None of this was from part 2.... this was actually from the DLC... so the game came out in 2013 and this DLC was released in 2014 ... called "Left Behind." I honestly think that this was very important to include the DLC for a multitude of reasons (especially since they can't do a DLC for the TV show - laugh) ... but at this part in the TV series, we have seen how a lot of different people deal with infected, losing loved ones, etc. Since we know Ellie is immune and it doesn't take very long to turn into an infected and that the runners are very violent... and they have a gun ... and Ellie has had to hurt someone before... BUT in the present story line, she is afraid of being alone... Joel is afraid of losing another "daughter" ... Joel and ellie have the same trauma, they have the same fear, they are the same person. Joel becomes a "zombie" when his daughter dies... dead inside, shambling through his existence... Ellie is the zombie cure for the world, but in the show she is also the cure for Joel being a zombie (she brings him back to life, love, being a dad, etc). The point though is what is Joel to Ellie. (What was henry to sam, what was Kathleen's brother michael to Kathleen, what was Bill to frank, what is Maria to tommy)... all of the relationships in the story mirror Joel and Ellie. The zombie metaphor is that all humans have the capacity to be monsters (Kansas City FEDRA and Resistance both choosing to be monsters) BUT it is the people we love that make us choose not to be monsters (but when we lose them... of they hurt us... the monster returns) Riley fought for Ellie before she left, she was older, etc... she was Ellie's first Joel (since Ellie is an orphan she never had a protector/father before Riley, and now she has joel... that is pretty clear in episode 6) but this is all building up to what I am guessing happens next week (no spoilers... I did play the games so...)

Technically I think the Ellie and Riley section of the game is actually shorter than this since it’s mixed in with the other part with Ellie trying to get a first aid kit to stitch up joel so I don’t think it’s that surprising they could do it in 1 episode. It was really beautiful though and Bella and Storm did an incredible job in this and I never want to hear people complain about Bella as Ellie ever again 😭
@@clover2739 that is true ^^ I honestly had forgotten about that section xD to me what stands out about the DLC is the time in the mall But yeah, the raiders are indeed not in this when it comes to the first aid, but I think that's because they want to reserve that for next episode with Ellie meeting David & Co
@@blinkachu5275 I mean in both sections of the dlc ellie is in a mall but yeah I get what you’re saying. Was watching this with my friend who hadn’t played the game. He noticed the chemistry between Riley and Ellie early on and kept pointing out the scenes that reaffirmed that they had feelings for each other. It's also important to remember that Marlene placed Ellie in the Federa orphanage/school on purpose to protect her. So, when Riley said that she asked the Fireflies if Ellie could go to ATL with her, they said no. They/Marlene had some sort of plan for Ellie before her getting bitten and being immune. I speculate that once Ellie became a soldier/officer, Marlene would have approached Ellie and try to get Ellie to be the inside man.

Pretty spot on episode of the Left Behind DLC. The implication here is heavier than what happens in my opinion. When only one survives, the other had to fend off their friend, it really makes Ellie’s moment after shooting the guy in KC a lot heavier when she tells Joel he wasn’t the first person she killed.
It also recontextualizes that scene where after Ellie tells Joel about her 'friend' who loved Mortal Kombat II she discovers a trapped infected in the basement and ends up killing it. You understand now, why she kept that moment to herself. Why she had anger & hatred in her expression when she stabbed it like she did. And where she did (in the head because she found out that was most effective at the mall). All of that pent up rage and grief needed somewhere to go. That trapped stalker was a symbol of everything she'd lost.
@@annemoore3590you’re the only person I’ve seen make the connection that Ellie stabbed that infected so angrily because she was, in her own way, getting revenge for Riley. I think that’s absolutely the intended implication.
As was mentioned by the showrunners in the HBO podcast for the show, they’ve been very careful to never paint a faction as only good or bad. Really enjoyed seeing that FEDRA officer having a very kind and parent like interaction with Ellie
This episode was sad in such a different way. Two kids are fully aware of their inevitable horrible doom. Ellie’s rage & Riley’s despair… it was depressing in a scary way. And all it took was a single infected to completely turn their world upside down. This episode/original story was so well done.
