I was really surprised by this all new 2021 Specialized Stumpjumper. A 29er trail bike with 140mm Fox 34 fork and 130mm Flex pivot rear suspension.... it was incredible! I love a bike with a lot of pop and zip to it... With a 65 degree HTA and 76 degree STA, it has excellent geometry for both climbing and descending. I'm glad they are sponsoring you and I love the concept of The Pro's Closet. That said, I checked out the site and was shocked by the prices on 2-3-year-old bikes. I think I'd rather pony up the extra $700 or so and get something with a warranty and shop support as well as brand new components.

Still love thinking back to when I reviewed this bike for the first time this year… I’m not really much of a Specialized fan by any means and this bike shocked me on how lively zippy and fun/ capable it was for 90% of the trails we have here in NorCal! Amazing little ripping bike that feels totally alive.. completely different then the other stumpy’s I’ve tried.

Bike works great in New England too! All I did was set the flip chip to high to get a little more pedal clearance.

Hey! I got my bike about a month ago and I absolutely fell in love with it! Before that I had a trek fuel ex 18` and Stumpjumper feels more lively and athletic, surprised by its low weight and rigidity at that weight. It is also the quietest bike I have ever owned. My bike experience is absolutely the same as yours!

I built up the same frame this season and agree that the 34 gets overwhelmed a little quicker than the rest of the bike. I recently switched out the front suspension with a 150mm lyrik and, to my surprise, the bike really shined and became more of a do it all type rig. I even took it to the bike park and, for the most part, felt like it handled things well. Definitely a special bike!

@@bthomas518 I left it in the low setting and it felt completely fine. At one point I put a RS Super Deluxe Ultimate on it too which made it feel slightly more “stable” at higher speeds. But ultimately it felt a little over damped so I went back to the stock shock because that tune really does play best with the bikes kinematics.
Built that frame this year and absolutely love it! Went with a 36 Grip 2 and Reserve wheels and the bike climbs so well and feels awesome on the downhills.

@@mtbyumyum I haven’t yet. I wanted to run a season on the 140 and really get a feel for it. I may swap it out when I service the lowers. However, I don’t feel like I really need more than 140…

I bought a 2021 Stumpy Comp Carbon a ways back to serve as my short travel bike. Absolutely love it. So much fun. On fast, flowy or jump trails, the bike absolutely rips. It loves to pump and pop everywhere. I have to run 250psi in the rear to keep from bottoming ( I weigh just over 200 lbs) and It does feel a bit firm, so I've noticed it beats me up a little on fast chunky and rooty trails that have lots of fast repeated hits, but for most trails it is the perfect companion. It really feels like it wants to go fast everywhere, even more so once I dumped the heavy (2300g) stock wheel for something better.

Another great review! The comparison is interesting with the Pivot 429. I had an old Stumpjumper (2016) and switched to a Pivot Trail 429 this year. I like the Horst link suspension on my past Enduros but never cared for it on the shorter travel Stumpie. Never felt that good in any situation. I'm glad Specialized switched it up in their models. The short travel DW link on the 429 feels super supportive when accelerating/climbing and plush (for 120mm) when going over rougher terrain.
The alloy Stumpjumpers still have the the four bar Horst link... as well as on the Stumpy EVO's. I have an older Stumpjumper 29er with The Brain on the rear. I run the Fox shock at only 20- 25% sag, and I run the rebound at dead middle of the settings...6 clicks out of 12. The Brain really works on the small bumps and reduces the feel of pedal input. Running higher air pressure really helps to keep the bike firm at the top of the stroke, and keeping the rebound slower doesn't promote bucks and chatter. It makes the stoke more linear than squishy and overly progressive. I ride steep rooty, off camber hiking trails with punchy technical climbs. Not many long downhills or speed runs. That Brain makes the rear wheel track so well and gain traction on almost on any terrain. Also, If the bike had Specialized tires, that may explain your traction comment. I run a Spec Butcher up front, and it is top notch, but I swapped the fast rolling Spec Purgatory rear tire for a Maxxis Minion DHR II. That made the bike a cornering demon. Great content as usual. Everyone seems to love the flex-stays on the rear suspension. I have to get a leg over one of these to compare with 25 years of riding Horst link Specialized bikes.
It's pretty different front the high traction horst link... more lively and sporty feeling. For a shorter travel trail bike, it's right up my alley! Still love my Rocky Mountain Altitude smooth link (horst link) for it's incredibly open, controlled and deep feeling though!

