I am a planner/stationary overconsumer so I appreciate this a lot. I've been working on putting together a binder of printouts that works right for me, rather than like 4 planners that kind of work
A whole cart?! So pretty and versatile, but I’m so lazy not to mention i never quite know how i want to organize all the information until after i set it down and i can’t keep it consistent cause i try so many systems and make changes all the time that i really just stuff to one or two pens atp. Make myself stop buying crap 😂 i am considering stickers to decorate after the fact though
yesterday i went through a website selling stickers and journaling things, filled a cart, and then today i talked myself out of every single thing in there 😅 Now i'm thinking about a no buy november haha
I have a favorite planner channel that I love for the slow pace and gloomy aesthetics of the videos. Been subscribed for 2+ years. In the past few months, she started making her videos very "stuff" focused and the comment section is always so united in positivity, I haven't had the courage to say anything about that. Last time, she poured halloween trinkets in the envelopes when packing orders, and it caused me physical pain, lol. I want to go back to NOT NOTICING these things.
Shawna, I would love to see you do a video on junk journals! Ever since learning I could just make my own journals out of scraps and old cardboard, I haven't bought a single notebook/sketchbook/etc. However, on the alternate side, junk journaling is trending on TikTok and there has definitely been some overconsumption there which is so strange when it's a hobby meant to use what you have. Thought you might be interested to look into it!
This is my favorite video you've done yet. I like the concept of not just talking about not buying, but showing ways to further one's life by doing just that. I did the exercise alongside you and found the Life Compass exercise valuable. Have been in a rut the past two weeks so it helped me see clearly what was making me so unhappy! I agree, I found some of the questions didn't make sense or resonate with me, but interestingly, different questions than the ones you felt were off. For example, "I have a favorable credit rating" did nothing for me since I have nothing related to my life or goals that I would need a credit rating for. I actually found "I have fun in ways that serve my highest and best self" as valuable, interpreting it as "The work I do towards my current goal is enjoyable to me", I think it couples well with the one above it "I give myself permission to have fun without feeling guilty" meaning "Not all fun needs to be tied to a goal"
Also: - For planners, I just use a kokuyo binder, and refill it with blank high quality maruman paper as I go through it. Have been doing this for years. No need to ever buy a new planner or even look at them. - Started my Sticker use-um-up challenge based on your last video. Ended up not buying the STICKII sticker advent calendar even though I adore the binders they come in. - Lastly, forgot to say but proud of you for prioritizing maxing out your contribution savings accounts. :-)
I am so happy you found this video valuable and it also brings me such glee to hear that you did it alongside me! It's so interesting how the questions provoked different thoughts for each of us and that some of the ones that didn't make sense for me were important for you. Thanks so much for sharing all your thoughts on this!
That part about some people just needing to maintain where they are at as their goal... that's me. I've been on a sobriety journey this year and my only goals are to keep that in the forefront every day and plan my actions and reactions around it. Loving the video so far, thanks Shawna!!
idea for those who have unused planners or used ones that aren't needed... rip out the pages and make your own paper! use the covers to bind a journal or a book you make with the paper. Just sayin, all is not lost ♡♡
I have been making my own planners out of bullet journals for 5 years. This Christmas I'm asking for a beautiful yearly planner that fits my needs I feel like I earned it
I liked power sheets more than Makselife, but I love Plan With Lakens planner the very most!! I love that it’s relatively inexpensive, can be printed as you go at home, and there is a good amount of support, but I don’t feel pigeonholed into having a certain amount or types of goals.
