^Yeah, well like Brian mentioned a lot of new things have kinks they have to work out early on. I think that (along with many of the other issues) is something they could've addressed/corrected had they not done the whole us vs the NFL thing.
You are both correct. My theory is they had too lofty expectations. Instead of trying to compete with the NFL, they should have thought on a smaller scale. I was thinking they should have had more local emphasis with local teams televised on local channels with local announcers. Perhaps WWE stars could have popped in from time to time to chat with the crew. At first we could have enjoyed these the way we enjoy Arena football or a minor league baseball team.
Glad to see how XFL changed from then to now. No more gimmicks, no more force-feeding Vince’s main property, just pure football for the love of football. Go Wildcats🦁
Exactly, I realized that looking at back then in this video and looking at it now its night and day. Back then they wanted to be 50% WWF now WWE, and oh yeah here's that football thing we said we'd play. Now they have actual announcers and sideline reporters with actual knowledge of the game, and a few rules tweaked to help the competition and the on-field product looks way better now that the teams had time to form and practice and gel

Currently it’s April 29 2020. The XFL existed for a few weeks, and it was pretty good, a lot of players had a ton of motivation to get into the NFL. The XFL shut down a few weeks ago, it wasn’t top tier talent but it was fun to watch. Ultimately, the XFL wasn’t poorly run like the AAF and it wasn’t squashed, a fucking global pandemic destroyed what could’ve been a lot of fun for football fans in the long offseason.
Yeah, if XFL was good, he would bought UFC and let's say a big football (or soccer for Americans) club in Europe, he would be propably the biggest person in sport today. Jeez, what a crazy world would it be. In case of too less teams I think if XFL was a success, than season after season more teams would be added to the league
CM Punk always says Vince is a millionaire that could be a billionaire. Definitely many wasted opportunities. But then again, I don't think Vince could have ran the XFL all that well, it was pretty much doomed to fail.
+Shockfactor22 Actually, setting up with 8 teams is a good idea. It would have costed more money to have more teams and more players. When these spring leagues start up, they always setup with small amount of teams to keep their head above water when it comes to finances. Most recently I've noticed with this recent wave of spring football leagues, they'll also avoid putting teams in California as well because of its high worker's compensation.
"WHERE'S MY FOOTBALL?" You could've went to the Arena Football League, it's without the NFL rules but following the basics, has half the yards and is more smashmouth.
My mom and dad are two honest to goodness American Football fans, and I've asked them about the XFL before and they always said they loved the sport and they watched that whole season. They got a kick out of the jerseys and my dad especially is an old school football fan so he loved the insane action like the scramble and the no fair catch rule
I'm here because my friend who introduced me to this channel, thus playing a part in winning me over to wrestling, told me that Vince decided to bring XFL back.
The XFL reminds me a lot of this video game I like, BLITZ The League 2, which was basically if the XFL had a video game. It was a football game developed by Midway games with over the top hits, injuries, taunts, everything the XFL was trying to be, and I wouldn't be surprised if the XFL inspired that game.
Looking at the XFL now, Vince and co. looks like they learned from the mistakes of the first iteration, the downfall of the AAF and how the Arena Football League became obsolete. Week one is over and did really good.
Given ESPN and WWE's sudden cozy relationship in the last few years this won't be a bash job like Small Potatoes was towards Trump. Wonder how that makes Bob Ley feel, since he bashed the hell out of the league at the time.
Can someone explain why there was such a need for Pro Football at the time? Vince made it seem like NFL has gone soft in early 2000's but that's news to me. It looks like nothing compared to how soft it has become TODAY.
It was more for Vince, whose offer to buy the CFL (which in truth was dangerously close to going under in the mid 90s) was rejected, and NBC, who had just lost the NFL and their piece of the MLB contract. Proof that it was never really about the product is that Vince ended up back on NBC anyway (beginning the road to mega TV deals) and the same year NBC got the NFL back anyway.
I would have loved to see the XFL stick around to give that 3% of college players that aren't drafted by or able to walk on to an NFL or CFL roster a chance to play. A spring football league that draws maybe 30-40K fans a game and gets decent ratings, most importantly a league that allows potential future blue chippers time to develop. Look how Kurt Warner was third on the depth chart in Green Bay in 1991/92, went to the Arena League, where he worked on his timing, then NFL Europe, and by 1999 he was a NFL MVP/Super Bowl Champion (41 TD, 4,000+ yards). The NFL showed the XFL stats of players like Rod Smart and Tommy Maddox the next season, which to me gave legitimacy to the XFL. If Vince would have reached out to the NFL, they would have embraced the XFL as a second chance bastion for cast off NFL players and that third percent of college players to participate in pro football.
I remember Michael Cole telling wrestling fans to contact their local newspapers and demanding that they start covering the XFL in the sports sections, yeah like that was ever going to happen.