Another banger. Some clarification for Dave, the episode isn't part of TLoU: Part 2 but DLC for the first game. The episode title is called "Left Behind" because it's the name of the DLC expansion featuring Riley and Ellie.
I think this episode is pretty vital for the story. As said in this video, it shows that Ellie has suffered a deep loss as well. By staying to help patch Joel up and I'm going to assume help him recover as I doubt Joel will just be back up on his feet immediately, she's putting her own life on the line to save his, and this gives more insight on to why she's not willing to lose someone again. This episode is also the perfect embodiment of what Hitchcock once said about building suspense. He talks about showing a bomb under a table that two people are sitting and having a conversation at, who are unaware of the bomb. If you don't show the bomb and just have it blow up, it's shocking but you then miss out on the suspense of as the audience counting down in your head to when that bomb is going to go off. We know going into this story that Ellie gets bit in the Mall, and then we later get to see the infected waking up. It really puts you on the edge of your seat as you know what's coming. It's so well done in this episode.
As for Mason's comments on "You can't fight everyone", I think this is more a reference to Ellie as a character (basically how she is in the game as well). She's very easily riled up and will retaliate towards the people that do her or people she cares for injustice.
The carousel song sounds like Just like Heaven by the Cure. Loved this episode. We definitely needed Ellie backstory. Still super stressed about Joel, poor guys in the same state we left him in last time.
The song on the Merry-Go-Round is Just Like Heaven by The Cure and the one Ellie was listening to in the beginning of the show was All or None by Pearl jam. Also, they were dancing to an Etta James cover of I've Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher which was in the game version of that scene.
This episode made me cry the same way episode 3 did 😢 maybe more because of how Ellie and Riley’s friendship reminded me so much of the fun times I had with my best friends growing up (minus the infected/apocalypse). They were adorable ❤
I think Ellie has been given A or B her whole life. She is now fighting for C. Everyone thinks it’s a simple fork in the road, but for Ellie, she wants to blaze her own trail, and forge a life where she can be happy with someone she loves. Ellie went back to Joel because she took Riley’s advice and is choosing what is important for her and fighting for it. Love it. Thanks for the upload guys.
The merry go round song is The Cure's Just Like Heaven. 😬 one of my favorite bands, I recognized it immediately! They didn't show it and they don't explicitly say it in the game, but Riley is 100% most likely the first "person" Ellie had to kill. That's why she didn't wanna talk about it with Joel.
Bella did such an amazing job in this. The way she did the clandestine peaks at Riley on the carousel, the insecurity with the window reflection scene, the change in voice when she begs Riley to stay, the fact that you can CLEARLY see what she's feeling before she takes off the wolf mask despite wearing the mask. Now I know why they picked an older actress to play Ellie. Brilliant casting choice.
this episode was a deeply sad but hopeful one. i like how riley’s words after they got bit motivated ellie to try to save joel😭 she couldn’t save riley from that horrible destiny but she knew there was a chance to save him, ellie can’t lose the other most important person in her life
"It's over." "It will be... but not yet. It ends this way for everyone sooner or later, right? Some of us just get there faster than others. But we don't quit. Whether... it's two minutes... or two days... we don't give that up." I wonder if there is an episode I won't be teary eyed... Knowing the 'baby girl' that is coming and the ending, I guess there won't be.... Great reaction again, guys

Apparently, the Oak has forgotten about the conversation between Ellie and Marlene when both characters were introduced in episode 1. Ellie stated that she was dumped on Fedra when she was a baby and Marlene said that she was the one who left her there. Granted, we don't know how Marlene ended up with Baby Ellie, but that's why Ellie never had a family.
