I imagine finding a new face is next to impossible...too bad, that would make this watch epic. I love the looks of it. Even after watching way too many videos, it still amazes me how exacting making one of these gems is. The hairsprings on the balance still strike me as magic. Another great video!!!!
I have a Hebdomas Pocket watch from the early 1930's. Was given to me as a gift, since I love wrist watches and tinker a lot with them. It's absolutely stunning and looks near new.. very well looked after and really is much more attractive than the Omega watches of the same era. The dial's are a work of art.

Excellent pace and logical treatment are the hallmarks of a well-crafted tutorial. Your narrative evokes the calm necessary to allow the process to be relaxed and enjoyable. Much better than an obligatory task one would rather relegate than perform personally. Your sincere enjoyment draws the viewer/listener into the linear journey of tear-down and rebuild almost seamlessly and engagingly, too. I found it especially helpful that you noted peculiarities of this model's design features. Those little unknowns are often what turns a fun project into a hair-pulling nightmare needlessly.
Always learn something when I see someone so engaged in making it super user friendly info.

Pink is said to be a color that reduces aggression. Maybe they intended to make watchmakers extra cautious with the largest screwdriver.
hard to imagine the tooling and production of those tiny screws during that time period

Great to hear! Just make sure you let the mainspring all the way down and be very careful when taking the barrel off, as the mainspring is very strong. Good luck!

This video is just what I needed! I'm used to Elgins and Walthams, but recently acquired one of these 8 day watches. it's running, but not well. I went to clean and oil it and realized I didn't have a clue about how it was put together. Thanks!

Beautiful vintage watch and great job on the restore. Too bad about the dinger on the side of the case. A few round tip punches and soft hammer taps could bring that right out too. The is quite a unique watch. Beautiful!

What a beautiful watch. That dial is stunning even with the crack in it. I became really interested in watches when I replaced the battery in my Lorus which seemed to be eating batteries. I've given up with it now and I'm wearing a ladies skeleton mechanical/automatic watch which my son bought me for Mother's Day. I'm hoping to try/learn watch repair myself once I can gather some of the tools required. I've decided not to bother with cheap tools but start collecting good quality tools. Oh, as a lady, I'd call the screwdriver pink. Salmon is what I eat 😄

Great job, I love pocket watches my father had one and he was very proud of it.
Pocket watches were my first love, actually. I was like 13 or that age and fancied walking around 😉with a pocket watch. And no, I'm not so old that that would be a common thing
I actually worked on one quartz movement, on a Linden kitchen clock. It had a wire broken on one end of the coil bobbin. I was able to fix it with a very thin wire and some solder.

The name Hebdomas means a group of seven in Greek, and it was often used to refer to the end of a week, similar to the concept of the Sabbath.

What a nice watch, I don't know much in time keeping pieces, but when you reinstall the main spring in its barrel, weren't you supposed not to touch it with your bare fingers ??

The pallet fork has a great deal of wobble, it seems to have elongated its upper pivot bearing by at least 80%. I only observed this, and know
very little about watches, and am curious about how far off tolerances can be without compromising accuracy?

Thanks for watching! Yes, this watch has quite some wear and the ambition level was mostly to make it run again. The owner didn't want to spend a lot of money on it, and accuracy was never a goal :)
Saw this video very late. But such a beautiful piece. The escapement on the dial side seemed to move in the opposite direction, but when you seen any wheel on the reverse side, it will be the opposite of what you saw first. I don't know the technical name for this.
Hello K, yes, the escape wheel turns in the "wrong" direction! It is due to the extra wheel that allows for the 8 day power reserve. They could of course have simply put the mainspring in the other way, but that's how they decide to do it :)

Very well done sir. I really don't think pocket watches are "easier" especially very old movements can be way more tricky than a modern wrist movement 1/3 of the size or less...
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel! Pocket watches with the Swiss lever escapement I think are mostly easier to work on given the size and familiar mechanics, but if you have a cylinder escapement or a fusée etc, it's a whole different ballgame indeed...
Great job, its very intersting seing you solving problems one after the other! I own a Breguet hebdomas and it works once in a while. it has some problems!

It's indeed fun and very fulfilling to work on old watches and making them run :) The Hebdomas is not a complicated watch, so any watchmaker should be able to help you with it. I suppose you're based in Spain? Find a watchmaker that focuses on vintage watches and you should be fine.

I agree with Robert--always learn a lot from your videos. I've recently ordered a couple of old Ricoh automatics from eBay. They're not fancy, but I like the way they look. The sellers claimed they've been refurbished, but they look rough to my (admittedly untrained) eye. Have you ever worked on Ricoh watches?
Thanks so much for your comment, that's truly great to hear! I've not worked on any Ricoh's, but they are solid quality and some of them have a lateral lever instead of the common pallet fork. They should be great for working on.
@@VintageWatchServices Oh, don't let me misrepresent myself--I don't know a thing about watchmaking. I was gearing up to ask if I could send them to you for repairs! But your videos are fascinating and it's nice to learn more about the inner workings of these machines.
@@VintageWatchServices They used something called the "Dynamic Wide" escapement which is wider than a typical Swiss lever and has a shallower bank angle. It is banked on a single pin in the main plate. I believe it was an attempt to improve the efficiency of the escapement.

Then after running for a while a microscopic fragment of porcelain loosens and falls into the mechanism locking it all up. I have a pocket watch with damage to the face, i havent bothered having it serviced, because it will not last.

Nice restoration. Do you think there's a way that the crack in the enamel could be cleaned somehow, so that it's not aged/yellow? I'm sure I read about denture cleaner for this, but that might sound a bit drastic.
Hello Mark, yes, you can use polident or similar. I don't remember exactly why I didn't use it but think maybe I was a bit worried about broken off pieces coming completely loose.
Hi, nice watch and service, but curious why you did not straighten the hair spring? It looked like it was bent on the outer section, which would hit the 2nd ring every time it rotated, thus the irregular rotation and beat. Thanks.
Hi there, thanks for watching and for your question! I think the confusion might be because the hairspring has a Breguet overcoil? These hairsprings look bent when looking straight at them, as the last coil is bent upwards and inwards to make the hairspring develop more concentrically.

What is it called when it has those green circles going around it? I've been searching for a specific watch all over the internet. It also has those circles going around it, but a bigger circumference going along the watch. I believe it is a Waltham, but all I have to go by is a blurry picture. All help is appreciated! Hello Stephan, you can try to search for a cartouche dial. That would be the closest, I think.
Thank you for your video. I will be attempting this in the near future. I can not find a replacement crystal. Could you provide the dimensions I would be looking for or a alternate watch crystal that is a suitable fit?
Thanks for watching! You need to measure the crystal and then order a new one ever so slightly bigger. E.g if you measure 42.0mm you should order 42.2 mm.

Hello Travis, I don't mind at all :) I bought mine at Cousinsuk.com, but pretty much any material house would have them. If you're in the US, ofrei, esslinger etc would also have them, I should think.

Hello. I have one of this that was from my grand grandfather. It is missing the hour and minute markers, but it still working. Do you know where i can find them?
Hello Roberto, if the markers on the watch are missing, it'll be next to impossible to replace them, I'm afraid. The only option would most likely be to replace the dial, which is something you wouldn't want to do unless really necessary.
Do you ever restore the old Bulova Accutrons......either the 214 or 218 movement?