I highly recommend going off the 16mm recommendation in the manual. I usually do the old 30% eyeball measurement but because is the digressive tune on the shock sag is definitely a little more finicky to get dialed

I was certain my next bike purchase, to compliment my switchblade v2, was going to be a Spur! I was so excited about looking for one and building it up the way I wanted, but I guess it wasnt meant to be just yet, for I have been ruined. I finally rode a friends turbo levo and now I am convinced I need an ebike!
So my problem with your channel is that you dont review them, but I wish you did as there are not a ton of channels out there that do, and certainly not any with the integrity of MTByumyum!

Jason, I owned the new Trail 429 also. Its a better climber but couldnt get rid of the cable rattle all the way. Did you experience cable rattle on your Pivot? You nailed it by saying how silent the Stumpy is. Its the quietest bike ive ever owned. Its so good on multiple types of terrain. Its also an amazingly well balanced bike. Great work. Keep it up.
I still don't understand why Pivot hasn't figured this out.... the dropper cable is 4mm and the housing on the Pivot frames is meant for 5mm.... so you have to either swap out your dropper cable for a 5mm or put some electrical tape around the 4mm cable at the point where the cable runs into the housing on the frame.... and even then sometimes it rattle ever so slightly. Drives me crazy. Stumpy was dead silent!!
@@mtbyumyum I'm 51 years old and been riding since 1989 and I have ridden and owned many bikes. This bike is the most comfortable and quietest bike I've owned. It kills the descents on my trails and it climbs really well. It's such a great all around true trail bike. If I could, I would put the rear end of the trail 429 on this Stumpy and it would be my dream bike. I wrote to Pivot about the cable rattle, they acknowledged they have that issue and told me how to fix it. I did the electrical tape and foam inside the downtube, still have some rattle. I told them for a bike that I paid over 6K after taxes it was unacceptable to have to use "electrical tape" on cables. So they sent me a tshirt! LOL. Will be watching your livestream.
Great review! While Specialized sems to have done a great job with the Evo the regular Stumpy seems to be getting better reviews....Your traction comment makes perfect sense, its a modified single pivot - snappy, quick, good axel path but ultimate traction in corners or decending - DW, FSR split pivot should all be better. Pinkbike was also very surprised by this bike. Go figure abandon the horst link and win BOTY??
Although Pinkbike gave the Evo bike of the year!!!
I actually think it tracks better than the Ripley FWIW, but maybe not the new Trail 429.
Trust me, I was as surprised as anybody..... I couldn't believe how well it climbed and just the overall level of support from the suspension system. For most people, on most trails, at average speeds (fun everyday speeds) this is the bike! I could totally rock this as my only bike with a fox 36 up front or a Pike. We'll be talking more at length about this in the Live Stream Wednesday evening!!
@@mtbyumyum agree. I had a Cannondale Habit with a flex stay that felt more pogo-y. I was shocked at how damped and composed the rear on this felt by comparison.

The Epic Evo is truly incredible and made the SJ feel like a dog. A lot of that was probably the tires... But I fell in love with the Epic Evo and thought "I really hope Yum Yum reviews this thing." Surprised it doesn't have a Fox 36. I know that some models of the Evo Stumjumper comes with a 38. I would definitely get a bigger fork for the Stumpy non-evo.

Hey didzy! Where do you live/ what kind of trails do you ride?
The Transition will allow you to hit any trails with confidence, but not needed in majority of the country. I’d go with the Stumpy for a do it all bike. You’ll be able to get up/down anything!
@@MTBCoop mixed terrain really a lot of climbing and long days in the saddle, want a bike that’s still very capable on any type of terrain even if it gets mega rough, but also not a pig to climb on all day

I wouldn't recommend the Sentinel to someone wanting an all day climbing bike. It has a very high top end, needs speed to wake up and start having a good time. The Stumpy would be a lot more fun at more typical speeds and will climb all day! Between the two you have the sb130 or 130LR, Rascal, Ripmo and Switchblade that will do slightly better on the chunky days and still climb better than the Sentinel... we can discuss more in the live stream here on Wednesday evening!

Great review, that seems to be the sweet spot for 29ers these days. I was ready to pull the trigger on a Ripley and now this review has me thinking about the StumpJumper. Were you paid by how many times you mentioned Pros_Closet? If I had to say one neg thing about the review is the droning on about "Pros_Closet" was a bit much. But I commend you for knowing where your bread is buttered.
I have a full time job the requires 40-50 hours a week, a wife, 3 kids and church functions that take up a lot of my time. These video's are made in my spare time... my "me" time or time for my hobbies... I'm only able to produce video reviews like this because of the paid video sponsors like the Pro's Closet. With out them paying me to mentioned their brand, this video would not have been made. Viewers like you get to watch for the price of a few minute of your time so thank you!! And! That’s awesome that the pros closet offfers certified pre-owned bikes but there prices are basically the same as going brand new! And that’s usually for a bike that’s a year or two old. Doesn’t seem worth the price to me in most cases.
They have raised all their bikes prices during Covid two year ago. Four years ago, the used bikes at PC were priced very good. I bought 2 bike from PC. But not now, prices are very high now.

