  • In this exclusive video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell and staff writer Drew Mahowald use Trackman 4 technology to test the brand new Mizuno MP-20 HMB irons. The MP-20 HMBs are a players distance iron offering from Mizuno, which is a unique addition to the MP line. They were created to provide faster ball speeds and improved forgiveness on mis-hits to golfers who still want a traditional iron shape and soft, forged feel. The Mizuno MP-20 HMB irons are available for pre-order beginning Sept. 5 and more information about the irons will be available at www.2ndswing.c... on that date.

    Great content, very interesting! I wish I could crush it like Thomas, awesome powerful swing.
    Two tiny things: you’re discussing Thomas‘ stock carry distances and comparing them to the clubs you’re testing, but how do the lofts compare? Crucial information.
    Secondly, coming from a sound engineer: please try and use a compressor and normalization to get the overall audio level to 0 dB. It’s way too quiet. Thomas‘ mic is much louder, as well. Thanks and hopefully, this is considered constructive criticism!

      Thanks for the feedback Jakob. We appreciate it. We definitely need to do better with making sure the videos we're doing properly detail what's going on with loft, especially with so many of the new players distance irons having stronger lofts. And we also appreciate your advice on sound. We're working on creating a new studio for videos that should help once we get it built out. Thanks again!

      Hi Jakob. Thank you for the feedback. I agree it is important for me to explain the loft of my current clubs to compare. My current 4 iron is the Callaway X-Forged 18 with a loft of 23*, MP-20 HMB 4 iron loft is 22*. The HMB is 1* stronger yet carrying 15 yards further. My 7 iron is the Callaway Apex MB 18 with 34* of loft compared to the MP-20 HMB 7 iron loft of 32*. HMB 7 iron is 2* stronger yet carrying 13 yards further. Typically every 1* of loft is 3 yards, so you can see the HMB's do gain some distance!

    1.44 smash from a 7i, even if it's 32* is pretty crazy. However...If we juice up our long and mid irons... we still end up with a huge gape between one of our wedges. When I gamed 790's I had a massive gape between my PW and my bladed GW. I'd probably be forced to game the set GW just to gap correctly, then play wider gaps with the SW and LW.

    this new category of iron is great imo, thanks apex forged and p790

      No doubt. There's a reason why every manufacturer now has at least one entry in the players distance category; they're just irons that are going to appeal to and work for a lot of golfers. Now, as The Griff, mentioned, they're not for everybody, as long hitters and high-speed players run the risk of gapping issues. But overall, like you said, a great category for the game.

    I just got the HMB set and they will only be leaving the head covers as long as it takes me to swing

    You didn’t really say who these are for, can a mid/high handicapper play these irons? That’s pretty important.

    Just found your channel. Liked this video and scrolled through your library. Looks like you’ve never reviewed Wilson Staff irons?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  5 років тому +1

      Sean, we do need to get Wilson worked into the mix. We've been wanting to do something with the Staff Model Blades for a while but just haven't gotten to it, and we're hoping to see some new options released by them early next year. But they make very good irons and that's a glaring omission from our channel that we'll try to rectify. Thanks.

    I’m currently using a 919HM for my 4/5 iron and 919 Forged for 6-PW. I have a U500 3IRN that I really enjoy using. I’m just in the beginning stages of playing, roughly a 13 handicap. I really like my forged irons and my U500 but do not like the Hotmetals at all. I feel more comfortable using a 3IRN than I do my HM 5 IRN. I’m looking to swap my 4 + 5 but can’t decide between the HMB or just going forged. Which would you consider to be closer to the U500? I have no idea why I have such a difficult time with the hotmetals but for whatever reason I cannot get any sort of comfort level using them.

    How many wedges do you have to carry in the bag when you hit your 7 iron 191 carry?

    • @thomascampbellgolf
      @thomascampbellgolf 5 років тому +1

      Hi Thanks for your comment. What I would reassess is the loft on my 7iron, and consider a combo set with the MP20 MMC and Blade options. I typically carry my 7iron 178 and that is all I want. We want a 10-15 yard gap between each club. This video shows how the HMB will help those players looking for distance and height, but for those players that already hit it plenty high and far the other two MP20 ions will be a better option.

    Hi from the USA. Can you do a comparison of the following clubs?
    Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 vs Mizuno MP20 HMB vs Cleveland Launcher UHX irons vs. Titleiest T200?
    Thank you

    Do the HMB irons feel a lot softer than the P790 irons?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  5 років тому +1

      There's a definite difference in the feel of those two irons. HMB has a more traditional forged feel when compared to P790, which is powerful but still offers that noticeable click at impact. If a softer feel were the biggest factor in choosing between the two, HMB would probably win out for most. Thanks.

    Hi, has anyone seen or does anyone think that a mid or even high handicapper could use these or are these exclusively a single figure handicap club? Interested in what the market for these actually is, how would these compare to the JPX 919 Forged - seen these are the same lofts?

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  4 роки тому

      Hi Christopher. A mid-handicapper could certainly use the MP-20 HMBs, and high-handicappers could depending on the strengths/weaknesses of their game -- a high-handicap golfer that hits his/her irons like a mid-handicapper or better can still use the MP-20 HMBs. Both the MP-20 HMB and the JPX-919 Forged fall into that players-distance category. The major difference is that the MP-20 HMB is a hollow body design whereas the JPX-919 has more of that cavity back look.

    Results would be terrible, if you took gapping seriously. 50 yards gap between PW and 7, so you have to cover a 50 yard gap with just your 8 and 9 iron

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  5 років тому

      You make a great point. Gapping is extremely important and anyone who wanted to play these irons would want to get fit to make sure they got the lofts and in turn the gapping correct. It's why we encourage everyone to get fit, especially in a situation where an iron was built for distance. Thanks.

    • @thomascampbellgolf
      @thomascampbellgolf 5 років тому +1

      Hi Thanks for your comment. This is why it is very important to come in and get fit. With the MP20 Irons with my speed the HMB 7iron carrying 190 yards is to far. I typically carry my 7iron 178 and don't want to carry my 7iron more than 180. The MP20 MMC or Blade would be a great option to create a combo set. Typically you would want a 10-15 yard gap between each club. If I would play all HMB and with my PW carry 142, and 7iron carry 190 to make this set work my 9iron would need to be 158 carry and 8 iron 174 carry. This would be 16 yards apart.

    Mizuno makes great irons but their marketing is poor . Every single review talks about how you can get fitted and put a combo set together . Then u go and get fitted and they only have a 7 iron . So you pay to get fitted for a 7 iron and then hope and pray that the PW suits your eye and that the 5 i is as you wished . Terrible . In Germany there is not one mizuno fitter who has a full set . So cheap from mizuno

      Thanks for your comment. Luckily in our stores we are able to show our customers the combo clubs as we usually have them in stock whether new or used. However you bring up a great point and it's the same with every manufacturer we only get the 7 iron to fit with. - Thomas
