- The other day on stream, we took a look at a video by Lucky Ghost highlighting the top 15 MMOs by player count as of mid 2024. We were surprised to see just how long some of these MMOs have been able to hang onto their player base.

That wizard101 gave me Vietnam flashbacks of the old commercial they used to run
SAMEEE literally my first thought when I heard "wizard 101" I could just hear his voice from the commercials 😂
No kidding I clicked on this video cause I knew W101 would be mentioned and I wanted to see what everyone had to say about it lol. I still play and the community is still very much alive
What about Flyff
Wizard 101 is a name I haven’t heard since like 2012
I still have it installed
It was so damn good.
Legit have a funny story about the very last time i played Wizard 101. In 4th grade i spent ages grinding money so i could but one of the bigger houses in the game, and i was almost able to achieve my goal, until i left my account logged in when i went to school one day, and my little brother got on and spent ALL of my money on robes.... I legit never logged in again, after that.
for a good reason

If only you didnt have to pay $300+ to keep all the content or have to pay a monthly subscription
As a veteran GW2 player, its an amazing game. Close to 9000hrs in it, and still love it. Definitely worth playing or trying out. Also a lot of the earlier expansions are free or extremely cheap when you catch a sale.
Guild Wars 2 was the first game to really rip me away from Destiny 2. Very satisfying combat.
gw2 is my favorite "soulslike" typa mmo combat wise. Lost ark would be it but too bad the game is p2w and grindy as hell
Didn't guildwars come out like 4 years before d2?
Gw2 best game.
@@jgsource552GW2's combat is not even remotely similar to a Soulslike
@@aorac That's irrelevant, isn't it? Ocarina of Time ripped me away from WoW at one point. The fact that it was released years prior is completely irrelevant.
Cross looking for his next bag lol
hopping onto something like Guidwars or Final Fantasy wouldn't be that bad
@@AnotherAyushRajguild wars is the worst as far as engaging content goes. Watching gameplay would be boring
@@McMoony GW pushing the woke envelope, too, feels like lately
@@Joe_Cominobros got brainrot 💀
@@Joe_Comino wokeness doesn't define a game's success, despite culture warriors like you grasping for straws thinking it does.
People like you say stuff "like go woke go broke" when a game fails, but at the same time when a "woke" game like Overwatch or Baldur's Gate 3 succeeds you write it off as "appealing to the masses". It's ridiculously inconsistent
Guild Wars 2 is the biggest underdog in my opinion. Both my brother and I have been playing it for years, and I have never, ever regretted paying for the full game. It may get overshadowed in the media and against it's competitors, but it is always a blast. PvP also feels like you're a part of an army, charging at huge castles your enemy is defending or attacking.
It also has the best seasonal events of any game in it's genre, and I will die on that hill. Shadow of the Mad King is a dream (nightmare) everyone should get to experience.
GW2 is the game i keep going back to. Definitely the most Casual Friendly MMO on this list due to how gearing works in this game
I love GW2. It even has pseudo action combat settings you can enable, and it makes the game so much more fun
@@ImpulsiveBaconthat mode is implemented so badly, and if you ever decide to do somewhat challenging content, it’ll do nothing for you.
I love GW2 combat and world events but gearing progression is a bit too simple. Imagine beating the most difficult boss just for some weapon skins💀
thats what i like about it. You'll never get left behind with your items. It is what it is.
@bruddah_ sounds like a skill issue. It plays out perfectly fine for pretty much everything. It's not as well done obviously as modern games but it works fine
Just about all my Guild Wars 2 friends quit playing. I wish I had people to play it with, it's very underrated imo.
It is. I love that game to death and the devs are goats. I however after 10 years cant see myself playing that game anymore so long as certain GMs are still at anet that can suspend me whenever they feel like
new expansion that comes in late August seems very good especially with the player housing it seems GW2 it will full fill all the requirements for a great MMO the combat the mount system which are not just cosmetics to collect the fashion and now Houses :D
I can play with you
I am new to the game
Name: Witcher M
FFXIV and Destiny have been my two games for the past 10 years. All I've ever needed.
brother expand your horizons please
Wait nevermind, FF14 mentioned 🗣️🗣️🗿🔥
All you "think to know you need"
I remember when destiny said they were gonna be a 10 year game. I stuck around and definitely had some month or 2 month long hiatus. However, the game always brought me back to keep.
Some catch my attention for a while, but they tend to lack attention grabbing things. If I wasn't so loyal to SE, XIV would have been that, but I have been playing since 1.0 so the monotony of the endgame grind has gotten to me a few times. I've downloaded Remnant 2 and BDO.. I tried to play ESO again and was like "Meh" and deleted that again. I won't mind trying New World on console. I can play on my PC, but I like playing XIV at the same time I play my PS5 LOL
GW2 is fkin amazing, a game I always keep going back to.
i still playing its so easy to come back into you dont really lose worth of the grind you did. Gw2 and Destiny are my main games
Guild Wars 2 was groundbreaking in a lot of ways. They went out of their way to not make any design decisions by default.
I think it likely inspired some systems design for Destiny.
At the time no other MMO competing with its dynamic action combat IMO. Dodge rolls? SICK.
Conspiracy theory- breath of the wild was inspired by the gliders in GW2 (but not really lol)
Lol no, it was taken from the windwaker glider
your the hero we needed
You’ll like Guild Wars 2, the combat system is fantastic, and it’s a game that doesn’t waste your time, it respects it, you can leave it and pick it back up without feeling like you have to grind too much.
Shame half of the game is a fucking super mario kind of content. I mean there are event based on jumping puzzles on a damn MMO.

