    As @boom-stick mentioned, the more expensive rails is what's called "sliding rails", where the cheaper ones (same as the ones you have) are called friction rails.
    Another thing to keep an eye on, is whether the rails are for Gen8 or Gen9, both rails fit both servers, but the cable management arm attachment is different, and thus Gen9 CMA only fits Gen9 rails.

      I can see why HPE servers need really good rails :-P
      But I must admit that sliding rails with maybe ball bearings,, is probably overkill for most servers,,, it is meant to go in, and x years later,, go out.

    I think the more expensive rack rails for the HP servers on Bargain Hardware work more like the Lenovio / IBM ones you mentioned. I have a set that look the same for my DL380p Gen 8. The rails have aan inner sliding rail on bearings (fixed, does not pull out) where the four lugs on either side of the server chassis locate and lock into the rail from slots in the top of the sliding part. Much easier to work with

    The thing you were talking about at the start (removing the little metal bracket to use shorter rails on longer servers) DOES work... As long as you're using ball bearing rails. Friction rails like you're using don't really work properly without that little bracket there. You can still do it, but when sliding the server in to the tack you need to be careful to make sure that the inner rail (the part attached to the server) goes fully in before the outer rail (the part attached to the rack) begins to move. With ball bearing rails you don't need to do this and you can just shove the server in to the rack like normal.

      It would be really bad if the server got stuck in there :-/

    Really useful thank you. I have some rails which fit a 360 Gen9 but I think they would fit a 560 Gen 8 if it wasn't for the little "peg" on the server that is the one that is LOCKED when the rail is slid into position. Everything else seems to line up.
    Anyway, really useful video (thank you), as having never installed these rails before I admit to being a little confused as to how the outer rails lock in place.

    yeah those rails can be a bit of a pain. i actually had too long of rails for my rack, had to cut off a few inches to get it to mount.

    the Gen8, 9, 10 LFF rails work for SFF too just not the other way. I pull the rails out when installing servers that slide in like that, I usually pull one further than the other so I can get one side in at a time.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому +1

      Okay,, Cool so ger LFF, and they work on both.

    I wish you all the best, but am relieved that it's not just me fighting with rails. I bought a nice rack and during install found out that servers are longer 😂😂😂😂

      It can be really fidelity,, if there is not enough space, or the server is very heavy,, or expensive :-)

      If you are happy to have no rear door (or rack is already open backed), you can always use the generic "L" shaped rails and just let the server hang out the back a little. Not suitable for a data centre, not usually too much of an issue for a home install perhaps - especially if you only see the front 99% of the time.

    I always go with a stupid rack shelves (like that for heavy ups battery packs) and just slide servers in with a little fiddling and force. They are also not cheap, but when I change servers, I don't have to buy new rails everytime.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому

      That is an option,, never thought of that..

    I've got the HPE DL20 GEN 9 in my rack and i noticed i think I've got the LFF rack mounts for mine... Of course my server is a very short server but why the need for such long rack mounts is beyond me...

    I hate the rails that have the part that attaches to the server, almost all supermicro server are like that.
    Dell had a great system with the pins on the side of the server and slots in the rails, just have to align the rear pins and then the rest drop in pretty easily.
    Rails that can be installed single handed with one person are great when working alone in a datacenter, dont have to run around the rows from from to back to attach rails

      I think there are good and bad things with most brands rack rails,, it is not as if IBM/Lenovo rails is just the best,, they make lousy rails as well.

    • @tt2468

      Dell 100% has the best rails with their higher end models. Those heavy duty pegs where you drop the server into the rails from the top. Makes installation so much easier.
