+Rose Evans Okay, a little back ground - I started reading into spiritual stuff about 7 years ago (I am 27 now). I was an atheist before that and a religious person even before that. So finally I started ending up between the middle of two things which I consider to be spirituality. One day I was reading a book called "Transforming the Mind" (forgot the name of the author) and it had a section named "Man, the machine" and another one named "Consensus Trance". The content of these two sections hit me so so hard (at that moment I was travelling in a bus and reading the book on my phone). When it hit me, an unknown smile came to my face. I don't know from where it came but it lasted for a few milliseconds only, I closed my eyes and tried to make that happen again. After several tries I did it again but it again lasted for hardly one second. In the following days, I kept reading more and more and started practicing the same thing in my room without any light. I don't know why but a lit tubelight or bulb was always a distraction for me. Through practice, I reached a point where I could sustain that thing for about 30 seconds. And during those 30 seconds, I would laugh and smile so much (alone in the room and without any reason). Later I discovered that it was the gap in those thoughts that made me realize my Being (as Eckhart says in The Power of Now). At this moment in my life, it's all gone. I cannot sustain it for more than a second. I so want to go back to those days again where I could do that. I had reached a point where no sorrow or no happiness could affect me but it's all gone now. I am trying to get back to it slowly. And even now, my mouth automatically gets widened and I start smiling when I sustain it for a second. I used in those days and I think that was a contributing factor in my ability to sustain it for longer periods of time. Currently I am occupied with family and work and I think they are a huge distraction and I sometimes I think I should start living alone again to reach that vibration. Long story short, my question to anyone is - Is there a name for this thing? Perhaps it is called Mindfulness or like 'being in the now' ? Thank you.
+timestamps1212 It is just a different state. maybe of no thought. for a moment you realize you are not your thoughts and just experience life. then you start thinking how great it is and it is gone. that is because you still identify as your thoughts. you think you have a self.
+timestamps1212 you described The power of NOW -of being present (ˆ◡ˆ) fleeting and then it's gone and then its back and so on. Awareness - we are all always connected - 5 mins in Eckhart talks of the collective mind of humanity. Love & Smiles Rose x ☆¨¯`♥ ¸.☆¨¯`♥ ¸.☆¨¯`♥ A s m i l e is a curve that sets everything straight (ˆ◡ˆ)
Rose Evans That's all just pretty talk and fuck all to do with the truth really. The truth is you have no self. Being "present" with your self is a bad second place prize. You're having a nicer dream but that's it. That's cool if that's what you want. If you want to wake up being in the present for a few moments isn't going to do it. Nor will a few hours. Nor a few days.
"If you identify with thinking you are powerless, because you are not there, ... you are run by collective mental patterns!" wow... that's powerful. Thank You so much!
I know the collective mind is a real thing because when I lived in a different culture where a different language was spoken, I became aware that I was outside something real and when I returned to my own culture I remained outside of its "collective mind," so travel not only broadens mind it creates an opportunity to recognize mind as something outside ourselves.
If you strike a tuning fork to produce a tone, and place another tuning fork next to it, the new fork will begin to resonate at the same frequency. Thoughts are vibrations, they are energy. Life does not happen to you, it is attracted to you by your thoughts and emotions.Overcoming old programming and unconscious behaviour is where the work is. Thank you Eckhart, for the wisdom you impart to help lead us out of the maze of self imposed suffering.
As a teen I had a teacher who pulled me aside and wrote down the name of a book and it's author. You sir was the author, and the book was Illusions. She was my English teacher who silently took favor on me. She though big thing awaited me s a writer. She had the class room write a poem for Fire Prevention Week. Weeks later during class the schools principal came over the intercom, and announced that the winner of the poem contest was our very own Carolyn Barlow. She had turned in my poem, with out telling me anything about it I was totally surprised. The poem was on display in Downtown Houston for a while, and I never got the poem back. She saw something in me, that I never knew I was capable of. Thanks for your writing. You were an inspiration on my early years. Most I ever wrote was a couple of cook books. that I never sent off to print. Maybe one day I will.
He is really an enlightened being living in the current era of humanity. Absolutely beautiful to listen to his wisdom always. It makes 100% sense to me when I listen to him. Because I can relate his wisdom with my own experience
wow this guy is good! I have just recently discovered him. It's like I'm at a certain point where I'm blocked and he pierces right through it. Wonderful!
....I'm afraid we are all going to have to get in line! I love him too. He is endearing, wildly in tune and just plain adorable. His giggle~laugh just tears me up. What a beautiful soul.
1;02 - :08 - I swear, this dude constantly brings himself to the present moment every time someone stops speaking and he's about to reply, he seems so grounded.