Hi Shawna, just an observation - you seem to be thinking a lot about how you're "supposed to" interpret these questions and what the scores "should" look like, or what others might think of these scores, but the meaning of them & the ranking is totally up to you. If you go back to this exercise later on to compare what's changed, you want to be applying the same lense - so maybe you want to journal a little bit about how you've interpreted each (in a way this video serves that purpose) so that when you go to repeat the exercise you can control for any shift in interpretation?
this is a great idea, especially if how I've interpreted the questions aren't immediately obvious by the question itself or if I've gone ahead and changed some questions
i would love more planning videos from you/goal setting and that kind of thing. i feel like a lot of planning videos are very focused on stickers and washi tapes and stamps and things which is fine, but i’m way more interested in the planning process than the artsy side and that can be hard to find i think
I learned about the eight areas of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, vocational, intelectual, social and financial. I removed emotional and spiritual from the current planning because there were no actionable tasks for that. The remaining 6 are equally loaded at the time being but that might fluctuate once I'm on track with tracking expenses for example, that will remove some things for financial. And btw I have paper planners but now I realize that I need the flexibility that my Notion template (which I designed) provides me. I have stationary worth of 4 years of use, so no, no excuses to buy anything else in a long, long, time. Thanks for keeping inspiring people to go for other resources instead of buying new things.
I use 4 year monthly calendar books to jot down basic notes like appointments or what I do each day and it works well for me. I used one of those during college and it's cool to look back on! So if you want something for very basic planning I highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for walking us through this in such detail- I found it very inspiring. And I love the idea of a couple “practice” months to test things out. Congrats on all the goals you’ve already accomplished!
This is exactly what I needed. I've been journalling for over 10 years now, but been more focused on tracking my specific self improvement goals lately. And bullet journalling. It can work for some people but I really struggled to keep up with the two, 1) bullet journalling nicely and 2) tracking my goals and self improvements. I really can't wait to watch this video! I have the same markers too 🥰
I love the Power Sheets more than Makse Life. I need the detailed guidance to get me through the goal creation process otherwise I will squirrel onto something else and just not finish it. I just can't justify buying it this year and after I saw a complete page-by-page flip through I began recreating the pre-work in my bullet journal. I'm using a Sterling Ink B6 Slim 520 page numbered notebook. The first 49 pages are all PowerSheets and the additional monthly/weekly goals pages will be added within the notebook at the proper times. By "copying" the pages by hand into my notebook I am more vested in starting and completing goal prep and completion. Next year (2026) I don't think I will copy everything like I did this year, but use it as a guide to write through my next notebook.
Wow - did this come at the right time for me! Planners aren’t going to change my executive function challenges with time management and I have really tried (and spent a lot). Thanks for this!!
I hope your allergic reaction clears up so you can feel better soon! 💕I purchase 1 planner a year and use it every day. I’m still very excited to hear a different take on planning!
I love handwriting and making pretty doodles in notebooks but I realised for me it doesn’t guarantee actions. What I’ve done to satisfy my creative itch is only use black ink (haven’t owned a blue pen in years), and all the highlighter colours so while I don’t plan out a monthly or yearly aesthetic, all my notes and lists and scribbles have a unifying style. Oh and I indulge and buy the prettiest notebooks regardless of price, but I’m only allowed two at a time. If there’s a spare notebook at home, it’s not shopping time.
Fixating is great. Overbuying and hoarding is not--you're 100% right that buying isn't doing, and won't guarantee that you DO stuff or that you will use the things you buy. (I acquired most of the planner stickers and pages I own for super duper cheap--less than 50% of a good sale price--from people "destashing." I culled these to donate some to specific sources, and freely share with others.) I'm not giving up the sticker subscriptions I have, but they are stickers I use. I pared down my planner for next year from a Hobonichi Cousin with hundreds of pages I didn't use to a Hobonichi Day-Free of the same size. I use the Makselife companion notebooks, and have them set up in a way that ensures I actually use them (and I enjoy decorating them to match my planner). I super love that you can print their printables and set up your own notebooks of your own choosing. I also moved all of my projects out of my planner and into slimmer notebooks. Going forward, I just need a new planner and fresh notebooks each year--I've got all the other stuff covered.
I definitely agree that fixating on stuff isn't a problem and can be a lot of fun unless you buy things you don't use or overbuy as you say. It seems like you've found the perfect system for you and you know your preferences really well! Both are such wins!
