17. should do more of these. its one of the things golfers think they know but do not, thats the rules. golfers just seam to pick them up as they play. read the book one hour a week is good enough
Just completed my level 2 rules exam (Feb) so this was a great refresher. Managed 20/20 so very pleased that I’ve remembered enough of the rules despite not playing for weeks. Great YT channel especially the rules... 😀
I missed 2. I'm kind of proud of that. In 1997 I scored 100% on the PGA of America's Rules Test. But the rules of golf are fluid. Ever evolving into being more and more thorough and complete. The PGA Head Professional I was working under at the time was Jeff Taylor. Something he told me to have in the forefront of my mind when determining the rules of golf. "The Rules of Golf were never intended to harm the player, rather their purpose is to protect the field. " Must have worked, I killed it !! Lol...
13 of 20. Great quiz. I really enjoy the rules series you do. It's a tremendous help (although it appears I may need to pay closer attention to them when watched.) I recently played in a tournament and was paired with a person who had recently completed a USGA rules course. He was an incredibly invaluable resource, as he was able to offer direction on options in a variety of situations. It made me much more interested in having a more comprehensive understanding of the rules.
Quiz very helpful. training important to get familiar with rules. 16/20 have to keep learning. Thanks for a new quiz were we can push one of the alternatives button and at the end get our result
I didn't keep track, but this quiz did answer some questions I've always had - one was the one where the ball came to rest against the flagstick and the other was about practicing putting and chipping after finishing a hole - something I've always done (when the next tee was full) but always worried that someone would yell at me. Now I can say, "read rule 5.5b." Rule 5.5b DOES, however, have the appended admonition, "But such practice strokes must not be made from a bunker and must not unreasonably delay play (see Rule 5.6a)" - which makes sense. I only ever do it if there's no one closely following. Good info, thanks.
Great video, i scores 16/20. Regarding Q19 - impact tape/sticker on the club face resulting in the club being deemed a non confirming club due to an external attachment I was wondering if that then also effect things such as lead tape which players frequently use and also lots of people put a band of durable tape around their shafts to prevent bag rub on the shaft, can anyone enlighten me as to whether this constitutes the same infringement of the rules or not..?
wayne frost I looked it up “Is lead tape allowed? The USGA stipulates in Rule 14-3 that “Lead tape may be applied to the head or shaft of the club for the purpose of adding weight (see Decisions 4-1/4 and 4-2/0.5)”.Aug 9, 2019” -golf digest
Lorne Willison I’m pretty sure you can as long as it’s applied before the round and dose not come off until after the round because if you look at the tour vokeys they have a guy who puts lead tape on their wedges and stamps logos into them so I’m pretty sure it’s legal
12, sticker on club face was interesting, I had a lesson a few months back and my pro added the dots for GC Quad, I've not removed them so should I be disqualified from every competitive round since???
Great Question. For "Formal Competition", I imagine those GC Quad Dots do make the Club non-conforming, because of the possibility of a Dot between Ball and Face, with an off center strike.
Can't wait to show a fellow golfer number 11, before lock down this happened to me in a comp and a fellow golfer said I had to play it as it lies (plugged in the face) I tried to hit it and obviously had a disaster hole,, :/ but glad to know now :)
Remember the Difference here is the Ball was Embedded in the Grass Area ABOVE the Bunker. A Ball Embedded in the Sand Face would either have to be played as it lies, or use a Penalty Relief option.
Great video, I enjoyed that. However, number 17 is a bit difficult, a player can strike the sand in anger but can’t take a practice swing that touches the sand. What if a do a swiping strike in anger ? it would look like practice swing, wouldn’t it ? Steve
19, just got the loose impediment used to mark ball on green wrong. May have been worth noting that the quiz is based on the extant rules as implemented 1 Jan 2019. Also could be useful to say where a rule was changed in 2019 for some people who have not yet bothered to acquaint themselves with the latest version, e.g. grounding club in penalty areas, damaged clubs, hitting sand in bunker in anger. Also worth noting that practising chipping and putting between holes is only permissible if it does not unreasonably delay play.
Only got 11 correct, and one was a bit of a guess. Been golfing for 35 years and thought I knew more. Some rules are less punitive than I thought. I probably penalized myself in the past when I didn't need to. Signed up to be a rules official in Michigan (GAM) but now, not as confident as I was when I signed up. Lots of homework to do :(
So where do you place the embedded ball just above the bunker? Nearest point of relief, no closer to hole, on the same area of the course-so either on the side of, or behind the bunker?
Regarding Q15, it might be better if the fact that the flagsick is specified as having been removed from the hole and is lying on the ground. I understood that the flagstick had been removed from the hole after the player had played his shot.
1 got 6 wrong.. great quiz. I blew the one will the embedded ball :(. Has the rule involving the moving of the flagstick while someone is putting changed? At one time I'm sure it was a two stroke penalty.
