Ah, the age-old battle between innerspring mattresses and memory foam mattresses. Philosophers and poets have pondered their benefits and drawbacks.
Okay, that’s a bit much. We’re just talking about mattresses here. Still, this is a question that has stumped many a mattress shopper: innerspring or memory foam?
Well, relax. It’s really not too tough. First off, there are some noticeable differences between #innerspring and memory foam mattresses.
Spring mattresses are bouncier than memory foam mattresses, so sleepers rest more on top of the mattress instead of sinking. Memory foams let sleepers slowly sink into the surface of the mattress.
Because of this, it should be easier to move around on an innerspring mattress. Some people complain that they get stuck in memory foam mattresses.
Finally, innerspring mattresses are more breathable than #memoryfoam mattresses. The coils leave a lot of room for air to flow through the mattress.
For more information about the differences between innerspring and memory foam, check out the written article: www.mattressclarity.com/blog/...
You’re watching Marten Carlson, staff writer and reviewer at Mattress Clarity.
So, who should pick an innerspring mattress?
Of course, those who want to sleep on top of their mattress and move around easily are going to love an innerspring mattress. Also, this type should be a better mattress for heavy people and those who need more support.
Sleep hot? Innerspring mattresses are usually cooler sleeping mattresses.
    Now, what about memory foam?
This should be a better mattress for side sleepers. Memory foam should relieve pressure on areas like the shoulders and hips. Memory foam should also be better for people with pain issues.
Sleep with a partner? Memory foam is the way to go. It isolates motion and makes for a better mattress for couples.

@@geetarman what you guys need is either a hybrid or a "firm foam" mattress...it still has that memory foam feeling, but it also has better support. And wont leave a "hole" where you sleep, and also wont sink either.

@@geetarman thats what im saying tho, the problem with the memory foam is that you "sink" and thats the reason it feels like youre on the floor. That happened to me as well, especially cause i had a wooden pallet base under it, so it hurt after 2 weeks. Thats why im saying the hybrid and firm matress doesnt have that problem cause it has coils inside, those dont sink or leave a "hole"...it actually supports you better.

Great video! I went from a spring mattress to a foam and I definitely regretted it. I’m 350 and every time I had to get up off a foam mattress I practically had to fight it to get up. It was hard to turn over from one side to the other. I slept hotter and eventually the foam wore down on the side I got up on every time to the point that I felt like I was going to roll off that side all the time. So my humble opinion, if your heavyset, you do not want a foam mattress!

After sleeping in spring bed for at least 20 years, I wanted to give memory foam a try since this era hype it up so much as it give you modern sleep. I choice the expensive 12 inch cool gel infuse copper memory foam and I suffer for a year sleeping in it until I give up and go back to spring bed. Some of the bad things about memory that I hate for a 150 lb person is:
    1. No support in the bottom so you feel like sinking into the mattress
    2. Back pain every day in which leave no pleasure in sleeping due to your bottom is heavier than your top so your spine is bent in a downward position everyday and leaves pain in your back once you get up in the morning
    3. It gets hot and musky and it doesn’t help when you try to change your body position especially when the bed made a snow angle shape out of you and when you change the shape, it try to fight back in which leave you discomfort
    4. It hard to get up every morning due to your body get sink into your bed for 8+ hours straight that you feel like you been wrap into a caccoon and your trying to break out of the shell by wasting half of your energy of the day getting out of the bed
    5. One of the thing I like about my old spring bed is that I can sit and lie in my bed for hours and be on my phone or watch a movie on the TV, memory foam DOES NOT DO THAT. The more hours you sit in your bed, the more discomfort you get due to your whole body sinking into the bed and when you try to lay down to sleep, you CANT because you have a giant ass hole in the middle in which leave a lot of discomfort in lying down and sitting on the bed easily. At least spring bed, it keeps its form no matter if your sit & laydown afterward
    6. Sometime if you sleep wrong, your body left paralyze on one side due to all the pressure your body try to keep its form while you sleep and every morning, you wake up with sharping needle in your body
    7. Nothing comes good in getting a memory foam mattress, whoever invented it and claim to be the best modern mattress you can sleep is a lie and not worth the money
    8. After you purchase the mattress, when it is delivered to you. It will be tightly wrap in a plastic like a rolling mat. After open it, it takes 30 days so it to get a bit harden to sleep. If you sleep in the mattress before 30 days of opening, your in a whole of back pain
So after you read all this, please consider getting a spring mattress . It will save you the suffering that I endure in my journey.

