1 cup Butter, softened
1-1/2 cups Sugar
2 Eggs
1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
2 Tablespoons Buttermilk or Milk
3 cups All Purpose Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
Pinch of Nutmeg
Pinch of Salt
Cream butter and sugar together well with an electric mixer. Add the eggs and mix well. In a small bowl mix vanilla and milk. In another bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and salt.
With the mixer running on low alternate the milk and vanilla mixture and the dry mixture until incorporated. Don't over mix so your cookies will be tender. Butter a baking sheet and scoop spoonfuls of dough. Roll into balls and press with your fingers. Bake 375 degrees F for 12 to 15 minutes until the edges are golden brown and the centers are still pale. Enjoy with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

You are such a precious heart!
My mother didn't bake. But I always have and love to!
The first time i made tea cakes was almost 40 years ago, when my husband and i were dating. The recipe came from my mother's only cookbook -- "Talk About Good". For years, my husband talked about those cookies and I searched for recipes but none could compare. I now have the cookbook and you've inspired me to go make some! Thank you!
Many, many blessings to you! You're such a ray of sunshine!

My mama died when I was 10, but I remember her making these! Thank goodness for sweet memories!❤
Oh my goodness Vicki girl I'm so very sorry. I'm so glad you can remember her making them. She sounds like she was a wonderful Momma. So glad you have sweet memories of her 💜💜💜💜
My grandmother made these tea cakes. She spoke French and called hers "tee gateau sec." Her Aunt Jemima cookie jar was always full. She used lard produced on the farm Her measuring cup was a certain coffee cup. In my college years, my mother arrived for a visit carrying a little flour sack filled with Mom's gateau sec and the message: "If they aren't as good, I broke my little cup and had to use another one." I will definitely be trying your recipe!
Oh my goodness Gail!! I love this story of your memory. It is precious. Thank you for sharing her French way of saying it. Love that💜 I bet lard from the farm made them especially delicious. John grew up on this farm, and his grandparents made their own lard as well.
My great grand mother made the best teacakes on the woodstove! I can still taste them. My mom made the good old fashioned teacakes.
What a great memory!
I have used self rising flour & it works just fine. I, too, am taken back to my childhood ea time I make these. Wonderful memory ❤ to have as u bake.

But they're just so good with my Lavender Tea ☕😁😉💜💜💜 thank you Girl, for getting this ball rolling 🥰
Hi Amy, I too grew up with Tea Cakes. I have made them all through my 67 years and still make them. I have made the. With self rising flour and to me it makes a dryer cookie. I stick with the all purpose flour, it makes better tasting cookie.

Making your own as a child must have been one of the best experiences 💖.
My mother wouldn’t let us do anything in the kitchen once mealtime and clean up was through.
I love that you are looking at the night sky. I have read the Bible a few times, but I have found that no matter how many times you read it something new will pop out at you once in a while. I somehow had not grasped the fact that in the Bible says that God knows every star by name. When you go outside on a brightly lit Star filled night and look up, it absolutely takes your breath away to know that the God of the universe has named every one of those stars and knows them by name. Is that not awesome??
Psalm 147:4
He counts the number of the stars:
He calls them all by name.
Amen. It is absolutely amazing! 😊💜💜💜💜💜✝️
Yes, God is awesome. Just think of how many billions of stars there are! You may also remember this: Matthew 10:30 and Luke 12:7 tell us that "the very hairs of your head are all numbered." God knows everything about all of his creation! We should feel honored!
Looks delicious 😋 thank you for sharing your recipe with us

☀️ Hello sweet friend! The first time I ate a tea cake was when I was taken under the wings of an amazing couple in my church there in Shreveport. Mama Jo & Poppa Odie. Mama Jo could cook anything!!! She made tea cakes pretty regularly and they were mighty good. Sugar cookies are my favorite cookies anyway. Mama Jo left us in Feb 2010 but I was blessed to spend a week with her, caring for her in Nov 1009. Her daughter probably has her recipes. I also did a quick Google regarding tea cakes. One was from Great Britain created around the 1840’s to serve with tea in the afternoon to stave off hunger until dinner. Poor babies! 😂 I’m hungry now, where’s my tea cake? 😊 Love you, Amy Girl. You have so many people who love you and this old lady in Tennessee loves you like a daughter. 💜💜🙏🏻🙏🏻😘😘