I'd definitely recommend GW2 to anyone looking to try out a new MMO. It has some great content, amazing mounts, and the devs treat their players with a ton of respect (no FOMO). The expansions go on sale all the time too.
It has the best progression system too. I picked up the game after a 6 year break and was able to jump right into the new content without having to grind for any essential gear.
@@DaddyDabberino so true! Horizontal progression beats vertical progression every time!
@@DaddyDabberino fck it. I hate paying for expansions but I'll give GW2 like 13th chance and just buy expansions. I'll blame you two for this.
Gonna recommend GW2 to you. It's not my main game, but the combat and exploration kick ass.
Also, BDO is a pvp game. The "good combat" doesn't mean anything because the enemies don't have real movesets and there is no encounter design. It's just dynasty warriors lol. It's designed to fight thinking opponents.
But gw2 combat is much worse
@@Matshiro worse than what
Gw2 combat is elite, but only shines in PvP. The pve is beyond easy compared to anything else.
Guild Wars 2 remains on my pc and is still one of my favorite games of all time. Literally made every class and each race. The Story alone is so fucking good.
I just recently went back to ESO. I play on console so Destiny had time to hook me in because of the console ESO delay. Now that Destiny is slowing down I can try to catch up in ESO. The Cyrodiil PVP is a blast and I enjoy the quests.
Playing PvP in eso has been some of the most fun I’ve had in gaming in a while
ESO is a great game it's been a ton of fun
The biggest problem with ESO is that it pretends to be subscription free in order to justify the egregious prices for not just cosmetics but also skill line skips, etc.
It's really not sub-free, if you want to seriously invest time into ESO you're nearly forced into the subscription. Crafting is an extreme hassle without the craft bag from the sub, you get only half the bank space, only half the furniture slots so housing is a no-go.
As a consequence of the cosmetic shop there's next to nothing you can earn in the game in terms of cosmetics for the average player to feel some pride in.
There are *very* few mounts you can in theory earn from trials. They're however locked behind seriously difficult challenges that 99% of the playerbase will never dream of completing. Everyone else has to spend money if they want something cool or do like 6-12 months worth of daily challenges to get the seals to buy just one good mount from the shop. And of course there's no sense of achievement or fun in that.
I highly advice against playing it on console right now. Since the expansion launch this June, they've arbitrarily implemented a menu FPS cap for current gen consoles. The reason stated is "environmental sustainability". They're limiting your performance because they want to hit their own set energy saving goal, it's pretty egregious.
ESO is one of the more enjoyable story-MMOs I've played. It's able to pull from an incredibly deep library of lore and is set in an expansive and beloved setting, so anyone who is a fan of The Elder Scrolls or just fantasy in general can really enjoy running through the game's many different campaigns.
The combat is a little stiff but not bad, just a product of when it came out. Monetization isn't horrible - you can trade your way into owning every DLC in the game without spending a cent and it's not even that hard, and the subscription is good to have but not as required as many other games on the list.
It's got a ton of content, and is still constantly coming out with more to do, new classes, new skills, new areas, new stories, new endgame.
I can very much recommend ESO if you like fantasy MMOs.
@@Voidovajust not true.. I went long periods of time with no sub.. purchased 90% of dlc with gold from other players.