      I agree with you 100%
Been sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic Prima Teal Mattress (queen size) coming up on 4 years next month and I hate it. Which is unfortunate because it currently retails for $3500 CAD so you'd think it would be more durable.
For reference, I am only 5'10" 150lbs and would consider that on the smaller side of average.
I sleep on my side and wake up every morning with extreme lower back pain, sometimes hip pain, and sometimes one arm will be completely numb.
I'm now watching as many videos as I can to compare traditional coil vs pocket coil and I am hearing some people say pocket coils are trash but the salespeople say pocket coils are best.... 🤔
When sitting in my bed at night I will sink into the memory foam pretty deep, not sure how my small frame and body weight can sink this much, can't imagine how a 200lbs+ person would fair on this mattress or even a couple.
And for reference my mattress base is solid wood, 3" slats with 1" gaps so it is incredibly stout as far as structural support.
The search for a new coiled mattress starts now.

You've listed every single issue I'm currently facing with my memory foam mattress I've had for almost two years now. I'm 5'6, 150lbs, pretty small i would say, and relaxing on it a few hours turns into sinking into the abyss by EOD. Sleeping is becoming a nightmare and I damm near flip the thing every other week. Definitely going back to innerspring ASAP. Thank you my friend for sharing!

I'm living this right now - especially your first and second points. I bought a Casper foam mattress, and while it's overall pretty firm, I've noticed that my hips sink deeper into the mattress than the rest of my torso. Through the night, I can feel my spine bending as my hips sink deeper into the mattress. Every morning, I'm now waking up feeling like my spine has been unnaturally bent upwards, leaving me with intense lower and middle back pain.
I know these mattresses have a break in/ adjustment period, but I've had it for about a month now and I can't see how this issue will improve at all. Thankfully, I can take advantage of the trial period and get it exchanged for something else. Perhaps back to innersprings?

This is one of the best vidoes on mattresses I've come accross. Straight to the point, only straight up facts and very simple and well explained. I've been looking for a mattress for a while. Everyone always says get foam but I wasn't able to afford one at the time so I got a mattress with a very thick pillow top. I kept waking up and wasn't able to sleep for hours because of the heat I assumed it was because of tempsture of my room until I stood up. I was suddenly much much cooler. I started reading about hot and cold sleepers. how thick pillow tops trap heat and the best beds for hot sleepers and again I was brought to expensive foam mattresses I thought a foam mattress would fix all of my problems with hot sleeping until now. This video has helped me learn that foam mattress aren't the best for everyone and expecically not hot sleepers thanks so much for making this video it really helped!

[11/09/2021] A word of warning: many foam mattresses will settle and compress over time, therefore losing loft, and "springiness", vs coil spring, or continuous coil mattresses; which mechanically tend to be more robust and durable. So you may be replacing a foam mattress sooner than a spring mattress.

I'm a big guy and always loved a firm spring mattress, loved the resistance. Until I tried a memory foam mattress, never went back to spring. So comfortable. Another big difference between spring and foam, in a spring mattress, if you fall asleep with your arms under the pillow, it cuts off your circulation and you wake up with that dead arm with the painful discomfort of blood rushing back into your arm. That never happens on a foam mattress. I'm really happy with my foam mattress but I'm curious to try a hybrid of both memory foam and spring combined.

I think a bed with springs is more for us over foam, neither of us likes to feel stuck or sunk in too much, and with one of us heavier the springs would give us better support. Also the air flow and sleeping cooler is a big plus for us. Neither of us has ever slept on a foam one though so there is always the possibility that we might like it if we tried it.

Some tips for acid reflex people, side sleepers and people with body pains.
I have a 14" memory form. I cut and spray glued some cheep foam to form a wedge to put under the mattress, not sure if you could do this with a spring mattress. This wedge props up the mattress at the wall (since I have no headboard) an extra 15"+/- which allows me to sleep at an incline. This incline forms a gap at the wall which I put pillows in. I then slide up the mattress and put my arm into the gap which relieve my shoulder pain and helps keep me from sliding down the mattress since it's at an incline. If you have hip pain and are a side sleeper and cant do anything else you could cut out some foam so your hip is in the hole, this was tricky to do but did work for me when I had pain from my cholesterol med (I changed meds and have no hip pain now). You could buy a 4" foam to cut the hole in and put it on top of your bed but you might have to buy deeper pocket sheets to fit over both mattresses, a nice 10" mattress and a cheap 4" would be a good match and most sheets would fit? I'm surprised they don't make a memory foam mattresses with removable sections for side sleepers to relieve pressure from body pains.