I’m retired and have a very good portfolio. I talked to my financial advisor today and told him I was trying to stay within the amount of money I had withdrawn recently to cover the year. He told me not to worry too much about staying strictly within that budget, that even if I withdrew more I’d still be okay. His last comment to me was to go spend money (not too serious about it). This would be a wonderful excuse to go buy all the things for my bullet journal (which is my new obsession the last couple months) but the “don’t break the chain “ challenge I have in my journal to not spend on unnecessary items is a stronger pull. I am giving myself to “break the chain “ on Black Friday, but I want to avoid the unnecessary spending until then.
I can't live without my planner. and I have to have a paper one to write stuff and keep lists. it's my everything. but, I buy ONE a year and don't buy additional accessories. ends up being $35 that saves my life from a latina artist that I want to support. it's also functional for me and has all the features I want so I DONT feel bad about it. I dont understand when people buy the huge insert ones or millions of stickers if they won't use them
I think these handouts have the flexibility for you to add in the things you want, like your why. I also remember there being more pre-work pages in their actual product that they don’t include in the free printables so I’m not sure your getting the most fair depredation of the product. But a lot of it is pretty similar to cultivate what matters. It’s more targeted though because makselife is made by a certified life coach. Another adjustment you can make is to dump the assessment sheet, just score yourself without it, and reflect on why you feel that’s your score. Lastly, you don’t need to have goals in all areas. You can still score those areas if you want. In those areas, make your goal to maintain and/or use that area to document your reflection about the area, what you’re grateful for in that area, what you’ve learned in that area (for each check in). Make the focus monitoring and not movement. 1. It removes the pressure of doing. 2. It fills the space. 3. If you decide later in the year or next year that you do want to focus on something in that area you’ll likely have an incredibly clear understanding of your why. I’ve used both Makselife and Cultivate What Matters. They both get you to the same place. I still have both so I’ll be using them as a guide for getting my goals together but in one of the millions of notebooks I have. Saving money and using what I have. Last thing (for real this time), it might be worth a quick google search for both of those companies. This is the first video of yours I’ve seen so I have no idea of your beliefs or leanings but CWM has very specific leanings that don’t work for everyone. It may be something you want to be aware of before purchasing. Congrats on your house goal! Very inspiring!
I agree that some of the assessment statements don’t make sense to me. So ended up eliminating those and averaged the scores. I think I may make up my own assessment questions that make sense to me.
I also tried the Makse System last year and found the number of categories too many. I reduced and rearranged it to four: self, community, health, home/finances
I got really hooked on planner stuff and now am drowning in stuff. I want to move to digital planning and have all I need to do that. Now just need to purge my physical stuff. I don’t keep planners etc once I’m done with them so I don’t see the need for the physical stuff anymore. I love my supplies but I don’t need it all. I’m planning to go through it all and really determine if it’s something I’ll need and use. It’s going to take forever lol
I recently ordered a STUPID amount of those fashion girl stickers. I feel crazy for doing it, yet I've been taking screen grabs of them in journal flip throughs for ages now. I'm certain I'll enjoy them and use them and I have friends I can share it gift some to. But I still feel crazy. Just my way of agreeing with you about the urge to buy.
I think I can try bullet journaling on a plain notebook in 2026 (have already purchased a planner for 2025 and I AM GOING TO USE IT). I’ve failed bullet journaling twice because at the time I was horribly unorganized and was too new to planning to know what works for me. But I’ve been using structured planners for a few years and have a better idea now. Guess I can try again. You can always purchase a pre-printed planner deeper in the year (oftentimes with discounts) if bullet journal doesn’t work.
