Girl, you are too cool for school. I have never seen anything like the Kawandi and I absolutely love it. Thanks so much for sharing your talent and wisdom. You make it look so easy.
Hello Holly! LOL, I'm delighted you like this video! This method of doing a Kawandi is so addicting and there is no waste because you just fold it over and hide it in the quilt. The flannel or any batting you choose to work with goes in after the first round of scrap fabric is added to the outer edge of the quilt. You can also sew your smallest pieces together to make little crumb blocks and add these in as a piece of fabric. I hope you have a beautiful week ahead! Thank you for watching and your support of our little channel.
Thanks for shearing, I really love your words and nice compliment.

Thank you for your great tutorials on this technique. I love how piecing, sandwiching and quilting is all done at the same time! Your quilt is beautiful.

Is there a Stiletto Convention meeting we haven’t heard about?! Thanks for a great tutorial. I sent this on to a couple of friends who are also interested. ❤️

Hi Jag1357! The flannel goes in right after the first round of scrap fabric is sewn on the outer edge of the backing. I added long narrow pieces of flannel and didn't work with a big huge piece. You could also use your walking foot to make sure the work stays flat but I didn't have any problems. Thank you for your comment and support!
This is impressive. Never heard of Kawandi, thanks for sharing You have a great eye for hue. The position of the colors really pop on this quilt. Great job

As a person who has never before learned how to do kawandi (but am an experienced quilter), I found this video confusing. It's pretty disorganized, and skips steps that a total beginner needs to be told to take or see happen. For example, I can see that, as she moves to work done at a later time, the entire face of the quilt is sewn/quilted at close intervals (I presume the distance from needle to presser foot edge???). But she never tells us to do that, she just shows us how to sew the edges of each new piece down. Only sewing down the edges would not create that even quilting topstitch over the face of the quilt. I'll go and watch other people's videos, and I expect they will also have gaps in instruction, and hopefully when I put it all together I'll know how to make one of these suckers:)
Hello Lynn! I'm sorry that you didn't enjoyed our video! I hope you have a lovely week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on Oct 5, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.

I have used very very tiny scraps like in a crazy quiltbblock fashion, but i discovered this method of making quilts when i was researching quiltmaking from the country of India. I have a friend who is originally from India and found how to make Kantha quilts. Im so excited to try these! My friend sells cotton Indian dresses so i got some toake these types of quilts. I cannot think of a better way to honor her heriage and possibly others!!

I have done a handstitched Kawandi lap quilt. I just got a new sewing machine, a Singer Heavy Duty 6800kc. I had started a second project, but just got a couple of patches on one edge. Guess my seam ripper will be used. I like the hand stitched version. but I am looking forward to doing a machine stitched version. I can use smaller scraps and I have found a lovely variegated machine quilting thread at JoAnn Fabrics. Supposedly getting a donation of fabrics from a neighbor's relative who recently passed.