I love you too Eckhart so millions of persons are loving you are making more strong and conscioussess so you become much more than a spiritual teacher now you are a prophet
Anchor yourself in the now but do not battle your thoughts, allow them to come into your mind and acknowledge them then observe as they simply exit. Gradually this presence in the now will become natural.
Our thoughts are not ours at all. They come from outside - all kinds of sources. Just let them in, examine them, and let them go. Just realize that they are not yours. An effective meditation technique is the "not me, not mine" meditation. Each time you notice that a thought arises you just label it "not me, not mine".
No wonder sometimes I think my thoughts are against me. I disagree with some of my thoughts. They are ridiculous. I thought I had split personalities or I'm a very contradictory person. Now I am aware of these floating, self generated rubbish. Need to train my mind. I started with clearing and cleaning my physical space. Make sure they are not cluttered and I think that helps.
Blaming the mind is simplistic - it's really the untrained mind - being unaware of your mind or not trained to discern the difference between thoughts, feelings and pure awareness , is where people hit a barrier.
I love how Eckhart answered, this really gave me more clarity on that subject. I came across this thought before but couldn't really put it into the right words to ask the right question as she did. With regards to the woman in this video, she has a high energy or level of consciousness this is what everyone is picking up and in turn finding her attractive physically (which is the lie/distraction/collective thought) rather than spiritually or consciously (which would be the truth). This is what I perceived.
Guys if you want to know the origin of your thoughts i suggest you read the Nature of Life e-book by Brian schaeffer it tells you exacly the types of thoughts you have at any given moment its 18 origins and how to consciously connect with your intuition. Bless your Souls much Love and Light
A brilliant speaker, in talking about the universal mind and thoughts are ours . I say that the ground stuff of both the universal mind and individual mind is one and. the same. Thoughts do not exist without awareness, so it is the ground. In tibetan buddhism, it is called luminosity.
Been shot with an arrrow remind me of a zen story. There was bunch of zen monk that discuss if it was that the flag that move or is it the wind that move that flag.. then the zen master walk past them and said "the only thing that moves is your wandering mind"
I love how he used the bubbles way to describe thoughts in a metaphorical sense. From the understanding that has revealed itself via meditation, thought is nothing more than a series of emanations that only get perceived in their abstract state from your conscious lens of perspective because they resonate with some sort of emotion or reaction inherent within the person. They are kind of like bubbles, they are formless bubbles that have a source inherent in the collective consciousness yet they can be perceived via the level of importance we apply to them. These bubble emanations do not have clear boundary lines and they vary in intensity, but they are formless emanations perceived of by the consciousness to occupy the ego and it's desire to interpret the thought from a POV that emphasizes the importance of the thought and it's relation to your being (which is false of course because the thought only effects the ego, Being is unaffected by the thought).
exactly,i agree with strbat,if the intention of asking this question is to attain freedom, we still have to live with suffering in different form in this life, the main point is how to remain sane and resilient despite of all this uncertain adversities...
Everyone has one point of view; But I heard krishnamurti said before when they ask the same question: Thoughts are limited and they come from memory::: which makes sense Thought is a recycle thing That we learned from people in the past such as teachers philosophers, etc.
After years of talk therapy, I can say I pretty much understand where all my issues come from. But none of that matters without a method of turning all that off. Presence turns it all off.
A pity that as the Master was about to elaborate on "how did it all start" 7:40 thus answering the Buddha's arrow question, the lady's ego had to reassert itself on how well it is doing, so transparent, so obvious, such a trap and no answer for the rest of us.
There are two kinds of people: 1) Type 1 keeps getting hit by arrows, and keeps removing them. 2) Type 2 asks where they come from, and stops getting hit by arrows in the first place.
Aurobindo said thoughts are not OURS, though they look "coloured" by our experience. They are produced by Prakriti, Nature, versus Purusha, the global or individual consciousness
@@itsMohitAwasthi Google Sri Aurobindo. He is an ocean in himself. However, for the best intro to him and his yoga, you can read the book by a French disciple of his: Adventure of Consciousness. It's soft copy is available for free online.
wow what a lovely gesture "I love you" with a gentle sweet n lovely tone from a young, vibrant, attractive and a gorgeous lady. And Eckhart take it so gently as he always does it every time. what a lovely scene,I am in love with this lady.peace to all
I would suggest reading (repeatedly) the Bhagavat Gita. There is a great message that the BMI (this Body, Mind, Intellect) is not our true self (our soul or pure consciousness).
