  • It’s April 1, but don't be fooled, this camera rules. Can’t believe this camera is nearly 20 years old already! These features were revolutionary at the time and many modern cameras still haven’t captured this complete of a package in their latest models.

    I loved this camera. Shot hours of footage with it. A great upgrade to it's older sister, the DVX100.

    Ah, I remember when this was a $5000 camera. Now they go for around $300 on ebay! I still have one from the old days, and I am thinking of using it as a teaching tool for kids (hard to find super cheap or older cameras that allow you to monitor audio with headphones). What I'm trying to figure out is if the SD card slot on the side actually works for recording video? If not, why would they include that?? I'm definitely not trying to deal with P2 cards in 2024, would rather go back to tapes lol. Great video, awesome to see someone so stoked on this camera!! Subscribed! :)

    Bought this camera circa 2008 and also git 2 32gb P2 cards and I spent over 8k for that setup and later dropped another $500 for a P2 card reader but man for the time it was the only way to shoot HD digital video that was ready for SFX work for under 10K. Consumer MP4 cameras existed but the compression took a lot more CPU and Computers were not up to the task at the time, The HVX200 allowed me to layer Green screen and live tracks with not much fuss and it was run and gun unlike today's mirrorless cameras. After 8years it broke and I decided to move on and never found a camera I liked better until I got a Panasonic S5II but I still miss the form factor of the HVX200.
    I have a lot of stock green footage that was shot on the HVX200 and to this day I occasionally use a clip for a project and it holds up and with I can them to work in a my DCI 4K workflow.

    I recently bought this camera again, which I already had... does anyone have a good solution for how to use it on a field monitor with an HDMI input? The camera's LCD is pretty bad, sometimes you can't even see whether you've focused well. There are so many converter variants but which one is the best?!

    • @thomasmoormann2832
      @thomasmoormann2832 3 місяці тому

      There is only an analog-HD-out. That is located near the S-Video / CVBS-Connector as a Multipin-Connector. I was lucky to get those cables, just look for the compatible ones from Canon. They work. Then you have to have a converter from Analog -> SDI / HDMI. I use one from Blackmagic-Design. The downside of this all is, the analog output is very noisy. Maybe you have a chance to check this out first before you spend the money...

    Great camera and still is a industry standard in the skateboarding world!!
    I own both the hvx200 and its cooler brother hpx170, i got 200min in p2 cards 32gb and 64gb so no need for swapping and i love the mxf format on the cards never gets corrupt and is a tank. The global shutter is great but the original hvx200 is a bit weak in low light but the better hvx200a or hpx170 are quite good in low light. the bitrate is really impressive too it runs a 100 Mbps which is really great for an 20 year old camera, the gh4 runs on 200/100Mbps so it is still competitive even whit semi modern cameras. plus the hvx200 has great color space at 4:2:2 10bit which is even better then the gh4. the only down side to the hvx200 is its resolution on 1080-30p/720-60p there was a mod made by an american company that would give raw video whit 4:4:4 color at 12 bit but panasonic bought the company and shut it down i belive it was called hydra mod! the camera runs on linux so it should not be to hard to hack to be honest if anyone knows how to do that hit me up!

      How much was the 32 and 64 gb cards for you?

    • @dirtystax284
      @dirtystax284 3 місяці тому

      @@Untilimalone It depends where you look for them but they are a bit pricy, usually they go for 100 euro/dollar for 32gb and actually around the same price for the 64gb around 100-150 euro/dollar, if you look around second hand markets like facebook or your local second hand apps you might find them slightly cheaper, i got some whit cameras others i bought separately, i payed 100 euro for 64gb which to be honest sucked but at that time i only had one 32gb so it was worth it. though if you would compere the prices to 2008 its super cheap, i think my set would cost 10,000 dollars back in 2008 ...

    Yah.. 😂 I owned this camera, spent $2000 on a 2 gig p2 card.. I could only afford one.. 😂… now I wish I had never sold it but I needed money to get my Canon Xh-a1.. but also ran the red rock micro 35mm adapter with Canon FD lenses.. oh those were crazy days

      The hoops we jumped through… it all seemed so amazing until I saw I could record 1080p on a cheap SD card on a relatively massive Micro43 sized sensor with a tiny GH1 body. That was game over for the camcorders 😂

    Wow P2 takes me back. I remember going to a high end pro camera shop to buy a P2 camera for a production company I was working for back in 2008/9. We were moving away from tape and getting into the P2 card system. It was the pro model so about the size of a Sony F55 I guess and it was a great camera at that time. I didn't know they had this smaller hybrid card / tape version, it would have been a great B-Cam back then.
    BTW also noticed the channel's name change... you used to be Stronz or something like that right?