The stumpy is more easy going. More neutral riding position. The yeti sb 130 feels more efficient, more rewarding to ride when you really push it and has the better suspension system.

Great video! Luckily had a good experience getting an s works off pinkbike. Been loving it in corner canyon. However, I'm not sold on the Fox 34 and considering swapping to a Pike. Not sure what offset to get though 42mm vs 51mm. I'm about 200lbs riding an S5 and want to keep it at 140mm in the front.

OMG Onyx hubs! Tell us more about them! I've been wondering about them for years, and whether it's worth the hassle of rebuilding my wheelsets just to get the silent Onyx hubs.
Does the riding exprerience differ when there's no more loud buzzing of expensive hubs?
Yeah, this was my first time riding them. After a handful of rides, they're cool, but they're not for me. My favorite hubs are dt swiss 240's. They're quiet enough, super light weight and I just love the way they feel. The instant engagement of the onyx hubs was sort of weird. Also, you sort of just sneak up on other riders... the free wheeling hub sort of lets others know your there...
@@mtbyumyum I love my Onyx hubs - the quiet is one of the best features! Also, once they 'break in', you won't find a lower resistance rolling hub. It is amazing how much more speed I can pick up on the downhills compared to my riding buddies.

@@mtbyumyum yep, try a set on a downhill roll test - you'll be amazed at how fast they accelerate and keep speed. totally worth the 80-100g weight add
Thanks for the review! Bummed the livestream didn't work out. I have a ripley with a light piggyback shock and a pike at 140. It sounds like we have similar riding styles. I can't quite get a good gauge on whether the stumpy would get me that much more capability over the beefed up Ripley.
It sounds like we have similar riding styles and riding experience. I just find that I always leave the enduro bike (sentinel) at home, even on more serious terrain because I love a playful, fun bike. I'm always looking for the most capable bike that still feels zippy, the ripley can sometimes just feel a little too exciting :).
Yeah, bingo! Sounds like we enjoy similar bikes. It's maybe a little hard to say about the Stumpy... my Ripley is built incredible light weight and fast... I wonder if a beefed up Ripley would feel more similar to the Stumpy. In any case, the new Stumpjumper is a lot of fun... not trading my Ripley for it tho!!

I considered this as I was able to find an expert in xl but ended up going with a tallboy. Always wanted a Santa Cruz and didn’t know what to think about a flex stay for 200+ lb riders. I already ride a 160/160 long travel all mountain and bikes with 140/130 seem too close if I’m going for two bikes vs one bike solution
Yeah, and the TB4 is so good.... totally understand why so many people love that bike. For me, it's a bit on the heavy side for my short travel bike.
@@mtbyumyum I justify the weight because my 160/160 is 36 lbs 😂. I just tell myself I’ll never miss having a sub 30 lb bike since I’ve never tried one lol and don’t know what it’s like to climb a 26lber.
@@mtbyumyum but as a one bike option….TB4 or Stumpy? Is the TB a better enough descender to warrant the climbing and weight penalty?
@@mtskibum16 I have a TB4 with a 140 Pike and it's just about perfect. Granted it's the CC X01 Reserve, so 28.5/9 lbs or so rather than 31ish for lower end builds. Swap for lighter tires/cranks (honestly the Reserves are beefy for carbon too - can shave 3-400 grams going to Roval SLs..) and you can hit around 27 lbs, maybe less. It's not a bad climber by an means, I actually think it climbs great, there are just bikes that are slightly more efficient uphill. Stronger legs > "superior climbing" bike, though, and rotational weight is way more important than a frame's weight. Rode a Ripley around that was 26 lbs but didn't feel as planted to the ground on fast descents - preferred my TB4.
TB4 is a super capable bike with that 120/140 setup (my only bike). The frame seems like it can take such a beating (hence their weight penalty). Wife has 140/150 2019 Stumpy Carbon Expert (w/ carbon Rovals) though.. also a blast. I'd honestly just get whatever you can get your hands on first.. I'd be happy on either.
@@yes-7018 I’m honestly more interested in pedaling character than weight. I want something responsive and snappy when on the pedals in punchy stuff or pumping flatter terrain. Plus something that likes to pop and has good descending chops. Weight is certainly not a primary concern.