Well, this is really new to me. A Kawandi quilt. I’m blown away, Brenda! You do such good work and I love watching you work. Do you not put batting inside? Very curious about this quilt. I’m going to watch this again and again. Hopefully, I will get busy and try this. ❤
Hello Patricia! I'm happy that you liked my video. The flannel (batting) was laid in place right after the first round was completed. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a peaceful week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on Dec 2, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
If you lap the other way, turn under the piece you’re on and put it over the next piece. You will be going down the little step and not get puckering
Hi Bella-Bee! Thank you for your kind words and support!
I love the way you teach. I have never tried Kawandi quilting before. Do you think this would work with non cotton cloth? I have bits and pieces of fabric I would like to use, that I would not use in my "traditional" quilting. Your channel is the only one I found using a machine. (old hands) lol. Thank you very much.
Hello Angela! I'm delighted that you liked our video. The Sidee women use any fabric they find for this so, why not use your non traditional fabric. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a splendid week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on Feb 3, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
What a beautiful work of art!!
Hello Debra! I'm delighted you like this video!
The traditional Kawandi is definitely not machine sewn. The whole idea of kawandi is to sew ‘in the moment’…slow stitching. Perhaps this could be called ‘inspired by kawandi’ ….definitely NOT kawandi.
Hello Irene! I'm delighted that you liked my video. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew. I hope you have an amazing week ahead! Oy! Lots of puckers especially on the corners not on the edges of the fabric!!! Tried walking foot-no help. :(
Hello User-jb3wc9yp4m! I'm glad that you liked our video. I also used a looser stitch and that helped ease the fabrics into place under a walking foot. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a fabulous week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on Feb 3, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hi
I just found out about this quilt last night. Is amazing how with all the stitching and adding of fabric that there’s no puckering in the back. I would like to know is there something you did to ensure a neat backing??
I dont have many scraps, but will be looking for cotton remnants and fashioning different shapes to work with! Thank you so much!
Hello Theres! I'm glad that you liked our video. I was surprised about no puckering as well, also as I worked this piece it started to have a volcano in the middle that disappeared as I finished the middle. I think it was because I used a walking foot helped. Happy New Year to you and your family! The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt video will drop at the first of the month and it is going to be a free sew along. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! The next virtual Zoom sew date is on Jan 6, 2024 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
It looks absolutely lovely. The Siddi’s put a pfouff (spelling?) which is a flower on each corner. Have you come across this technique?
Hello Judy! I'm delighted you like this video! This method of doing a Kawandi is so addicting and there is no waste because you just fold it over and hide it in the quilt. Yes, I was sewing on the second little flower and my cat, Albert was ripping off the first so I stopped sewing on the little flowers altogether. I just came across this video. I've never heard of kwandi quilts before and your quilt is absolutely gorgeous! I have a question. Maybe I missed it but it looks like you have the front and back but I never saw the middle layer, i.e. batting. Is it made without batting or did I just miss that?
Hello Nana! I'm happy that you enjoyed my video. I made the middle out of flannel scraps that are tucked around the edge as soon as that first row around the outer edge is done. The Psychedelic Snowflake quilt is going to be a free sew along this fall. I hope you have an amazing week ahead! The next virtual sew date is on Aug 5, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. I had a really hard time trying to figure out what you were doing. I first, I don't know what a Kwandi quilt is. So after I watched the full video, I went to research to figure out what you were doing. So you took the backing and ironed a tucked edge to the wrong side of the fabric. and then you proceeded to tuck and iron your crumbs. and you simply started at that backing edge. and top stitched all of your pieces from top to bottom of your backing. Then you turned around and repeated the process back to the top, across the entire quilt. So you're basically just top stitching the quilt to the backing? what? I don't understand, and missed I suppose; Is did you have to go back and top stitch the horizontal openings? obviously I'm going to watch it again. the quilt turned out very well. I had never heard of that technique. I'm still missing some details though.
Hello Anna! I'm delighted that you like this video. These kawandis are very addicting but so easy to do either by hand or by sewing machine. If you are interested, please come. I hope you have great week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Pretty cool, Brenda. But I’d have to start on a small project, like a table runner, to see if I have enough patience for this technique.
Hello Janet! I'm happy that you like our video! My first project was a hand sewn 12 x 16 inch table topper and it came out great. I really want to make one of these but have a coupke if questions. Would use fabric glue be a good idea? Also what about using 505 spray to adhere the flannel pieces?
Hello Wanda! I'm glad that you like our video. I didn't use glue or 505 spray or any of my kawandis but you could try it. The next virtual sew date is on May 13, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. I hope you have a carefree and fun week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
So, you kind of did a "quilt as you go"? I had to watch three times to figure out a few things: when to add flannel for batting, and how all the crumbs got stitched together. The third time, I realized that you were quilting after each round. That's a brilliant way to add strips of flannel instead of struggling with a whole piece 👍 Eventually, it occurred to me that I probably should watch your video on making this by hand, so I did, and all of my questions were answered. This machine technique was the first video I have seen from your channel. Thanks for being patient with all of us who are confused newcomers.
On a side note, I see that all of your replies to comments are cut and paste identical. Did you do that on purpose? Awaiting your response, greetings from East Texas, have a great day!

Even though I love to sew by hand I would not attempt to do Kawandi by hand but after seeing you do it on the machine I just might get it a try but I am sure I don't have enough crumbs to make one the size that you just made.

This looks like so much fun, im definitely going to try this, are all 4 edges of a scrap turned under the 1/4 inch seam allowance or just the top and left sides of a scrap? you've inspired me to try both the hand and machine quilting kawandi:)

I’m in Australia so I’ll have to figure out the time for your sew along, but thanks for the invite .. take care
What stitch length do you use?
Hello Susanne! I'm glad that you like our video! I use a longer stitch length, the same size as I would quilt with like 2.8 or 3.0. The next virtual sew date is on May 13, 2023 at 9:00 am to 5:00 pm MST. If you are interested, please come and sew with us. I hope you have a blissful week ahead. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.
Hello Brenda. Yup too cool for school is right (Holly Schmidt knows). Thank you for this. My mount scrapmore dwindled by 0.125" (or less) but I had to do this. Oh. My. You made me feel like an ARTIST! This is the best "almost no rules" project that is so relaxing and wonderful. Thank you, thank you and thank you. What's next????
Hello Sharon! I'm delighted you like this video! This method of doing a Kawandi is so addicting and there is no waste because you just fold it over and hide it in the quilt. The flannel or any batting you choose to work with goes in after the first round of scrap fabric is added to the outer edge of the quilt. You can also sew your smallest pieces together to make little crumb blocks and add these in as a piece of fabric. You are so right about it being relaxing but I love it because I have no idea what it is going to look like when I'm done. LOL! I hope you have a beautiful week ahead! Thank you for watching and your support of our little channel.
