The analogy of a beginner turning like a car vs turning like a motorcycle is perfect i recent started engaging my rails and that is spot on!!!

Something else i found as a beginner/intermediate is when i first started going on rail properly you feel like your gonna fall but you need to trust the process and realise the speed will carry you through. I see a lot of other beginners freak out when they are on rail and they bail.

Enjoyed this episode. Good nuggets. I surf fast small lefts at a beach break and I’m regular so I’m always on my backhand on these small semi close out punchy lefts. And it’s been a real struggle for me learning how to pump on my backhand. Finally starting to figure it out and it’s all in the placements of the hands (throwing the arms) and being on rail and staying high on wave face.

Can't wait to work on this in the ocean!! These fine details are obvious now, but I have been watching surfing for years and never been able to pick this up, so good.

Great subject. A lot of intermediate surfers get stuck on how to use rails to surf. Me as well.

Great video and great explanations! A lot of this sounds also natural for snowboarding (leaning forward to go down, carving on your edges vs. going flat vs. turning the board with you back foot to break, etc.). Still so much harder on a surfboard to progress - probably because effective surfing time is so short compared to snowboarding.

Wonderful, guys. This is so helpful. My coach literally told me the same things about my hands today now that I'm trying cutbacks @29:29.

I remember the first time I drop in a wave in the right position, with a shortboard, I tried to lean sideways, and the board got on rails (not me) turned aiming to the top of the way like a rocket, and I just felt backwards the way you were describing at 36:45 I almost haven't surfed since then (it was like 5 years ago) and all I want is try it again an complete that bottom turn

At some point they talk about having an epiphany in the water. This has happened to me many times in the past. I’ve been surfing for over 30 years, peaking in my late 20’s and early thirties. Then I stopped surfing for about 7 years due to an accident. Now I have glimpses of how those epiphany moments felt back in the day, but I can’t quite get there. I see sections in the wave where I would have normally hit the lip or generate speed, but I just can’t get there in time. I understand age plays a role, but I feel it’s a matter of reading the wave. It’s like I’m relearning to surf every day. I guess that’s the mystery of surfing, it’s such a challenge.

Describing surfing to someone that’s never surfed , is like trying to describe a color to a blind person.

On the subject of holding the turn on a cuttie, would keeping looking at the foam until it makes contact with the board be a helpful marker/trigger?

    Hey guys...nice videos.
I was actually wondering if you knew how to steer a foamy in heavy white water and what the mechanics of that would be?
My home break is the bore tide here in Alaska which can have tons of white water (even overhead white water lol).
    Thanks

Could it be that a snowboarder gets that feeling of “surfing rail” and what it should feel like, a bit quicker?

All the energy is as close to the top as you can handle 😅
Anyone on the inside of a wave you've caught before them is not entitled to the wave.

The guy in grey on the left was spitting out gold, but to guy on the right just kept interrupting and didn’t LISTEN to what is said, then you can see he’s just thinking about what He’s going to interrupt with next. I got so much out of this video, even though he missed it.

You will learn a lot more if you let the coach speak. You speak all over him. Here is a question for you. If two people are talking who is listening? Try to let him finish speaking before you start talking. This must be so frustrating for him. It's even frustrating for me to watch.
