Creat video Garrett thank you for all this great information and I read your comments going to relocate my magnetic relay to my firewall and make new wires. Going to tackle my harness soon.
Follow the wire to the alternator and check under the sheet metal cover on it for a short. If it isn't that then either the alternator itself or the voltage regulator is shorted.
I have found out on top of the relay that the other lug is a direct ground. When my m35 didn't crank, it was rust under the bell-shaped cap to relay housing. I just removed the nut and bell, cleaned the rust off for a good ground. Now, the relay works fine without buying a new one.
Would a bad magnetic starter relay also affect service lights? I'm troubleshooting an issue with my 54 m108 that I thought was a ground issue but it sounds exactly as you described with the magnetic starter relay. I turn the power switch on, gauges all get power, voltage is good, but absolutely nothing on the starter button. But service lights don't work either. Batteries are good, ground cable is new in the battery box, dogbone is new. Have to check some more grounds and clean the starter terminals, but running out of ideas. Hoping I don't have to replace the whole wiring harness. thx!
No, you have two separate problems there. You almost certainly have a bad light switch and your starter switch is probably bad as well. Unplug the two pin connector off the back of your starter button and jump the terminals in the plug with a pair of needlenose pliers. If the starter kicks in you know your button is bad.
Man Im no mechanic but the last two times I've ran my wires to my starter on my 83 C10 the damn thing caught on fire like directly after I started the truck , now I'm like you bcuz I don't know where the wires go either and damn near convinced that I need to simply buy a whole new wiring harness with the fuse box and all , and run it all brand new but let's say I didn't and wanted to repatch the burnt ends what causes a starter to catch fire like that

Hey I got a question for ya, I’ve got a 1971 and anytime I hook the alternator wire up it arks real bad

That's great news! I'm sure thousands of these have been thrown away because of that.
this is exactly what i needed. thank you!

Hi if I bridge the the solenoid will the truck crank?
Wonder if it would be a worth while mod to relocate that magnetic relay to the fire wall to keep the heat down?
Yes it is. Many people have done that. Just have to make some new wires up.

Only a direct short to ground or the wire drawing way too much ampreage.
