So apparently the Heene family had to pay that 36k fine and go to jail, not because any evidence was found against them, but because the police basicly threatened them and blackmailed them into pleading guilty? Thumps up to the justice system.
I just want to say how nice it was that the woman from Wife Swap went on national television to defend Richard. Most people would portray Richard in the worst light possible for the attention, but she gave her honest impression of him and his children.
She lied, unintentionally, but she did lie. Richard, the psychopath, player her - couldn't risk smearing his rep on the show he desperately wanted on to get attention.

I do find it interesting that so many people bring up "But Heene is an asshole", as if that changes anything. So what if he is? You can still be an unpleasant person and also NOT guilty of a crime you're being accused of.
@@totozhu4543 I have 2 kids. They do shit ALL THE TIME without thinking and sometimes when there's legitimate danger, you kinda go off more than what is reasonable. 2 am on a Friday night like 8 months ago I hear my overly dramatic 4 year old screaming (kid screams and cries like he's just been shot over minor things) so I go downstairs and he's got a gouge in his forehead half inch above his eye. Obviously I started freaking out like he's dying and grabbed him, tossed him in the car and took off for the hospital. I still catch that fucker jumping on his bed or the couch, 8 stitches later. I've learned to tone it down, but the first couple of times after his incident I definitely got angrier and louder than what's reasonable, but that night scared the fuck out if me and u really thought he was seriously hurt. Honestly for the first week after the fact, I woke up in the middle of the night just to check on both kids like 4 or 5 times every night.
You know that clichè corrupt prosecutor or cop in so many crime shows/movies that says something like "so what if he's innocent of this crime, he's a bad guy and has probably broken a bunch of laws. We just haven't caught him yet" The trope is an extension of the very silly and overly simplistic idea that there are "good people" in the world, and "bad people" in the world. That "bad people" should be punished, and the misunderstanding that the criminal justice system is punitive when in reality it's reformative. Many people empathise with that position. It's why it's such a clichè trope of the genre, people actually think that way. When they bring up that they think he's an asshole (and we have no evidence for that either) they're saying they don't care if he's actually guilty or innocent, they don't like him so he must be a "bad guy" and deserve punishment.
This was absolutely brilliant. At first I thought this might be just another funny story but it quickly turned into great piece of actual journalism that those people in media should have done in first place.
Jaydev Raol but it’s very dry. Internet historian only points out the faults in what the investigators did but then just concludes that it means the father was innocent.
The fact that the parents didn't react at all when the kid said "I did it for the show" should be taken into consideration. They didn't react cause they had no idea what he meant.
They’ve now pardoned the parents, but the messed up thing is they didn’t admit to how they scared the parents into a guilty plea or that the conviction was wrong. The judge just said “it’s time to move on” without admitting it was a false conviction, so legally they are pardoned but their reputation will still forever be tarnished because of a messed up justice system
While it is bullshit, I don't think their reputation is forever ruined. At least, not any more. Do you see a single person in this comment section who isn't on their side? Sure, many people still believe it's a hoax, but now they have a lot of avid supporters. They aren't in the best situation ever, I'll freely admit that. But they're in a much better place then they were before.
While I agree with you, I do disagree on one thing.-the guilty plea. He absolutely was made to plead guilty. Most times, trying to plea not guilty could get you a hell of a lot more time... And it takes even longer for the case to find a person guilty or innocent after a long and drawn out and traumatizing (for the kids especially) trial. Our justice system is completely broken in America. I wish Mr. Heene knew that going in. It's always portrayed in the movies that getting a lawyer automatically equals guilt. That's just not how it works. A lawyer could have stopped all of this from happening and from the children being traumatized by being taken away from their parents... Bc if I remember correctly, I saw a video from Mr. Heene's where he talks about losing his children over this event. I have nothing but sympathy for them and the children. Our justice system so desperately needs to be fixed.
