  • Badd Medicine here and its Last of Us reaction time!
What another fantastic episode. Very much the second part of last week’s Kansas City adventure, episode 5 of HBO’s The Last of Us is equal parts thrilling and distressing. Fugitive brothers Henry and Sam add a welcome layer of warmth to Joel and Ellie’s relationship, helping our protagonists progress on both their physical and emotional journeys, as well as leading them to one of the action high points in the series. It’s an unforgettable and explosive end to a chapter whose fuse steadily burned throughout this and the previous episode.

I think it's more like Ellie is growing up in a harsh world and is adapting but Joel grew up in the old world and these crazy things are affecting him more than it is her. mmmmmm I don't know. That's a bit of a stretch. Since he's an old man it makes sense that he's got bad aim, specially at night time, in the dark. And it's only after he's dead that Kathleen asks him to hold them there.
What's sad though, is that he just had to do as Joel said and he'd be alright, cause he had to know by now that if Joel (outsider, bad guy) wanted to kill him, he'd be dead already. Maybe he still moved his rifle cause he saw an opportunity to be done with the suffering and misery and just die. He knew the second he moved his rifle Joel would shoot.

Henry doesn’t have the brawn, the skills, and the gun power of Joel to survive but he’s strategic, and aware of his surroundings. I love how they talked about fear. I’ve always thought Ellie’s “fearlessness” is because she mimics Joel who often tells her “they’ll be alright”, and never shows her any sense of danger. Also, when the Snipper shots were being fired, this was in an industrial area, so she was a bit away, but what was cool was listening to the echoes of the bullets throughout the area. Cordyceps is one of the fungi that is composed of chitin; crustaceans and a lot of arthropods also have a lot of chitin in their exoskeleton. As the infected get worse and worse (covered in more and more of the fungus), you can kind of think of it as having more and more armor/exoskeleton.
This was a great episode. I think the whole "nothing happened until Kathleen took over" is referring to how the brother was very pacifistic, but sometimes that doesn't work. Sometimes you have to be cruel and aggressive, like Kathleen, to win. Great reactions to the big boy infected!
Oh, Ellie's belief that she could cure Sam made it so much more painful. I think she genuinely believed that it would work. She is a child, she has been told over and over that she is a cure, she has no understanding about how a cure would be made so it makes sense that she thinks it could be relatively simple... Oh, so sad. She apologized at the grave.
When Tess died, Ellie hung around to grieve, while Joel shoved his emotions down grimly and pressed on. This time it was Joel who lingered and Ellie who left. He is becoming more emotional, and she is becoming colder/more traumatized. Also, Joel and Henry mocked "endure and survive." Henry survived but couldn't endure. Both parts are important.
Sam also faced the window. Two things: He knew he wouldn't see Ellie, which means he wouldn't attack her. He was protecting her. As he felt himself turn, he knew he wouldn't hear her. If he couldn't see her, he wouldn't know she was there and thus couldn't attack her. Also, it has been confirmed over the years of the game that runners DO have the person in their head. So Sam was in there when he attacked Ellie. Something to think of though -> If Ellie never touched him, if no one ever touched him or got in his vision, he would be sitting there forever watching the sunset. He's deaf, so he wouldn't hear anything. Once he hit the clicker phase, and he could no longer see, then he would be sitting there in darkness and silence forever.
If you play the video game, when you get to the sewers area, get every note from Ish. They give a nod to him which I appreciate (the part of the tunnels with the kid's room and the picture on the wall that says, "Our protectors -> Daddy and Ish." It's a fascinating and heartwarming/heartbreaking story).

I never played the game and know everyone has been crying through these episodes . I had not cried until I watched this episode. I was recked! The kid actors in this show are incredible. Sam was amazing you felt his fear. The little kid clicker in the car with Elli and the way she moved was incredible. The effects in this show with the creatures just gets more and more fantastic as this story builds.

In large part this is due to the actors , If the casting had not been done so well this show would not be this good. The acting is Phenomenal by everyone. I love how they're showing the flipside of "We the people." Different doesn't always mean better, anyone can be blinded by revenge. Reminds me of how Nazi collaborators were treated. Yes, some were real POS, but many were just trying to survive.
I would have lost it on them for making so much noise!
"I'm scared all the time." Reminded me of Bruce's, "I'm always angry." Lol
I was waiting for the reveal of one of them to be bit...wasn't expecting Ellie to try THAT though.
Kinda poetic that Kathleen got taken out by a kid while trying to kill a kid, but also fatalistic that Sam gets bitten. Henry's reaction is perfect.
GREAT ENDING. You can feel how Ellie and Joel are feeling inside.
It's cool that they got a deaf person to play a deaf person. I never realized how different Bella's natural voice and acting voice are.
Definitely still right behind Andor. TLOU and Hill House are fighting for #2 right now.

(I get very disheartened when people don't because they live in our real world.) This show is very clever in getting you to detest a character and/or their moral argument only to punch you in the face with a likeable character making the same argument and then getting people either to struggle with the cognitive dissonance or be (hilariously, horribly) hypocritical.

Bella Ramsey was so great in this episode...also i finally get what this show is about...its about Ellie growing up, and she made a big big mistake not telling Henry and Joel about Sam which was kind of stupid but childlike which she actually is...if she had told Joel and Henry about Sam, maybe Henry would have had the time to say goodbye to his brother and make peace with it and live on and he wouldnt have had to kill him off like that, Joel could have taken care of it and Ellie robbed both Henry and Sam of that and she knows it that she fucked it up really really bad and i think thats what the show is about, its not about finding a miracle cure but about growing up/coming of age in a Zombie apocalypse which i gotta say i have never ever seen in this genre..seeing the best of humanity and worst of humanity will surely affect how you think and it will be interesting to see on what conclusion Ellie will reach

Finally watching your reactions! Man, even though I was sad with Bill and Frank, it was Sarah and then Henry and Sam that rlly got me. It's just something about children, who have their whole lives ahead of them and have hope and their whole futures ahead of them ended tragically and unjustly, that just pains me to my core.
Idk if you guys listen to the post episode podcasts, but the directors said that the fact that Sam can't hear is an indication that he was still in there, when he turned. They said that the original mind deteriorates as the brain gets infected, but it usually takes months for that process to finish. And I remember in the games that you could hear some of the infected cry or ask for help when they were feeding so it makes it especially sad that Sam was still in there somewhere, watching his body betray him and do things he didn't want to do. Just adds a level of dread to Sam's story, especially with his question about if it would still be him inside if he turns into a monster. It also makes it so heartbreaking because he was turned away from Ellie when she woke up, implying that some time in the night, he knew he was gonna turn and turned away so he wouldn't attack her.
Also love your perspective on Kathleen. Most people just hate her and feel vindictive joy when she dies a horrible death, but if you think about it, lots of us wouldn't be able to forgive, nor feel any resolution with that type of compassion, in her shoes. I know I wouldn't be able to forgive someone if they killed my brother or a loved one of mine. I would hope to believe that I wouldn't be the type of person who would commit to revenge, but who knows? If I was pushed that far, in a world like that, maybe I would? Especially because you can see both sides of the story, with Henry and Kathleen, it just goes to show how f'd the whole world is and how people have to make choices that they shouldn't have to make. It also goes to show how messed up revenge and rage-filled anger is, when you get consumed by it, letting it cloud your judgement and priorities, but can't process those feelings with anything besides more misery and anger.
In their podcast they said that “So much of The Last of Us is about people that have to make choices. And whether they’re heroes or villains really depends on your perspective.” And I think that really fits with the theme of The Last of Us.
Again, thanks for another great reaction!
