What I love most about Jason is that, in interviews, he tells the truth but also said "But I can't blame anyone for thinking that" or "If I saw that person I'd say that too". Like he knows how to deal with criticism even when it's false.
Pix Tron
He seems like a sincere and genuinely nice guy, who was just in over his head to the extreme. I think that happens a lot with people who try to make large differences, they mean well but end up overwhelmed because they didn’t realize the full extent of what they’re trying to achieve
@@guaceldono7231 That's exactly it. They go in with all they got, trying to do as much good as possible, because who would oppose someone trying to be good? The intentions are pure. But once a campaign catches on and people start throwing money at you, just having good intentions isn't enough anymore, with people's money in your hands you now have to deliver results, even if you never asked for that responsibility. I guess that can be crushing, especially if you raise 100x more than what you planned to. Jason never claimed to be able to manage 20 million bucks, yet that's what was expected of him.

When you guys put it that way it makes me cringe when I look back on how much I mocked all that Kony 2012 shit. Like I thought the dude was just fishing for cash, but when I sit down and watch interviews with the guy he seemed to genuinely care about dem kids. He just didn’t have the means to accomplish his stated goal. If only he had picked up a rifle.
Ummmm it’s not false criticisms. You can have good intentions and still be completely incompetent.
Listening the historian humming along with the song must be the equivalent of a soldier being brainwashed in a POW camp for 5 months. This man sacrificed his own brain integrity to provide us the Truth.
Gay-ping gae-p0r/\/
17:11 "What do you mean shot?"
"They use the gun to shoot them."
Big brains all around in this conversation.
Gotta admit, I had a laugh at that point.
Stupid question warrants a stupid answer
Its funnier because the people in the previous place told him it got shot and he had presumably a while to think over what they meant
His question isn't "what is a gun." Could possibly disbelief. This might not be his first exposure to people getting shot, but it might be, and I dunno. And even if it isn't, he could be asking, "did they shoot the car up? Did they shoot up the people inside? Or just shoot at the car; did the people make it out?" Because that may not be what he said, but most people don't communicate perfectly. Just saying.
That Soldier was probably thinking "What the fuck do you think Gringo? The pointed their guns at them and shot them dead."
Jason: "what do you mean shot?"
Soldier: _"they use the gun to shoot them."_
That was polite of him.
I was thinking the same thing lol.
lol yea wow
I was about to make this exact comment lol.
For a filmmaker, a man who's life purpose is the "shoot" films, and "shoot" the actors in them, this is a reasonable question.
This is a pretty common way to ask for precision about stuff???

And everyone thinks he's either a con artist or a joke

There was an episode of My Name Is Earl where essentially, due to the main character's innate obligation to fulfill the tasks on his list and the related urge to balance out the wastefulness and pollution of the people around him, he gets overwhelmed with the idea of where the environment is headed and how impossible it is to address by himself.

If they don‘t know where Kony is, maybe they can make him put up Shia‘s „They will not divide us“ flag. I bet 4chan‘s going to know his location in 3 to 4 hours after that.
If Kony was constantly streaming footage from a camera at his location, then yes, it would be easy to track him down.
"The car was shot"
"What do you mean by shot?"
Hmm, finally some real questions.
Well, it could have been just hit a couple times, it could have been lit the fuck up, the car could have been wrecked but the people survived, or the other way around, etc. "The car was shot" leaves a lot of ambiguity.

Thank you for making this video. Your effort to clear a man's name was, at least to me, quite noble and effective.
I met Jason Russel once at a Christian convention before the whole Kony thing happened. It was for the bracelet campaign. He was genuinely concerned about the people there and I feel real bad at how he is remembered.

Exactly! It's like those movies you could buy at a mall kiosk where they take a picture and put you in a music video or children's story or whatever.
The song is actually a parody of Michael Jackson’s “We are Here to Change the World” from the 1986 Disney film “Captain EO.” You can find it on UA-cam, actually.
Actually? Actually can?
Something that's been really bugging me about this is how everyone just dog-piled on him during his meltdown and spread misinformation. I can't stand it when people pick on others who are at their weakest, be it physically or psychologically; it's cowardly and cruel, and it infuriates me. It's so easy to prod at someone when they don't have the capacity to fight back.
When media outlets and personalities don't have any source of legit news and headlines that really matter, they go for the one that can generate viral views and clicks regardless of if its true or not.
@@ferro1398 You realize that "legit news" is the same, right?