@Donald Smith therefore he's guilty and should be getting raped in prison for 70 years before they fry him in guantamo? yeah that sounds american to me.
@Ali - a memes I'm not even american, fuckwit. my country's police are the best trained in the world and they're tested regularly for physical strength and mental health. what's america got? corrupt idiots everywhere and you don't even care - very patriotic.
There's also the fact that when Falcon says that thing about the show, his parents don't panic. You'd think that if it was actually a hoax, they'd at least react in some way or another to their masterplan being exposed.
Completely agree Elle! No panic at all about their “master plan” being exposed. Also, in the heene follow-up vid, DHS interrogated each kid for almost 3 hours each and found nothing that showed that falcon’s story was fake or that he “did it for the show”… very likely story is that falcon just misunderstood question and parents had no idea that his answer would be twisted in a way by media to imply that maybe they were faking it.
There is one thing that I am surprised you didn't bring up. Which is the son's alternative motivation for hiding. The father was very angry about the loss of his expensive scientific equipment. Not just the balloon but also the electronics inside it. So the father begins to shout at and blame the people around him. When you are six years old and approximately quarter the size of your dad that is absolutely terrifying. It's not hard to imagine that the second the father started shouting the little kid immediately gets the fuck out of there.
@@josvoi2854 True but it didn't sound like that he started beating her or the kids. My father growing up my would go into yelling rages. But to my knowledge he had never hit my mother, and though he did spank me it wasn't ever anything like a beating. Scared the shit out of me as a kid. But he wasn't a monster or shouldn't set off any alarms for getting verbally angry.
So the police exhorted confessions under false pretenses, interviewed children without their parents there, straight up lied at some points, and practically forced an innocent man to plead guilty because they didn't want to admit that this was just a misunderstanding. Wow. My faith in the justice system is totaled.
Richard was definitely an eccentric man, but the media spun it in a way that made him look like an insane and bad parent. Mayumi was not very fluent in English, but the media spun it in a way that made her look like she couldn't hold her story together and lied. Falcon was a child who was playing and hiding from his parents (as all children have done at some point), but the media spun it in a way that made him look like he was part of some grand scheme his parents cooked up for attention. And people wonder why the justice system and media are corrupted.
Donald Smith EXACTLY. The story might be more believable if I hadn’t seen the infomercial of him acting, the exaggerated antics etc. The ballon scene was eerily similar to the tone, behavior & acting style of the infomercial. The kids followed their scripts perfectly except when they were caught off guard w/questions they weren’t prepped on. I wanted to have an open mind about this but after finishing this video, there’s not a doubt in my mind it was a hoax.
@@maryb6672 The police was proved to be sort of corrupt. In some parts of the case the police wasn't in the law to do it. Nothing was found on any of the devices the family owned. And in the infomercial they probably had several takes while they only had one take to shoot the video with the balloon. Also, why did Richard leave his equipment on the balloon? Even if he did do it the police there deserves to be brought to justice and punished for going outside of the law. The whole case relies on flimsy pieces of evidence (if you can even call it that.) The confession (from Mayumi) given didn't make any sense so the only "evidence" could have been the boy said they did it for the show. Why did the police say that Richard called the news first while call logs show otherwise?
I'm far more likely to believe the police tried to force flimsy bullshit stuff as solid evidence for a prosecution while under the scrutiny of the national media. It has happened so many freaking times. A lot of times, the bastards don't care about due process and just cover up their BS. The legal system in America is absolutely fucked up.
@Donald Smith "why would children say something they think happened" Because children are pretty stupid and say dumb shit when they are nervous. They are shitty actors. If the parents were scared, and kids _that_ young saw their parents freak out. They'd soon confess and rat out the younger brother that was hiding somewhere in the house.

