Hey Coach, first of all thank you for the videos and all you do. You're the best out there and I show my son your videos and we work on your drills many many times. He is a 14U player that has played on travel teams since 10U. He played with a local team last year via USSSA, but previously played on a premier league team that traveled quite a bit out of town where he was a leader on & off the field leading the team with BA & OBP and playing multiple positions including pitching 4 out 7 games in Cooperstown, where they were very successful. He is now back with that organization but last year, as stated, he played with a local team because his grandmother was hospitalized and we had to remain local and could not be be another city hours away every other weekend. With all that being said, he just finished tryouts and didn't make the A team like he has formally been on and needless to say he's a bit bummed. Concern is being on a B team that gets routed each tournament and his preparation for HS ball that starts a month before this travel season team is over. He was strong in his tryouts and several of the 7 former teammates whom he's played with since age of 4 -13U were shocked when he was selected as B team and they let him know they will miss playing without him on the A team this season. They let him know once the teams were called out. Different coaches were on the field this season and the former organization coaches he played for weren't and I left the field after watching the initial tryout and then all 26 players playing together for 3 practices thinking they picked the kids that played last season because, some are great players, but some others were selected simply because they know those players from last year spring & fall seasons, in my opinion. I want him playing to his highest potential and worry that his level could drop from being around a lesser skill set or even worse, worse attitudes and or commitment. All though at this age group it's practice/coaching that makes a difference and not so much winning/losing or who you play with as you always have the opportunity to be a leader. I've spoken to him about this thru the years and I'm hoping maybe you could help. I've recommended for him to look at this as a challenge and to do your best while knowing the rest will work out for the best no matter what that is. Adversity and having to work hard at what you love is a good thing I truly believe and if he is standout on the B or A team it's a good thing either way ultimately. And also most importantly every thing happens for a reason and it's the good Lord above that knows these reasons for us all. If you have a chance and could, would you please put a video out there that addresses this topic from your perspective that may assist him & those players out there in similar situations around this young age group, it may help a lot of folks. If you're able, please do so sir, if you already have, my apologies for having missed it. Either way, thanks again coach!
As someone who both played and coached the game, your instructions are great to teach to kids. I loved playing in the outfield, particularly CF. I have many philosophies on how to be a better OF. You should study the game, a hitter's tendencies, who's pitching for your team, the wind, your other 2 OF's positioning, etc.. stay alert and mobile, watch the ball from pitcher's release/batter's swing. Your 1st natural reaction off of contact should be 2 steps back- that gets your bearings in place Never take any steps in right away. Never get on your heels- the ball will bounce around. Adjust to situations throughout the game, pitching changes, etc.. outfield is fun to play. Being able to react quickly and having sound instincts are 2 big keys into being a good OF!
I will fully attest to your tip on focusing on the hitting zone rather than following the pitch. I saw it in another one of your vids last summer and started using it mid-season. Your eyes don't get near as strained and it's so much easier getting a read off the bat.
I am an outfielder and have trouble reading line drives. I can’t really tell if they are going to sail over my head or die early. Are there any tips/videos on how to tell if a line drive will be over your head?
1st step back (drop your shoulder) Then you will get a better read. I made the mistake. Line drive right to me so I thought I was going to catch it but I'm 5'2. The ball just out of reach
Thanks for this video. I am new to the game last year and I really struggled with fly balls. I hope to try these tips out this year and get better. Can you recommend any solo drills I can use to practice?
I never really took a firm stance, I stayed loose and ready to run, first steps are normally back but after years of playing outfield from little league to high school, you learn how to judge pitch placement, swing angles and ball trajectory off the bat to know where to go. Normally I was able to get multiple steps on the ball before the batter was done swinging.
Another tip i have is when theres a ground ball sitting in the outfield, when i usually pick that ball up i pick up its surrounding grass to give me a better grip. Idk if i explained it correctly