Your intro sounds get me every time, the noises of the infected with the acoustic guitar make all my hairs stand on end 😬 Thank you so much for getting your reactions up so quickly 🥰 love you guys
Such an amazing episode. Love every bit of it! It made me think and talk about what we take for granted. My mom and I talked about, the video stores, the magazines of games that I still have. The joy on Ellie her face as she sees the wonders of the mall. Absoluty amazing, the connection between Riley and Ellie, and Ellie and Joel. Listening to the podcast after watching the episode made me smile. This show is amazing. I love it so much❤️
In the video game you find maybe 5 bullets at a time. You spent a lot of time scavenging for tools and medical supplies to help you make it further. It’s just as scarce with more enemies in the video game.
Love your reaction, guys. Always love to hear your perspective. I was worried about the glass breaking too!😂 Love the use of both versions of "Take on me". These two girls are such powerhouse actors.
So many reactions to this episode and this is the first one I've seen (so far) that even mentioned the carousel music. But yeah, it's The Cure's Just Like Heaven.
I loved this episode so much. Everything doesn't need to be action 24/7 to be good. In fact, the slower character moments are what really impact me in the long run. Zombie stories are easy to tell, but stories about PEOPLE are what truly impact us.
You three had a dad attack over dancing on the counters. Very funny to see. Even if we are going to go more of a TV Western on the wound treatment I think they are still going to need some antibiotics if they can find any. Thanks again for another good reaction.
Also this in the game wasn’t in part 2 all all, it’s part of the dlc for the first game and it happened exactly like this! It also did more so in the game go back and forth with Ellie trying to find stuff in another mall to stitch up Joel after he had been injured to the Riley flashback happening. This came out not long after the first game came out
@@BaddMedicine sure thing! 🤜🏼🤛🏼🤘🏼 I enjoyed it a ton, and never expect anything less than the best from you guys. Already looking forward to the next episode!
The moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection…wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. I was thinking, “Can we please bundle Pedro up a little more…he’s chilly!” 😢🥶
Carousel song was "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure. As an 80s teen I recognized it almost immediately. My sister, who's older, had no clue. Gave a layer of meaning and feels to me that she didn't get. So well done.
This episode was mostly from the Left behind DLC it wasn’t included in the original game till a bit later. Now it’s worked into the re release version I believe.
I thought Riley telling Ellie you can’t fight everyone and to pick your battles was more about what happened to Riley with FEDRA. We learn that Riley was the fighter, that she’d put someone in the infirmary for a week, and she ended up getting sanitation duty. This is her last night in Boston so she’s trying to tell Ellie to make better choices, to not be like her and always challenge authority, to be smart and then be able to make a difference. Sort of a learn from my mistakes kind of moment.
Don't know if anyone else mentioned it but the song on the merry go round was not "take on me" from aha. , it is " just like heaven" from the cure... still 80s though :)
for Dave: nothing of this was from part two, this was more or less shot-for-shot of the DLC "Left Behind" for Part 1. The DLC shows the RIley/ Mall section, the only thing missing from this episode is that parallel to playing that, you also play as Ellie in current day as well, as she is scouting a mall to find medical supplies to help Joel, and she has to take out some hunters there- that part is mostly game play and story wise only triggers her memories of the mall with Riley. So this whole episode is just the story part of the DLC showing Ellie getting bit and losing Riley.
Episode was great. Let's you understand that when Ellie kills the trapped infected in episode 3, it's not a morbid curiosity but more a rage and hate for what it took away from her (Riley). Also 'take on me' is linked to the games because in part 2, Ellie sings a cover of the song which is amazing.
I've always adored the Left Behind DLC. We get to see Ellie at her most hopeful and unbothered. We get to see her fall in love, and then experience her first true loss. It also solidifies the lengths Ellie would go to fight for Joel. She's not gonna let him go because he didn't either. It is VERY crucial to understanding who she is, what drives her, and is the perfect bridge between Part 1 and Part 2. Also, the DLC has one of the best encounters in the entire franchise where you're playing as Ellie (an underfed 14 y.o. child), fighting off 2 big waves of these raiders. You have to act quickly cuz the raiders are about to break into the place where he is kept. You have the sutures you need, but these guys stand in your way. You are hopelessly outmatched, but you just don't stop fighting. It feels appropriately difficult and tricky.