I feel like Aztecross might like GW2 a lot. It's got a rough start imo but it picks up when you get into the post-80 content.
Guild Wars 1 is my favorite and most played game of all time. Should I make the transition? I played GW2 at launch and lasted about 1 week and have not been back.
@@terrellvelazquez6367 I'd say it's definitely worth getting. Pricy coming in late unless you don't care about skipping story beats (not recommended imo), but worth every penny I've spent.
Dude I was thinking you were talking about garden warfare 2 for a moment
@@terrellvelazquez6367GW2 now is much better and different than launch. The original release/story is the free part so it is a lot of content to sink your teeth into.

I wish Wildstar still existed. Game came out and then shuttered before I got into PC gaming, and I've never wanted to try an MMO more.
Final Fantasy 14 is my JAM. Love that game. The developers caring and communicating with the community shows in the community. It has one of the best communities of any game I have played.
worst community by a mile in my experience
As someone who still plays wizard101, I was surprised to see it on this list.

Nooooooooooo!!!!! Whomp whomp
Think Cross would really dig GW2. Really great alternative to Destiny with its dynamic combat, classes with flexible buildcraft, fully voice acted story, puzzle-heavy raids, monetization model (albeit more generous) and similar update cadence. With an expac literally at the end of this month, it's kinda the perfect time to check it out too
Cross, if you try Guild Wars 2, I will happily return to help you out.
As someone who left destiny 2 and joined FFXIV I'm so happy I made the change. FFXIV is phenomenal.
Gw2 is game for you
Dude I freaking love gw2 it's is so fun, like I've Sank at least 300hrs and I've started like 9 months ago, I highly recommend it good combat great mounts very interesting story
yeap i agree
I know Destiny isn't on this list, but I'm gonna miss that grind. I think their raids are just content that are completely unique with its mechanics. The cooperation needed for encounters and the challenges in them made that game for me. No other game that I know of has replicated that.

I have played swtor since beta. Love the game, and run the 2nd most active guild on the server. 2200+ in our discord. The end game raids are a challenge, especially Master Mode God's of the Machine Raid. Only a handful (were literally talking less than 100) have legitimately cleared that raid. My team is currently progging the 3rd encounter Nahut. There are 2 more after that. Then once you've completed that you can go back in and try to get the timer run 90min. Mm gods timer is by far the greatest achievement in the game. A intense battle of mechanics and team play I recommend anyone who has 7 other friends to try.
One you do this on 8 man then their 16 for another mind **** lol loads of fun. However I will say I have 2 games this and destiny ;) always need that extra game to cure the boredom when it comes.
@@masterchief2303 Hello! I might be interested in starting SWOTR and have a question :) How long does it usually take to get from beginner to endgame?
@josephpugh1331 you can literally buy a level up boost to level to 80 instantly but you will need to grind the gear.
So to grind to max gear level you talking 2- 3 weeks minimum. If you make multiple characters.
If you have some friends to run you through r4 raid you can gear in a week or less. With multiple characters.
Just running 1 character your talking probably 3 weeks to a month and a half gearing wise.
Would love to see SWTOR play through of Jedi and Sith.
The decepticons at bungie are destroying the game, anything that has to do with them always cost more money. Once this cleanse happens d2 will be in a way better place.

Yeah I think eso is bigger on consoles for sure.
Actually we can see the amount of active accounts for FFXIV through the loadstone but I get your point
SWTOR is my favorite on this list besides ESO because im a bioware fan and because im a mass effect fan. Been playing swtor for the fun, the story, and feeling epic or like i have a place in the story. As well as seeing some important historical characters like revan. It is hands down my fav on this list.

The bayou boys was a fun clan I was in, meet my current d2 clan because of them. Sucks that the rest of the yellow team claimed our territory was not worth defending
I think Aztecross would probably like Guild Wars 2, its pretty good action and rewards you for exploring around, plus the classes can fit whatever type of playstyle you'd want by switching skills, abilities, weapons and armor stats.