Since 2019, a Flagstick may be left in the Hole during Putting. A Flagstick lying on the Green is considered a Moveable Obstruction, and may be lifted, or moved out of the way of a Rolling Ball. *I believe* IF a putted Ball (that was originally on the Green) strikes a removed Flagstick, the Original Putt is Replayed with NO Penalty.
Little late but since it is a man-made object and interferes with the line to the hole he is allowed free relief no closer to the hole and i think 2 club lengths with the club that you would reasonably use next to get closer to the hole. I.e. you couldn't use a driver if you are 100 yds out.
My score was 18 out of 20 and one of those was just the number of penalty strokes I said one and it was two for touching the sand in the backswing....wonder how many people do that in a round and it goes without penalty never mind one???? The other was the ball marker question i thought that you could leave something there but as you point out it must be artificial . Great quiz and good to get the answers straight after it is a good way of leaning...thanks for your efforts fantastic magazine.
Question 7: If one was to touch the sand on the backswing but hole out the shot (continuing the full swing) does the hole out count with the two-stroke penalty or do you have to put the ball back and replay the shot? Please include the reference. Thank you
The Difference here is the specified "Attached Divot" . A completely unattached Divot is a Loose Impediment and can be removed as long as the Ball doesn't Move.
Only 11/20. Funny I was a 1ST Team All-American in college but medicine has kept me from playing much at all for the past 30 years. Retired in march...did not want to keep wearing all the Covid-19 protection equipment etc. Hopefully retirement improves my golf game. I last played when the pin had to be out of the hole or tended.
@@GolfMonthly yes I have been re-accredited for the new rules but the old level 2 exam was open book. New one not. However I still passed. Usually on the course you you need to find the answer to show the player.
14/20, and I've never played golf lol. I just watched some videos about the ruling. 4:27 I thought that this is legal now? Or is it just in the penalty areas?
I play 4 days a week and have played for some 60 years. I got abut half right. I did not count but I got way more wrong than I thought. I thought that you could not use a damaged club during a round if you caused the damage. I thought that the person who asked for advice got the penalty. I thought that you could mark a ball with a leaf or twig that was on the green if you did not have a ball marker available. Thanks for the review.
I just got named Rules Chair for our ladies league and after taking this quiz I have to wonder why they chose me?🥴. I need a lot of studying. More quizzes please.
17/20, so not too bad. I have a question. In question 20, if, when he fell into the bunker he had a) touched his ball or b) improved his stance, what would the penalty have been?
16 out of 20. I should have got Question 11 right, I presume the nearest reference point for relief would be behind the bunker? However, not sure about Question 16 with regard to the ball marker. I have recently bought the R & A Rule book and cannot find any reference to the fact that ball markers must be artificial. Could someone enlighten me? I also thought it would make sense to restore the stance in a bunker (Q.20) since it was accidently disturbed. Similar to replacing a ball on the green if it is accidentally moved. Good quiz and an enjoyable way to brush up on the rules.
12 so room for improvement - I didn't think you were allowed to ground the club in a penalty area though (question 2) - has that rule changed? Good refresher - you should do more of these.
Q11 is a stinker, at what point is the general hazard no longer a hazard? At Out course we have a sharp edge to the bunker and then about an 8” vertical (soil) face, balls have been know to plug in that bit of soil, so is that in the bunker, the face of the bunker or general area.
heres one.. if a ball is plugged but on the day there is no lift clean and place or replace, is the player allowed to do so even if ball is plugged in mud or sometimes wet grass or soft grass? and same for ball plugged on the green?
Achieved 20/20. My comment would be that you should consider adding more detail to your commentary like the size and location of the Relief Area. I see too many players interpreting Free Relief and the spot for their Reference Point a little too liberally. For example, in your sixth question you cite getting Free Relief from an Immoveable Obstruction based on the fact that the sign interferes with his stroke. I see too many players interpreting the Reference Point for their stance as usually being either left or right of the Immoveable Obstruction and hence perhaps a couple of feet away from where their ball was whereas the Nearest Point of Relief could be 2 inches Back-on-Line. Once you have identified your Nearest Point of Relief, mark it and then you have a one club-length, no closer to the pin Relief Area.
19/20 I didn’t know that you could not restore the bunker lie after a player falls. Question, how can you tell if any part of the ball is below the hole when leaning up against the flag stick? I mean what if we decide that no part of the ball is not below the level of the hole, how would you mark it? Now that we’re allowed to leave the flagstick in the hole, I’ve always considered the ball holed even when it just touches the flagstick, knowing that if the flagstick is moved the ball would fall in the hole.
Im a very honest golfer and know the rules like the back of my hand. I got 21 correct.
Black Jack! hahaha

