I have been looking for a video like this. My 71 was stolen in November of 2020 and I got it back in February of 2021. It needs quite a bit of work now. one of the big things it needs is new wiring. So thank you.
Black with white lights, but you always might want to look at the lighting of the radio and climate controls and pick a light color that makes them all the same for a more factory look
Now this is what I’m talking about! You are so close! And sounds like you are hitting your final gear toward completion! That painless harness is going to make this a breeze. It’d be awesome if you did a very detailed video/s about the install. Tough to find good videos on this stuff on the web. As far as gauges, I’m not a big fan of red/blue, so my vote is for black finish with white numbers. But you should consider what the rest of the interior will consist of and make sure nothing would look out of place. Exciting stuff, keep up the good work!
I have a '69 Mustang and I went with the black face with blue backlighting. Amazing look and the extra features (0-60 times, 1/4 mile, ect, ect.) I have Atomic efi and went with the BIM and it made everything super simple! You're definitely on the right path in my opinion!
I get genuinely excited every time I see you uploaded a new video. I honestly like the red and black instrument but I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. Keep up the awesome videos and builds!
I really liked what you’ve done and still doing to the mustang. I have a 73 Mach 1 it’s a project in process I hope one day I can finish mine but in the mean time I’m getting very good tips from your videos. Thanks. JM .
On my 73 coupe I updated the stock gauges wiring but they are still hard to seen if you have tinted windows. This is the black background with white numbers and orange needles. I would have looked at the Dakota Digital if they had gauges when I was doing mine but they only had digital displays back then. What I’m getting at is the gauges are in a hole and if they are illuminated all the time this would solve the hard to see issue with a black background. While I like the red and black I would go for a brighter color to help daytime visibility. Also matching the other gauges is a great idea that was already pointed out. Thank you and keep up the awesome videos!
Great videos, been following along for a while now. I have a 1971 Mustang Coupe I'm rebuilding, so I love seeing what you're doing and get to see different ideas.
I have the Holly Dual sync with the Sniper in my 69 along with the Dakota Digital dash. The ECU runs the dual fans and syncs up with my 4R70W automatic electronic trans. Car is at paint, awaiting the seats to button down the seat riser locations which had to move back (I am 6'8"). Once the seats arrive, they'll burn in the seat risers and paint. Then full painless electric harness. I mocked the engine & trans up prior to paint. Relocated the optima battery to the trunk and ran direct circuits to the engine via a couple power studs, one in the engine compartment, the other in the passenger bay. Looking forward to following you along.
The stock gages are black with white letters. I would stick with those colors - too bad they didn't make the indicators orange like the original. I would love it if you added the automatic headlight control module and retained power. Also, look into the keyless entry, cruise control, and tire pressure monitoring modules. Pack all the cool electronic gadgets you can in there .... Its nice having someone else be the guinea pig for my '73! I am really interested to see how you route the wiring for the battery in the trunk. I looked into it but I couldn't find a place to route it where I was comfortable that it wouldn't be pinched. I would see if Holley would do a trade and get you a sniper system. For the advertising they should give you one for free. I was going to get the FiTech for my 351C and would purchase the sniper system if they supported your channel - DO YOU HEAR ME HOLLEY! I hope you call TMI and get some of their interior parts. Console, door panels, headliner, dash pad, etc .... all of their stuff looks awesome and I would love to see it installed. I am curious what you are going to do with the center dash panel that housed the 3 gages, that are now a part of the Dakota Digital gages. I always thought a double din radio would be cool but maybe a little out of place. How do we speed this build up? Patreon, beer, free labor (I click on all the ads as it is).
Awesome video! I always look forward to your Mustang vids. I'm putting a lot of similar branded parts in my 67 fastback soon and your videos show how to do it all. Keep up the great work and high quality content!
I would go with the Red gauges. It's less fatiguing to the eye with red light as opposed to blue, white, or green. Either way those Dakota instruments will look really nice in there.
Another great video, My CJ5 Resto started with the full wiring harness and dash/gauge harness from Painless and the dual batter kit. Next on my list - Trail Rocker for the Ram. Now for Dakota Digital - VHX-71F-MUS-C-R - 1971- 73 Ford Mustang VHX Instruments - Style:Carbon Fiber Look - Color:Red
I REALLY want a Trail Rocker for my Ram now as well... gonna have to wait a bit first but I'm so happy with it in the Jeep so far and this will be awesome as well.
I have the Dakota digital gauges in my Jeep CJ7 and my 68 GTO! I love them, carbon fiber in both but white light in the Jeep and red in the GTO. For your car the red would be my pick, it’ll make that black car with black interior look menacing
I'm liking this build more and more! I would match the colors with the rest of the switches and stuff. At night driving I liked the amber/red light more than any other.
Love the Dakota guages and your chosen color scheme. I would suggest some idiot lights(for example red light for low oil pressure or high water temps) if your doing some track time with large Marge. Much easier to spot with everything else that goes on when driving fast on track. Can't wait to see more ! Oh, and before I forget................ Pinto Rocks !
carbon fiber gauges with the red lighting less eye fatigue. I used to be an over the the road trucker and at the end of a long day of driving the red lighting was less stressful to my eyes at night
I think the black gauge and blue light would be cool! The light is kind of turquoise in the stock gauges so blue would be the closest. But hey red could be cool if you want a bit of a terminator vibe so you cant go wrong.