As a young woman who is empathetic. I felt like Ellie really cared for Riley, not only in a romantic sense but she considered her her own family noticed how Ellie is a lot gentler around Riley compared to the beginning of the episode where they showed Ellie’s violence. I can relate to her anger response to being hurt.
The collapsing floor under the co--se is just another of these _"don't waste your time thinking about it, it won't ever make sense, anyway!"_ moments, of which this show has so many on offer.
I enjoy your insight, u notice connections and things I don’t. Also, u def know more about guns than I do….im from los angeles, no one is learning to shoot/hunt with their dad here lol.
24:20 App Oak is absolutely right. Characters in different eps have said Fedra is needed in places. The showrunners mentioned that they are real careful not to paint one faction as only good or only bad. That's real life and i like that. All rebellions are not good rebellions and all powers are not bad/evil powers. You know some folks just take things to the extreme cause they don't like something.
One thing I would like to say, some may disagree with, is that Joel is not our main character. Ellie is. Without Ellie the story would end with Joel arriving in Jackson. Fin. I cant fill in the details, but I don't imagine there would be much left for a story after that point. Ellie is the soul and life of this story. Period.
Considering the second game mostly focuses on Ellie too, I'd say that that's a fair take ^^ That being said tho, I think in the end the biggest "main character" is humanity. As in, how people will act in a certain scenario, going from the worst of the worst to being open and loving.
What I found interesting is that you see Ellie, at least back then, shes rather cautious when it comes to her and her friends. I just know next weeks episode will wreck my entire life, and idk if I can take it
None of this was Part 2, it was the "Left Behind" DLC released for the original game. The main difference being that you control Ellie and have her hunting around a mall looking for a first aid kit to help Joel, the flashbacks happen within those scenes.
For me, this episode was showing a turning point for Ellie and Joel. Joel had to learn to be the vulnerable one and let her take charge. It's trust he hasn't had in anyone for a long time. Ellie said previously when Joel was trying to hand her off to Tommy. She has watched everyone she cares about die or leave her, and she didn't want to lose Joel. The flashback to Riley and the mall was her struggling with what Joel wanted her to do, leave behind another loved one. She had to watch Riley turn and know she had been left behind by her friend/love. She had to leave Tess behind and now Joel was forcing her to leave. The turning point was when she remembered that Riley and captain Kwong said - two choices 1. Easy way (leave Joel). Or 2. Stick it out, fight it, carry on and refuse to leave behind another loved one. Such a great character development episode.
peep how Riley said Marlene wouldn’t let Ellie go with her. Marlene is Ellie’s Godmother and as you guys know now was told to protect her. Putting Ellie in FEDRA school was her way of doing so, and Joel selfishly kills her off for a daughter he “could’ve had” not true blood
Fedra is all the world that Ellie knew so she was unaware of the hardships of the civilians living in QZs across the country. All she knew was Fedra and their doctrine. It was mentioned in an earlier episode that there have already been several rebellions at other QZs. Even Frank agreed with Bill that the new regime/Fedra were operating in the same vein as Nazis, which is not good at all.
OK I get familiar vibes from the actress that plays Riley but I can't remember where I've seen her. I'm probably not correct here but there is a song called I'll Find You by Tori Kelly and Lacrae. It's a few years old but I think in the music video, This actress plays the lead. She only would have been about 10 or 11 at the time maybe even slightly younger. She is sick in the hospital laying in bed and her parents are standing there and her spirit or consciousness or whatever stands up and leaves her body behind and then continues to run around the hospital playing with the spirits of all the other children that are in there sick. They didn't die or anything it's like theyre astral projecting like Doctor Strange.
Mission to Mars with Tim Robbins & Gary Sinise was the better of the two Mars movies that came out that year. It was another case of two similar-themed movies coming out in the same year. We had Volcano vs Dante's Peak in 1997, Deep Impact vs Armageddon in 1998, and then Red Planet vs Mission to Mars in 2000.
It’s always fun to watch your reactions and hear your perspectives! You should definitely watch James Cameron’s Avatar btw. I recently watched it after several years and it’s still a very good movie!
