The Tubes were INSANE. Fee Waybill was INSANE. I saw them live in 1982-3-4ish and it was the most entertaining concert I'd ever been to. Just wild. Lots of costumes and antics. LOVED it. The Plimsouls opened and I loved them too.
**It's been six months, She hasn't shut up once, I've tried to explain, She's driving me insane** Oh god I used to love the Tubes!!!! They'd play the clubs around RI before they hit it big. Very cool band with a very unique sound. Check out "She's a Beauty" ua-cam.com/video/mQ_k_VG6Syc/v-deo.html Awesome song with a little harder edge. Peace
Fee Waybill had an edge of hysteria in his voice which is very hard to reproduce, yet he did it well into his 60's. Nobody sounded like that then, nor today. Roger Steen was no slouch. They were so good live. It was a freak show of the very highest order. I came home so buzzed it took me years to come down.
If you dive into they're whole discography you'll discover that they fit in nowhere and everywhere. Musicaly they have done the whole Spectra from punk, disco, R&B, Rock, jazz...
Anybody lucky enough to see the Tubes live in their heyday will never forget it. To say the Tubes are different is an understatement. Extravagant, theatrical, weird and wonderful. They put on on a hell of a show. There's no group like them.
One of my Top 3 bands of all time. They have been playing together since the 70s. Live they are absolutely incredible. White Punks on Dope, The Mokey Time, Don't Touch me there, Tip of my Tongue, and She's a Beauty. The drummer is great. His name is Prairie Prince.
Can you please play a 70’s hit please, by The Little River Band, Cool Change. I’ve requested this a lot but it’s because I know you’re going to like it.
@@gypsyrocker I’m trying to get other people to request it in the comments because I’ve seriously requested it no less than 50 times and I’ve gotten no where so maybe you could request? Please
They morphed into this band in the '80s, but they did their best stuff in the '70s. They released their first album in '75, with probably their signature song, White Punks on Dope. Everybody loved it, but kids didn't know they were making fun of the life. I still have What Do You Want From Live, which I bought in 1978 when it was released. It has my all time favorite Tubes song, What Do You Want From Life. If you get to see a video of them in '77, you'll trip out. They were in a phase where Fee Waybill hilariously rewrote the book on glam rock.
“TV is King” is another gem from these guys. They put on an awesome show - I saw them twice in the 80s. “White Punks On Dope” should be seen in concert, or you’ll miss out on Fee’s alter ego, Quay Lewd.
There are a number of live performances of "White Punks On Dope" from the 70's here on UA-cam, all done really well. Here's an example: ua-cam.com/video/J4KSux1OEkk/v-deo.html I only saw the Tubes live once in the 70's, and it was a show to remember!
The first Tubes song I ever heard was "What do you want from life." It was a crazy song to say the least. By the way, The Tubes were awesome in concert. Great show.
The Tubes, was a punk rock band that was banned in 40 countries for their life stage show. They later broke into main stream rock hair band with the song and video " She's A Beauty"
This album, "The Completion Backwards Principle" and the next, "Inside Outside" were my two big ones. They got played a ton by me. The guitar licks were of course done by the amazing Steven Lukather of Toto. Amber should know that name as he is the guitarist on MJ's Thriller also.
The Completion Backward Principle is a great concept album end to end. Brilliant if quirky. Amnesia and Matter of Pride, not to mention Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman (great pulp Sci fi reference)
Be careful diving into The Tubes. They have a "colorful" history that landed them in the pages of Penthouse magazine. "She's a Beauty" is another good song, but you can probably do without "White Punks on Dope." Great times in old San Rafael!
I got to see them live when they co-opened Bowie's concert in the early 80's. I didn't know they were part of the line-up so it was a real treat. They're an amazing live band. No auto-tune or pre-recorded music there. Very entertaining band.
Some of the guys in The Tubes are from Phoenix, AZ, and their sound is hard to define. Their sound is part pop, part rock, part synth-pop, part artsy, part new wave and a dash of punk. They are 80s Music…. and definitely OUT THERE, tongue in cheek, and fun. Side note: in the movie Xanadu with Olivia Newton John, they have a fun little music/dance sequence. (Amber, you and the girls will love the movie Xanadu!)
