I went with 3-9 in The HMB and then straight into my Jaws wedges. Great setup and the HMB’s are great looking and performing
Thanks!
Thank you for your support 👍
I switched from Bridgestone J40 irons to the Mizuno HMBs. Both have Project X 5.5 shafts. Love the feel right out of the box. The Bridgestones were my favorites for over 7 years and still love the feel. The HMBs are a bit longer. Haven't used the HMBs for that long (just since Oct 2020) but I think they are going to replace my J40s as my #1 set.
Good video and honest feedback as always. Any chance you could do a video comparing the JPX919 Forged, MP20 HMB and JPX Hot Metal Pro as they seem to cover the same target audience. Cheers
Love the mizuno clubs. Seem very consistent and forgiving.
Nah
Oh yeah
I find the HMB more attractive. Also, while you give up a little distance, you get 562 average more spin, and better descent angle which together should mean better stopping power going into the green. Plus you can blend the HMB with other Mizuno irons. Seems a win for Mizuno to me.
I really enjoy your comparison videos. Some of the best available
Just the review I was waiting for, thanks Michael. Loft for loft they seem very similar for distance. Guess it will come down to personal preferences and budget.
Mike You are all over it as always......most timely comparisons and reviews out there...Nice work..
Would love to see a comparison video between HMB & 919 Forged. Currently playing the forged, having come from P790. Considering a HMB\MMC combo.
i play the 919 forged would i be better of with the hmb ??
maybe also the hm pro, with the 919f and hmb
What did you not like with the p790 versus the Forged irons? P790 controllable in the short irons? Fliers? Thanks
Hi Mike, I realise you cannot please everybody but I would have loved to see the Ping i500 included as a similar style. Tony
I agree, I like both the Ping i500 and the Mizuno HMB and I need help too.
The ability to easily blend the HMB with the MB is a no brainer.
What do you mean, blend?
Combo set?
Stephen Watson you can combo the hmb with any of the other of the two irons in the MP line (blade or mmc). The lofts are rhe same and profiles are very similar.
I have both sets 3-AW. Though the Taylormade offers a slightly longer distance (175-7i), the Mizuno disperses less with a slight loss in distance (168-7i). I am a 7 handicapper, 60 year old. Thanks for the review.
Which set would you say is more forgiving ?
You didn’t mention feel. Which club felt better?
I have the new P790's 5-AW. Very impressed with the look and feel. I will stress you need to get custom fit for the proper shaft to ensure proper landing angles. Happy Lefty golfer with P790
Peter Rodriguez i just ordered my p790’s in left hand as well!
So keen to give them a go!
They felt unreal when I was getting fitted up
Front to back dispersion better with the HMB. Notice there was a low strike with each club: both had the same ball speed of about 120 mph and flew the same distance. When you consider the Mizzy managed that with 1.5 degrees weaker loft, that’s impressive. Add to that the fact they look better (IMHO) and can be blended with MMC or MB, then it’s quite a solid win to Mizuno
Just went in and tried the HMB, MMC, and new P790 today. Really wanted to walk out with the HMB since I love the looks. The HMBs just didn’t work for me. MMC felt much more solid and dispersion was much better. But the P790s came out the clear winner for my swing. Dispersion was great..swing speed was higher by about 4mph on avg. and just felt much more solid at impact and much more forgiving distance wise. I have always played Mizunos. Still play an old set of MX-20s. Didn’t want to like the P790s. Planned on buying a set of HMBs with Modus 105s. Walked out the fitting with P790s on NSPro 950s.
Funny similar too me. Love the feel of the MMC. I wanted HMB but ended up with MMC. The MMC are gorgeous in person. 790 was too strong for me. Messed up my higher loft gapping.
Update. 1 month with my new P790s. Seriously considering putting them up for sale. On course performance was much different than indoor launch monitor testing. Was not getting any added distance compared to my old Mizuno MX-20s. (Doubled up the clubs one day and hitting balls with both sets). I think it might be more the shaft than the club head (jumping from R400 to NSPro 950 S), but just couldn’t get consistency out on the course...feel was just really off. Main takeaway FOR ME is indoor mat testing is very different than on course performance. Just not getting along with these P790s.
@@louhsin Maybe look into slight swing adjustment? The P790 are excellent clubs.
