    Excellent tips. Particularly for people like me who are new to sewing, but still bought every tool conceivable, including rotary cutter 😅😂.

    Good tips. Having had one of those nasty injuries, I’d highly recommend keeping your hand behind the blade - even if it’s parallel. Often, this pose is actually better for making stable cuts on the fabric as well, just as it’s easier to “pull” a pencil than it is to “push” it into the paper. If your fabric is squirrelly enough to really benefit from the rotary cutter, it might also benefit from temporary fabric adhesive. That stuff is just magic. I’m careful with my tools, but I still find that the blades fail from getting inadvertently damaged, rather than from wearing down the cutting edge. So, if you are buying your first rotary cutter, be prepared to buy also several blades too. They are much cheaper in bulk, and third-party blades from Amazon or eBay seem to work just as well, given their aforementioned, relatively short lifetime (compared to shears). The 45 mm blades seem to do almost everything well, but these smaller 15 mm cutters are really great for detailed work, such as in lingerie. From watching other people work, I feel that often people try to overuse the rotary cutter in a couple places. They work great on the fabrics mentioned in the video, for 95+% of the seams. But, unlike shears, they simply cannot make clean concave/inset corners (nor notches). That’s not a design defect, that’s geometry. In any case, leaving the last 1 cm or so around those critical areas, and then finishing the remainder with your shears, makes for a much cleaner result, with less overall effort. A tiny, tiny drop of veg oil between the the blade and the mating part of the handle can help the blade run a little freer, while still remaining tight and true in the holder.

    I’m a new sewist and just getting familiar with rotary cutters. Here’s a dumb question for you. Is the blade on the cutter suppose to move like a wheel, hence the name rotary cutter? Mine does not move when cutting my fabric. Maybe I need to loosen a screw to make it move but I can’t find a way to do it. I have a Martelli brand.

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  4 роки тому

      Not a dumb question, yes it is supposed to roll along like a wheel. Definitely sounds like your blade is too tight. There should be a screw, where you can loosen and change the blade. x

  • @ChristineJonah88

    I just used one for the first time last night. However, I think I had the tension too tight. It's supposed to roll, correct?

      Yes the blade rolls along the fabric. x

    I am actaully faily new at this sewing thing and was looking into getting a rotary cutter. ANd this video actaulyl helped a lot in that process. Thank you for the tips. My question is, what are some good brands for rotary cutters? So far, I have looked at Fiskars and Westcott, but I am not sure which one to get. Please help!

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  3 роки тому

      Glad it was helpful! I'm a Fiskars snob and will never leave them, the blades are superb quality and last longer than other brands I've tried. x

    Hi! I haven’t looked through all your videos yet, apologies if I’m asking a question that you’ve covered elsewhere. Do you have any tips for cutting large pieces of fabric for curtains? Is a rotary cutter the best option? Thanks 😊

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  4 роки тому +4

      I would use scissors for that, just because finding a large enough mat would be difficult for such a large area. Just measure twice and cut once! x

      ‘Rotary’ means to go around a central point. If your blade isn’t going round, check that the nut in the middle that holds the blade in place isn’t too tight 😊

    Hello! Thanks for the video. I'm attempting to make my own roller blinds and I need to cut (quite thick) cotton. I've also purchased stop fraying liquid, should I apply this before cutting or only after? Many thanks

    Thanks for this. When my blade is too dull for fabric, I have a cheap rotary cutter that I keep for dull blades for paper cutting.
    Do wish I could find a way to effectively sharpen them though, without forking out tons of money for a sharpener

      I use blunt blades for paper pattern cutting as well. I started using a ruler that has a file like edge to sharpen blades and it appears to be working but it'll never be as sharp as a brand new blade.

    • @nillybetty7599
      @nillybetty7599 3 роки тому

      It's a shame there isn't a way to sharpen these blades. It would not only be economical but also ecological.

    What size of cutting board would you recommend to start?

    • @Jessalli

      The largest you can afford and store away. They need to be kept flat, so that's something to consider when buying one. x

    I was wondering about using a rotary cutter because the whole pattern piece might not fit on the cutting mat? For example I'm making the Emerson pants and surely the leg pieces wouldn't fit? Do you only use the rotary cutter for smaller pieces ? Thank you!!!

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  4 роки тому +2

      No I actually have a much larger cutting mat for big pieces, but for trousers, I do half then carefully move the mat underneath to cut the other half. Bit tricky, but it works. x

      @Jessalli  4 роки тому +1

      My pleasure! Oh fab timing! I replace my blades every month or so, and I use mine everyday. x

    • @a1nelson
      @a1nelson 4 роки тому +4

      I agree - they for 20-ish projects. It’s been my experience that it becomes quite obvious when the blades need to be changed. The cuts will have little spots that are missed, or the bottom of two layers of fabric will not be cut as well as the top. You may start to notice that you are pressing harder than usual on the cutter, compensating for its dullness. I love my pattern weights, but they are literally made of steel, so touching them a single time often spells the end for the rotary cutter blade - at least for fine for use with difficult fabrics. I do save those bad blades for later use with tracing paper. I love my surgical scalpels (cheap, great control, longer lasting than hobby blades) for cutting out pattern pieces, but the rotary cutter is also fast and effective if the pieces are larger and less detailed.

    I have an Olfa rotary cutter but even when the blade is fairly new it nearly always skips a lot of the fabric. Not sure if I’m using it wrong or just been unlucky with blades 😩 maybe I’ll try Fiskars. I tend to use scissors though as you need a big cutting mat or keep moving your fabric for bigger pieces

    • @louiseoneil5745

      I've got Olfas, 45 and 28 and cannot master it! the 45mm skips so I have to go over it with scissors!! I watch youtube videos and marvel at folk who breeze around the pattern. I have no idea what I am doing wrong, but I live in hope!!

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Ladies, sorry to hear you've all had issues. I have had a Olfa, but I never got on with their blades. I did put a Fiskars blade in and worked much better. Maybe you're blade is on too tight? So it's not moving as freely? I must say with thick fabrics I do still get a few skipped stitches, and I only use my rotary for thin fabrics and jersey. x

    What do I do as a left handed person? According you your video, I can't use it with my left hand as the blade will be the other side.

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  4 роки тому

      You can just put the blade towards the pattern piece, so you'd be doing the same as me, just opposite sides. x

    • @rhonddalesley
      @rhonddalesley 4 роки тому +1

      Most (if not, all) rotary cutter blades can be used on either side of the cutter. Take the blade out, put it on the opposite side and reassemble with the bolt going through from the side that the blade was originally on, I hope that makes sense but if not, google will help you 😊

  • @stickypawn

    it's always so scary to me so I put it away! My biggest problem with it is the blade keeps cutting into my rulers and it cuts out pieces of very sharp metal or acrylic that scrape me (yes believe it or not, the blade is that sharp)

    • @Jessalli
      @Jessalli  3 роки тому

      You blade should run along the side of your ruler, I think you'll feel better if you buy a quilting ruler that has more of a 'side' edge to glide along. You do want a super sharp blade. Good luck!
