    Not bad. I assemble and train people to assemble custom cable and wire harness assemblies for a living. As far as reworking an old assembly my only thought would be to check for stiffness in the wires to assure none were degraded and also I’d extract all terminals and re strip/ re crimp them.

    Good tutorial. On mine i went with the plastic loom stuff anywhere that will get splashed with mud water oil or dirt and the wire lume up high and in the engine bay. I found the old school plastic loom still deals with mud better, it splashes off while the wire mesh seams to oil dirt.

    Great video! It's pretty difficult to find good 4x4 related electronics tips/guides online. Is there any specific reason why you choose cloth tape over normal insolation tape? Also, in what circumstances would you recommend using the interlocking braid protection? Is that mostly for sections of the loom that would be exposed to the elements? Thanks for the epic content, subscribed!

    I saw that you used black for Reverse for your trailer harness, as per AS-2513. Good lad. Pin-2 is not for “auxiliary power” in Australia.
    You didn’t run a cable for your electric brakes though. You know what you are doing so when it comes to installing an electric brake controller, I assume you will fix it then. Maybe RedArc can donate a TowPro Elite for the Troopy project and you can revisit this video.

    I’d like to know why manufacturers left a little exposed wires near the connections plug or to the connections. Is it safe to tape this so that those wires will not greatly exposed to heat of the engine and also to prevent deterioration?

    • @ShedBuilt
      @ShedBuilt  3 роки тому

      Hey mate, most of the time its because the wiring is redundant and was meant to be used for another model (Deluxe model etc) This is most cases i've seen. In these cases i just cut the wire and heat shrink it shut, you can also use tape just not as secure. Hope this helps

    Thats interior cloth tape, it will soak up mud and oil and go to shit. Theres engine bay cloth tape to use for that, it dosnt look as fury and is oil resistant. Also that braid hold mud and oil and also goes filthy in a 4wd engine bay or underside.

    Why would you care to replace the crimps by a solder? Remove the god damn wire altogether and replace it with a new one. If the wiring is old and dried out, there's no point salvaging it with a cheap reparation, replace the wire and it's good to go for another thirty years. Rewiring is tedious as hell, and if you found the courage to rewire the whole thing just don't go cheap on it because it's not something you can easily have access to, so do it right while you're at it.
    I think the proper way to do it, but also quite possibly the most tedious one, is to unwrap the old wiring harness, buy new connectors, slightly larger gauges wires, and use the old harness as a live diagram to do a fresh one out of nothing. In short, creating a wiring harness from scratch using thicker gauges wires so you have a fresh and more secure harness.

  • @Lmiller201
    @Lmiller201 3 роки тому +2

    solder?!? noooo. i will not even use the connectors with the low temp solder.
    soldering makes a great connection, however, it does not allow the wires to flex with the constant vibration a vehicle puts out. a correctly crimped connector will make just as good of a connection as a soldered joint. using good quality heat shrink will provide the needed stress relief.
    doubt me? where are the soldered connections in a factory wiring harness? if soldering was superior, then every connector would be done with solder.
    leave the soldering to the computer geeks