Do you have radio/ climate control lights yet? I would make sure those match. But i think the black and blue look sleek. And what color is the Track rocker?
Look at restomod air for climate control and the controls for the climate control whatever color scheme you get they will have something that will match right up no problem!! Loving the build! Keep it up!
I am following along. I am working on my 72, also. 351c with a 174 B&M blower. I am thinking super sniper. Less wiring. Mine is a basket case. Last on the road about 87. It is my high school car.
I like the black carbon with blue from looking at the website, but as the person mentioned in a comment below perhaps have a look at what other lighting your having first, keep it up can’t wait to here it fire up..👍
Very cool Jason! I like Painless’s harnesses, but I don’t like their price. I am doing an LS engine swap in a Jeep TJ. I wound up re-building the harness that came with engine. It was a major pain. I had zero experience with wiring [anything] when I did mine. I sometimes wish I had bought Painless’s harness. Now, I’m working on retrofitting the Jeep’s harness to play nice with the LS. (I am ditching the Jeep’s PCM.) I look forward to seeing how you lay out your new harness and get it working. Are you going to do a video of wiring the gauge cluster? Keep it up. Oh, I won’t comment on the gauges. I’m sure you have in mind what you want. I went with Autometer’s Designer Black series for the Jeep.
Carbon Fiber Background and Blue Lighting would be my choice. The Black Alloy is very cool but I don`t care for the shape of the bottom of the gauge/number layout compared to the more traditional round gauge on the Carbon Fiber.
The distributor has a wiring harness from holley that plugs it to the computer so the puter handles the timing ..The holley i have is the terminator x computer with a MSD billet dist ..I found the part number for the harness in the manual for the efi.
Hey very cool video, I'm building a 51 Ford truck and I am using a 94 mustang as the donor. Would you use the wire harness from the car or the one that you are using in the video. Thanks for the info
Love the channel and vids bro. But sorry PINTO steals the show 😁. I love watching the videos cause I have a 71 coupe and there's not so much love on our year cars out there. Keep killin it!!!!
I would either go red or white on backlighting... and while i like the look of the carbon fiber, i see how those gauges are shrouded in the dash. if it were my car, i'm not sure how i would feel about dark gauges down in the dash. granted, its not my car, and i have never even been inside one of those. Just my past experience in cars with deep-set gauges and problems with visibility in daylight. Its a good setup.... its just that Dakota Digital tends to require that you run their specific controllers and interface items making the routing or packaging an additional concern in the process. I won't make any suggestion on what to choose, though....
Quick question when picking out the harness which one did you go with? I know the harness that say 65-1973 have the ignition key on the dash and since our year of mustang have it on the steering column what did you do?
I went with their "Pro" harness which has GM color codes just because I liked the way it has so many relays built in. The ford harnesses have options for on column or dash for key.
Black with blue is my fave. As a small note, during the blue mat scene, the music was mixed a little too high, and made it harder to hear you. Really looking forward to seeing this thing drive!
I don’t know why the terminator wouldn’t work with the b&m blower, it’s not like the injectors are under boost, it’s just like it’s on a bigger engine because it’s a draw through application, and why would you need a three bar map? If the map is reading under the carb as vacuum and not in the manifold as pressure. The only reason I could see for a three bar map is if the injectors were under the blower and experiencing boost, it’s not like a turbo application that the system is under boost, if you have a 351 at normal air pressure of 14.7 under the throttle body the MAP would read vacuum to 14.7 psi of air pressure, putting the blower on top of the 351 won’t make the MAP read any more pressure, just more vacuum, it’s as if you now put it on a 460 instead of a 351, if you don’t plan on changing blower pullies it’s never going to change how much vacuum it’s seeing. I’ve been researching this for my blown big block Chevy with a B&M 420 megablower on it and thus is how I understand it. The guys at Holley would know best, just be certain you are talking to the correct person who understands roots superchargers and not a blow thu system
Like the Bleu.. But i alwais like bleu..😂 i bought a single tacho for my 73. With warning lights in it as it was from.factory.. You can order that to to be more up to dat cost about 250 bucks... Put in the led lights and youre there also.. A well every body does it diverend 😀
If you were to do an engine swap what ECU would you use when doing this on a newer car. Or would this not work because it’s not merging rather than replacing the original. I want to redo the entire wiring in a engine swapped car but need to understand more before I start, thanks.
I'm not sure what you mean. I'm swapping in a late model Mustang engine into this vehicle but running the Holley Terminator ECU and it ended up working out perfect.
Man, I've been waiting FIVE YEARS to see you install EFI on a Roots blower! And you didn't do it!! Haha - the problem with EFI five years ago was that it was new stuff. I am planning on Terminator-X now on my Weiand 177.
That’s also the problem with trying to do it with this system. Not designed to work that way and I’m enjoying the car to much to take it down long enough to add boost yet.
@@AutoEdits If you go with the sniper, you can get the Hyperspark system. Distributor, coil, and CD box that all are designed to talk and work with the Sniper EFI system. Tune every single aspect of fuel/air and timing from the Holley software. And stupidly simple to set up!
If the Sniper EFI system is the better system for your application, why not sell the Terminator EFI system and buy the Sniper system? It'll be less headaches to get it working, you'll have the peace of mind knowing you have the right FI system and won't hurt the cool powerplant you've put together.

