How do you make your paint so wet? My vallejo paints, if I add water, it just completely makes the paint pigments separate, if I use airbrush thinner or flow improver, same result, I don't understand how you get your paint to cover so well while also staying so wet. I'm also using vallejo and a wet palette

The footage looked to be in real time, and the first layer of red paint stays wet for a good 8-10 minutes and you can easily wet blend in the shadows/highlights. When I lay down a base coat, it seems to dry in about 30-90 seconds? To the point where I have to add drying retarder if I want to try any wet blending 😕
Hi LPJ, thanks for the vid. Learning a lot. But I have an issue, the pre shaded figure seems so sharp. But the brush painting (I like wet blending the best) seems to soften the crispness so much. Too much? Is there any way to prevent that blobby look. No critique on you, you are obviously great at this, top notch work.
Thanks Ytwos1. I understand, I think the danger with wet blending is putting on too thick a layer of paint, reducing the definition of cast resin details. It is much easier on a smaller section, as you can work with less paint without having to worry about drying as much. A workaround could be to pre mix several shades on a wet pallet and work one section of folds/drapery at a time keeping the layers thinner without the worry of having to paint with as much speed. Another technique I haven't tried yet is airbrushing all of the fabric on a figure this would solve the blending and the time however keeping the mixes consistent would be tricky at best. I usually tend to on smaller figures go for layers as it keeps those paint layers thin. Another option would be oils or enamels. @smallsoldier here on youtube did a recent Rommel bust using oils and the result was fantastic. It looks like it may be something I might have to play with when it comes to larger figures again in the future. Sorry If I rambled on a bit but I hope some of the info might help at least a bit ! Yul Brenner, "The King and I." Great work. I was thinking though, it's a shame that you won't be working the bust in black and white. The blending of your primers is sublime, especially on the crown of the head!
While I appreciate the technique that you've demonstrated here and that this a personal preference, I think that handling the painting of figures is much more easily done with oil paints. It's a far less fussy process and I find the flexibility with colour creation and application to be a lot superior to acrylic wet blending. I'm wondering why you didn't start with the face and then work down to the torso? Wouldn't that be easier in terms of holding the subject?
As the bust was just used for demo purposes here I was just doing some blending. While oil paints are great, I won't use them for figures, the drying time is such a mojo sapper for me. When I made this video years ago someone asked how to blend with acrylics so I shared my method. Colour is colour whatever medium you use though so I have to disagree there,.
Hi Tomas, it is a home made "wet palette" there is a resovoir of water contained in blotting paper, and a membrane paper let's the water seep through to the acrylic colours on top, keeping them wet.
Looks like a great method for shading and highlighting... but what are these acrylics that stay wet so long? I use retarder.. and by the time I reach to the palette to get some more paint.. the last layer of paint on the figure is already dry :)
Still don't understand how your acrylics stay wet so long on the figure. I tried everything to achive this, wet palette, retarder, glaze medium, destilled water... but no way, my thin applied acrylics are to dry within 10 Seconds, to paint wet in wet.
@@76erMC where are you based ? It's usually cold in my house keeping the paint a little bit more workable for longer. The layers on this aren't particularly thin mind, pretty much slapped on for wet blending

He's most likely using paint retarder, my game color paints dry in a few seconds with just water.

Thanks Josh, I dont remeber if I used a retarder or just lots of thin paint, it's usually less than 20°c here so I have some wiggle room .

Do you suggest thinning the paint for the basecoat?
Yes usually I thin the paint even if it's a little bit.

Thankyou @general Splatoon ! Good old Yul Brenner ! The blending on the black and white is done with airbrush to give me an idea on shading later on !

Hisham thankyou! The key is a wet pallet. And to make sure the reservoir paper is quite moist. It doesn't work as well on hot days.
