- First broadcast: Oct 2014.
Episode 16/16 Dame Evelyn Glennie is one of the world's finest virtuoso percussionists. Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, she is the first musician to create and sustain the career of a solo percussionist, performing in over 50 countries, recording 30 solo albums and the winner of three prestigious Grammy awards.
As she approaches 50 she is now involving herself in what she describes as 'legacy' projects - 'ones that make a difference'. These vary from unique collaborations to her plans for a National Centre for Percussion, which will not only display her collection of over 2,000 percussion instruments but also be a space for performances, master classes and lectures.
The programme explores Evelyn's collection of instruments, follows her in rehearsal and reveals the story of how a country girl from Aberdeenshire became a global percussion superstar.
What an inspiration! Now I don't feel so bad about my instrument collection. I have significant hearing loss, but it is not profound and with hearing aids, I can still understand most of what people say when they speak. I found for playing music however, the hearing aids are an impediment. When playing, the hearing aids come out. I play mostly string instruments and I am not evenly remotely at the level of Evelyn Glennie's proficiency and accomplishment, but I share her passion for musical devises.
My instruments are in every room of my house and garage. Each has its own character and memories. They, in some ways, are like my children. The one I love best is the one I'm playing. I am 16 years her senior, but she said so many things with which I completely identify.
This documentary made my day!
This is what passion looks like.
She is an inspiring and very beautiful human being.
Evelyn Glennie, I'm choked about your way of hearing everything!
She is so inspiring! As a composer, I would leap at the chance to collaborate! Thank heavens there are steel souls such as hers, able to sustain even something as supposedly limiting and career-ending as deafness, and overcome it spectacularly. What a talent!
Barefoot. That is what the best musicians, hearing or deaf should. You should feel the music and let it resonate through your soul. Through your entire body, like she says one big ear. Music strikes your emotions, should touch every part of you. What an amazing journey. Just amazing.
The best musicians - except perhaps organists. They world completely mess up the muscles in their feet if they always play without shoes!
..."beautiful home"...??
for a person who feels sound as Evelyn does, I would think playing /producing sounds on an ancient rock ledge in kings canjon or palm valley, central australia, at night, looking up through a sliver of deep deep dark blue, a campfire and eighteen billion stars, she could take us all home again; place the tender part back in between our wings and heal us all...
thank you evelyn xxx
George Cathro did a superb job producing this segment on such a fascinating person. Very inspiring! Kudos for such a fantastic production. :-)
Wowzers!!!!!!! Amazing to see Evelyn in her gorgeous home. Perfect location. I'd love to see those musical instruments. Epic collection. Who knew percussion could be its own special sauce?!
"Because THAT'S what glues the world together."
I love her passion for music! gives me life!
She's absolutly fkn amazing!
she doesn't "strike" instruments .... in a metronomic type of approach ... every note she plays is part of a fluid dance .... the notes don't so much start and end as cascade. Beautiful. It makes music come alive in a whole new way. Rediscovery.
She is like a savant. So incredibly fascinating. I think I'm in love.
Joe Smith I‘ve been in love since 25 years 😇 She is such an amazing and inspiring musician.
...like any other woman...ultimately a pain in the...
I'm a heterosexual woman and I feel the same way! But she's no savant; just a brilliant, original and lovely person and musician.
Didn't you hear her say she studied like crazy?
a Genius of the highest order
I adore Evelyn Glennie! Such a fantastic musician. I noticed a hammered dulcimer in her collection. I'd love to hear what she can create on that instrument.
It's very inspirational!thank you! I love you! You have been performing in Taiwan, and it's my honor to have photos with you!
SO GREAT!!!! Brilliant documentary! Thank you!
This documentary helped me appreciate percussion much more than ever before.
Relaxing documentary! 😊❤

Evelyn's closet full of mallets has hit me like a meteor to the gut
i had no idea?
yeow!
She made her goddamn desk out some awesome old school mallet keyboard...she's just too much...Too Much BADASSS!!! She's just sick
Go wash your mouth with soap (°V°)
..no kidding..stupid young guy probably..
@@robertallen6710 Swearing is part of a language..nothing wrong with it. Poet Patti Smith uses it! The person above expressed his being inspired by her, enthusiasm and joy in his/her way and you are reprimanding him and putting him down...I find that very uncreative and I wonder how Evelyn would have reacted. My guess is with gratitude and not with a need to be moralistic and stifling.
Time for me to go and practise I think.

Evelyn Glennie is the Martha Argerich of percussion.
Does anyone know the name of this instrument ? 4:11
Thank you !
Early Pink Floyd's innovation comes to mind.
I could NOT Respect or Admire a Musician More than Evelyn.
Has ZERO to do with Female or Deaf.
Easily my Favorite Drummer of ALL Time.
One thing is missing in her collection. Scottish spoon percussion set aha! :)
Who the hell marked this down !
The first son God committed was telling ADAM of all the trees thou may freely eat but the tree of good and evashe thou shall not eat lest ye die
Sudha mam Jo agar ap yah dekhre ho toh aur games ke period do hame
Forgive me for being a dweeb.
Do you play any Frank Zappa??
How does a master percussionist never spent a concert one, in Africa?!
Is she deaf?..I always thought she was..She doesn't talk like she is..?..Brilliant artist btw..of course..that's why I came here..
Yes, but only became profoundly deaf at 12, she was speaking before she became deaf.
@@davidperry7128 ...Yes..nut like i said...she doesn't sound deaf...People whom are deaf have speech problems...I've worked with deaf people..They have problems sounding their words...She doesn't sound like she's struggling with her speech...
I became convivially conversant with you as "Rococo Rick" after you did something droll by Daugherty with the Winston-Salem Symphony 15 yrs ago and it is great to find out what u do all day; I since put forth the idea to challenge The Washington Ballet with you transcribing Mendelssohn Op.54 "Variations serieuses" for Marimba to play in D.C. for their Choo-San Goh stage piano setting. Feel free to suggest the project to TRB. LYS, of course, wot, wot!