after bad experience lately while searching for a new mattress i came to these conclusions: 1) visco foam mattress are the worst cause they get hot like an oven in hot humid summer nights and the heat makes me wake up. 2) a too firm mattress gives me pains in my waist which makes me wake up every 2 hours in the middle of dreams. 3) a matteress with "health center"(the center of the mattress being more supportive then its edges like Sealy posturpedic) gave me pains in the top part of my back. 4) a too soft matteress that sink gives back pains. MY CONCLUSION IS: the best mattress for me is the simple good old coil mattress(not pocket coils) not too soft and not too firm WITHOUT visco foam, and just polyurethane-its not hot and it doesnt give me any kind of pain,it does have some pressure on the shoulders but it doesnt bother me much like the cons above

Do you mean bonnell coil is better than the pocket coil one? I’ve been considering which one is better for back pain.

@@harfahsjapanstory4784 i sleep only on the sides and i think pocket coil better if there are also 7 comfort zones in the mattress, but i dont really know cause i have problem in my back so i have pains in my back on soft matteresses and pain in my waist on hard mattresses. i bought a hard mattress with pocket coils, 7 comfort zones and thick layer of latex on top that is good for the back but gives me pain in waist and another matteress with pocket coils, 7 comfort zones and polyurethane(which doesnt heat me at night like visco does)and this one gives a little pain the the back on the left side when i sleep on the right side-i currently have these 2 mattresses...i remember i tried a pocket coil mattress with polyurethane but without comfort zones and when i slept on the sides it gave me such a pain in my arm that i felt my arm fell asleep at night and also pains during the day therefore there must be comfort zones

On a side note, you can stay in control easier after you recieve intense shock or pleasure if you sleep on your back rather than your side.
To be honest I am not sure of the correlation but I hope this helps if anyone was curious.

I'm gonna be buying my first mattress, and I've been sleeping on a inner spring my whole life, I mean it's been good, sometimes it permanently sinks which makes it feel like a boat.
So, should I go for memory foam? Does it last longer than the innerspring?

I am a 145 pound female i find inetersping mattress to be very uncomfortable as it can hurt my hips and I have nerve damage in my ribs so anything that puts pressure on my ribs hurts very badly .I have a thin memory foam mattress 6 inches stacked onto of a 8 inch spring mattress so its bouncy but not Appling pressure to my ribs

I experience numbness on my arms, shoulders, back, rear and legs on whichever side I lay on. With my current 8 inch foam mattress I just sink almost down to the wooden base. Any area of my body I lay on with any pressure goes partly numb from sinking into the mattress.
What kind of spring or hybrid mattress offers the best support to prevent sinking too far, but is still soft enough to not add more pressure causing numbness?
What other suggestions do you have for finding a mattress supportive enough but not too firm?

The most important thing for me is support. I was leaning towards memory foam but now I'm thinking I should stick with coils. I am 187lbs and I stay on my mattress most of the day (I know that may sound bad and like I'm a lazy person...lol. I'm just not as mobile as most ppl). After 2 or 3 years I can get dents in my mattress if I'm not careful and make sure I turn them. So I'm thinking I should stay clear of foam maybe. Maybe a hybrid could work for me, because I am a side sleeper and worry about preasure the older I get. Hummm

    • @Mattressclarity
      @Mattressclarity  4 роки тому +4

Hey Brandon! Yeah, a hybrid might be the way to go for you. You will get more of that balance of comfort and support. As a side sleeper, you definitely want a mattress with a softer comfort layer, possibly containing memory foam.

For me I went from a memory foam to a innerspring with a little bit memory foam. After that I really wanted a memory foam because it was medium firm but still softer than the inner spring. I’m a stomach sleeper but the innerspring is still to hard

I think with memory foam you need the expensive high quality ones, surely the ones people are complaining about are ones where the manufacturers have cut corners on.

Not really, i bought a memory foam from Nectar for $1300 and i had the same problem that i had with a $280 memory foam mattress i had got from Amazon, the high or low end products dont matter...memory foam just isnt for everyone, especially for heavier people. Although i did end up getting a hybrid from Purple and it was much better.

To be honest you can have both, and use best natural material on top with good air-flow materials to counter memory foam disadvantages.
Also this video is kind of old, pocket resorts solve some of the issues they have, like noise and transfer of movement.
