The water in the big tank is really polished! It looks near invisible. The large peacock bass is just stunning - I am in awe of your results thus far and I am looking forward to the plants growing in and the fish growing out. Good evening. I have never commented on your channel. But watched you for a long time. I must say that you do a fantastic job with your animals. It makes my animal-loving heart very happy! Your large South America aquarium is something many should aspire to. Your fish live their best lives in your possession! Keep inspiring. Greetings from someone in Sweden 👍👍💚🐟
Thank you so much (someone in Sweden) 🙂🙂 I do hope that my tanks have a positive influence on other fish keepers and lead to the best conditions possible for the fish.
I added SAE's into my 90 gallon that got covered in green algae. Initially, i put in one, but it was too much to deal with, so added another 4. By this time BBA had appeared and while they demolished the green algea were reluctant to eat the BBA. Eventually i added algexit to get it to die off, and then they ate it. Now it's gone they do a great job keeping it that way.
SAE's kick butt at eating algae, I see mine working all the time and they made a huge difference. I think a lot of times people just don't add enough of them, but like you saw beef up the group a little bit and they get results! 😊
Nice update, tanks looking great. I like the simple but effective filter upgrade. If I can recommend something, maybe just put an extra overflow hole/pipe in the trash can a little higher than the other two just incase those strainers clog up. Sometimes a clump of plant matter or algae can get sucked in there and stop the whole thing, especially without the mats to block it anymore. It would give you some time to clean it before either a flood or pump burnout. Just a thought. Also, all those plants on the 4500 look so epic. It's like a whole jungle in your house, lol.
Definitely never a bad idea to have an emergency drain. I have a theoretical 600 gph drain going into the settlement chamber and a theoretical 1200 gph of drain, but I will keep an eye on it for sure. I can tell you that another comment pointed out that their slim line trash can bowed a lot with water in it and I can tell that mine would as well if it was not jammed in there like it is. I am definitely going to have to frame and support the other one that I want to put on the 750 gallon. 🙂
These discus are beautiful they got bigger and They still moving, for me usually when in other tanks are seen big discuss they are not in motion usually very slowly moving and here it's big pleasure to watch clean tank and colourful quite big dicscus in motion, curiosity of the aquarium.
Love the filter upgrade. That will definitely help with the algae problem. Looking forward to an update on that tank in a few weeks. Always a good day when you update. Peace and blessings, my friend.
Hey Phil! I think doubling the size of the vegetable filter and getting a better handle on the mechanical filtration with the settling chamber will do the trick...always fun to see how it turns out...so I will give it a couple months and we can check out the progress. 😁😁
Two thoughts for you. It would be really to make a bridge between the two 1500 gallon tanks that you could walk under and the fish could swim from one tank to another. I beleive you mentioned your wife in one of the videos when you were doing a home project. It would be interesting to hear take on your tanks. Like what are her favorites, favorite fish, how insane she thinks you are kind of thing. Even if she isnt a fish person.
She likes the Discus the best, but she isn't a fish person at all. The key for her is that all the fish are in the basement and that I built her an upstairs laundry room so that she doesn't have to come down into the basement lol 😁😁
What do you use in the terrestrial plant baskets as media? I’m about to finish my first outdoor pot pond (40 gallon glazed pot with a DIY filter for Japanese rice fish), and wasn’t sure what to use in place of the soil. Do you use pea gravel, lava rock, an aquaponics media? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Absolutely love your channel by the way! Can hardly wait for the grow out fish to be added to the 4500 tank! I check at least once a week to see any new info on that tank!
Just a heads up on a possible issue. I tried to create a filter with the slim trashcans like you did. When filled with water the bulging of the trash can created a leak in the bottom where the plastic was molded. I would love to know if you purchased a sturdier trash can and where I could find one becasue they are super awesome for saving space. Love the content by the way
also just thought of this as I finished the video, did you think about making either of the 1500 gallons see through with 2 windows? would be really cool if possible
The slim line I have is a commercial one (ordered from uline) it seems quite strong. Plus it is so wedged into it's current spot I don't see it being able to flex at all lol 😁
I know it's Xingu River the biotop but I would love to see in this big aquarium big various fishes like arapaima, aligator gar and other monsters like even giant gouramy, stingrays, arowanas, many different big colourful fishes. It would load up the aquarium and made very interesting to watch all of them.