What would the main differences be between the stumpy expert and the yeti sb130? Which one climbs/pedals better and which one is more playful? You said the yeti was more capable. Trying to decide between these two. Thanks!

Hey there with your oval chin ring when you’re in your bottom two and top two gears are you experiencing chain contact/rubbing on your chain stay protectors when the bike isn’t under sag? The chain looks super close to the chain stay

This bike was the one who got away from me… or so I thought. Based on your review and other bikes I have ridden that you reviewed, this bike is no good for my local trails. Good to know. By the géo it looks extra rowdy and if anything it would ride bigger than it’s travel. You saying it is the opposite is a real service.
Yeah, I would put this in the same ball park as the Pivot Trail 429 and Santa Cruz Tallboy

For downcountry, or where xc meets trail, I would go Rekon. 2.4 Rekon is probably my favorite tire right now. I have over 1,000 miles on this tire matched with other tires like the 2.35 Ardent Race on the back and Rekon on front, Rekon front and rear and I used to run Rekon rear 2.4 Dissector front... but I like the other two options better and moving more toward rekon front and rear. Fast rolling and good predictable grip!

I too have ridden the Rekon 2.4 quite a bit and used similar set ups - currently have the stock 2.4 Dissector front w Rekon rear on my Spur and had Rekon front Rekon Race on my Mach 4 SL most of the summer (in Park City) - and think it is a good tire front and rear (prefer it over the Dissector). I am building up a weight-weenie Epic Evo and am curious about the Purgatory as an alternative… somewhat similar profile and I find Specialized tires to be more durable in the lighter casings… The Purgatory Control is 120g lighter than the Rekon 2.4 in its lightest casing - time two = almost half a pound.
How do you think it boosts off of jumps in comparison to other bikes buddy. I heard another review refer to it as a 209er Santa Cruz 5010 and that’s a bold statement statement. More importantly I’m an ibis Ripley lover and we both know how that thing boosts you mentioned traction and a few other things in the video but I don’t recall you mentioning the comparison for jumping
It’s like a more damped Ripley. Rear end is a bit less springy, but better than a Horst link. (Just made the switch from a v4 to this)
Doesn't have as much character as the Ripley... David Mongan nailed it, more damp and supportive in the rear... live the new Pivot Trail 429. More stable and controlled descending, doesn't feel as flickable as the Ripley but that could be sizing... I love the sizing on the Ripley. I loved the sizing of the Yeti SB100 and 115 but that bike lacks stability and control even more than the Ripley.... I'm always on the hunt for a Trail Bike that behaves more like an XC bike.... The Trail 429 is probably best in class right now.... size M is just a little to long for me even with a 35mm stem. The new stumpy geo is so money!!! We will talk a lot more about this in the Live Stream Wednesday evening!!

How does this bike compare to the fezzari Delano you previously reviewed?
Hey Jason, I have a beefed up Spur with a 130 Pike and Deluxe. I've considered picking up a Stumpy frame and swapping my parts over, since it sounds like the Stumpy climbs just as efficiently, is just as light, but has more travel. How would you say the two compare?
I'd personally take the Stumpy over the Spur 8 days a week. Better trail manners imho!
@@mtbyumyum interesting! I've wondered about the Spur/Stumpy comparison given both use flex stays in a short travel package. Lots of excitement from people for the Spur, for good reason. I almost bought one...then the Stumpy came out with similar weight, similar geo, flex stays, more travel, and good price point. Needless to say it has been an amazing bike.

How does this compare to you other favorite 130 bike-the Revel rascal? I know it will be about 2lbs lighter but can it climb tech/go downhill as well as the rascal? Does it feel as planted and as nimble as the Rascal? Also can you speak about the tires. It seems like you have been a Maxxis guy for a while, how do you like the specalized purgatory and butcher tires?
Pretty different from the Rascal. Rascal feels deep.... bottomless like riding a magic carpet. Rascal is in the Switchblade, Ripmo, SB130 LR category and this Stumpy feels more like the Trail 429
I got the evo comp earlier this season and have been loving it so far, such a great bike. I live in colorado and ride here and in moab, and it seems to be a perfect bike with a lot of room for me to grow into as well.