If I had to recommend only one MMO for someone to play and make their primary MMO, I would pick Guild Wars 2. And this is coming from someone who's played Destiny, OSRS, RS3, and dabbled in a few other MMOs, I would pick GW2 every time. It has a hybrid action-tab target combat system that feels extremely smooth, and it even has underwater combat that doesn't feel like complete ass. Each of the nine professions are incredibly unique and well balanced, and literally every single class can fill any role. Like he said in the original video, GW2 has the best mounts in the industry, so much so that it served as the blueprint for WoW's Dragonflight mounts! It also has arguably the best open world experience among traditional MMOs with its dynamic event system (which Destiny also took inspiration from). Each zone has a series of meta events that culminate in insane boss fights that make even the Witness look small by comparison, including in the starter zones. Seriously, exploring the open world in this game is so fun, especially in the later zones.
I quit destiny after 6 years and now GW2 is my new home
Crazy how First Descendant would be number 3-4 if it was included now
18:16 as someone who used to think that "I didn't have it in me to re grind on osrs" I'm glad that 2 years ago I eventually decided to start again, and its just amazing, I've gotten to end game PVM and the raids are actually intense
SWTOR THE GOAT
Cross should play it just for the story experience. So damn good, especially as a star wars fan, casual or hardcore.
isn't SWTOR extremely P2W?
@@Menderino Nah. Base story, which is level 1-50, for 8 different character playstyles, and 8 different story lines across both Jedi and Sith is all free. Monthly sub is only $15 too.
Swtor sucks, dumbed down classes, dying community, economy is ruined because of credit duping glitch, it's basically a single player at this point. If you even try to play it f2p god have mercy on your soul. Pay to access your cargohold, pay for just about half the mechanics. Cross I am BEGGING you to try guild wars
i wish osrs would launch "frequent reset" worlds where the servers are completely reset every 30 days, like rust basically. It would be so fun because you would never be 30 days behind everyone else, and pvp would just be so much fun. the hardcore players could get the best gear in 30 days for sure, and the normals would just run around with a rune scimi and low lvl magic spells in the wildy having a blast
Hey, Cross! Not sure if you’re a Halo guy, but I make custom (free) campaign forge maps with AI, music, etc in Halo Infinite. Would you be open to playing them (footage on my channel).
GW2, FFXIV, and BDO are the main ones for me on this list. Love all of them! I've invested a solid amount of hours into all of the games on this list (outside of wizard 101) and these 3 are definitely my favorites with each having thousands of hours invested (BDO over 20,000 hours)
GW2 is criminally underrated with the storylines in the expansions being good, the combat being amazing, the mounts being the best in any MMO with how unique they all are, the maps are designed around the mounts and have so much depth and secrets to them, and the world events are some of the most memorable and breathtaking experiences in the game.
FFXIV has the best story in any MMO hands down. Definitely moments that at least brought me to tearing up, and i know others who were full on bawling their eyes out. Satisfying combat and fun raids. The only catch is the raids are a lot more like a dance where people need to be in the right place at the right time as opposed to something like WOW where only a few need to do mechanics a lot of the time.
BDO has the best combat and PvP hands down. It's fast, responsive, intuitive, and impactful. The world is seamless and beautiful (one loading screen to get into the world initially). The mounts are cool with the top end horses getting some unique traversal skills. The life-skilling in the game is massive with an absolute ton to gather and create. Sailing also opens up a lot of options in the world with stuff like underwater gathering and trading. There's just a ton to do in the game. My only two gripes are in order to keep up with the super high end pvp, you do have to spend a good chunk or invest soooo much time into the game, as well as the gear progression eventually hits a point where you have to get lucky or the gear power is reduced if you don't decide to save and buy off the market board. That's ultimately why I stopped playing, because I had to treat it like a second job in order to keep up with end game/top 1% pvp.
how is the description of this video where i find out the remnant 2 3rd dlc is getting released, ANYWAY i need to go back to play it cause its great.

BDO Combat is still one of the best , if not the best Actioncombat system in an MMO. Still playing BDO beside ESO and Destiny 2
BDO is great. It's honestly hard to recommend though imo because they're just giving out PENs for free. Freebies are nice, but the gear progression was one of the best parts of bdo imo. Failstacks were basically a form of equity so contrary to popular belief, you werent exactly losing money whenever you failed to tap. Giving out the dream horses however was a smart move. Peg is so fun

