Great you got some stories from Angel Rene and Vicente
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 thanks Greg I know you’re all about the Puerto Rican culture
Vincente is such a wealth of salsa-music knowledge!
Finalmente EL
BARRIO de New York. Thanks much brother. El Barrio is a cultural patrimony.
This is one of my favorites videos. I went to the Spanish Harlem earlier this year and it's different from 90s. However, you still have a big Latino community. There is so much Latin history here and if you love salsa you must visit La casa Latina and take pictures of all the murals that remaind there.
Viva el Barrio🔥🔥
Thumbs up👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
My mom is from Spanish Harlem love this video
Thanks share w her :)
Thanks for this very nice video...Yes, the Latino Music Shop is legendary and so are the murals and food establishments.. Many aren't aware that at the turn of the 20th Century, in East Harlem, many Jewish families shared the neighborhood with Italians ( Fiorello LaGuardia , former NYC mayor) was their District Leader and Congressman). A few of my favorite spots to visit are Rao's Restaurant - 455 East 114th St ( almost impossible to gain entry though), Patsy's Pizza ( the original Patsy's)- 2287 1st Ave, Keith Harings " Crack is Wack" Mural at 128th St and Harlem River Drive and finally the Harlem Courthouse at 170 East 121st St ..a very beautiful Romanesque Revival structure. Keep up your labor of love and MERRY CHRISTMAS to Here be Barr and family and Ariel and family and ALL SUBSCRIBERS.
Yes! I go to El Chevere and the El Chevere bakery all the time! Gotta get the pernil, papa rellena, croquetas de jamón, and the empanada d pollo
Awesome vid
10:50.
My old hood. I used to live about half a block away from there.
104th bet 3rd and Lex.
Regards from Puerto Rico and thanks for sharing. Be safe.
I’ve always wanted to visit Spanish Harlem. I used to go all around Lower Manhattan (especially Chinatown) & all the way up to the Upper Westside but never got around to go all the way up. I grew up not too far away from Humboldt Park here in Chicago, which is the PR enclave here. Not nearly as vibrant anymore (a lot of gentrification is happening), but it’s still there.
Great video! All my favorite foods from my childhood 😋 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed
I was raised on 104th street between lex and park thanks for the memories as its been over 10 years that i moved from nyc i miss it
its not the same but this video i enjoyed . my childhood was full of such great memories my grandfather vito was a conga player grew up in east river and 103rd wash. it is rich in history and if you had a chance to experience it that was a gift no one can take from you
🗽🌁🏙🇵🇷✌🏽😎👍🏽🗯🆒️Good job
Thanks for taking me back to my roots. I grew up in the Bronx and they were tons of Latin food around me. I should say Puerto Rican food. Boy do I miss it now living in Florida but when I go back, I always make sure I get me some Puerto Rican food.
Cool video thankyou Gentlemen 👍🏼 from Miami..
Great video! I’m taking my two Latina daughters to NYC in August; this gave me lots of good ideas for places to visit with them.
Okay, also, that wasn’t a bongo. That was a conga. 😊
Im from el Barrio! And yes he’s so right! It’s definitely not the same anymore. I remember all that, that he mentioned and now it’s just not the same 😩
I grew up listening to the Drifters, one of my dad's favorite groups.
Oh yes LOVE mofongo! Best we had to date was Cafe Manolin in San Juan
I showed a clip of it in the video
Yes!!! Love that us patrons get to see these videos a day early! ✨✨✨
#perks
Fellow Boricua here! Love El Barrio and Da Bronx! The people are awesome and the food amazing!
Every time I go back, it’s cuchifrito all the way papi!
Love Puerto Rican Food. Share this video with some friends if ou liked it.
Bacalaitos are to die for 😍
Seen both Tito`s at the Hollywood's Palladian For Latin Holidays fantastic. THE best dancers you will ever see. Excuse my spelling 😙
Nuyorican here as well. Born in P.R. and raised in NYC.
Cuchifrito spot has been there for the longest time. Gets super-packed during the Puerto Rican Day Parade
I bet!
What about the Festival???
grand slam video sir,I grew up with a lot of puerto ricans,I know the culture
mofongo,arroz con pollo,ya tu sabe.
Ariel Viera great guy
Thanks for sharing
Awesomeness
This video made me so hungry! I loveee latin fooood :)
;)
I’ve been going to the Graffiti Hall of Fame since the 90’s. They renovated that place. It used to be pretty beat down and you could sneak in through a hole in the fence. Shoutout to James Top for still doing annual events there. Street Art wise, the last time Banksy was in NYC, he did a piece in Spanish Harlem. I visited the mural before the graff writers tagged over it. It was the “If You Loot, We Shoot” piece showing a Wall Street trader stealing a bunch of cash.
Sounds amazing
Now El Barrio is in Orlando and Miami Florida 🇵🇷🇺🇸 😂😂😂😂
i love being puerto rican!
Amazing video
Awesome!
I love the video bro
Hi guys, lovely collab!! I love seeing u together.
Just a note about the word "capicú" that Ariel referred: it comes from catalonian and the meaning is "cap i cúa", that is : head and tail.
It is referred to figures that start and finish with the same number, and can be read the same right to left and left to right. Example: 1221
In dominó, you shout "capicúa" when both ends have the same number. 👍👍
A domino palindrome, nice. 👍
You're gonna think I'm nuts, but I recognize your quick b-roll clip as a plate from Cafe Manolin. Best place in Old San Juan for lunch! I gotta check out that playlist!
Nailed it!!
Yes!
A Bodega is a wine shop in Spain originally...might have changed meaning in new york, but it is not from Puerto Rico. Love the videos though. Going to nyc in sept and looking forward to trying the places you suggest
This just dropped before I went to bed so I'll watch it in the morning 😊
I live down the block so cool
Another Here Be Barr awesome vlog!
Thanks
Nice, thanks man, I hope I meet you here ( Toronto )
Give me a plate of arroz con gandules 😍
Mofongo is soooo good 🥰
My neighborhood!! 🙏🏽
There is a GREAT cuchifritos place in the bronx. Baron Ambrosia did a whole show on it...soooo good!
188 Cuchifritos?
@@FoodandFootprints yes! My husband and i took a bus and walked there from the west side of the BX in a snow storm in like 2011 or 2012 to go there and it was packed! Even in the middle of a snow storm lol
PUERTO RICO!!!!!! LOVE THE FOOD ❤
Dominicans came to New York vía Puerto Rico it was the Puerto Rican’s who helped them to establish in the city. But you guys are not ready yet.
Yeah the worst thing that could happen to PR🇵🇷 is have that 💩hole next to our island. Now they trying to turn NYC into their third world country with all the illegal dirtbikes, mopeds, fake license plates, etc. I always say if DR was never next to PR🇵🇷 they would be eating dog food to this very day.
Home 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤 born n raised !!!! I have instruments from casa latina. My dad played.
LMAO..I've called myself a New Yorican for years. Puerto Ricans made fun of my Spanish so I started calling myself that.
I feel you man! Some Puerto Ricans can be really harsh about being raised in NYC and try to invalidates one's "Puerto Rican-ness" hence why I also embrace the Nuyorican name :D
Salute to Brothers Dj Louie Vega and Dj Kenny Dope of Masters At Work (MAW)
Muy Bueno video
My brother! Did you get a "Chopped Cheese Sandwich" ? It is the Philly cheese steak of Spanish Harlem..
I miss my home city so much! Peace and Happy Thanksgiving! :)
Never been to Spanish Harlem, looks cool!
Gracias Todd
You should. It's fun
You’re in my childhood neighborhood!
Really nice.
