Honestly anything the dealership added to the car is a scam to increase total price. Winter Floor mats at $250, exterior protection $300, wheel locks $150, etc. complete joke. Most of the time you can negotiate these things off

I was car shopping recently looking for a good mpg commuter car and found a 2018 Nissan Sentra. They were asking $19k. I liked the car and decided to get it. After their ridiculous mark ups and hidden fees the otd price was $37k!! I got up and walked away and the salesman got a major attitude and had the audacity to thank me for wasting his time. He said “the 2 hours I spent with you could have been put towards selling a car to another customer”. I said “look around dude, I’m the only customer here” which made him more angry. I couldn’t believe the final price was almost double the asking price. I went across the street to another dealer and the sticker prices were so high I went home. This is crazy and people need to stop paying these prices and they’ll start going down. And That’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma

The dealers know they can talk impatient idiots into this kind of mistake. By the time the car is out of it's lifecycle they'll probably still owe MSRP on the thing.
Guys its the same here in the UK, Land Rovers in particular are going for silly prices(especially the new defender), but also if you where lucky enough to have ordered a brand new car 12 months ago and took delivery you could sell it the next day for $40k over what you paid. That’s unbelievable. It’s crazy that this is actually allowed by law. Fortunately this is not possible here in Germany. New cars can’t be sold over sticker. The dealerships can’t just make their own prices with new cars. However the used car market is off the charts here in Germany as well. Pretty much any used car ( really old or nearly new cars, doesn’t matter) went up 10-30%. It’s really ridiculous.
Plus the Lexus IS 500 is a “1 of 500” launch edition and that blue RCF track edition is a “1 of 50” . The dealerships are using limited run vehicles to run up the price also
I worked in sales for 5 years & all our New cars always had markup before COVID. It was $5,000 markup for ETCH, Cilajet, Clearshield. Our GT-R’s had $20,000 & Ram TRX’s had $30,000 markup, but that was normal for us. Typically people will negotiate the markup or just go thru the Costco Auto Program to avoid any markup.
I live across the street from the Toyota dealership you visited. It’s insane to see these markups. Thank you for exposing these greedy bastards. Of course, I blame the consumer for being dumb enough to pay that price as well.
So in Virginia we don't have the market adjustment, but after you negotiate the price. You go in a back room with the finance person and all those extra are then pitched to you. You don't to get them. Also, ask who the companies are that provide the interior and exterior protection. Alot of dealerships will tell you that rock chips are covered,but when you speak to the actual company that is providing the paint correction will tell you different. We learned this with our gladiator and had I read the fine print on the contract, it said it right there, does not covered rock chips or paint chips. Only covered fading and cracking of the paint.

Yeah, here also in Belgium we don't have those markups. We sell cars at (nearly) the same price of what the manufacturer tells to sell them. We can't give a car 10k markup because we are not allowed an to many competitors nearby. Also I would feel bad if we did that. Meanwhile people order a car and wait a year or more to receive it. We recently purchased a new Mini Cooper 5 door hatch, the dealership said they can’t mark up from original price (regulation/etc) since a one year old used one with less spec is £2k less and this is in the U.K. used car prices are mental over here right now tho.

One thing about these huge mark-ups is you cannot finance, or lease these mark-ups. On leases it’s normally a small percentage. Financing is the same way. So, you will have to pay that out of pocket.

So I can speak on behalf of the dealership I work for and the dealerships in the surrounding area I work at a Hyundai dealership in Coastal Georgia and we have addendum‘s Appearance and dent protection and tint (total $1757 increase over MSRP) with no additional dealer markup and most dealerships in my surrounding area have no markup other than luxury brands and dodge stores so it hasn’t hit us that bad but inventory is very scarce most lots are running at about 35%-50% Of what they usually have

Toyota Landcruisers are ridiculously popular in Australia now as the borders have been shut for so long. My local Toyota dealer Brighton Toyota have basically turned their showroom floor into a Landcruiser museum to fill the floor space! I swear at one point they had only one (or extremely few) demonstrator vehicles of the new 300 series. Tbf if you’re willing to wait awhile you can order a new car without a markup here in LA. My cousin just bought a brand new bronco and waited 6 months and got it with zero markup. But all the ones on the lot had a 15k markup. That said, this a legal robbery. They’re targeting the people who just have to have a certain car and can’t wait, and people who cannot buy a used car and need a car today. Sadly, people are still buying in this market. Not as much but the markup is making 10x over up for the lack of inventory. Buy Used, wait or just don’t buy.

I live in Kansas and the mark up is just as bad here as well. People have offered ten grand for my old truck because I take care of it. Some of the mark ups that I have seen been what you have found and worse. Some of the work trucks are around 50000 to 80000 mark up. Some of the people I work with are trying to find a new vehicle but it is insane when they see the prices and the amount of money that they are right now.