Yes, but they were in WWF personas. That’s why it was a bad idea to have them appear in the middle of football games. Even if there were football fans who were also WWF fans, they just want to watch football. Not a crossover with wrestling. Then it just looks like a joke. That’s why NFL fans/media mocked the original XFL.
Interesting note, The XFL was showcased in the sci-fi movie, The 6th Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, where it was highly successful on par with the NFL. Funny how that's the most unrealistic thing about the movie.
I'm laughing so hard, right now. Following the "he knew what he had to do to bring the fans back" line, I exclaimed "titties,' then KIAF did the same. I don't know how something so minor could make me laugh this much, but thank you for making this day a little better.
So basically, if Vince didnt make the mistakes, and if the XFL was still around, I might actually like football rn. Thats what I feel this video is kinda telling me.
I feel like It would have been somewhat successful if Vince did everything right and flushed the kinks, but not to far down the line Vince would go too far and screw it up some how.
Str8 Krillin it Agreed. You know for all of the shit we give Dixie, at least she can say she gave an alternative to the mainstream version of something and lasted longer than a year while doing it. Dixie gave us TNA and its lasted a few years, Vince gave us the XFL and blew it in 1 season😂
Austin played at North Texas (then North Texas State), as did David and Kevin Von Erich years before him, in fact Bill Mercer was their radio announcer
I wonder what would've happened had they tried it now and not 15 years ago. I say this because people have been more and more open about an alternative to the NFL.
Don't know if it was on purpose, but if it was, nice subtle touch showing Reigns on the cup when you said "So, let's see how they screwed this one up" at 4:51
Lovely Luna "potentially" Actually, I do kind of wish McMahon good luck in his future endeavours. He may be a hopeless egomaniacal solipsist (whose grapefruits produced an even worse one) whose one and only true love is the almighty dollar... but I can't help but respect and, in a way, cheer on his larger-than-life sense of PT Barnum-esque entrepreneurial chancery.
At 6:23, XFL sounded like russo's tna, bitching and moaning about the more successful version of their product which reminds you that you aren't watching the better product. Hilarious to think Vince was in a "clear #2" position
I like how you’re reviewing this side by side with the Know it all fan, because it makes it more like Nostalgia Critic’s “First Viewing” videos he does with his brother, Rob, or Game Grumps.
“Quality of play had improved...” 14:24 dat interception... Just looking at that throw hurts my shoulder. Dear god. And people complained about Tebow’s mechanics.
Cut to three years later and in a real way, Jennifer Lopez is one of the most talked about celebrities in the country, and the XFL ... may not suck? As bitter as I am that the spring league that has a chance to keep functioning is the one that DOESN'T have a team in O-town...
The worst part was that they only had 4 1/2 week to practice. As a former (high school ) football player, you need a lot more time to gel as a team than that. If they were given another year to practice and bond, that first season would have been better, at least good enough to merit a second.
As a non football fan, I watched part of the first XFL game back in the day and thought it looked like any ordinary football game. I didn't see any differences that a hardcore football fan would've saw. But after watching the XFL documentary, I was like "Man! Such a damn shame they didn't succeed!" All that potential the league had to be an edgy alternative to the NFL! But realistically, it wasn't possible.
Did you notice in a lot of videos we hear "taking time off from his other job as the governor of Minnesota" and as a Minnesotan I can tell you we wish he would've stayed away longer.

The XFL was showcased in the sci-fi movie, The 6th Day, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, where it was highly successful on par with the NFL. Funny how that's the most unrealistic thing about the movie.
Was that the one where Arnold faces off against a clone of himself?
I'm laughing so hard, right now. Following the "he knew what he had to do to bring the fans back" line, I exclaimed "titties,' then KIAF did the same. I don't know how something so minor could make me laugh this much, but thank you for making this day a little better.
Since it's valentines month. Can you do Top 8 worst romantic storylines.
This is legit the only channel I LIKE always. The content is more than worth it.
Yeah but TNA exists the same way the current model of the Arena Football League does, technically yes, but *really*?
MGB Arena Football? I havent heard of that one before:/
Robert Lewis there was mistakes made on both ends just not vince
I think this video said it well. I don't even need to watch the 30 for 30
At least the Rock actually played football in college.
Examper Austin too, or at least in high school, haha.
Austin played at North Texas (then North Texas State), as did David and Kevin Von Erich years before him, in fact Bill Mercer was their radio announcer
The Rock played for the University of Miami
For example Goldberg and Brock Lesnar used to play football in the NFL
@@ShakShak1999 not brock wth
In 2001, I watched the first game, ignored the rest.
In 2020: I watched the first game, ignored the rest.