I can't lie, I find myself wishing the mall scene was just a little shorter just because I'm so invested in current day, and when we only get a bit of time with the story once a week it makes me frustrated 😂 but the episode was great, bella really sells her emotional scenes
The military guy I think is manipulating her still to keep her in the system. Someone in another reaction comment section mentioned that this is how they keep you in the army, that it is their tactics.
This was from the game's DLC, and all things considered, they did a really nice job. I'm really surprised that Riley was posted at this mall, and at no point did she wake up that infected guy. All in all, it was a great episode. This is the second gay relationship episode and while The Last of Us has always been very progressive, I know it's not as common to see on TV (in a non-sexualuzed way) so that was pretty cool.
Now this video is the actual mall that this episode was filmed in. Great reaction guys!!! I freakin love this show! here's the video of the mall before they decroated it for the show. You can tell where Ellie jumped over the counter at the food court here. Enjoy guys! ua-cam.com/video/nD5XcINARJY/v-deo.html

This episode was good and it was pretty cool they were doing a episode off of the DLC of the game. It was a neat episode can’t wait for next Sunday.
this episode was a deeply sad but hopeful one. i like how riley’s words after they got bit motivated ellie to try to save joel😭 she couldn’t save riley from that horrible destiny but she knew there was a chance to save him, ellie can’t lose the other most important person in her life
"It's over."
"It will be... but not yet. It ends this way for everyone sooner or later, right? Some of us just get there faster than others. But we don't quit. Whether... it's two minutes... or two days... we don't give that up."
I wonder if there is an episode I won't be teary eyed... Knowing the 'baby girl' that is coming and the ending, I guess there won't be....
Great reaction again, guys
don't comment future quotes, dude
Had romance vibes from the moment they reunited. At least.. I could tell Ellie loved her.
Its so cool see grown ass men's like you liking episodes like this, i mean the mature, unfortunately not all are like this
I’m so happy whenever you post! Your channel was initially recommended for your last of us reactions but I’ve stayed for all your other content. I’m looking forward to every last of us, avatar last airbender, and haunting of hill house video! Thank you so much
Thank you for the kind words! Thanks for giving us a chance!
Thanks for helping me through my saddest days with your amazing content. Oak's view on life amazes me ♡
We got you, John! 🤜🤛
Dave is killing it on these edits!
Much appreciated 🤘Thanks for watching with us.
The carousel music is actually "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure
Thank you!
Your intro sounds get me every time, the noises of the infected with the acoustic guitar make all my hairs stand on end 😬
Thank you so much for getting your reactions up so quickly 🥰 love you guys
Thank you for watching with us, Jane!
I love it so much❤️
These episodes go by so freaking fast!! I wanna see the next one!¡Now
Incredible how this show hasn't had a bad episode yet
This came out not long after the first game came out
None of this episode is from part 2.
It's mainly the Left Behind DLC for the first game. And its extremely faithful.
Shoutout to Diamond Dave for pumping out the editing so quick on these!! Im just starting the reaction, and I already know it’s gonna be a BANGER.
Very much appreciated my friend 🤜🤛🤘 hope you enjoy!
It was great to wake up to this. Absolutely loved the episode. Again thought no heart strings would be pulled, but nope, they got me again.
Song on the carousel was just like heaven from the cure lullaby version.
The carousel song is The Cure's Just Like Heaven. Probably one of their best songs.
Golden Tee is the only one I'm good at too. Lots of memories playing it eith my dad in bars or arcades growing up
Love that game
Don't know if anyone else mentioned it but the song on the merry go round was not "take on me" from aha. , it is " just like heaven" from the cure... still 80s though :)
I love how after this ep joel is back on his feet and fighting and totally fine as if he didnt bleed loads
for Dave: nothing of this was from part two, this was more or less shot-for-shot of the DLC "Left Behind" for Part 1.
🤜🤛
No I remember having a walkman around 2003, definitely listened to cassettes until at least 2005.
Courrel tune is The cure boys.