Louis, I’ll take those off your hands so you won’t have to hit them ever again😬
played them all together yesterday , with my mizuno mp , hit 100 balls blades mmc hmb , in looks i wanted the blades but if you dont hit right in the middle of the club face you get more drop off then the over two hmb has more hight then mmc and feels so much better , so for me swinging 95 mph on a 7 iron, its blades up to 8 iron then 7 to 4 in hmb mix set perfect ,
I hit all the new Mizuno MP offerings yesterday (MP20 blade, MMC and HMB) all in the 7 iron with the same shaft in my current Hot Metal Pros the 120gram S300 Dynamic Gold - I also had my Hot Metal Pro 7 iron (which I've weakened to 32 degrees from the stock 30 degrees) as a test club. When you have all 4 of these clubs together, (MP20 blade, MP20 MMC, MP20 HMB and 919 Hot Metal Pro), the one thing that stands out more than anything is the offset of the new HMB and it is the thing my eyes couldn't get over visually - god do I wish Mizuno reads this and introduces an HMB Pro set asap that has reduced offsets - similar to the Hot Metal Pro. For this reason alone, I could not buy it - and I went there to order an HMB 22 degree 4 iron to replace my Hot Metal Pro 5 iron because of the thinner profile front to rear. All the new MP20 line is great. I loved the blades - was hitting the 7 iron consistently 172 - but after all the hitting, if I had to buy a set, I would choose the MMC - they really surprised me how easy they were to repeatedly hit it far, high and consistent. The new Mizunos are all winners but that offset is a crime in my opinion.
I love offset. Can't make everyone happy.
Mp20 offset .087" hot metal pro .112" mmc .122" hmb .126", mmc and hmb basically identical in offset
@@jamieellis2297 go look at the clubs together - you will understand
I've hit all of them and have placed an order of hmb 4-6 and blade 7-p, I didn't see any offset difference between hmb and mmc...and the specs back me up.
You said I hope Mizuno reads this and makes a pro model the same offset to the mmc, well it already is
MP 20HMB VS JPX Forged comparison please
Congrats for the video, very good comparison. But which one has more forgiveness hitting with long irons?
Again for irons it’s about consistent distance control. You want to be able to take a club you if you nut it it will fly a max number and not get a 110% shot that throws you over the back and in trouble.
You have a very nice swing
Cut the spin of the HMB with a better fitted shaft, and you get equal distance. It's just what fits you. The TM is nice but I did like the feel of the HMB - solid yet soft, less ear-piercing sound than the P790
Great review, fair comparison!
It would be nice if you could bend the hmb to loft of 30.5 to see if they have similar numbers
They definitely would, extra spin over extra 3-5 yards any day though
how would you compare the Haywood Signature to the HMB's as far as look and forgiveness?
Just bought the HMB’s tested the p790 prior
I hit them both myself but went with the p790, smaller dispersion for me with the TM. They both look and feel great though.
@@chriscus1474 Which set would you say is more forgiving ?
@@BuffaloBarber24 P790 were more forgiving than mizuno. But that was in 2019 you may want to try the new ones. It may have changed but I kind of doubt it.
@@chriscus1474 thanks. Would you rather order a set of p790 in 4-Aw or 3-ow?
@@BuffaloBarber24 I went 4- AW but that's because I love my 3 hybrid. Best advice I could give is to get fitted. And hopefully you get a good fitter cause the p790s might not be the best club for you.
Michael, I would love to see the MP-18 MMC vs the MP-20 MMC...very interested to see if they are basicly producing the same numbers.
jballoregon I would love to see this!
Second this!
I think the mp20 Mmc is better looking but you could probably blind test them through 1000 balls and not see any difference
Michael the cost of both is the most relevant issue. I am sure both clubs can achieve what the press clippings afford (pardon the pune). The cost of both of these irons would really be the central topic going forward and when does it stop?
Great video! Tried both of them the other day and was a bit disappointed. The try to look like blades but the feel is way off. No mather where you strike it on the face it almost feels the same. The spin is also a bit to low for me. And a 7 iron (P790) with 30.5 in loft is just to fool people.
Comparing irons with different lofts just doesn't make a lot of sense to me, so the one thing I would like to hear about is the feel of each club. Maybe more commentary on feel and playability as opposed to numbers is more relevant in this situation?
Just tried both of these sets out last week, assuming that I'd be buying the MP-20 HMB. Interestingly, I ended up settling with the new Titleist T200's which I preferred to both. The dispersion of the TaylorMade P790 was OK left to right but not so good distance wise. The feel of the MP-20 was much better and there was less 'crack' on impact against the TM but I was quite staggered by the feel of the T200's. The lofts were a bit strong for me but descent angle will hopefully be sufficient to get the ball stopping quickly. Distance is less important (to me) than consistency and stopping control.
