So many surfers focus on the next best move, buying a new board, finding the best wave, yet fail to do this one thing that could change EVERYTHING ️
The pressure in wave pools is so much greater. You have 50mins, you are surfing in front of other people, you have (in UK) 2 waves before you have to get out of the way. So mind is a massive factor. You really have to let go to perform well.
My 2 experiences at Bristol WP were so different! 1st time was in front of friends who absolutely rip, to advanc a wave for my skill level. It was crushing! Not fun at all!
2nd time I went alone and booked a more manageable level and I had an amazing experience!! Lesson learned! 😅
Thank you for another pearl of wisdom. I understand what you are saying as... Don't try to balance on your surfboard. Instead try to go with the vector of the wave (it''s force). It is that vector that will keep you moving without falling. To do so, we must be able to let go of tension so that we can absorb information about the wave through our feet and react accordingly.
"Balance comes from speed." - Golden nugget alert!
“Elbows up” is a great cue - helps straighten the back and counteracts my pelvic tilt issues without thinking too much. Interested in hearing about Clayton’s America trip - fun waves in Florida now that hurricane season is here.
Chin up, head over front foot, elbows up and coffee cup. Oh f*ck I’ve got lot of bad habits.
Thank you for your lessons, I’m really motivated whit your videos.
This video is just pure GOLD!!!!! Thank you both :)
It's just a random idea for a live... I'd love to hear your advice on developing your paddle strength, fitness, and basics skills while being a landlocked surfer. I currently live 100 miles from any reasonable surf spots here in the UK and the same from the Bristol Wave. I'm trying my best to get as many trips to the sea/wave as possible, but I would love to hear any wisdom on this subject. Along with the fitness, surfskate (ombe techniques), I'm trying to build my knowledge around ready forecasts, swells, and best conditions for different spots as it always a hit and miss on surf conditions. Stay awesome y'all and stay stoked🌺🤙
Swimming will give you stamina but you need to arch you back to paddle and balance on a board
Currently I'm doing a daily workout involving a few things I've picked up to improve upper and lower back. Also adapted a resistance band setup so I can lay in a good paddle posture and practice paddling. I've also been working on a balance board and surfskate. I'm hoping this will all help in the long term, but I appreciate that there is no time like real surf experience. Another idea I'd had for the guys to cover on a live was discussing the skills that a wave pool lacks when trying to navigate the sea. Thanks for the reply, and keep the lives coming. Truly appreciate what you guys are doing. 🌺🤙 Happy surfing!
Brilliant content. So helpful. Thanks clay and ant
6:44 this part talks to me sooo much. Thèse last years I feel disconnected to the waves.
If you play other sports at all, this position is very familiar. There are variations for a lot of sports
Iin tennis, it’s the split stance. Skiing and snowboarding, very similar. Baseball, the hitting or fielding stance. Basketball dribbling or guarding.
The key is to keep your head up, and your eyes level. That not only gives you the flexibility to move your weight around, it puts you in the best position to find your balance. Remember, your inner ear canals are what determines your balance. They are in your head, of course. So you have to get your head level, your knees driving into the wave. Bend at the knees more and you’ll drive your knees into the wave face and you’ll turn toe side down the line. Stand up and you’ll lift your weight and you can do a backside turn. (Of course you have to be on the right part of the wave too, and look where you want to go.)
You should coach and share that knowledge. On point
Keep up the great work guys, love your coaching videos as you explain things with commonsense for us to easily understand.
Have a great to trip to NZ Ant.
Is it a surf trip?
Another great live
Thanks again guys
Thanks guy for all the content you put my surf to another level
standing up too tall, even with speed isn't always an option, especially in the ocean in locations where there is a lot of wind. Due to timezone i can't surf mornings when it's calm, only afternoons and sunsets which means almost everyday i'm surfing in 24-30km/h winds which means bumpy faces.
Taking off on an overhead bumpy waves without bending your knees drastically you'll get bounced right off the board.
Been riding quads and twins on pretty subpar waves got addicted to the speed . When the waves got really gd went to thruster it felt so slow and didn’t surf gd at all any suggestions?
The spray work on those boards is most impressive.
BTW I believe surfing is riding waves and standing up comes after. If you don't like riding waves you should buy a motorcycle.
Nice maybe eyes again be a big help looking fwd to where u want to go
Crabs don't have much trouble walking sideways. ....🦀
They also have more legs
@@ombesurf I was joking. I was also enjoying the banter and the awkward poses. 😄👍
I hope you do a few collabs with Raglan surf report while ya in New Zeland..)
To me andy Irons and Clay Marzo are great examples of this

Interesting vid with good content. Just some feedback... the guy on the right seems to be trying too hard to manage the conversation and the stream, is too distracted, and it doesn't feel like he's really in the conversation and listening... Therefore not helping the dude with the knowledge share that knowledge... Chemistry seems off because of this.
Should call them learners until they can actually surf, might be an incentive
wow those people surfing in the beggining of the video really suck
We all suck at the start the problem is those people have overestimated their abilities and are surfing a wave probably too advanced for them. Looks like cruiser setting and these guys might need a bit more time on the bay.