I saw The Tubes in Detroit in 1975 and 1976. They were a very theatrical group and put on a show with numerous props and costumes. In 1975, when fat-back televisions were about all you could get, they filled the stage with a backdrop of fat-back tv screeens. There was a lot going on onstage, plus a lot more on those screens. This was a video made during the 1980s when they were pretty popular in that market. Peace.
Another artist suggestion from around 1982 was Adam Ant, "Goody Two Shoes", "Stand and Deliver", "Strip" or "Antmusic". Also Falco "Rock me Amadeus". I think y'all would get a kick out of these.
The tubes had a couple tunes that got airplay. This tune and She's a Beauty. Here's another 2 song band "the sherbs". We Ride Tonight and No Turning Back.
You missed the intro on the album version....."As I mentioned at the close of the last record, this record you are now playing is another example of the completion backwards principle. If you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides in one meeting." Good memories....thank you!!!!!
Reaction suggestion: Billy Squier. Really BIG in the 80s (rock). You guys will love him. Songs: The Stroke, The Big Beat, Rock Me Tonight, My Kinda Lover, Lonely Is The Night, Everybody Wants You...more
I think most people considered them New Wave back in the day. Usually New Wave broke into three types, with lots of crossover: moody emo New Wave like Modern English or Human League, ska-like New Wave (with horns and such) like Oingo Boingo and Madness, and the more like the post-punk groups like Blondie, Adam Ant, the Pretenders, Talking Heads etc. (and even the re-invented thin-white-duke David Bowie) -- that had more rock guitar and a little less synth but made you want to jump around dancing. :-)
I loved playing this entire album in high school. The Tubes had a very "tongue in cheek" style. They were able to be silly, serious, and thoughtful all at once. They used to put on an amazing live show, too. It got so extravagant they had to tone it down because it cost too much.
Have you guys checked out Devo yet? And their biggest hit "whip it" . Another '80s classic would be Adam Ant and a good song by him to check out would be "goody two shoes"
New Artist Suggestion: Todd Rundgren “Hello It’s Me” and America “Ventura Highway”. Both 70’s hits, there’s brass sections, acoustic guitars , and harmonies involved…so you’ll both like these songs.
I got to see them in a small bar outside Denver in the early 90s - they put on one of the best shows ever! They were so unique when they burst onto the radio. They're still out there - my brother has tix for March.
"The Tubes", 1 of the greatest "bang for your buck" concerts you could attend in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Not only great talented musicians performing flawlessly but entertaining shenanigans onstage evoking amusement, laughter with great visuals throughout the show. It was like a "rock and roll carnival" with the totally unexpected being revealed before during and after every song making for just a fantastic night out.
"And hey, Rock 'n' Roll, they're gonna cram it down your throat. Time for the number One group of the world. Please welcome, from San Francisco, THE TUBES!" God, this takes me back. I've seen so many of their shows from the 70's and onwards. Although I gotta say, the early work from the 1970's was much more outrageous and rebellious en less smoothly produced and with more of a satirical twist. This song was all over FM radio in the SF Bay Area (the Tubes were from Frisco)... Cool facts: The guitar riff for "Talk To Ya Later" was created by Steve Lukather (Toto) and he played the guitars and solo on the studio recording... Her also created the solo in "She's A Beauty" . The Tubes were a CrAZy live... and Fee was a fantastic singer...
Good choise, wonderfull group, they have don a lot of good hits, in my eyes a very under rated band. very good reaction as alwayes, keep up the good work
This was a fun song. "She's a Beauty" was another big hit for them.
She's a Beauty .. was one of the first videos on MTV that got a viewer warning tag... because of the suggestiveness of the S&M aspects :P
That was actually their only "big" hit, at least in the US.
I love that one. Such a funky unusual sound.

That’s the character Fee Wavbil portrays when he sings the song White Punks On Dope
Steve Lukather needs a shout for writing the riff, the chord structure, and that guitar solo.
He also played bass on the track as the Tubes regular bassist was NOT on board with the more commercial direction they were taking.

"She's a Beauty" is another great tune from The Tubes

Cool facts: The guitar riff for "Talk To Ya Later" was created by Steve Lukather (Toto) and he played the guitars and solo on the studio recording... Her also created the solo in "She's A Beauty" . The Tubes were a CrAZy live... and Fee was a fantastic singer...
