Great playing and great tone. I just picked up a DSL40CR and am learning it. So far, it's been loads of fun. It has to be one of the most versatile all tube combos out there. Thanks again for your review.
Great review! 👏🏼 I love the DSL40CR and have owned it in the past and plan to buy another one in the future. I’ve never played a more expensive Marshall, so I guess I don’t know what I’m missing out on. I play an American Pro ii HSS Miami Blue Strat and love it. Thanks again for being so cool and sharing this awesome video man!
People underestimate this amp. I had the older version and traded it for the newer one. Tone shift is a shit button and the ch 2 OD2 is a bit fizzy but turning the presence down helps a bit. Stock speaker is okay but after a swap I’d be hard pressed to find a better “Swiss army” amp for the money. Definitely loud enough to gig and sounds good in the house without having cops at the door or evil spouse/kid stares. The reverb sucks if you’re looking for a big verb. I think it was meant round out the tone more than an “effect”. Only pedals I use are verb and delay in the loop, it’s all I need… well, and a fuzz but that’s how I roll. New tubes and bias it how you like doesn’t hurt either. I love it and you’ll miss it if you get rid of it.
What did you swap the speaker with?..I have the amp..I'm "trying" to like it..Its way to complicated getting sounds quickly..I might trade in for a blues jr.
Great demo of this Amp, I just ordered one of these. I had played one at Guitar Center and even a little bit. I played on it it just sounded really good man!
It's sounds amazing to my ear, I noticed that you cranked mastered and lowered the volume on the Chanel. I do the opposite since playing in apartment at tv volume level but not good sound as you get. I ordered an Notera attenuature to can crank it a bit again at tv volume level. I will use your settings and see if it sounds better for me or not
it is supposed to work either way. but keeping the master way up makes the tubes stay hot and working, so you get the maximum of the volume your dialing. but i don't understand why people have a hard time with low volume settings. volume to 1 and master to about noon was perfect bedroom level on the clean/od1/od2 for me. the crunch has a volume step tho. are the settings shown here worked?
@@gabboucher7898I am still struggling to get the sound you get from mine, my amp doesn't have that tightness on the tone as yours, I bought an attenuator (at 10% volume aka 90% attenuation) and play with gain at 4 vol. at 6.5 master at 6 and using tube screamer pedal (gain 1 Vol. 10 tone 6) on my NUX MG-30 FX pedal to get an acceptable sound. Do you have any OD/Dist pedal on your setup?
@@payamelahian7511 have you tried to dial the volume only with the volume knob? Wich mean master way up, then the level of gain needed for crisp and only than adjust the volume? And no, not using OD nor disto though.
Ive been hemming and hawing over this or the svh 20 plexi. Im moving to a new house and will have a full size basement for a studio. Ive never had a Marshall but love the tones
I’d get a full size amp, I’ve used the small ones, they are good but they need to be pushed hard if you’re playing in a band. It’s do-able. I’d bet the dsl 40 would be a good option with an ext cab.
I checked the plate voltage on mine and it's staggeringly low...around 426v-430v. For 70% dissipation you'd have to bias it to almost 42mv which is insane. You'd be popping Tubes like candy. I've found 37.5mv to 38.5mv seems to be the best area to have it without going overboard at 42mv. One tip though, Do not underbias this amp. Your effects loop will suffer and hate you. By Underbias I mean going like 32mv. It causes the effects loop to not work properly and you'll be getting volume loss as well as treble loss when the effects loop is engaged. If you don't ever use the effects loop then it is what it is lol. There's lots of videos claiming this amp sounds best underbiased and most of them have no idea about the effects loop issue. Great video with great info!
Okay, I just purchased this amp and a pod go and I can’t get any useable sound out of the fx loop using the 4 cable method. Even when cranking up the levels on the pedal. Is the very issue you are describing?
@@kevinlopota3626 kinda sorta, yes. The effects loops on this amp sucks. I tried two different amps of the same model and both had that issue...it's worse when under biased.