David Stephen I had the same experience but I made the opposite call. All my best golf has been played with irons so there's a confidence angle to it. They're also FAR prettier. However if you blindly looked at the Trackman numbers you'd say buy the T200. I've never been more impressed with a Titleist iron; I usually don't get along with them at all. Good luck with them!
Interesting - I’m playing Mizuno JPX 900 HM at the minute and feel it’s time to move to a more compact head, so I tested the T200’s and was mightily impressed. Started digging about and have been drawn to the HMB’s. Haven’t hit them yet but hope to do a back to back comparison. How’s the T200’s working out?
Any chance you can review the PXG 0211 irons?
Recently moved from Ap2s over to the p790. Really enjoying them so far. I’ve really been enjoying the feel. Curious to how they feel for you?
great video mike, hmb for me all day. i tried the p790. they were ok but didn't feel that great.
Andy Wood ... OK 🤔
Hi from the USA. Can you do a comparison of the following clubs?
Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 vs Mizuno MP20 HMB vs Cleveland Launcher UHX irons vs. Titleiest T200?
Thank you
I got both mp20 hmb and mmc, comparing it to Taylormade p760 I must say 760 is so great, much better feeling than mizuno. Even tho I tried to love mizuno the 760 are just wow
Mike, which iron felt better/softer, or same?
Not sure if it’s just me but I find the P790 heavier compared to other irons I’ve had in my hands. They all had R flex shafts although they were a variety of brands.
I love the MP20, but don’t let that influence you next week Mike 😉
Haha
im really torn between the MP20 HMB and JPX 919...Im a 10 handicap and will work longer irons...I do have mis-hits where I will thin the ball ...my regular ball fades...any thoughts?
HMB, Its going to sell well based on reviews and looks fantastic. Either would be welcome in my bag.
Could just get the HMB custom and get them strong a degree to match the other brands.
I'd go mizuno all the way the yardage control is better on them irons
HMB's are wayyyyy more bendable if you need to adjust the lie angles.
Would be great to see comp between hmb and hmpro.
Which one feels better
How about feeling?
Hi michael what shaft are u using on mizuno
I tried the P790 but they just went too far for me. I was carrying the 7 iron 180 yards which would mean a PW of 150 yards. I would have needed about 6 wedges. I also tried the JPX 919 forged. Lovely club but I ended up with the Cobra King forged Tec black irons. Loved the looks, the feel and the distances were perfect for me. But if you do not carry the ball a long way I would say try out the P790, the ball comes off the club like a rocket..
Wow, very interesting. I know everyone and their swing is different, but i tried the P790 & the Cobra King Forged Tec yesterday and ended up having the same problem with both. The Cobra was more consistent, but just as excessive in the distance - a behemoth. Reminded me of problems i had in my early days with Cleveland CG16s... Then tried the MP20 HMBs and wow, now that's consistency, sure averaged 8 yards shorter, but higher launch and spin (1300avg higher), less dispersion, - order placed! Upgrade from 2014 Taylor Made TP CB.
I got p790 because i have an slower swing speed(90mph), prefect fit for me and it did pick up 15 to 20m further then my old set of irons and my handicap drop 3 points in 5 months
Can do a review with mizuno mp 20 mmc vs taylormade p760 please
What are the small white dots that I've been placed on the face of the clubs for?
The dots are put on the head so that the ball tracking equipment can pick up the ball/club data. Without them there is no data.
Allows launch monitor to see the clubhead to measure head delivery, speed, strike etc.
@@MichaelNewtonGolf I thought so, but I had never noticed before on other videos
Anyone who knows their stuff will buy Mizuno, whereas anyone who falls for marketing bluster and wants to say "I hit my 7 iron further than you" will buy TM.
You need to give most golfers more credit than that. If I play a more traditional lofted iron I will hit a club more than I would if I played a stronger lofted iron. You are too caught up on the number on the bottom of the club.
@@jporter504 that's exactly the opposite of the point I was making 🤣. People who know the game know the number on the bottom used to mean more than it does now, whereas the gullible types buy TM irons because they "go further" but only due to them being delofted.
I quite liked what the previous incarnation of Hogan did with their irons by only stamping the lofts on the sole rather than an arbitrary number.
@@3DGvisuals I understand what you are saying but I want to add that the newer game improvement clubs are easier to hit higher and are more forgiving than more traditional clubs, thus they can be stronger lofted without increasing the difficulty of use. For example, my 4 iron is 20.5 degrees. If it were a blade or cb iron I would not even think about using it. However, it is extremely forgiving. So much so, that I purchased a 3 iron which is lofted at 18 degrees and I hit well. That is like an old 1 iron. On windy days, the 3 replaces the hybrid.