You are giving your attention to this stuff while complaining that the media bbn puts a spotlight on that stuff. A year late, but I want to say something about the Mental Hospital. I've been to at least a treatment center sort of place, where they normally throw them for maybe two weeks. Worst week of my life. I get nightmares every so often. It wasn't even somewhere where the people were the problem. It was the sheer just surreal state of being there. You're watched 24/7, someone checks on your every 15 minutes when you sleep. Wake up at this time, eat at this time, go to weird group sessions. Today we're thinking about how to feel happy. Today we talk about how drugs work, sort of. The 'windows' are made of like a plastic you can't kill yourself with, at least easily. You basically just get the clothes you came in with and you can ask for a track suit at most. We started with 5 television channels, ended with 2. Trump got elected while I was in there... was weird. I'd imagine prison is *WAY* worse, but when you're wanting to kill yourself and you're forced to not want that. Forced to tell them what they want to hear so you can leave, on the whims of someone else. The law says you are a danger to yourself, so now they get to take you away and do what they want, when you've essentially done nothing wrong, and then foot the 2,000 dollar bill and end with the same state you started with... I'm not sure where I was going with that. It's bad.
May I ask what reason you went to a treatment center
I spent a month in a mental hospital as a teenager, it was definitely the worst month of my life, once I got out I said no matter how bad I feel in the future I’ll never go back to anywhere like that

The fact he's singing along with the song is adorable
The whole "We need to arrange the books in my house in chronological order" thing was probably some attempt by him to see if he can notice any trends in the way humanity behaves to see if there's a pattern to the societies described in the books he owns so he can predict what the next generation will behave like.

Regarding his mental breakdown, I had a similar personal experience...
My issue was caused by stress and insufficient sleep & food intake over a 5 day period causing a brain chemical imbalance, making me act loopy as if I was on drugs and/or nuts. I was voluntarily committed in a mental ward for 3 weeks. They diagnosed me as being "Bipolar" and put me on Lithium & one other medication which I can't recall. I recovered and was required to remain on the medication and undergo 1 month of follow-up appointments after being discharged. I stopped taking the medication immediately after that and have not had any issue since because I've made certain to eat enough and get sufficient sleep.
All this happened when I was 19 and I'll be 41 in a few months.

So i haven't gone and done it myself. but i have a lot of friends at a local church who have worked with invisible children back in the day. and granted the 30% model is... not great. i had a group of.. 10ish friends who ended up traveling to Uganda and they helped create a rehabilitation center as well as put in wells for a better cleaner water supply rather than walking 5 or more miles to a local stream or watering hole and filling up jugs there. and i remember fairly vividly that they got fairly regular updates about the wells, and how people were doing. how former child soldiers were able to progress and try to lead "normal" lives after living through all that trauma. and in the end some of them actually came to the states to our church to share their stories and whatnot. so. i will say that the whole kony 2012 thing was a crazy/odd pipe dream of a viral sensation. the outcome to actual people was not all bad. and hearing stories from actual former child soldiers and seeing how their lives changed is quite sobering to say the least. cheers mate keep up the great content
Ok git your point across but no need to write a essay.
The media hype and "memeness" surrounding it coupled with his breakdown definitely downplayed that he had good intentions behind his efforts. At least I think he did.
You know you're fucked when you need some people to fly from the other side of the planet to dig up a fucking well for you.
Thank you for sharing this and it's great to hear how even small changes can greatly help someone.
Alexey Saranchev Money and technology. Also, the government don’t seem to care. Either on a national level or local level. Perhaps even down to the village leaders themselves.
That music video...
Those outfits had more layers than Shrek's onions. May mid-2000s fashion never die.
Thank you for this very thorough Q&A and for giving Jason real understanding. I understand he made mistakes- a lot of things, as you said led up to this. However, thank you for recognizing the pressure, scope and mental health issues that Jason faced, as well as some of the reasons for some of the odd videos invisible Children put out. There is always more to the story. I'm not saying it excuses the mistakes, but instead, it helps us begin to understand the complexity of these issues.
10:49 looks like that shirt just has the image taped on
Yeah, thought the same. Bad packing tape........
Lmao you linked a god damn Townsends video about 1600s era cooking as the secret link of the day, you absolute madlad.
They're a great channel, john is one of the best presenters of anything on UA-cam
@@rump438 Yeah, I love their content as well. I'm just surprised to see him mentioned here as his content is so radically different from Historian's.
what’s up Justin Y.
@@JustinY. Have you checked out Internet Historian's other channel where he reads Kingdom Come?
Seems like you’re coming back
My brother went through a mental break down during a stressful time like Jason, but it happened in front of me. back then i would have laughed along with everyone about him jacking it; but know i kind of get what the guy was going through and how impactful stress and not being able to talk to anyone about shit going on in your head.
Imagine being at the top of that hill then all of a sudden an army of dancing woke white folk come ascending towards you