Just like heaven
So cute in piano
Episode was great. Let's you understand that when Ellie kills the trapped infected in episode 3, it's not a morbid curiosity but more a rage and hate for what it took away from her (Riley).
Also 'take on me' is linked to the games because in part 2, Ellie sings a cover of the song which is amazing.
Another great one in the books! Great editing DD! Keep it up fellas!
The song playing on the carousel is Just like Heaven by the cure.
The Merry-Go-Round song was Just Like Heaven by the Cure
Based on some things Mason Quinn said without any spoilers I think you guys would enjoy the movie This Is England. Would love a reaction to that.
I look forward to your reactions every Monday!
The collapsing floor under the co--se is just another of these _"don't waste your time thinking about it, it won't ever make sense, anyway!"_ moments, of which this show has so many on offer.
Love the acoustic trench last of us cover for the intro guys!
Defenetly my favorite episode in this show.
I enjoy your insight, u notice connections and things I don’t. Also, u def know more about guns than I do….im from los angeles, no one is learning to shoot/hunt with their dad here lol.
I don't know how to word this but it makes my heart happy when you guys to show positivity and acceptance with lgbtq relationships,.
It's now my mission to find and ride a carousel that plays The Cure; a Cureousel, if you will.
As someone who hasnt played the game, my anxiety was at a 10 the whole time waiting for the infected to attack.
Excellent episode guys!
The carousel song is just like heaven by the cure
These reactions make my day guys 😊
Out of all the reactors I've watched watching this episode, only you guys noticed the Carousel music being Take On Me. 🎠
It's not Take On Me, it's Just Like Heaven by The Cure.
Period.
Considering the second game mostly focuses on Ellie too, I'd say that that's a fair take ^^
That being said tho, I think in the end the biggest "main character" is humanity. As in, how people will act in a certain scenario, going from the worst of the worst to being open and loving.
The only people that would disagree with this take are the ones that think TLOU is a game about zombies…
@@blinkachu5275 Yeah, it's definitely a story that focuses on humanity.
So it would be of no surprise that some are so resistant to its story. 🙄
my fave game back in the day was that ninja game legend of kage. and that two stick karate game was actually a lot of fun too as simple as it was.
What I found interesting is that you see Ellie, at least back then, shes rather cautious when it comes to her and her friends. I just know next weeks episode will wreck my entire life, and idk if I can take it
Another episode to make me cry. Yay lol 🥺💜
None of this was Part 2, it was the "Left Behind" DLC released for the original game. The main difference being that you control Ellie and have her hunting around a mall looking for a first aid kit to help Joel, the flashbacks happen within those scenes.
The only thing that was from Part 2 (not really a spoiler) is the use of the Take On Me song, which they also used in the season trailer.
the song playing during the carousel scene wasn't A-Ha, it was "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure. so, still 80s, just not "Take On Me".
Monday morning with my favorite guys!!!! 🎉😎😎😎
Let's goooooo
I had 50 minutes of anxiety, yelling "she's gonna die" every new scene, with this episode 💀😁
Great reaction. Great news, The Mandalorian Season 3 starts in 2 days time.
Couple of us haven't seen any star wars. Those will come this year. :)
I recently watched it after several years and it’s still a very good movie!
it's not just a more comfortable life. being in position of power could help in reforming the QZ.
OMG!!! Ellie and Riley are so CUTE COUPLE.... 😭😭😭
I can't lie, I find myself wishing the mall scene was just a little shorter just because I'm so invested in current day, and when we only get a bit of time with the story once a week it makes me frustrated 😂 but the episode was great, bella really sells her emotional scenes
Don't worry. Not gonna give anything away but the last 2 episodes will make up for it and it will be bangers!
@@TokuRewinds I feel like they need three episodes for it. I hope they find a way to tell what remains of the story without rushing it.
The military guy I think is manipulating her still to keep her in the system. Someone in another reaction comment section mentioned that this is how they keep you in the army, that it is their tactics.
Not a bottle episode. Nor was it a filler. Just a heads up.
Has anyone ever told you guys that Dondond Dave looks and sounds like Daniel Negreanu the poker player?
Banger and very much like the game!
