- A number of iconic Nazi-era buildings still stand in Berlin today; the Olympic stadium where Hitler gave his fiery speeches is now home of the Hertha Berlin football team.
They’ve been preserved and repurposed in a conscious effort to keep Germany’s history alive and honour the debate they inspire about guilt and memory of the Nazi era.
Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane reports from Berlin, Germany.

It's a fantastic stadium. Germans should be allowed to have pride in their technical and engineering triumphs of that era, without the negative connotations to the people's ideology who may have built such things. The stadium is no different from a VW Beetle or Messerschmitt 109.

That stadium is still in perfect condition after over 80 years and they say it wouldn’t last long build it today it would cost billions and would fall apart in 10 years even with modest upkeep because nothing is made like it was back then

I’m suprised that’s it’s in stable condition and it’s older than the Oakland Coliseum where the Raiders use to play which was build in the late 1960’s. Also, that place is not in the best conditions.

Michael T It is a professional sports team's stadium, now. The actual Olympics needs more stadiums, now. The games are too big to host in a single location, so it would likely share the load.

The Prussian Eagle(or black eagle) has been a national emblem of German military since the foundation of Prussia, in other words, it doesn't have anything to do with the Nazis even if they built it. So unless if the Nazis put a massive swatzika over the stadium then there is no reason to remove it
There were no Nazis and Nazism in Germany. System which existed in Germany between 1933-1945 was National- Socialist system. Party in power was Nation-Socialist German Workers Party. One can't expect objective information about that period of German history coming from those, who hated Germany and German people. Germany never will become free and great power it use to be.

The eagle is awesome, it’s just a structure. All ancient countries have numerous relics of previous empires, none who come with chocolates and flowers but ultimately have enriched the places in many ways.

The Germans got it right. In the US, people are all too eager to smash statues of confederate soldiers. It is understandable that they fought to protect slavery. However, like the Germans, the US should use these artifacts to learn from the past to prevent mistakes in the future. One idea is to move the statues from government buildings to museums.

A statue is different than a building. A statue only exists to make a statement and when that statement was originally built on white supremacy (which the confederate statues were) it should be torn down. Buildings meanwhile often have other purposes and what they mean can change when that purpose evolves. For example the Pentagon was built during segregation and had segregated restrooms, but the institution it houses has evolved over time and the segregated restrooms are an architectural artifact. Similarly the Eiffel Towers meaning has changed over the past century and went from being considered a gaudy eyesore to being the symbol of France. The Germans deliberately tore down their statues (as they should have) and the US should do the same to those built by the daughters of the confederacy

We would be able to see something built about 160 years ago, in the flesh, and for something that has been up for that long, it would be a shame to take it down. I don't support the CSA or anyone who supports it, but its history, and we should be able to learn about it, in every way, which includes seeing statues. If you think about it, it's just stone, it won't hurt anyone.

I lived in Berlin during the Cold War not far from the Berlin Wall. The architecture all around Germany was amazing but also the fact that the German's understand that leaving these structures in place are there as a reminder to what must NOT be done again. If we continue to erase history...it won't be long before history is repeated.

These are usable buildings. No need to destroy them. It is also important to remember our history, as long as it is not a clearly racist structure which makes people significantly uncomfortable.

For example, many government and military buildings show elements of classic Roman and Greek architecture expressing the strength, determination, glory, and unity of the people. 1930's German buildings were similar. Granted, many designs were too Spartan, appearing cold and non-inclusive. However, much Third Reich architecture conveys a deep sense of national pride, power, prestige, and purpose. It was only after WW2 that the Allies demonized all of it based on their own mission of propaganda and political agenda.