@@jporter504 I know that, but these are two competing GI clubs where the primary difference is the loft
@@3DGvisuals couldn't disagree more. I hit 4 different sets before I got the TM. They were just more accurate for me and my swing. Had absolutely nothing to do with more distance which was literally 4 yards distance between the two. And you give the average golfer very little credit. I think most (and this is my opinion) would prefer accuracy and forgiveness over distance. And yes I know I'm late to the party
I tend to add a lot of dynamic loft so would Mmc be better for me than Hmb
I would say so..... you’ve always got the option of going upto 2 degrees stronger on the lofts through custom build to help with loft delivery.
Just realized that British say HAYTCH instead of AYTCH for the letter H
It depends on what part of the country you are from..
I've been waiting on this comment. 😂. . . It's all respect over the pond here with me. But still tickles me.
Hmb vs 919 forged please
The HMB is all Chromoly forged face and neck. The 919 and 921F are 1025E steel in 8-PW; Chromoly in 4-7i. I found the 921F has less spin. I like some spin in my irons - lots of carry with little roll and tight dispersion. The HMB gave me that in the fitting.
HMB on looks alone.
Nope
Yep
@@brianforrester9670 Yep :)
I have tested the two clubs and taylormade went way too far compared to the mizuno clubs. The sales person did not mention anything about the clubs being one and a half degree stronger nor the length of the shaft being longer. Love the look on both of them but I feel mizuno clubs might be in my bag very soon. Thank you for the review and keep up the great honest videos !!!!!!
Which set would you say is more forgiving ??
@@BuffaloBarber24 I would have to say they are both very forgiving. The feel of the clubs are very close and the gathering of shots are close to identical. I love the length the Taylor made can give but I ended up with mizuno due to the options of shaft I was looking for. Hope that helps.
Nothing beats a Mizuno blade .. nothing...
squidly2112 : Miura do.........hence tiger woods and others have their irons forged there........
@@any1younger - Tiger began with Mizuno MP14 & MP29 irons (see 1997 Masters, and more), then was sponsored by Titleist and switched to a set of custom Mizuno's with Titleist stamps (a friend of mine who owns a very large golf supply store has an actual set), then switched to a set of Titleist muscle-back blades that were designed by one of the original Mizuno engineers and forged by Miura. Then was sponsored by Nike, who hired that same engineer and worked with Tiger to design the Nike blades and also forged by Miura (not as good, in my view). So, while what you say is sorta true, it's only sorta .. and one could very easily argue whether the Miura forged versions were actually "better" (I would contend NOT, as they had an inferior forging process and inferior material). Don't get me wrong, Miura, who does forging for several companies (including Titleist) does forge some really good irons, I still contend that in muscle-back blades, nobody beats Mizuno. They are, in my view, superior in design and certainly superior in material and forging process to anyone else. I have 3 models of Mizunos that I have played over the past 25 years, MP33, MP37 and MP69 .. I hope to be purchasing a set of MP20's soon. For me, I would never play any other muscle-back blade.
squidly2112 : tiger woods had his irons forged at MIURA FACT! Not mizuno. Just like his Nike balls weren’t Nike balls at all. I do have some inside info on this, but as I have no loyalty to either forging houses I can’t be bothered to argue any more. I just don’t like it when folks make such arrogant, dismissive and wrong statements as you did. You should have said ‘in your opinion’ ..........in my opinion (and tiger woods) MIURA make the best forgings.
@@any1younger - Yes, it is obviously "my opinion" .. however, you have absolutely NO IDEA what "Tiger's opinion" is .. you can only judge by what he has done .. he played Mizuno's for many many years! .. all through his amature career .. and yes, his first set(s) of Titleist irons were NOT forged by Miura .. Titleist didn't manufacture an adequate set of blades for him at the time, they were actually a set of Mizuno's, forged by Mizuno and stamped with Titleist. There is an interview somewhere with Tiger where he briefly talked about it when he was first endorsed by Titleist. I have seen them. A friend of mine owns an actual set (valued somewhere around $35,000 right about now, perhaps more, I dunno) .. they are in FACT Mizuno irons. His later Titleist irons were designed by a former Mizuno engineer, Titleist and Tiger Woods, and forged by Miura (as I indicated). The Nike irons were also forged by Miura and also designed by an original Mizuno engineer (and Tiger woods, and others). Tiger, during his professional career particularly, has played a HUGE array of irons over the years. Some forged by Mizuno, some by Miura and now by Taylormade. I have no idea who is designing them now, but likely Tiger has a lot of input. I have watched interviews with Tiger and a couple of Taylormade people and I know Tiger is working with them pretty closely, he always does. Over the years, there have been several design engineers that Tiger has worked with as well, but he got his roots with Mizuno. For most all of his irons, no matter the manufacturer or the actual forger, they have consistently followed Mizuno designs. It is what he has played with for his entire life and it is what he knows. Pro golfers are creatures of habit and most like to stay with what they know and what feels comfortable. Just ask Sir Nick Faldo, another HUGE fan of Mizuno irons and one of the pickiest players of all time and has worked very closely with Mizuno engineers for many years. ... so again .. in my OPINION .. at the end of the day, consistently, Mizuno makes the best "blade" style irons in the world, bar none! .. and consistently .. from one model to the next .. always the best blade style irons. Other styles (cavity back, etc), I have no opinion, I don't play anything other than blades, and only Mizuno blades. I have tried playing with many many others, but very few even come close, in my OPINION!