It is Xingu River inspired, definitely not a biotope and some of those fish will be in there, but things like Arapaima and Alligator Gar get way too big...even for the 4500 😊
I got to thinking what if you put viewing windows on both sides of the 1,500's? You could view from either side and even look through to the 4500. Maybe an option for you to think about.
Quite a few people have mentioned that and something I have thought about, but with the scape I have planned and the added cost of an additional window if it would make sense to do it.
The plan is to just have the front viewing panel. My aqua scape plans will have much of the back of the tank covered in scape and wouldn't look good viewed through a back panel. I think it would only be worth the cost of an additional glass panel per tank if I were doing a center scape and planned to view the tank like peninsula style.
I apologize if you have mentioned this before, but I noticed one of the (I think) peacock bass in the 4500 had yellow markings? Is that just the lighting or is it a different kind of fish? (They're all beautiful!)
I fiberglass my entire tanks, so the seams get a layer of epoxy resin, then the fiberglass mat saturated in another layer of epoxy resin, then lastly 3 coats of pond armor.
Suggestion. Add a 3rd drain pipe at the bottom of the garbage can that has a tap/ball-valve to which you can attach a hose-pipe or drain pipe to make cleaning even easier. You can add the hose, open the tap and fill the tank so that it overflows via the filter into the garden to feed your garden plants when you do a water change. When you've drained/cleaned the filter, close the valve and your water change and filter clean will be complete. Edit: You'll probably have to add a ball-valve or something that can block the overflow of the filter to ensure that the muck does not run out the overflow when you clean the filter. Edit2: Another suggestion. Build a frame out of PVC and cover it with black cloth and put the frame on wheels so that you can wheel it behind you when you record your videos to eliminate reflections. Great to see all the progress in the Annex. The river bank looks amazing!
All great ideas...thank you! I realized the last few weeks that I get builds done faster when it isn't so cold and dark after work 😁 Can't wait for the weekend to get some good work in on the Annex builds!
If you go back about 6-8 months in my videos you will see a bunch of videos where I show building the basement Annex, you will see that it is a purpose built room and the slab is way over the top for the weight I am putting on it. 😁
I'm working on trying to find the balance on my 75 gallon community tank between plants, light and nutrients but now I have to go out of town for a few weeks, it's probably going to be a lot of algae when I get back.
Feels good though when you do get the tank in balance, really takes a lot less effort and the tank is much more resilient then most people would think is possible in an aquarium. it will get there.
Good options...there are so many choices these days when it comes to smaller Tetra species...especially with places like Dan's Fish bringing in the more rare stuff. 😁
the shimmer looks amazing. what light is that ? and also you need to add more fast growing plants to beat algea. Vallisneria or some cryptocorynes.. anyways looks nice anyways
Those are Kessil Tuna Suns...quite expensive but damn to they have a nice shimmer 😁 Hopefully doubling the vegetable filter size will, combined with the cleaning crew establish a balance in the tank...we will see 😁😁
This is great. Question, how is the amount of water going into the trickle tower controlled? Is it just a drain tube in the side of the tank sealed with a bulk head that only flows based on the input amount, similar to your Predator Bay, or is it a suction/filter tube more like what an FX6 has?
I have an overflow box with J-tubes in it on the 220 which feeds the water to the sump. Overflow rate is controlled by the return pump / J-tube size. Basically it can only overflow the amount of water that can be supplied to it, but of course too big a pump would exceed what the J-tubes can overflow..so has to be balanced.
@AquariumDomain. I see, makes sense, I've watched all your videos but I've never seen anything with that tank specifically. I guess it's one of those things that you've learned through trial and error. I'd like to try it myself, just go for it I guess. Thank you for the response!