More stable, holds a line better.... geo on this Stumpy is excellent. Ripley feels a bit more sporty, more playful and poppy. Climbs a little better too.... this bike is maybe somewhere between the ripley and sb130
I’ve been debating between a Ripley and Ripmo for a one bike quiver and leaning towards a Ripley with 140 Pike/36 and likely a piggyback shock. Do you think those changes to the Ripley gets it close to the capability of the Stumpy?
What is the geometry? I’m in St. George and wondering if you feel it would be a good pick for the terrain down here?
Yeah, depending on your speed and what trails you ride most often, it would be very good!

you may want to check out this review by Guy Kesteven along with yum yum he does awesome bike reviews just a different perspective on this bike entirely before you drop your hard earned money it would be worth checking out this is his final review on the stumpy , he's worked with specialized and tweeked it several times at this point to get it to respond to his liking and doesn't seem to achieve a setting that climbs with any power response.(may want to have the captions on has a thick British accent accent) nothing but love for yum yum great reviewer!

I could be wrong but he is bought and paid for by Santa Cruz.... so take that for what you want. I'm well supported by a bike shop that doesn't sell Specialized and I loved the new Stumpy.... I have nothing to gain by saying so.
I believe his reviews are pretty non biased he just reviewed the stumpy Evo comp alloy and loved it(also said it was a better climber even with the added weight) just saying anyone who's is going to drop thousands of dollars on a new bike is probably exploring all the reviews and hopefully test riding which is a major pain in the Ass anyway especially if you want to test it on a trail (I digress). Because here in the Midwest where you need to create more of the thrills of the trail and being a middle aged dude power return is very important to me. So keep on doing what you're doing reviewers like you and Guy lead me choose Pivot trail 429 which I love.
This bike is crying out for a pike on it, more capable than a 34 and weigh almost the same

I put a Fox 34 on mine as I already have an AM bike. I like the lighter feel with the 34 on this bike.
S5 size frame, 36 at 150, chunkish tires = 27 lbs.
I keep hearing this but don't understand. 34 feels plenty stiff (165 lb rider) and Grip2 is so much nicer than Charger damper.
@@ehvoslef personal preference but I have two bikes. My Stumpy has a 34 and my Devinci Troy has a 36. I find the 34 perfectly acceptable for me at 200lbs. Since I have an AM bike already I don’t want to muck up the desired intent I had for the SJ. I wanted it as light as possible and I find the 34 is great.

Could you tell me you fork setup. Psi and compression and rebound. I am using most of rear travel with 30% sag but at 170lb setting rear at 210psi higher than recommended psi but having trouble using more than a 100mm on front at 75psi. Lower than recommended. Afraid to go to low on frond not wanting fork to not offer enough support on the downs. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Not sure how the rear end "locks up" when climbing when the antisquat is below 90% at sag and goes down sharply through the travel.
It’s very supportive out of the saddle. Not sure how that relates to the numbers but it is.
The BB offset is huge. The weight distribution is sorted. It isn’t just AS that defines pedalling efficiency. The AS also falls off to avoid kickback.

Great video. Could you give me your suspension set up I am 170 and running 210psi in the rear for 30% sag. I have a factory grip2 fork 1 spacer and 78 psi. Using most travel in rear and only 100mmin the front. Was thinking no spacers and 75psi. And help would be greatly appreciated

142 psi in the shock, 68 psi in the fork and I weight 145 lbs. 6 clicks from full fast on the rebound
@@mtbyumyum we are about the same size and I feel like 142 psi in the shock has me using all the travel on very mellow riding where I would expect to use 50-75%. Also, 142 has me at about 35-40% sag. Did you use the specialized calculator or set sag the old fashioned way? I assume you didn't have these issues? Loving the videos. Thanks!!
Hi I’m really curious on how this feels compared to the Ibis ripley af- I know there is a cost difference- but are they similar in well roundedness? Does one climb or descend better?
Because this Stumpjumper I had on demo from The Pros Closet is so much lighter weight than a standard alloy Ripley, it feels quite a bit easier to move around and just generally more flickable and maneuverable. That said, the carbon Ripley at a similar weight as the Stumpjumper I demo'd, will feel more flickable... It would be very interesting to ride an alloy stumpy and ripley af back-to-back. Why did the livestream get pulled down?
It's so frustrating.... It got interrupted and dropped at the 1 hour mark... I restarted it on a new live stream. I've owned quite a few bikes in the past that were absolutely uncomfortable to ride and they always ended up as garage wall decor . I'm not seeing that with this one. It's pretty light I've only ridden it a few miles but I like it . As for the pedals falling off in the other reviews , the pedal arms are aluminum along with the pedal studs look to be also . I would not overtighten them. I can see it would be very easy to overtighten them and strip the threads right off . All in all I think it's pretty good quality besides the aluminum pedal thing .
The Stumpjumper died in 2017. It’s been downhill ever since…and not in a good way.