I was waiting for the "CRUNCH" :-)

You betcha! Thank you for the support!
Well you certainly sold me on that wiring harness! I'm also a huge proponent of the original look for my 73, but the red doesn't look bad at all.
I kind of think so as well!
I would go with the Red gauges. It's less fatiguing to the eye with red light as opposed to blue, white, or green.

@@AutoEdits What Mario said, above, regarding the dash pick.
I would pick the black and red for the instrument panel. And I have the easiest solution for your Holly wiring speed bumps... just call Lucky.
Dang it... forgot about the Lucky angle!!! Thanks!!!
I may be the odd ball here, but I really like the black panel with the white numbers. Looks cleaner than the red or blue. More classic.
Not odd ball at all! Thanks!
I have the Dakota digital gauges in my Jeep CJ7 and my 68 GTO! I love them, carbon fiber in both but white light in the Jeep and red in the GTO. For your car the red would be my pick, it’ll make that black car with black interior look menacing

OMG Pinto was really interested in the wiring. Too funny. Keep it up Pinto.
She's a goof!
This will open up my options when it comes to my 93’ typhoon build
Yeah, this is really good stuff that the internets introduced me to!
I think black and blue would look amazing
Yeah!!!!!
i'm glad you decided on an analog instrument panel. i seem to remember suggesting that. ;-)
True!!!!