The heart senses emotional information five to seven seconds before it happens, while the brain senses it three to five seconds beforehand. So not only are emotions important contributors to our output of thoughts, but they may be one of the best ways to influence and create a change in what and how we think. In 1974, the French researchers Gahery and Vigier, stimulated the vagus nerve (which carries signals from heart to the brain) in cats and found that the heart and nervous system were not simply following the brain’s directions. In 1983, the heart was reclassified as an endocrine gland when a new hormone called atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), which affects blood vessels, kidneys, adrenal glands and regulatory regions in the brain, was found to be being produced by the heart. Dr. J. Andrew Armour discovered the heart also contains a cell type known as intrinsic cardiac adrenergic (ICA), which synthesizes and releases neurotransmitters once thought to be produced only by neurons in the brain and nerve ganglia. The heart starts beating in an unborn fetus before the brain has been formed, a process scientists call “autorhythmic.” Dr. Armour introduced the concept of a functional “heart brain” in 1991. Considered an independent entity, the heart’s brain is composed of an elaborate network of neurons, support cells and neurotransmitters which enables it to process information, learn, remember and produce feelings of the heart and then transmit this information from one cell to another. “We observed the heart was acting as though it had a mind of its own and was profoundly affecting perception, intelligence and awareness,” explained McCraty. According to Goleman, it’s a person’s EQ (Emotional Quotient) that enables them to succeed in life as much or more than their IQ (Intelligence Quotient). During the ‘60s and ’70s pioneer physiologists John and Beatrice Lacey conducted research that showed that the heart actually communicates with the brain in ways that greatly affect how we perceive and react to the world around us. Neurologist Antonio Damasio stresses the rationality of emotion in his book Descartes’ Error, where he emphasizes the importance of emotions in decision-making. He points out that patients with brain damage in the areas of the brain that integrate the emotional and cognitive systems can no longer effectively function in the day-to-day world, even though their mental abilities are perfectly normal.
+Teenage muslimah I agree with your initial remarks, and also believe our emotional states dictate much of our thoughts. For instance, when we are in a ''good mood'', our thoughts are very different than when we are in a ''bad mood''. This mood is usually experienced around the heart and our faces, it can be felt and is not the same as thoughts. Emotions of joy, happiness, love etc.. give us good feelings and fuel the type of thoughts we'll have.
I don't agree with his point of view. I think thoughts come from the subconscious mind. If the subconscious mind was a garden, the soil is your beliefs that you have accumulated along the way, this soil sprouts good plants, strange ones and dark ones. The plants are the thoughts. Fix the soil you fix the plants. Fix the wrong beliefs you eliminate the bad thoughts. Meditation teaches you to sit silently in the garden without judging it.
It´such easy Eckhart, I can easily keep all together, my 30 years engagement to know myself. Es ist eine Zusammenfassung von Buddha Lehre, T.M., Zen Meditation, Karmische Weisheit, Psychologisches Wissen..... Danke Eckhart! Namaste! Beppo Battistini aus Südtirol.
Anyone else watching Joe Dispenza and seeing the uncanny parallels between this talk specifically and his own talks about energy and the quantum field? Crazy.
Shaillesh Tannu How can thoughts come from awareness? Awareness is what is strengthened during Samatha meditation. During the meditation you can see there is a separateness from the constant fleeting thoughts of mind and awareness that sees this. Awareness can see the thoughts arising a ceasing in the mind but doesn’t follow the thoughts which so many do and cause suffering. Strengthening the awareness allows you to see the thoughts are a natural part of the mind, thoughts will arises no matter what, however your attachment to thoughts can be severed. It isn’t a intellectual understanding but rather a teaching that needs to be seen and understood with wisdom and realisation. Once you actually see it you get it. He wasn’t mocking the Buddha ;) All he was saying was that many people find the Buddhist texts a riddle sometimes and don’t understand the answer. All he was saying was he will answer it in layman’s terms for everyone.
I've being seeing thought 'bubbles' for over 20 years, not long after I started meditating as a student. They aren't like bubbles insofar as they aren't slow moving. They're quick, usually quite small and black or white or grey. Often they are round in shape or irregular. Very round jet black ones sometimes hurt or itch when they enter the skin. 99.9% of the time they're pretty unnoticeable though. It's great that this guy knows about them even though he hasn't seen them. Makes me believe in him
I aggree with echart but i would say it like this...thoughts are a social construction. We are fed a narrative, a certain rhetric which we are born into that pushes us into the hands of the five demons...ie egotism/indivdualism, me me me, consumerist mode of thought,;me me meeeeee, lust, jelously, greed, anger, me me meeeee.. n there u have it the birth of the pain body. And if we think of Foucault he would nicely add: the pain body/ and the facets of individualism with there various manifestations have a political/economic function to serve the benefits of the elite. This is why shiv ji states dont focus on the thought content/story/narrative but focus on the gap between thoughts. And make that gap bigger. Here you will see an empty space.....a nothingness but its in this the mirace sits. The sikh Guru, Guru nanak dev ji states it like this keep your 'pot' (mind) empty and medidate upon waheguru/god.
