    Surprised you didn't go for the wheat port instead of the wood port... double the production, unblockable, etc.

      yeah, that decision also made no sense to me

      I think his take on it was that wood is essentially a dead resource in his hand. He'd rather port his wood and keep wheat over the opposite. If he goes all in on wheat and the 6 gets blocked it hurts him a lot more than having the 6 wood blocked. Tbh I would also have gone for the wheat port, but in hindsight, I think this was the right play.

      @@poro3246 disagree completely the sheer amount of production of his wheat make the wheat port an obvious choice. I have a hunch he had it in his mind that if he went on the wheat port he would have to build all the way to the 8/3 when it just isn't the case.

I bet that viewers would like to see that gameplay☺️

    I'd also like to know the explanation on going wood port instead of wheat port (It looks like that was too obvious for you, since you have not tell a word on the wheat port perspective).
    I am not a pro catan player (around 90 online games played) but personally I would go for wheat port for a number of reasons:
    - To me its simply +3 ore vs +5 wood, and since ore is better coordinated with excessive wheat its an obvious choice to me
    - Everyone has a decent wheat access, so the trade value of wheat is lower, and since you sit on 10 points of wheat it will make you change it 4:1 quite a few times at least
    - Since you decided not to point your road towards 4 brick (I would try to get there), going for a double wood production with a wood port is not that efficient, since you'll need to change wood for brick which you always need together.
    - Wheat is unblockable to you, whilst wood is a permablock once you are becoming the main threat.
    I am always trying to analyze each game after its finished, and all of that stats at colonist.io helps much with that. After like 50 games I came up with some conclusions that set up my own strategy:
    I always value resource coordination over excessive production myself, that is because I am not that good at tracking and thus coming up with valuable trading ideas. I mostly play at "very fast" speed with no voice chat so there is not much time to get into interaction with other players, and I found out that this strategy works the best for me. Very often my games end with me having the least resources rolled, but the most used, since I am not losing any due to rolls of 7, what makes this strategy well balanced and less luck dependent, while mitigating the influence of other players on achieving my win condition.
    I must add, that I have never played in a tournament, so maybe my strategy would not work with more experienced players (but tbh I am not sure how to fight it myself :D)
    I see You are very good at "mindgames" over the table making your opponents "falling into your net" and doing trades that helps you more than them. So maybe your faith in your negotiation skills made you do that move towards wood port?
    One more value I see of that wood port is every time 6 rolls, you get a free card of your choice, so that is very flexible, maybe that is the way to go? Since you decided to go for dev card strategy, you might have assumed, that you will be able to defend that 6 wood block with your knights (again good tracking obviously help to improve knights value).
    I would be grateful if you could comment.
    I learned from your videos a lot, but having such a straight feedback could make me beat you one day, so I understand if you'll refuse :D

      Honestly a very good write up. I think I did the wood port because I wanted to upgrade the 346, but I’m doubting myself now after reading. I think what you suggested may be better.

    14:30 about the EV of robbing before or after the roll, its not that much of a maths question. Robbing and getting a 7 loses you 4 cards, not robbing and getting a 6 "loses" you 3 cards, so with the probability of 7 beeing higher than 6 its very obvious you made the right call by rolling first.
    It gets more complicated when we consider the type of cards you lose (3 wood vs 4 cards of your own choosing), but thats not really maths anymore then

    • @alastairlocke4621
      @alastairlocke4621 2 роки тому +4

      You also have to consider the blocking affect that it has on the opponents (ie. if he puts it on the 8 and an 8 rolls that's worth X cards too)

    min 14.30 Math teacher and poker player here.
    You roll seven 1 out of 6 times. Wish means you lose 4 cards 1 out of 6 times. aka you lose 2/3 card on average if you use the knight.
    If you remove the knight your average gain on wood is about 0,42 wood gain versus 0,66 avg card loss.
    if "avg card gain" is more than "avg card loss" its smart to you use knight.
    Conclusion: You should not place the knight before you roll if you risk getting discarded. If you have 5points(2 city and 1 settlement )or more its best to use knight before you roll.

    At 14:35: 'Is the EV of using the knight worth it or not'?
    It is worth it! Assuming you would play the knight in both scenarios (in one scenario you use the knight before roll, the other after):
    -Chances of rolling a 7: 1/6 (16.7 %)
    -Chances of rolling a 6: 5/36 (13.8%)
    EV of using knight before roll: ((5/36)*3 cards on wood)+((1/6)*-4 cards you would discard if 7 rolled) = -0.25 cards on average
    EV of not using knight before roll: ((5/36)*-3) = -0.416 cards on average
    So in this case, because you have such high production on wood, it is worth to take the risk that you will 7 out as doing so will net you with an extra .16 cards on average. Of course, this doesn't mean that it might *actually* be worth it to play a knight in a real game scenario given that the hand you have may be actionable (or even give you the win), but if we are talking about purely on number of cards in hand, you should use your knight.
    Note that whether it will be worth it or not depends on the number being blocked and how much production you have. Broadly speaking, 3 or more cards worth of production in a spot is worth using a knight for (assuming a decent number).
    You are essentially solving for:
    (X*Y) - (1/6*-4) > (X*-Y). Where X = chance of rolling your number and Y = cards of production in that number.

    • @GlockenspielHero
      @GlockenspielHero 2 роки тому +3

      Math seems wrong, you don't get to count the +3 cards twice. The -0.25 you calculate is negative, that's all you need to say it's better to hold.
      You can simply think: A 6/36 chance of losing 4 cards is not offset by a 5/36 of gaining 3 cards.
      As you mention it depends on the situation, sometimes that trade *is* worth it, but in terms of expected number of cards you should not steal.

    • @jiin5993
      @jiin5993 2 роки тому +1

      @@GlockenspielHero yeah, the error is using -3 in the EV calculation for using the knight after rolling. The EV is actually 0 in that case, because you don't gain any cards due to the block. The -3 makes it seem like you lose cards when a 6 is rolled. "Losing out on" and "losing" are not the same thing.
