    Patrick you had a lot of fun on this hike
    And quite a few views
    Unfortunately most of them were covered with trees
    Thank you for bringing us along
    I know I enjoyed it

      Always fun...almost. Trees are good, when they know their place. Come along any time. Thanks carrriigsohyeah.

    I also want to say, and I'm sure your other viewers concur, that your effort to venture alone into the darkness to these remote locations to capture the beauty of the Arkansas landscape in the morning ambient light is much appreciated. As in this case, some locations are potentially dangerous and may have unforeseen perils, so I hope you have an emergency beacon. It is always comforting to know while watching the videos that the video itself shows that "he slips - he falls" did not happen, that you did not get blown off the bluff in your tent by high winds, that the bear that dropped the doo-hookey did not eat you, and that you made it out alive.

      Greatly appreciated GeoMarkus. No one has ever mentioned those observations until now. It's worth it to me to be there at sunrise, so I embrace the darkness and the deadly peril. No beacon is carried...that would ruin the risk factor, which, in my mind, is low. My wife has a map of where I'm going and I'm sure finding me would not be that difficult...just listen for random babbling with a parabolic microphone and there I'll be. It's good to hear your info on geology, because I am always wondering about rocky stuff. Great weekend to you!

      Rocks, yes...always a kid, especially the older you get. I will be glad to add more language next time. I'd like to see you try that slope of 45°. I felt it was my only safe option. If there were trees to hold on to it would have been different. I found that the knee supports do little. I had a close-up filter on my GoPro. If a trail exists and will assist me, I use it...or a road...otherwise, well you know. Thanks Chopper. Now, make me some bacon.

    That hillside you went down looked like it had a grade of at least 40%. Years ago when I hiked the BRT I remember leaving Kyle's and looking up Bear Creek wondering what that area looked liked way up there. Now I know. Don't think I'll try it. It was dry when I saw it too. Guess it takes A LOT of water to get that drainage going. Sorry about your britches. Hopefully the dirt will wash out. You should buy a pair of abisko trekking tights from Fjallraven . 😃 Bomb proof!

    • @NoTrail
      @NoTrail  8 місяців тому

      Most of the slopeage around there felt like 45°. As you've stated...a GoPro tends to mask the reality of the terrain due to the wide angle. I've never come across anything about the creek...not that I've looked, because I really don't want a preview. The rim and bluffs are quite beautiful...similar to Indian Creek. There was evidence of recent flowing water where leaves were removed. My inexpensive Wrangler briatches cleaned up nicely. I need no fancy pants Mr FancyPants. I would never buy anything with a Fjallraven or Hilleberg branding...overpriced nonsense. I'm pretty sure I could blo up a pair of those pants (blow not used cuz YooToob will censor my comment as I were a terruh wrist). Thanks SpinFjallBerg.

      @@NoTrail for the record, Susie wanted me to have those fancy pants b/c she got some for herself. She's a shopper. True they aren't cheap, but they are super comfortable and very durable out there. Dry fast when they get wet. Reenforced at the knees and butt areas. Handy when butt sliding down a hill.

    • @NoTrail
      @NoTrail  8 місяців тому

      Susie is your dresser...cool. I have 3 pairs of 5.11 Tactical pants that cost me $50 a pair that I wear in wet conditions...they do the job at a reasonable price. Wrangler cargos from Wal Mart are what I usually wear...$22.00 a pair...essentially disposable. That was the 1st time I've needed to butt slide that far, so not typically needed. @@travelingwithspinoza

    This canyon is a hell hole and not a beautiful slick-rock canyon like Indian Creek because of the geology. The steep back part of Bear Creek is formed in crappy Boone limestone. I almost died here 40 years ago when I tried to check out the bluffs from below. Part of the bluff wall broke out from under my feet and left me stranded on the bluff. I was lucky to be able to climb up the crumbly limestone to the point where you started in this video. Indian Creek is longer and there are a series of faults and geologic structures that keep the sandy dolomite of the Everton Formation and the beautiful Newton Sandstone at the surface of the creek to form the slick-rock sections. These are the formations that form the bluffs along the river. You noticed this rock in the lower part of your hike where you saw the flat layered rock that would make some nice waterfalls. In Indian Creek, the Boone Limestone and the underlying St. Joe Limestone have been dissolved and sculpted by an ancient collapsed cave system. Tunnel Falls and the giant cave shelter above it are formed in the more layered St. Joe Limestone that is riddled with caves. The tunnel hole in the side of the giant shelter is the portal that leads to the deep prehistoric-looking realm of the Boone. People always notice the going gets rougher here with the large boulders, but you do not have to go far to reach The Eye of the Needle. Here the Boone has been dissolved and sculpted by the ancient cave system into beautiful smooth rock that forms the spectacular mysterious-looking natural bridge that is surely the home of gargoyles. So, the geologic processes at work here also make the difference between this place and Bear Creek which is more typical. I avoid the Boone Limestone areas as much as possible on the Upper Buffalo. Indian Creek and Lost Valley are the exceptions due to the karst landscape development at those places.

      I was hoping you'd weigh in on this place Mark. You know, I never did like Boone Limestone. It's low-life style rock that's just shiffless and no-count. The gorge is still beautiful and I'm glad I went. I'm also glad yo did not perish 40 years ago only to become carrion for the local wildland creatures. Thanks dude.