I am afraid that you are grasping things wrong. Thought is like a baby learning to wield a power (consciousness) that is Godly in nature. Noone here, unless they have trained themselves in meditation where they were able to seize thought completely and be pure consciousness, can voice a more correct opinion on thought. Did the egg come first or the chicken? Yes you are correct that thought is connected neurologically. But to say that we are limited to this is false for our identity stretches beyond our present self and even beyond our present body. Our identity capsulated within this ego and body will die, but we will live on for we belong to a body that is bigger to start with. We cant see this because thought has limited us in our scope.
I also share this opinion, that the system we are born into sustains itself by pushing us into the consumerist and narcissistic lifestyle at competition with everyone else. Instead we should be focusing upon things that bring forth harmony like collaboration, compassion, understanding etc. It is up to us however to detach from this mindset and sit still like an unmoving rock in a fast-flowing stream and in doing so we will find that truth and love will flourish. In other words become the lightness within the darkness and do not feel any anger or resentment towards the darkness, it is simply darkness. Besides, without the mud the lotus cannot flower so be grateful for both the context and the result.
'Collective mind' implies that it is an actual thing. For description, I prefer the phrase, 'Collective patterns'. They are a matrix of connotations and attachments, an inevitable product of an individual perspective. If one sees that they are not an individual, they cease to identify with 'collective patterns' and grow distant from them.
Beautiful (uplifting) thoughts like trust, compassion and understanding come from the heart (light and warmth) and it's uplifting "spirit of love". Ugly (heavy) thoughts like sanction, starve, torture, murder and bomb come from a black hole in space called ego and it's joy sucking "spirit of greed (hate)".
So in other words, thoughts are like UA-cam videos. They're all out there at once, about everything imaginable. Things you love, things you hate, positive and negative. You choose which ones you want to see based on how you feel.
Focus on the gap between thoughts. And make that gap bigger.
Peace comes when you observe your thoughts without identifying with them.

yogayantra Dominique can you plz tell me about Aurobindo ??
@@itsMohitAwasthi Google Sri Aurobindo. He is an ocean in himself. However, for the best intro to him and his yoga, you can read the book by a French disciple of his: Adventure of Consciousness. It's soft copy is available for free online.
Beautiful Explanation.Much Love from Sri Lanka

My goodness - I am definitely going to listen to this lesson again - thank you :)
I would suggest reading (repeatedly) the Bhagavat Gita. There is a great message that the BMI (this Body, Mind, Intellect) is not our true self (our soul or pure consciousness).
Absolutely brilliant information to use on a daily basis.
The heart starts beating in an unborn fetus before the brain has been formed, a process scientists call “autorhythmic.”
Dr.
He points out that patients with brain damage in the areas of the brain that integrate the emotional and cognitive systems can no longer effectively function in the day-to-day world, even though their mental abilities are perfectly normal.
well researcher have different theories almost opposite from each other. but I think mostly thoughts are came from unconscious mind ..
What you say could be true :)
Emotions of joy, happiness, love etc.. give us good feelings and fuel the type of thoughts we'll have.
thoughts are not bothersome without uncomfortable feelings. it's the feelings that need addressing.
I keep coming back to this...
Namaste!

astounding answer to an gorgeous lady for an wonderful question.
Anyone else watching Joe Dispenza and seeing the uncanny parallels between this talk specifically and his own talks about energy and the quantum field? Crazy.
I also have the feeling, that we build the brain so complex and perfect it created its own life its own entity.
Thought arises from the ego , then intelligence arises from thought :)
I am not my thoughts. I'm thinking them, creating them, molding them to my will.
Such a vauge answer.
I didn't get why people like him.
Thoughts come from awarenesses, it's so simple.
Shaillesh Tannu
How can thoughts come from awareness?
He wasn’t mocking the Buddha ;)
All he was saying was that many people find the Buddhist texts a riddle sometimes and don’t understand the answer.
Makes me believe in him
My first thought scrolling for the comment section was that I am going in for some thought patterns right here
I aggree with echart but i would say it like this...thoughts are a social construction.
Well said.
+João Anon thought forms= clouds in the sky. The sky= pure consciousness. Im going to say nothing now as im done with articulation.
Sharon Bhara beautiful and helpful! Thank you for your input
The women who asks the question is very attractive!
i just hope that soneday i have the skills that you have to remain in the moment i really happy and present all the time...you are great sir
Think Love🌸💞 heal your self and universe this way
Hahah she is very lovely. And i think that many people find her lovely because she is very light and radiant of love :)
Thoughts are just a reaction to everything around us.
God knows I need a woman just like that - intelligent, attractive and doting.
Such a rare combo these days.
Best explanation ever.
Thank you Eckhart Tolle 🙏👍❤🌺😘💯👌👍💯👏🙏❤🙏❤
Thought originates from our memory , knowledge and experience becomes our memory .
