This series of "World Around Us" documentaries from Station ATN-Sydney is TV at its best! Compare this with the utter shit Station ATN is spewing out today, and not just ATN, TCN and TEN are also guilty of throwing up shit on our TV screens. The technology may have advanced but programme standards today are well and truly down the toilet.

I always regret never having taken a trip on the Old Ghan. We traveled to Adelaide on the new Ghan about 20 years ago but didn't enjoy sitting up; still, quite an adventure. It's quicker and cheaper to fly to Adelaide these days but it isn't quite the same. If I ever win Lotto I'm going to take the family on a trip up to Darwin on the Ghan; first class of course.

I did some research back in 2012. Centenary of Titanic. It took 12 hours to fire up a boiler for use from room temp. May i ask how long a train boiler takes ?

I have watched these many times, and have only just noticed at about 15:40, one of the train crews notices they are filming and backs out of the shot.

If I am not mistaken, that is Bill Peach commentating and doing a great job with a very well written script.

"Spirit of Progress"? Hardly. Break of gauge at Albury ultimately doomed the service before the Albury to Melbourne section was standardised to 4-feet 8-1/2 inches.

Funny. I always thought Hawke trounced Howard, but at least early on in the counting, it did not look that way.

I am revisiting this video after quite a long time. I have since seen on the "Slow TV" DVD of the Ghan that there was a bridge over the fink that washed away, and then, they laid the tracks directly over the river bed. This program reads that the surveyors did not know there was a river. Not sure which one is correct.

There is a part missing here at about 7:20. There was a part where they showed footage of the rail "grave yard" in Newport Vic. (I am also the TheCamster1980).