Own one love it but it took 3 to get one that worked and didn’t die. Mine is now 2 years old and it pops. So as great as they sound. They’ve had some bad batches. It is one the first batches of the CR.
For use at home the trick is to put the master volumen to the maximum ten and them play with the regular volumen?? thanks!!

Amazing demo and playing! I have DSL20CR. With an atteunator, set the gain half, crank everything to 10 except bass (it should be in between 0-1) and it ROCKS! Cranking the volume makes the fizzyness go away.
Hi, my name is Francesco, I wanted to know is the AUDIO IN section also used to put an mp3 player to play with the backing tracks? If so, how do the backing tracks and guitar feel together? once I had another Marshall with the AUDIO IN section but with the bases the sound of the guitar was not the same, it was uglier and fake, I don't know why. Hi, I hope you can help me, I need it for playing on the street.
People have been asking for that for a LONG time now. They do it with the 20 (which I personally don’t like), but not the 40???? If someone made a shell for it on Reverb, they’d sell a ton of them. Every person I know who hasn’t bought one of these, has done it for that very reason. Short of that, it’s the best amp on the market for the money, IMHO. Ben Funk did a short demo of this amp, for 80’s tones that is spectacular, as ell….👍
Totally. I think any amp with a master volume can be a bedroom amp. Most are a bit twitchy at supper low volumes but I’ve never found it to be a problem. By twitchy I mean the volume goes from nothing to too loud real easily but if you have a steady enough hand you can get that volume just right.
Drop an eq into the loop and use it to control volume if you need to play super quiet. If you have a multi effects then use that. I use a Helix with my tube amps and I use that to control overall volume. It works great. Playing at bedroom volumes is always a compromise but you can still get great tones with a few work arounds.
I really like your videos. Seems we have similar taste. I couldn't help but notice the little Bogner 3534 in the background. I already have the Marshall DSL40cr and was wondering how you thought it compared to the Bogner? I am currently running the DSL to a separate 2x12 cabinet and have been in the market for a head.
I did a video on the Bogner. It was a mixed bag. I ultimately didn’t keep it. Too many options and switches. I could never settle on any combo. I’ve been meaning to make a video of my PRS MT15. It has ended my quest for a low wattage backup. It’s the only low wattage-high gain amp I’ve played that holds up to my liking at stage volumes without breaking a sweat. Thanks for the kind words!
I just bought one and I noticed how easily the lower notes compress.... Is there anyway to tighten up the low end and stop it from compressing so easily??z
Very nice demo! This sounds nice - can I have your opinion? Which combo would you go with, the DSL40CR or the SC20C (JCM 800)? I know the SC20C is nearly twice as much, but the smaller speaker worries me about sounding boxy or something. I was just wondering if you thought it was fuller sounding than the other, and if you may have reconsidered any initial thoughts about it. Thanks for your thoughts!
Totally depends on your needs. The sc20c is a way better investment and sounding amp but less versatile. You’ll need a boost of some kind to get the same kind of gain but I think that’s worth it. The dsl40 can do more tones but not as good at any as the 800s one trick. Plus the 800 is made in England so it’s value will hold a lot better. My personal experience is less is more.
For ryhtm guitars powerr metal chords and cleans is the sc20c better than the dsl40cr ? I dont play solos just heavy rythm metal/punk, reggae here and there. Hoem/ gig purposes
@@EM-km8em I do have both, and my opinion is, yes ... the 800 does do rhythm more to my style. There are literally tons of 80's and early 90s rock bands who used the JCM800. Like another poster here said, the DSL40CR does a lot more - and it cost less too. I mean, I can get great sounds from the 40CR - and it has a huge speaker that sounds authoritative. It has way more gain than the 800 and is a bit less smooth - but if you dial it back and dont go crazy with front end overdrive, it has a crunchy tone too. The 800 though, that's its thing right away.