Extremely so. I'm amazed he didn't lawyer up and take it to appeals, any good lawyer would have beat his dick reading that case file and winning that case (any lawyer even mildly competent would have teabagged that case into dismissal with prejudice) would have gotten him quite a bit of publicity given the media frenzy surrounding the story. Everything was seriously overacted, the kicking of the stand, the stuttering, and then yelling at the son to shut up. Somehow the last 4 seconds of the video: “WHAT?!?” Was convincing for you?
It’s always been awe inspiring that, despite the memes and jokes, Internet Historian is a damn good researcher and always looks deeper into the subject for the other side. He did it with Richard’s family, and he managed to change the perception of Sean Murray who a lot of people saw as a manipulative liar into the super introverted technical producer who can’t do public speaking and was suddenly shoved into prominence from a big company. However, he has yet to be exonerated and the reason given for the pardon was not that Richard was innocent, but that Richard Heene "has paid the price in the eyes of the public." He is still guilty according to the media and the courts. Even in this pardon, there is still no justice.

it's easy to look back at things that happened nearly a decade ago and pick things apart, but there was a reason things went the way they went all those years ago. The media decided on a narrative and that was that. case closed. I feel really bad for the guy though, there is literally nothing you can to against a popular media narrative.
Even if you think that, it's no excuse for the way he was treated. Also he thought I he lost an extraordinarily time consuming project and not even a minute later, thought his son was in danger, yelling seems perfectly justified. If anything, the initial impression from that video helped push the narrative the media wanted to create.
This happened to my dad. My brother disappeared but he was hiding in a footlocker. He didn't come when called. My dad broke down in tears searching the neighborhood for him. He also mentioned he did the same to my grandfather while hiding in the upper shelf of his closet.
When you consider how poorly the question was framed "so what's with the balloon thing?" it is a simple matter to understand why he said "it was for the show". Falcon may not have been talking about the balloon escapade, but why they built the balloon in the first place, which makes his answer 100% correct and benign. They built the balloon for the internet channel/show his dad did.
Or, what I find more likely, and I'm surprised, that this scenario isn't mentioned in the video or the comments that I read until now, the kids figured that they would prank their parents and then were too scared to opt out. Watch the video about the liftoff again! See how Bertram or how the kid is called, starts saying that Falcon is in the craft? Heene doesn't really believe him, he says that he has seen him earlier around. The kid repeats it a little more enthusiastically, in a little more panicked voice, which makes the father believe him. Fast forward to the first interwiev, where Falcon says: "You guy said it was for the show". Didn't he mean his brothers under "you guys", instead of his family? For my part, I would call my siblings "you guys" easier than my parents. And there was zero clarification on this later on. Everyone focused on wrecking the life of an innocent man. We all know how kids are. I did stupid shit when I was of that age. I am sure that you, reading this, did too. So in my opinion, a likely scenario is, that the three brothers tried to prank their parents, but the prank got out of hand. And this is the way a man got fucked in the butt by the media and the judical system. Kids, I ask you in the name of this man, this poor soul, who suffered innocently, to be more responsible with your pranks. And always take responsibility for whatever autistic shit you pull off.
@Diane Berg why though? Should he have just rescued the boy himself and face murder charges if he was unable to do so? Who else was he gonna contact? Your mom?