"He used his gun to shoot him."
This is some The Room type dialogue
The bank saves money, and they are *using* me...and I am the fool.
Yo I'm ngl I'm pretty stoned right now, but that part where they turn teenagers into backup dancers with magic is amazing
i'm saying bro, i thought i was gonna have to skip the musical but it sucked me in i can't lie
"JASON"
Internet Historian: "I don't know why, I thought that was funny"
*Meanwhile, in The Engoodening of No Man's Sky video*
"SHAAAAAAAUUUUUUUNNNNN"
That's the best (and so far only) Fredrik Knudsen refenerence I've seen.
I love his down the rabbit hole series, it's incredible and incredibly accurate (the scp one was perfect and I didn't catch anything wrong with the facts he dug up)
Met Jason at san diego like 4 years ago, really great guy, I feel bad for him especially what he went through mentally.
I miss Internet Herstorian helping you with the questions. How's she doing?
I would guess they broke up but I have no knowledge just a guess
@@zachfakename3747 Weren't they married...?
She took the kids most likely
@@ArtyTheta Nah. She's busy. In the kitchen.
She's with me now but I'm bored of her.
"They shot the vehicle"
What do you mean shot?"
"They use the gun and they shoot."
"We need to do what we always do; dance!"
Impeccable logic.
9:06 - You can make an entire horror movie franchise about that facial expression.

The musical bit was essentially a cheap knock-off of the Michael Jackson song "We Are Here to Change the World", which was one of two songs featured on the Disney 3-D film Captain EO. And yes, they butchered it in every way possible.
Invisible children had no hooter and that’s why it was bad.
@@whitecastleemployee8944 And no funky bass solo either.
@@whitecastleemployee8944 When I read the word hooter, all I hear is Michael's voice screaming at hooter lol
Damn it, Hooter!
They don't even grab their crotches! 0/10.
I remember these three dudes coming to my middle school and having us watch the entire "Invisible Children" documentary. I also remember getting a pretty weird vibe from that Jason fella. Never imagined I'd ever end up seeing him running naked in the streets though.
OMG, YES, I thought of the Heavy Rain Jason a bit during the video, I'm happy to see you did seriously consider throwing that in somewhere and the remnant of that.
want to hear something even more crazy? Jon Chu's dad owns a chinese restaurant in Los Altos California called Chef Chu's. I have been there a few times, good chinese food.
LFP Animations really? i live near los altos. is it good?
im dumb you said it was good in your comment

About George Clooney's satiettle, "He doesn't own it. He's renting it."
*Well* Now that you put it like that it's completely different! 🤣
The musical is legit pretty good though, with the times in mind. Compare it to all the workplace/school song and dance videos you've seen over the years.
My lord a double upload, *you absolute madman.*
You know that means we won't hear from him again until 2023.
Andre Moreau better savor it for a while till the next vid
Double upload? What have we done to deserve this blessing?
Dabing on them haters
The musical was actually very enjoyable and finding out who helped direct it blew my mind
"What do you mean shot?"
It's like watching Ice T's character on SVU all over again. :)
Oh, I get it. You mean like when someone drinks too much, or snorts cocaine, or bets the house on the ponies?
Or like when some smokes too many cigarettes? Or like when someone shops too much with credit cards? Or like when someone plays too many scratchy lotteries? Or like when someone eats too much chocolate cake? Or like when someone eats too much chocolate cake and then barfs it up?
Question is, can we now expect the Fyre Q+A?
Every time Internet Historian goes long stretches without uploading i assume Ocampo got to him
He hasn't uploaded becaus the internet in Australia is upside-down so it sucks
Yeah, trying to upload a vid and it gets downloaded instead. FFS!