Honestly anything the dealership added to the car is a scam to increase total price. Winter Floor mats at $250, exterior protection $300, wheel locks $150, etc. complete joke. Most of the time you can negotiate these things off

I was car shopping recently looking for a good mpg commuter car and found a 2018 Nissan Sentra. They were asking $19k. I liked the car and decided to get it. After their ridiculous mark ups and hidden fees the otd price was $37k!! I got up and walked away and the salesman got a major attitude and had the audacity to thank me for wasting his time. He said “the 2 hours I spent with you could have been put towards selling a car to another customer”. I said “look around dude, I’m the only customer here” which made him more angry. I couldn’t believe the final price was almost double the asking price. I went across the street to another dealer and the sticker prices were so high I went home. This is crazy and people need to stop paying these prices and they’ll start going down. And That’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma

The dealers know they can talk impatient idiots into this kind of mistake. By the time the car is out of it's lifecycle they'll probably still owe MSRP on the thing.
Guys its the same here in the UK, Land Rovers in particular are going for silly prices(especially the new defender), but also if you where lucky enough to have ordered a brand new car 12 months ago and took delivery you could sell it the next day for $40k over what you paid. Even MK8 Golf R's are selling for £60k ($82k) for a Golf which is crazy!!!

That’s unbelievable. It’s crazy that this is actually allowed by law. Fortunately this is not possible here in Germany. New cars can’t be sold over sticker. The dealerships can’t just make their own prices with new cars. However the used car market is off the charts here in Germany as well. Pretty much any used car ( really old or nearly new cars, doesn’t matter) went up 10-30%. It’s really ridiculous.

I worked in sales for 5 years & all our New cars always had markup before COVID. It was $5,000 markup for ETCH, Cilajet, Clearshield. Our GT-R’s had $20,000 & Ram TRX’s had $30,000 markup, but that was normal for us. Typically people will negotiate the markup or just go thru the Costco Auto Program to avoid any markup.
But now, dealers won't even negotiate a markup

I live across the street from the Toyota dealership you visited. It’s insane to see these markups. Thank you for exposing these greedy bastards. Of course, I blame the consumer for being dumb enough to pay that price as well.
So in Virginia we don't have the market adjustment, but after you negotiate the price. You go in a back room with the finance person and all those extra are then pitched to you. You don't to get them. Also, ask who the companies are that provide the interior and exterior protection. Alot of dealerships will tell you that rock chips are covered,but when you speak to the actual company that is providing the paint correction will tell you different. We learned this with our gladiator and had I read the fine print on the contract, it said it right there, does not covered rock chips or paint chips. Only covered fading and cracking of the paint.
That’s crazy! How the dealers have the courage to sell this cars with a totally crazy prices!
Some of this prices is 20k over the real ones. That’s completely insane. No words about that.

The prices for used cars also went up in the last few months, but prices for new cars only got increased by the carmanufactorers a bit. But these adjustments in the USA are mindblowing. XD
Yeah, here also in Belgium we don't have those markups. We sell cars at (nearly) the same price of what the manufacturer tells to sell them. We can't give a car 10k markup because we are not allowed an to many competitors nearby. Also I would feel bad if we did that. Meanwhile people order a car and wait a year or more to receive it.

One thing about these huge mark-ups is you cannot finance, or lease these mark-ups. On leases it’s normally a small percentage. Financing is the same way. So, you will have to pay that out of pocket.

So I can speak on behalf of the dealership I work for and the dealerships in the surrounding area I work at a Hyundai dealership in Coastal Georgia and we have addendum‘s Appearance and dent protection and tint (total $1757 increase over MSRP) with no additional dealer markup and most dealerships in my surrounding area have no markup other than luxury brands and dodge stores so it hasn’t hit us that bad but inventory is very scarce most lots are running at about 35%-50% Of what they usually have

Toyota Landcruisers are ridiculously popular in Australia now as the borders have been shut for so long. My local Toyota dealer Brighton Toyota have basically turned their showroom floor into a Landcruiser museum to fill the floor space! I swear at one point they had only one (or extremely few) demonstrator vehicles of the new 300 series. A friend of mine works down the road and he's selling cars off the used lot interstate and even internationally. Cars like Landcruiser Troop Carriers
Tbf if you’re willing to wait awhile you can order a new car without a markup here in LA. My cousin just bought a brand new bronco and waited 6 months and got it with zero markup. But all the ones on the lot had a 15k markup.

i mean i can understand that markup now lol. 2025 was what the article said but 100k to get your car now isn’t so bad when you’re already planning on spending 200k on a SUV. especially when you don’t wanna wait 3 years to buy a g wagon.

I live in Kansas and the mark up is just as bad here as well. People have offered ten grand for my old truck because I take care of it. Some of the mark ups that I have seen been what you have found and worse. Some of the work trucks are around 50000 to 80000 mark up. Some of the people I work with are trying to find a new vehicle but it is insane when they see the prices and the amount of money that they are right now.