Was he thinking of his wife, his kids, all the pride that he had so suck down to made a false statement just to avoid the repercussions on going against a great injustice. He had all the reasons to hate on the world, but was brought down to his knees because of its injustices.
Nikko A. The police confiscated his computers and files, and camera's, it wouldn't be hard to find out it really was fake with that kind of evidence, but no, they found nothing. They only had one balloon too, so they must've had to do a really damn fine job at acting, they pulled off a better job then most actor's do, it's almost too real.
fattyeater What the fuck goes through your head when you feel the need to correct? You obviously understood what he was saying as you were able to find the correct word to use instead. Just fuck off
You can hear the emotion in the voices during the 911 call. I don't know how anyone thought they were lying. They'd have to be the best actors ever to pull it off...
If it WAS a hoax, the parents would have interjected when Falcon “spilled the beans” on CNN. You’ve seen it before: a wife, just and, or child says something incriminating and the other person jumps in to qualify the statement or clarify “what you really meant to say”.... they let falcon talk and stammer for a while, I can’t see a guilty couple doing that.
Also, you would think they wouldn't even let the kids do the interview for fear they might say something wrong. Also, people who claim the video seemed scripted. The dad comes off as an a hole in that video. If he's trying to get a TV show, wouldn't you think he'd be more tv friendly and not a dad who let's f bombs fly in front of little kids? Whose going to watch that clip and be like, let's give this guy a reality show.
I mean, it doesn't look good, but I think 911 had a pretty good reason for doing that. They don't get trained for stuff like that at the academy, and most likely the dispatcher was panicking. They're trained to act calm so that they don't panic the callers as well. Going on hold could have been to get help from her superiors or making a separate call (to rescue services, perhaps). And please don't critique the dispatcher's questions- why do you think that you would know more about asking questions than a police dispatcher?
The dispatcher has to talk to aviation authorities presumably. It’s not some run of the mill “call an ambulance or police cars” thing, they have to get helicopters and drones and shit
11:54 - 12:24 Interesting thing to note is that, though Heene apologizes immediately, he only starts to choke on his words when making mention of *who* he's apologizing to. He struggles for a solid 10 seconds before finally naming the rescue workers, and then several seconds longer before he gives up and vaguely refers to 'everyone else.' He can't even bring himself to specifically mention the police - the police he'd been rallying against on charges of corruption a few years prior, and the police that threatened to bankrupt him and deport his wife. He even looks like he's going to start crying while he's trying to think of how to phrase the apology. This isn't the body language of someone that feels guilty over being caught - it's shame because they know what they're doing NOW is wrong.
@@StandardGoose His point is he seems to have trouble apologising like it's morally wrong not that he's angry that he got caught but a sadness in wondering if he's right to apologise
I remember this from years ago. I knew the boy probably wasn't in the balloon simply by the way the balloon moved. You've said that the balloon has enough lift potential to float, I'll trust that, but it still didn't move as though it carried much weight. It's like when you watch an actor drinking a takeout coffee and you can see that there's clearly nothing in the cup simply by the way the cup is being manipulated.
it was full of helium the kid would have been dead or unconcious if inside so he would have been laying down and not moving in the basket area where there is a wooden frame to keep its shape.
@@Timeward76 - Did you think my analogy with empty or full cups was comparing how it feels to me when iiiii pick it up? Because that's not what I said.
@@Timeward76the section where the kid would have been would have been weighed down. It'd clearly have been noticable based on how the balloon moved it that were the case. You don't have to be an expert to make that observation.
There's understanding, and then there's "being the prosecutor winning a high-profile case can do your career - and the career of those who help you - a lot of good." They don't _care_. Any criminal lawyer will tell you, justice is an accidental byproduct of the legal system.
Vault-Born, It doesn't matter that it never went before a jury. Criminal proceedings, like Heene's where he was sentenced for a Felony charge of attempt to influence a Public Servant, is always supposed to be tried under the "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" standard considering that the verdict can deprive people of their freedom or even end their life in some circumstances. I wouldn't jump on the corruption conspiracy very quickly though. While it was felony charge, the actual fines and jail time involved were so meager that the Judge may have been operating a bit more loosely than is common in a criminal trial.
@@inspectorjavert8443 Probably because they only comment on current events when they do episodes such as the Xbox vs PS4 episode, there was a massive uproar in the media about which was better so naturally South Park comments on it in their own way, same with the rather recent pandemic special episode which again was commenting on current events, this bullshit with the balloon wouldn't have justified dedicating an entire damn episode to so it would be better to be left in the background while the actual episode focused on the more important stuff.

