"Succession" had a bittersweet, if tragic ending. Shiv is basically in the same position with Tom as Caroline was with Logan, trapped in a loveless marriage with a Waystar CEO, with a child that she's not sure that she really wants, Roman goes back to hanging out in bars, free from the expectations, but still traumatised from the entire ordeal. Kendall is alone, having fractured his relationships with all of his friends and siblings, unable to live up to his dad's legacy.

Both shows finale had a scene of a kid watching this idealized version of their father, in succession its an intimate home video showing a warm side Logan intentionally hid from his kids and in barry it's a detached Hollywood adaptation beyond Barry's control.
Barry embraces the artifce while succesion reveals the humanity.

I also loved the finale of Barry and wasn't sure why it was so disliked among fans. I thought it was the perfect ending that stayed true to the themes present from the very beginning, like you said. Great video !

I also like season one of most shows. It’s when characters feel more dynamic.

Good video but I strongly disagree about Barry S3 being the weakest and not having tension. I think it’s the most tense season of the entire show and the tonal shift was brilliant for keeping the show from becoming formulaic. Barry S3 is my favorite season and S4 is probably my least favorite although it was still great.

Love your take on death and its real effect felt in someone’s absence. Great parallels between 2 of My favourite shows over the past years. Ps fellow member of Team Tom! ;D

Hey ! Great video as always, would love if you started having chapters to these kind of videos, for example I didn't watch Barry but still wanted to see the succession parts of the video, so having chapters could have helped.

Hey, thanks for watching! I’m still considering doing this, but because I also discuss Barry spoilers in the Succession section and extrapolate on themes from the Barry section I don’t want to mislead people into thinking it’s an entirely clean break/separate review

On the subject of death as an absence, not a perceived act: there's an animated short film from John Burningham called "Granpa" wherein the titular grandfather's death is not communicated through hospital visits or a funeral, but simply his grandchild seeking him out in his greenhouse or living room, only to not find him and process, all without words, that he's gone.

    Unpopular opinions:
    - I think Gene deserves this ending.
    - I think people give too much excuses for Sally’s behavior because of how she’s a victim of abuses that they refuse to see that she’s still a bad person on her own without her violent ex husbands and dysfunctional family.
    - Fuches NEVER redeem himself. Like dude spent the whole show puppeteering Barry into committing atrocities (the blood of Barry’s victims are on Fuches’ hands as well) and using that to destroy Barry’s life out of spite but suddenly everyone thinks he’s a good guy now thanks to one act of kindness? This is the same BS as Darth Vader. If people are mad at Sally for not telling her son she love him, they should be mad at how Fuches got away with his crimes as well.

Shiv in the end gets what she really wants. Submission to a man she can respect and a way to keep herself in the game, albeit via different means. Her decision was just as much a selfish one as for any other reason. Tom might be an empty suit but he no longer keeps her on a pedestal and has at least nominally replaced her father in the company, finally and begrudgingly earning her respect. She has the baby though and will no doubt use it as leverage over him and as a means by which to continue her scheming, except now with a more feminine flavour. This will be much easier than continuing to try and manipulate her brothers. For all her ideals, she gave her hand to the man who will support the supposed fascist. Power wins in the end. Who cares who's the president when it is the media that creates the reality. Better to be married to a man high up in that hierarchy than be left out in the cold. It was a calculated decision.

I disagree, it's ben made clear throughout the series that not only did Shiv want the position herself but she did not support Tom in his pursuit of the same role.
She ultimately will live a life parallel to her mothers, she has no power as she is outside of the business now, no board seat nothing. Simply a trophy wife for Tom who can and probably will get rid of her since he wasn't sure if he wanted to continue the relationship.
Power does win and the Roy children now have none, simply wealth. Shivs choice was a selfish one yes but not in the sense you've interpreted. It was selfish in the sense that if she could not have it then she would not let Kendall have it either, the truest belief Shiv has ever had is that she feels the most competent of the children and hence, she believes both Kendall and Roman to be incompetent. The children have objectified the company to be the physical representation of their fathers love an approval, there is no chance for Shiv to allow Kendall to receive the embodiment of what they all craved from their father.