Coach Justin, great tips. Would like to add a few. It starts with good vision. If you have trouble reading signs from a distance, you need corrective lenses. Challenge your friends in a car ride to reading street signs to see how your vision compares. If you're the worst in the car, you shouldn't be playing outfield. Second, you need different color sunglass lenses for the different weather conditions. In your video, that gray sky is difficult for picking up the ball. I have brown polarized lenses that make the ball pop for me on a gray day. Everyone is different, polarized lenses aren't for everyone. Third, first step based on first read, only left or right for alignment with the ball. First step is never in or back (unless the sound tells you to just turn and run to the wall). Second step on second read is now in or out. So many guys first steps are straight forward on crack of bat, now they have to stop and recover to move in another direction. I'd rather they not move at all than move forward. After a few steps you should be getting help from the other outfielders telling you to adjust further in or back on the ball. You should do the same for them. You make each other better. Finally, I like the ring finger and pinky together in that last finger slot in the glove for a strong closure.
in my last game i struggled weather if the ball was if front of me or behind me. im using the brim of the hat tip for my next game. thanks for the video
One thing I struggle with a little is fielding a ground ball hit to the outfield, and coming up throwing while trying to hit my target accurately or trying to throw some one out. Do you have any advice to make those kind of throws perfect or somewhat perfect coach? I’m playing high school ball btw
Hey I have a question. Every time i do bp my thumb is always bleeding because I put so much pressure on my top hand when it turns and it rubs against my lower hand/thumb while holding the bat.Any tips to stop this? Btw great vid
Thanks for the video i played a few years when i was 10 to 13 and havent played again until 20 last year i play outfield with a closed web 12 half inch glove. And been having trouble reading pop flies. I did play 3rd base for a few games and made some awesome plays there but the Problem is that everyone wants 3rd
Piggybacking on the watch the hitting zone tip. Knowing the count, score and baserunners will also narrow down where and what pitches will be thrown, add in where the catcher set up and the size and handedness of the batter and you should narrow down where the ball is going to be hit if at all.
FaZe Temp0 what ever position you feel most comfortable. Also really depends on how your built/what size you are. if your a bigger guy and have an arm maybe third . If you have a good speed and your consistent with fly balls maybe outfield
I’m 63 years old, I played ball for 20 years and I only played 3rd, short and 1st because I could never judge a fly ball in the outfield with any confidence. If I had known the tip of the brim trick that would have been such a great help! Great tip!
Wear your hat at a lower angle you should not be able to see your own eyes in the mirror if there is a fly ball you will have to look up, also switch lens colors it won't block the light.
i’ve been playing summer league i see some balls but like i lose some i think it just happens we haven’t had practice so it sucks when i’m put out there and can’t see it
I'm 13yrs old and I'm in softball fair Park preparatory academy and my game is Monday 9/18/2023 7th grade my name is Anya Ellis thank you for the advice
I was taught to jump into stance for every pitch. Thought it was a waste of time and energy. Do animals in the kingdom jump, or do they get low and ready to run in any direction. Lol
Jesus Christ died for all of our sins. He died the death we all deserved. He was the perfect one who never sinned once, but he loved us so much he decided to die for us so our sins would be paid for and we can enter the Kingdom of Heaven before God the Father blamelessly. I got tryouts today I’m super nervous
I play softball, are there any things that I should do differently for these?
Shohei Ohtani Should watch the Outfielding Videos
The Outfield is a place where runs are scored most in a game and as Outfielders its our job to prevent those runs from scoring.
Exactly! That's a great point!
No shit

I know this is obvious but I needed to hear it, it gets me all hyped up.
Last tryout, I had problems catching flyballs, This year i'm gonna catch every one of them!!

Man this is my problem, I’m really bad at reading line drives and I missed one bad today at practice and I think my coaches think bad of me now
I think it's important to pick up the spin of the ball (backspin vs topspin) but that is especially hard with line drives, i get it.
Man, your channel is a god send. You’re helping me out dramatically with coaching my youth softball team.

Try a box grip, it will have you pull the ball more but it's less of a turn and more a flick.