You know that clichè corrupt prosecutor or cop in so many crime shows/movies that says something like "so what if he's innocent of this crime, he's a bad guy and has probably broken a bunch of laws. We just haven't caught him yet"
The trope is an extension of the very silly and overly simplistic idea that there are "good people" in the world, and "bad people" in the world.

Just checked out the editing history on Wikipedia. Apparently, on October 22 2019, almost all of the information in Heene's defense (and what IH referenced in this video) was removed, the article was perma-locked to prevent editing, and the name of the article was changed from "scandal" to "hoax". This is fucked up.
EDIT: Richard Heene has been pardoned by the Governor of Colorado. However, he has yet to be exonerated and the reason given for the pardon was not that Richard was innocent, but that Richard Heene "has paid the price in the eyes of the public." He is still guilty according to the media and the courts. Even in this pardon, there is still no justice.

Kinda. Never talk to the police without a lawyer *if* they read you your Miranda rights. If they don’t do that than nothing you say can be legally used against you in court. If they don’t do that and than use what you said in court you can sue or even bring it to a higher court.
While this maybe true, talking to them can help with them getting warrants, further harassment, and them digging deeper on you. Unless you are getting pulled over for a traffic stop, never talk to the police.

Interesting thing to note is that, though Heene apologizes immediately, he only starts to choke on his words when making mention of *who* he's apologizing to.
So he didn't feel guilty about being caught. What does that prove? Lots of people get caught and don't feel bad about it.

it was full of helium the kid would have been dead or unconcious if inside so he would have been laying down and not moving in the basket area where there is a wooden frame to keep its shape.
We all have expertise with cups to know how heavy or light they should feel when full. I doubt either of us is an aluminum baloon expert.
@@Timeward76 - Did you think my analogy with empty or full cups was comparing how it feels to me when iiiii pick it up? Because that's not what I said.
The kid would have just ripped through the bottom anyways....its aluminum foil held together by tape....
@@Timeward76the section where the kid would have been would have been weighed down. It'd clearly have been noticable based on how the balloon moved it that were the case. You don't have to be an expert to make that observation.
I love how “hot chicks” is just his wife in a bra.
@Lord Manhammer take your meds
@Texas_Tim95 What a clown
to be fair, Mayumi probably wouldn't appreciate him getting other chicks in bras on his show
Hey, at least he ain't a cheater 🤷♂️
Kinda wholesome honestly
Holy shit this guy needs to get a law degree, like seriously I would hire him like no questions asked.
agreed
this video took alot of time to make but i guess teh court system is slow too.
Like
Pink Llama mike ross became a lawyer without a degree 😆
the police questioning mayumis citizenship is fucked up
This is the first time I've actually heard about this incident...I feel so bad for the family.
Don't.
@@2RG_ Go be annoying somewhere else.
"Beyond a reasonable doubt" seems to be understood more by a memer than an entire court system. Hmm...
There's understanding, and then there's "being the prosecutor winning a high-profile case can do your career - and the career of those who help you - a lot of good." They don't _care_. Any criminal lawyer will tell you, justice is an accidental byproduct of the legal system.
The House always wins.
Vault-Born,
It doesn't matter that it never went before a jury.
They plead guilty to the charges. They weren't tried at all.
@@Bl4ckDr4co Judges decide whether to accept pleas. Felony charges must first pass a grand jury by preponderance.
This happened in Colorado? And Southpark didn't do an episode on it? I'm legitimately shocked.
They had reference to it, as a newspaper headline
@@inspectorjavert8443 Probably because they only comment on current events when they do episodes such as the Xbox vs PS4 episode, there was a massive uproar in the media about which was better so naturally South Park comments on it in their own way, same with the rather recent pandemic special episode which again was commenting on current events, this bullshit with the balloon wouldn't have justified dedicating an entire damn episode to so it would be better to be left in the background while the actual episode focused on the more important stuff.
When the internet is better than the police
