    Laowa no doubt has fantastic value across all of their lenses. I just wish they had a slightly more expensive option that communicated exif data to the cameras. I personally don't care if the camera controls the Laowa lenses focus or aperture, but being able to get the data attached to the photos would be great. I use their 65mm macro and if I don't write down the aperture for images X to Y than I can have a hard time remembering later.

    Nikon has long ways to go in TS category, charging $3.4k will only push new breed of TS shooters to other brands.

      Sadly most of their lenses are priced more than other brands; hence why I go for 3rd party manufacturers now (Tamron and Sigma).

    Tilt in an UWA is actually very useful in landscape photography too, and generally for putting the plane of focus exactly where you'd want it. It makes a difference also when photographign buildings from other angles then straight from the front. Tilt becomes even more important when focusing close-up, not necessarily for product photography. :)
    Very nice comparison, however, and as always, great review! Thank you for that, nice to see!
    BTW, these specialist lenses is one of the reasons that when I went for a dslr in 2005, I actually chose Canon. No regrets whatsoever. I owned all of the older Canon ones, and loved them, and these days I own the two shortest L ones, and the longest :). Just love them. The TS-E 17L, when I got it, was by far the sharpest lens I had ever seen.
    Kindest regards, Wim

      I can already tell you from experience the Samyang is _nowhere_ close to the Canons. It's a big shame because many of Samyang's other manual primes match or exceed Canon's equivalents, but the TS 24mm is miles behind.

    Tilt function is just as important on a UWA as on the normals and tele’s, IMO. If you want larger DOF without stopping all the way down, or want just one side of a building in focus, you need tilt/swing.

    Canon tho has old TS-E versions, which are still good and updated L versions with Macro from 17mm to 135mm. If you're in tilt-shift game, Canon is a winner hands down.

    I have the Laowa 2:1 and 2.5:5 and are really solidly built and quite nice to use. The only "complaint" I have is that because they don't transmit any info to my R5, I have to depend on focus peaking (which can be hard to do depending on using blue, red, or yellow peaking color). Oh, and I have to add that these Laowa lenses come in native RF; so no adapter necessary like for my Canon MP-E65. Forgot that I also have the Laowa "probe" lens; lots of fun to use too! Well made lenses through and through!

  •  3 роки тому +1

    Laowa and their blue corners ... it breaks my heart. just like the 12mm and 15mm. They make such great lenses but the blue colorscast in the edges seems to be something typical ... i love laowa but i wish they would fix it

  • @anthonywarry
    @anthonywarry Місяць тому

    So you'd say the Laowa is the winner when you consider the minor differences and the big price difference? Contrast can be added I guess. It's hard to buy a third party lens apart from Sigma but it's harder to fork out the cash for the Nikon 19mm!
    Thanks for the review!

      Of course there's a reason, if you're a Nikon user.

    • @sebastianmatthews1663
      @sebastianmatthews1663 3 роки тому +3

      @@Barefoot_Joe For the cost of the Nikon lens alone you could buy the Canon + a used 5DS R. That way even if you _only_ used the Canon for the one tilt-shift lens and never touched any other Canon gear at all, you'd still be getting better performance at a higher resolution than any Nikon camera and you won't have spent more than if you'd bought just the inferior Nikon lens. And that's if you absolutely need the tilt function, which as Christopher points out, actually isn't very useful with these super-wide lenses and is really only used with tele tilt-shifts.
      The idea that someone is "a Nikon user" or "a Canon user", or any other single-manufacturer user, is not relevant when you're talking about this level of product. For casual shooters and enthusiasts on a budget who are never spending this kind of money and never getting into this sort of specialised equipment, sure, stick to one system. But if you're in the sort of position where you're seriously contemplating dropping over three grand on a single special-use lens, you don't limit your options and waste money just for the sake of maintaining some arbitrary brand loyalty. These lenses are for particular specialist working professionals; you don't get into tilt-shift work to be a brand fanboy.

      @@sebastianmatthews1663 Buying a body and a lens for just one use case is only an option if you never leave your studio, or never have to walk long distances (landscape photography) to get your image. The moment I have to walk up a hill, I will not buy a camera body and a lens that is not compatible with all my other gear. Takes up a lot of space in my backpack to only be a one trick pony. I am better off buying the native lens, that only takes up 1 slot in my backpack (consider also the additional weight) and be done with it.
      Has nothing to do with fanboyism.
      Edit: also the image quality differences are so small between the lenses, you will not see it in any real world architecture or landscape photography.

    You missed something very affordable with a quality that fashion photographers use it. I talk about the "Lensbaby" lenses. Their shift mechanism consists of a spherical joint with freedom of movement in all directions and a ring for fastening. The range of tilt and shift angles is the widest, achievable without bellows! price range is ~ 100 to a few hundred $. They have wide angle lenses. But they also offer 50mm and light telephoto lenses.

    talk about 'no bias' when a company 'asks' for a video.