I would like to save more, but I have found that I lack a savings goal to have the extra motivation. (To be clear, I already have 3 saving categories: retirement, home maintenance and emergency/regular savings). I was really good at just piling up money in the past, but now I feel like lifestyle creep is getting to me. I also don't feel like I'm in the mental space to do a no buy, even though I would like the challenge. My plan is to have a spending journal were I record all the non essential items I buy and maybe even rate them or evaluate their usage. I have been trying this in my regular planner, but I don't feel it was done much for my mindset yet
i use a bullet journal and i have like 2 highlighters and 1 pen and a ruler, and its been working alright although i havent been staying consistent lately
Hi, technical note in case you plan to do more overhead, as a headphone user the bass thud when your hand hits the table sometimes was difficult to listen through 😅 I almost stopped watching. Not sure if you can avoid it with your set up, but it would be nice😊. Thanks for the video
fr like why'd they have to start advertising 2025 planners in AUGUST like bro the year is barely half done?? its like the holiday sales creep but no other dates exist to stop it creeping so far into the year
I am borrowing ideas from all the systems and creating something that works for me. Maybe it is just me but there is not one system that works for everyone.
@@amandak.4246 no I actually didn’t! I think I have a shopping problem and overconsume a lot of things (trying not to) and I also love planners and this is the type of category I never thought one can overconsume haha I meant I do get all the stickers and pens maybe but not the planners I didn’t know it’s a thing!
@@ekaterinasabirova1971some call it "planner hopping" - no planner is ever 100% perfect, so people buy the next one that has this or that new layout or sth, in search of finding "the one" that will last. Or for me as a bullet journal girly, my problem is: i see pretty notebook, i want pretty notebook (swear i will use them all... one day...)
I would've loved to watch this video, but the constant thumping is really difficult to listen to for me. It's not you--I'm just overly sensitive to that stuff. Anyone else feel me?
Congratulations on your goal setting and exceeding/meeting them too! I love your content and would love to see your financial/consumption talks with the UA-cam channel The Financial Diet. They need you feature on there! All the best, Shawna💕💕
loved this video so much! I was just wondering if you’re going to keep bullet journaling or has it stopped working for you? would love to see more planning videos in the future!
yes, it's still working for me! I don't bullet journal 365 days a year. I'm ok with not bullet journaling for a few weeks or months. I didn't use it this summer because I really didn't feel like I needed it. I picked it back up this fall when things got busier again. This is what I mean by it works for me. It fits my rhythms and it doesn't take much effort to start up again as I just set up a new page like I would if I was already doing it.
I am a planner/stationary overconsumer so I appreciate this a lot. I've been working on putting together a binder of printouts that works right for me, rather than like 4 planners that kind of work
this sounds like a great idea! You can test it out for a month and see how it goes and then adjust for a few months at a time!
I got the notification for this video as I was watching a reel my friend sent me about restocking a stationery cart 😅
That sounds like youtube intervention haha

But this next planner will really change my life amd habits! /s 😭
Me: This makes so much sense.
Also Me: OOO! THOSE ARE BOOKISH STICKERS!!
A tax free HOME SAVINGS ACCOUNT!? can we get that in America!!!!?? Dang Canada you're doing sonething right!

I have so many abandoned planners. I start off with really good intentions😂
this is so me too I totally relate 😂
Girl, I already spent hundreds on several planners and journals for 2025 😭
fr like why'd they have to start advertising 2025 planners in AUGUST like bro the year is barely half done?? its like the holiday sales creep but no other dates exist to stop it creeping so far into the year
nooooooo
exactly!! Why are we launching stuff for January 2025 in August!!
I am borrowing ideas from all the systems and creating something that works for me. Maybe it is just me but there is not one system that works for everyone.
I've got so many journals and I hardly even do it anymore 😢
Do people actually plan their lives like this?
Never heard about planner overconsumption haha you buy a planner once a year 😮
@@ekaterinasabirova1971 And people buy tons of stickers for each separate month and holiday, and special writing utensils, and charms and decorations.
lol you've never seen all the videos of people (mainly women) buying a bunch of planners each year, chasing "planner peace"?
У меня только в этом году планеров-блокнотов штук 10 было 💀

All the best, Shawna💕💕
thank you so much!!
loved this video so much!