That is just brilliant. Well done.

19/20 - Useful review of common rules
Wow! I suck at the rules of golf. I got a bunch of them wrong, but I learned a few things. Thanks.
Great video. Could you please do a video on rules that are different between PGA/USGA and the R&A.
Hi Dan - they are the same. The USGA and The R&A produce the rule book together
PGA plays by USGA / R&A Rules.
The PGA does employ some Local Rules due to Spectators, and Temporary Structures for Tournament and Television.
14 more of these this is great 👍

only 11 correct. thought I knew more. Keep this coming. Even basic drop rules, or more common ones we come across.
13: room for improvement! Enjoyed it, learnt from it. More please.

18 of 20, wish my playing partners would take the test, a refresher on the rules could be helpful.
16/20. A very relevant quiz, more of them please.
These are great & make some more about RED vs Yellow Stakes & out of bounds options.
Loved it .. I learned a lot here. I know there is a lot more to learn.
15 right answers. Good information, and a good one to repeat with other questions.
Thanks Anthony!

For "Formal Competition", I imagine those GC Quad Dots do make the Club non-conforming, because of the possibility of a Dot between Ball and Face, with an off center strike.
Fantastic quiz Neil!! Got 15/20. Have a question on #19. Can I use a foot spray to understand the impact?
NOT during Play.
Okay on the Practice Tee / Range.
Remember to clean the Powder off before using it on the First Tee.

Excellent stuff Neil and really useful, which my golf pals will be checking out. Question 14 was a surprise as thought this was a complete taboo.
Great. Thanks Mark!
There were definitely a few surprises in terms of the ruling. Thank you
You're very welcome
17 of 20, good quiz, was a rules official at one time
15/20, very good quiz, a good refresher.
Good reminders of those rules. I guessed wrong with quite some of rules. Interesting.

What if a do a swiping strike in anger ? it would look like practice swing, wouldn’t it ? Steve
You would be questioned on "intent", and most likely forgiven for your anger, rather than Penalized for "testing the sand".
love the Quiz, got all but #11, good to know as I would have played it as it lies, now I can have relief, stay safe, from Kansas usa

So where do you place the embedded ball just above the bunker? Nearest point of relief, no closer to hole, on the same area of the course-so either on the side of, or behind the bunker?
I’m glad I got most of these correct, as I’m going to be playing in my first tourneys this summer; that is if they go on...

11 out of 20 with the potential for 1 more that I did know but answered incorrectly . Good quiz … Thanks
I did answer most of the rules as I had seen some videos before, actually it's more of logic than rigidity.

Is the #14 putting practice an R&A only rule or also USGA? Why don't more pros take extra practice putts, I only see this done in match play.

heres one.. if a ball is plugged but on the day there is no lift clean and place or replace, is the player allowed to do so even if ball is plugged in mud or sometimes wet grass or soft grass? and same for ball plugged on the green?
You can remove your ball from an embedded lie without penalty unless you are in a bunker or penalty area
13 .A few extradinary ones .Practice putting I didn't think that was allowed
For question #17, couldn't the striking of the sand be seen as testing the condition of the bunker?

19/20 I didn’t know that you could not restore the bunker lie after a player falls. Question, how can you tell if any part of the ball is below the hole when leaning up against the flag stick? I mean what if we decide that no part of the ball is not below the level of the hole, how would you mark it? Now that we’re allowed to leave the flagstick in the hole, I’ve always considered the ball holed even when it just touches the flagstick, knowing that if the flagstick is moved the ball would fall in the hole.
