Great! What a reminiscence this brought on. I lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn late 80's early 90's. This area actually reminds me of my old neighborhood pre-gentrification. It was was a Puerto Rican and Irish area of Park Slope.
On the 4th of July, my block was like downtown Beirut. Full of explosions, orange smoke and zooming rockets every night for about a week. You couldn't breathe or see 5 feet in front of you. You could only see the fireworks bursting. For a few days it was a treacherous walk home from the subway after dark but amazing too. The police never shut down the party--just let everybody celebrate. I'm sure they had better things to do.
Delicious plantanos, rice and bean dinner for $2.99 on the corner. I'm sure that restaurant's not there anymore.
My landlord offered to sell me a first floor, 2 bedroom shotgun condo with 800sf garden rights for $80,000! Coulda shoulda, I knew what was coming, but I was busting loose and headed to the wild wild west.
I visited The Cloisters once in the mid/late 80's. It was magnificent, so peaceful, fresh and cool in the summer. I think I remember seeing the Unicorn Tapestries. Don't they live there?
I had friends who lived in a rural area of Wash Heights in a pre-colonial hodge-podge house with bits built in early 1700's and parts added 100 years later.
    NYC, rich tumultuous history.
Thanks to you and Noemy for a great tour! (and the opportunity to look back today:)

I was really glad to see this clip on Washington Heights. It is a section of Manhattan that gets overlooked because it is so far from mid town. However it is a treasure. I have been coming up to NYC for years and was always interested by this section of the city. Unfortunately it was not easy to get to if I was doing a day trip up (I live in Philly). I also had always wanted to see The Cloisters. So, last year I decided to do a trip up to NYC just to go up to the Cloisters and Washington Heights. Fort Tryon Park is a treasure affording great views of the Hudson and the George Washington Bridge. The Cloisters is a also worth a visit. From a day tripper standpoint this is really something that you have to specifically plan for. But it is well worth the trip.

My family moved to the suburbs of NJ when I was 15....but Washington Heights remains in my heart. I have always treasured the experience of growing up in such a colorful, diverse part of the world...it shaped me in so many ways! It's been through so many changes since we moved away...so glad to see it looking amazingly well. (My other favorite about the Heights: Mad Hot Ballroom....see it if you haven't!)

I was born and raised in the Heights & lived there for almost 40yrs before finally getting my duck$ lined up so I could move out of NYC completely. Despite all of the positive facts presented in this clip (which are true), there is an underlying fact that isn't so positive about Washington Heights and that concerns the relationship between non Spanish speaking blacks and Dominicans. The relationship is overwhelmingly one of cultural polarization. If you want details just ask any non-Spanish speaking black resident of the Heights and I guarantee that most will tell you the truth about the matter. There's constant separation between the two cultures. The two live upside one another but DO NOT openly mix socially and that's a fact. I am black and know many Spanish words without really speaking Spanish fluently having grown up in the Heights. I've had certain Dominicans say to me 'But you look Dominican!' as though they were paying me a compliment for not looking too black in their eyes (I guess). I never took these type comments as compliments. I made several great friends who were Dominican but to me it seems as though many Dominicans in the Heights are overwhelmingly more welcoming towards white visitors and gentrifiers. I guess seeing whites come through makes them feel like they're getting 'a leg up'. To me it was depressing living in an area where I couldn't fully relate or mix with the majority of the population so I left and I haven't looked back.
