An interesting issue with stroke and distance, when you have not played a provisional, is that with golf courses as busy as they are it's almost impossible to do. By the time you have searched for your ball for your 3mins, the group behind you is now waiting for you to play and get out of their way from the spot you played your previous shot.
@Stevenewmansa this is why many clubs/courses have implemented the fairly new Model Local Rule that lets you Drop on the nearest Edge of the Fairway for a 2 Stroke Penalty. The 2 Strokes equalizes a Provisional Ball played from the original Distance.
The thing to add about deciding on Known or Virtually Certain (KVC) is that 95% judgement depends on taking in all readily available information. That could be the terrain features, the trajectory of the ball and how much energy you estimate it had, whether you were looking into the sun, the testimony of any other competitors or spectators, the wind strength, etc. If taking all readily available information into account you believe you meet that 95% threshold, then you have KVC. (Note - not saying this needs to take a long time - just be cognizant you're considering all easily ascertainable factors)
Question: In the case of where you stuffed the 4 iron out of bounds from the impossible rough, where would you then take your penalty drop from? Back into that spot?
what's to stop a dodgy golfer from turning slope mode on/off during a round. Also as a smoker when wind blows my smoke around does that count as artificially testing wind direction
In regards to rule 4, I’ve seen videos (not sure if on this channel) where the ball is on the cart path side of a tree stopping traditional swing so player flips the club to hit with their non-dominant hand so that there feet are on the cart path and they get a drop. From the description of rule 4, that is breaking the rule but the video swore that it was legal to do.
For the situation of standing on the path, wouldn't your nearest point of total relief from the path be further into the rough and not on the side closer to the fairway / hole, so this would not be an advantage ?
You're spot on. If nearest point of relief is in the rough then that is where the drop has to be taken - It might well not be an advantage. Sometimes people forget that I think.
In match play. It's fine to give your playing partner in four ball or foursomes advice.... In singles match play the advice rule applies. But, if your opponent has a similar putt to you and gives you the line, that's fine - that's just rub of the green.
What would the rule be if we play a shot, know where it has gone, maybe just in the first cut and someone walks past and is suspected of picking up our ball?
As a Smoker, Tobacco Products, and now Vapes, are considered "Equipment", so not legal to use for "wind", thus no different than the Hankie or Ribbon as mentioned here.
So what about the famous Mickelson clip where he asks the young boy if he should go for the 3 wood shot, the boy says yes, Mickelson hits it and says the boy he can caddy for him anytime. Are we saying he should have got a penalty?😂
Conclusion! Golf rules need rewriting and simplified... especially as stroke play & matchplay have different interpretations of the same rules... It's ridiculous.....
@Astro_Gardener Courtesy, for if they find a Ball during a Search they know what they are looking for. The Imperative is for you to be able to accurately Tell the Difference between the Original Ball and the Provisional Ball if they end up close to each other.
It doesn’t. In the same way it doesn’t tell what the weather is. It uses forecasts of the direction and weather. If we believed the weather app and its sunny forecast, we would have standing in the rain for our BBQ at the weekend, we didn’t get wet because we looked outside and saw the rain.
@jamesroberts7489 information about location of Penalty Areas and OB comes under "Public Information" and is NOT "Giving Advice". Same goes for things such as "this is a Dogleg Left Hole", or "I am standing on the 150 Yard Marker." See the USGA/R&A Definition of 'Advice'.

That's why it's much better to play Stableford rather than Stroke. You can take zero points on the hole and move to the next tee
How many golf balls were lost in the making of this video? 😂. Great content guys. I love geeking out on stuff like this.

Golf monthly do a rules vide without mentioning the "say it's a provisional ball" rule challenge (impossible)

Clearly unreasonable.
It would be unreasonable if they then didn’t play the shot with the swing they used to get relief

With the Scenario shown here, you are Correct because of the Width of that Path and Direction of Play on the Hole.
You're spot on. If nearest point of relief is in the rough then that is where the drop has to be taken - It might well not be an advantage. Sometimes people forget that I think.
"And you might want to play another!" Golf summed up in one concise sentence. 🤣
Does the advice rule count in match play situations too? What about showing a player what line to putt on?

@nevillecoleske6368 OK with your Partner, but not with Opponents.
If you’re not in competition, play your own rules with your mates. It is much better !
What would the rule be if we play a shot, know where it has gone, maybe just in the first cut and someone walks past and is suspected of picking up our ball?
Why are both lids of the Aga open?
Is that why people smoke cigars while playing, to determining wind?

The advice rule is exceedingly specific.
If my ball by most likely lands on the fairway and suck in the Ground because og wet conditions and i vant find it do i g’et relief.
So what about the famous Mickelson clip where he asks the young boy if he should go for the 3 wood shot, the boy says yes, Mickelson hits it and says the boy he can caddy for him anytime. Are we saying he should have got a penalty?😂
Ha. I think he probably technically should!
@Deadhorseflogger That was a Practice Day so no penalty there because Phil wasn't playing for Score.
Nothing about these rules are vague. lol
Conclusion! Golf rules need rewriting and simplified... especially as stroke play & matchplay have different interpretations of the same rules... It's ridiculous.....
Regarding rule #2: I heard that smoke from a cigar or cigarette is allowable under the rules. Is this true?
@lokidecat you can't stand there and blow a cloud of smoke to test the wind.
Tobacco products, vapes too, are considered part of your equipment.
When taking a provisional ball, I thought you should tell your playing partners what ball you are using?
You don't have to. But you do have to be able to identify your ball.
@Astro_Gardener Courtesy, for if they find a Ball during a Search they know what they are looking for.

@@apaulmcdonough2170 Yup. That's it, spot on.
How about using my Apple Watch that tells me the wind direction?
It doesn’t. In the same way it doesn’t tell what the weather is. It uses forecasts of the direction and weather. If we believed the weather app and its sunny forecast, we would have standing in the rain for our BBQ at the weekend, we didn’t get wet because we looked outside and saw the rain.
That's fine. It's using weather forecasting which is public information so - go ahead!
So if somebody tells me not to hit it in the water or OB thats advise and they can be penalised?
@@pudwellion No.
I’d expect yes, you may or may not know that there is water or ob on that hole. It could change your shot or club choice.

@@apaulmcdonough2170 fair point, this is definitely a rule id never paid any attention to.
I dont want anyone im playing golf with touching my equipment
Agreed!
@@JM19649 definitely a stroke penalty