@@humanactivated1017 Games have definitely gone down hill
As someone who has played eso longer than any of the mmos I play now and since launch specifically, I have to say the experience will vary massively depending what you are looking for. It's good for casual play and questing, and generally just playing around how you want. Anything on the normal end for content is more than fine with any basic build and nothing can stop you there. But after that is where everything else stops otherwise, as if you wanna farm cosmetics, everything you are looking for will 9 times out of 10 be locked behind one of the most egregious cash shops out of this list sporting lootboxes, convenience boosters, slots for outfits, characters, loadouts, etc. and just pages upon pages of store items with scroll bars for each of them along with extremely expensive housing that you cannot get any other way but them being bought for anything on the higher end. Cosmetic wise the game is utterly robbing you compared to even other egregious examples on the list, and this generous month he mentioned is more than likely to this being the ten year anniversary year than them listening to feedback and even then the crown store has still utterly trumped those free items by a killer mile. For everything else, endgame content will require far more investment than a lot of other games, also giving next to nothing for rewards, and constant balance changes will keep having you investing into the endgame than actually running it at times. The story questlines at least in my opinion have been anywhere between middling to just bad with summerset being the last time they had a fairly enjoyable questline to follow. PvP has also been pretty much ignored largely for an incredible amount of time, which was a selling point for the game on launch. It's not the worst game ever by any stretch, but the fact he completely glossed over the absolute gash on the game like the cash shop just because it's not pay to win is pretty surprising considering it's one of the worst aspects of the game to a point pay to win isn't as much an argument anymore when the game itself throttles all of your motivation to your wallet.
Definitely would like to see you try BDO (Get to at least level 56 and do awakening/succession). If you end up enjoying BDO combat and get the hang of it, it will make all other MMO combat feel sub par.
Absolutely love action combat games...EVERY game should allow the players to vote things in as well.
I played osrs in the summer like heavily. I gotta say the game looks old, seems simple but as you progress more and more the diffeculty spikes up soooo much. You need to learn how to multitask, prayer flick, manage your health/prayer/dps all while constantly dodging attacks that the bosses throw at you. Its not an easy task. The fact that you get regularly updates cranking out and community votes is just a feature i think every game should have.
im just happy wizard101 is still getting a little bit of love
saying GW2 has B+ combat is insane, pve combat maybe but pvp is one of the best out there. and yes cross BDO combat is top notch, one of the best if not the best action combat system out of ANY game currently out, i dont enjoy the game anymore but i gotta give its combat credit.
In regards to Eve o line...yes you can spend money abd buy a ship and lose it to someone in a frigate that knows what they are doing. Having the ship don't mean you will not get ganked lol. Anyone that says otherwise never played Eve fully.
Always struggled to get into MMO's despite really wanting to, until New World came out. I absolutely loved that game when it initially dropped - gave me the kind of combat and overall game experience I wanted in an MMO. Felt more like a modern game than a lot of the other options. It hurts seeing and knowing what happened with that game considering how much potential it had.
Lost Ark raids are some of the best i've played in any MMO, with my 3k hours and 12 characters, it just became too much after 2.5 years, the content became slow and monotonous, but was sure fun as hell when i was actively playing.
BDO is by far the most addicting mmo ive ever played, i started playing in 2018 and ive consistently always come back to it no matter how many breaks i have, and ive never experience such intense emotions with gear in any other game, it will leave you a lifeless husk of a human or you will get the biggest dopamine rush you will ever receive from progression in any mmo.
As a 27 year old hardcore FPS turbosweat, seeing Wiz on here put such a big smile on my face. SUCH a good game if you can look past the childish aesthetic and not get burned out of repetitive fetch quests. Just scratches an itch nothing else really can
Hardcore classic wow with a group of friends has been some of the most fun I’ve had in a game in a long time
Guildwars 2 is a great game and respects your time does not need to spend a lot of money to play it also just one purchase of the expansions which are not expensive and they do a lot of discounts often . The mounts are amazing the fashion aspect to. Combat great the build crafting is amazing and their new expansion will also introduce player housing ...and we are talking 10 years of content to explore and experience it has one of the best open world systems and you will never find a map not having people in it even though is older content. Not to mention World vs World vs World :D massive pvp craziness very fun. I recommend people to try it
Anthem will forever be the most successful yet failed game I've ever played man... just because of that flight system bro... the gahhh damn flight system was straight PEAK and the best flight system in any game you'll ever seen like that shit was WAAAAAAY ahead bro that shit was just 👌🏾👌🏾 too gah damn PERFECT
As someone who goes back to play BDO every now and then, I 100% recommend BDO if you enjoy long grinds and just general action combat.
No other game comes close to the action combat that BDO has, the feeling of moving from pack to pack, managing your skills and AoE is just simply amazing.
It has definitely gotten better of the years with them giving out free gear as well as seasonal servers being a good boost into the midgame to endgame of BDO.
Albion is on mobile so it makes a lot of sense in terms of player growth. Never played but definitely seen tons of adds over the few years
As soon as my kids can look after themselves I will be going back to traditional MMOs. I do miss is it lol - FF14, WoW my go toos. Guild Wars was so much fun.