Much easier to spot with everything else that goes on when driving fast on track. Can't wait to see more ! Oh, and before I forget................ Pinto Rocks !
Black gauges with white looks good. The blue is closest to the factory greenish color, but doesn't look right without at least some green in it.
I don't need them to "look" stock but I do like the more authentic feel you talk about.
Nice, something good to watch on my day off. I have a painless kit I bought about 3 years ago waiting on me. It's for my project that has stalled.
Ha! Thanks for watching and I feel you on the stalled project... it will be there when you're ready!
Cool Jason. I like the blue.
Thanks! Gotcha!
I like the black look with the blue lights
I’m really loving the look as well... very very happy!
I like the Carbon with the Blue for the gauges.
Pinto is such a good helper!
Right!
carbon fiber gauges with the red lighting less eye fatigue. I used to be an over the the road trucker and at the end of a long day of driving the red lighting was less stressful to my eyes at night

I'm really liking the carbon fiber with red. I think that matches well. Or, the black with white lightening.

Inching there...
Do you have radio/ climate control lights yet? I would make sure those match. But i think the black and blue look sleek. And what color is the Track rocker?

They need to make a Tail Rocker for Pinto to keep
HA! Dog Rocker!

Dydrodip the bezel and other trim pieces in muted low key print, like a carbon fiber or a wavy gravy dark green and black checkerboard ??
Wavy Gravy... LOL!
hehe, earned a like just from a Mustang doing a burnout in the dirt in the first 10 seconds! Awesome Jason, thanks!
Awesome! I'll take it... thanks!

Carbon Fiber Background and Blue Lighting would be my choice.
The Black Alloy is very cool but I don`t care for the shape of the bottom of the gauge/number layout compared to the more traditional round gauge on the Carbon Fiber.
Interesting... didn't pay attention to that before.
The distributor has a wiring harness from holley that plugs it to the computer so the puter handles the timing ..The holley i have is the terminator x computer with a MSD billet dist ..I found the part number for the harness in the manual for the efi.
The problem I found is that the terminator system I had still needed an MSD ignition box to manage the timing inside the Holley software.
@@AutoEdits yes that is true as I am running the 6al DIGITAL
6al plus
I think the black alloy will look the best with the red lights
Copy that!
I would have to agree with that recommendation.
I'm voting for the Carbon Fiber with Blue. It would be super clean
Hey very cool video, I'm building a 51 Ford truck and I am using a 94 mustang as the donor. Would you use the wire harness from the car or the one that you are using in the video. Thanks for the info
I think Painless makes a direct fit harness for that vehicle... use that one and then add a fuel injection harness to that.
Black and Red dude!
You got cool jeep jku and a mustang!!! I've got a jku and a 90 ssp mustang lol
Nice!!!

Blackout blue lights would be perfect
DONE!
Black with red will be easier on the eyes, with a pair of Truck Lite 7" LED headlights night driving will be a pleasure.
Great suggestion on the LED headlights!
The blue lights with the carbon
Carbon fiber is like a good charcoal suit.......goes with everything, never goes out of style

Why don't you work on the mustang now again ..
We really want to see it ready
Black alloy or carbon with blue lights
Gotcha!
Black and blue
Black background for sure. But I'm mixed on red lighting or white lighting.
Red would be easier to see at night I would think, while white would be ok, just a cleaner look.
Black and blue mate...
4:50 Pinto Super Electrical Dog. 🐕
Love that dog!
use the Holley super sniper
I want the Sniper but I HAVE the Terminator.. sooo....
I think you should pick the red one bcz u will probably go with red interior
Red interior... Hmmmmm
How much time you take to wiring your hole car