I wonder what would've happened had they tried it now and not 15 years ago. I say this because people have been more and more open about an alternative to the NFL.
Don't know if it was on purpose, but if it was, nice subtle touch showing Reigns on the cup when you said "So, let's see how they screwed this one up" at 4:51
Jesse Ventura's quote to Vince McMahon said it all!
Good timing. Not only is it the Super Bowl this week, but tonight ESPN is showing their 30 for 30 on the XFL.
Just googled "Birmingham Blast"
Oh no....
Followed you since 2014, love your channel and have literally been waiting for this since then!
The XFL IS making a comeback in January! This is not a joke!
It might still potentially become one.
Dr170 XFL hasn't happened yet. And you're being negative about it.
Lovely Luna "potentially"
Actually, I do kind of wish McMahon good luck in his future endeavours. He may be a hopeless egomaniacal solipsist (whose grapefruits produced an even worse one) whose one and only true love is the almighty dollar... but I can't help but respect and, in a way, cheer on his larger-than-life sense of PT Barnum-esque entrepreneurial chancery.
@@Dr170 Please tell me you're not referring to Shane.
At 6:23, XFL sounded like russo's tna, bitching and moaning about the more successful version of their product which reminds you that you aren't watching the better product. Hilarious to think Vince was in a "clear #2" position
I'd like to see you do a video on Corporate Kane in the future
You do a video on Corporate Kane instead.
Danimal I would but my computer monitor and microphone are broken at the moment
Dude, I think I speak for all when I say that I love the knowledgeable fan, you should totally put him in more of your videos!
I love the Know It All Fan 😃
He's easily the best of all the guests Brian brings on.
*rewatches this to see how relevant it is now*
*looks at Calander* 2020...its like nothing has changed
XFL stands for Extra Fun League
I like how you’re reviewing this side by side with the Know it all fan, because it makes it more like Nostalgia Critic’s “First Viewing” videos he does with his brother, Rob, or Game Grumps.
“Quality of play had improved...”
14:24 dat interception...
Just looking at that throw hurts my shoulder. Dear god. And people complained about Tebow’s mechanics.
that "NNOOOOOOOOOO !" was solid gold.
getting it in before the espn 30 for 30 doc on this tonight
Cut to three years later and in a real way, Jennifer Lopez is one of the most talked about celebrities in the country, and the XFL ... may not suck? As bitter as I am that the spring league that has a chance to keep functioning is the one that DOESN'T have a team in O-town...
5:17 That aged so well considering recent times.
Honestly though, Rugby League and Rugby Union are both very good sports
Who just came here after the XFL reborn announcement?
Can't wait for this video's sequel.
Who’s back after finding out that Vince is restarting the XFL in 2017/18?!
Rex Ablett yes sir
2020 actually. I saw the news at the bottom line thing on ESPN a few days ago, and I was internally screaming with joy and insanity.
4:00 in, both of yalls acting is superb. Seriously had me laughing 😂
Nice use of Richard Cheese!
13:15 that locked door bump is perfection
Watching this makes me miss the hell out of the XFL
Will there be a review about Zach Gowen?
How Ironic I watch this cause as announced today the XFL will be making a comeback in 2020.
Just became a subscriber a couple of weeks ago and now can’t stop watching. Keep up the good work!!
"IWC?... Well, makes sense."
xD
04:37: ...Must resist...must...resist...must..resist......................
HEDIDITFORTHEROCK.
So when are you going to make a video about the XFL 2.0?
Unofficial MVP PJ Walker
"That was a scary couple of years" well prepared to be scared again after last night
The worst part was that they only had 4 1/2 week to practice. As a former (high school ) football player, you need a lot more time to gel as a team than that. If they were given another year to practice and bond, that first season would have been better, at least good enough to merit a second.
If the Vince and the cameraman segment was on a 2001 Raw it could’ve maybe been funny
Vince killed his own product. The only thing I can say is the team I liked won the big game hahahahaha.
This is me with the 2022-2023 season of the xfl I hardly watched it but hey the regenades won the big game since I live in the DFW
Man, that last phrase was pure gold xD
the black guy is really annoying, can you stop having him on.
Nic Winstead Art hey I thought he was great in the Eugene review
TJDawgieStyle when's he been on before?
Jack McMorrow he was a character in another episode where he talks about Eugene
Nic Winstead Art Yeah... he needs an italian guy, or an asian. lol
RandalfElVikingo bring his wife or j biggs, what was the Birmingham boom joke?
And in 2020 Jlo is in the Super Bowl and the XFL is back
I remember vince like " I turned on the sports channel it it had Figure skating..Where's my Football??!"
Holy hell have I been waiting for this since subscribing to your channel. Time to get the popcorn!
They should put the XFL into the Network, I mean it is their property after all.
the IWC punch at the end killed me! GREAT JOB