P790 won and is more attractive to me thanks good video
3.35 wind assisted 💨 💨
Every little helps.....
TM 6 1/2 iron vs Mizzy 7 iron
the mizuno is 1/2 inch longer measure them side by side
Which has softer feel
both very similar I would say. The HMB sounds a little more clicky against the p790 as its hollow
Mizuno's irons are always consistent distance vice.
I have been using MP20s for two weeks. Coming from the AP3 and switching to the I500 for 6 weeks, I did not like the Ping Low Spin coming into greens with even the 8 iron, these Pings did not hold greens well (or look amazing), the AP3 was far better golfs clubs but felt cheap, the I500 does feel better but does not play like the AP3 to me -same exact shaft-. The Mizuno MP20 HMB feels FAR better than the I500 and while is a couple of yards shorter, it stops on a dime. The MP20 plays better and more solid than the T200, I played the T200s for two weeks while my Mizunos arrived. The T200 feels better that the I500 and AP3, but does NOT compete with the Mizuno. For me it came down to look and feel, the Mizunos just look traditional and clean (shinny) without all these hi-tech implements in the back. I know I made the right choice for me (11 hdcp, 55 yo).
P790 all day 😍
Gaming 919 HM Pro’s, but miss the forged feel of the Mizuno’s. Curious how the 919 HM Pros would stack up against the HMB’s, as both are stronger lofts. Would be a good comparison. Thanks for the videos.
Hi, has anyone seen or does anyone think that a mid or even high handicapper could use these or are these exclusively a single figure handicap club? Interested in what the market for these actually is, how would these compare to the JPX 919 Forged - seen these are the same lofts?
(1) I have the new P790 and the play wonderfully.
(2) More pros play Taylormade and can’t just be money.
Taylormade hands down. The other doesn’t even come in left handed. Lame.
Mizuno wins everytime
The difference for me was 20 yards a club. I couldn’t pass that up. For the first time in years I will not be playing mizzy.
Church of Porsche Just use one club more it’s not all about distance it never has been and never will be use the 14 clubs in your bag! Just my honest opinion.
20 yards isn’t one club. I love mizzy but again, the negligible difference in feel isn’t worth giving up the distance. I also actually liked the top line of the TMs better too.
Church of Porsche well the way lofts are these days it’s more one club than two, I’m not saying TaylorMade aren’t nice clubs I just think at times extra yardage turns golfers minds into thinking distance is king. It was only my point of view on the two sets of irons
Which set would you say is more forgiving ?
@@BuffaloBarber24 you get away with a lot from both. The 790 seems a little bigger, but they are both really forgiving.
HMB looks a lot more control consistent in this test, I'm not talking distance because they are 2 completely different set ups as in lofts/degrees. I sometimes wish lofts were made to a standard, let's just say a 7 iron was 33° across all manufacturers. My weekend round of golf would be so much more enjoyable rather than listening to twats commenting how much further they have hit their 7 iron over mine, how the f#ck can you have 28°/29° 7 iron........that's my rant over with. Good night fellow golfers.
Robert Hind I like to occasionally my old ping eye 2s. 7 iron @ 36deg. Eeek. 😂
You British people say the letter H weird.
It funny when they say the letter H they emphasize it like “haitch” but when they say a word that starts with H they drop it like hello is pronounced ‘ello
Hahahaha...I thought it was only me who thought that! (from Canada).
No, we don’t. It’s largely regional/ personal. For me it’s aitch and hello... 😁
Same with “Z” zed
Further does not mean distance, the word you want is farther.
Farther is an American word. In the UK further covers both distance and figurative applications
The problem with getting a set of Mizuno's is that you are then one of "those people". Its sorta like being a PXG player but more of a weirdo lol.
What?
