Why Has Panerai Made This Watch More Expensive?! | Watchfinder & Co.

  • The Luminor has been a staple of Panerai’s collection since the Italian company first opened its doors to the public in 1993, this Base the purest and simplest iteration. It’s been discontinued now-and cost around £4,000 before it was-by something that looks exactly the same but costs over £1,000 more. Why would anyone want to pay that?

    The lunatics are running the asylum. They’ve been struggling for the last few years with questionable decisions. This is just another poor one. When Tudor introduced the “in house” calibre it raised its price by 300£.

    Not to worry Paneristis, in a month's time they shall release a "Limited Edition" of this same exact watch with "Luminor" and "Panerai" swapping spots on the dial and a blue polishing cloth for only 2K more.

      Lovely watches. Over 15 in house movements now. Mini rotors and ceramic sections In specific movements to reduce maintenance and improve stability. 8 day and 10 day reserves with double and triple barrels. Panerai are really a force to be reckoned with in recent years. Im happy people keep buying rolex. It gets very boring. Also really like the latest iwc big pilots. More great in house movements.

    Heres what i dont get about the Panerai hate; when they reentered the market and started to pick up traction, they used off the shelf unitas movements, and gained popularity from being seen on the wrists of celebrities, everyone adored them. Now, they are going in house, creating some very complicated pieces like foudroyante seconds, equation of time etc, have no celebrity endorsements, have kept their unique design language, and the watch cognoscenti cant stop bashing them. They're moving forward without David Beckham or Lady Gaga hawking their products, and the love is getting less and less. They increased their prices about on par with Omega and Rolex (a smp costs $1600 new 15 years ago, its $4500 now). I just dont get it.

    You are showing an old 560, in the new ones they ditched the sandwitch dial and offer a flat dial instead (not even a painted, raised, sausage dial, just really flat). Also the new 3 day watches have 100m water resistance instead of 300m (not a screw back case, looks like a pop open one!..) and went for standard spring bars instead of the screw in bars !!! Really bad moves, this is why I would still go for an old one, otherwise you have to spend tons to get a sandwich dial that is iconic for Panerai.

      Distribution. Walk into any Kay Jewelers and you'll see one. That reputation of it being a "mall watch" killed it IMO. Snobbishness aside, anyone owning anything like a tad of exclusivity to some degree. Tag can't do that, hence the "Heuer" rebrand with requisite massive cost jump.

    Howzit folks. As always, great work - passion for the craft really shines through. A question: Is it not finally time to do a review on the PAM590? Relative to the above PAM560 (and other regular PAMs), it is a truer nod to the Egiziano beast and that all important time in Panerai’s history and really deserves a review, in my humble opinion. Needless to say, it is an absolute beauty as well (again, IMHO). But I must confess - the reasons for my request are a bit selfish... but that shouldn’t take away from why the watch deserves a review by the hand guys at WF&CO. Fingers crossed.

    Own pam 114 and pam 1312. I also have a bit old tag aquaracer, a rolex sub and a Breitling navitimer. Among them the pam 1312 is the one I wear most of time. It has sandwich dial, small blue second hand, and nice see through 3days automatic movement. I like to switch straps often and panerai has the easiest strap changing system. My pam looks on point when I wear either suit or jeans with t shirts. I see many people don’t like panerai but it has its history and unique style and design. I’m not the fan of the latest models though I don’t think panerai should be hated by ppl who don’t like their style. For the price... I think any luxury brand watches are overpriced so that’s not going to be a problem for panerai watches. I feel $1000 sneakers are more expensive than my $7500 pam1312 imho.

    Everyone will question why panerai is so expensive but not blink an eye when a submariner costs almost 9 grand. A sub is a basic steel watch just like a panerai. Price in the luxury watch world is in the eye of the beholder. No luxury watch is “reasonably priced” hence why they are luxury items.

    • @goldendawn7
      @goldendawn7 5 років тому +7

      Dude, thank you for a reasonable opinion on this. $4-5k is the cost of admission for the status symbol watch club, its not like they're selling you a miyota in a chinese stamped case for this price. Wanna talk about over priced? Look at the IWC mark xviii. $6k or so for a 2892 powered pilot watch. "But iwc heavily modifies the movement to their specs!" Yeah than why cant i find a single piece of literature about HOW they modify it if they're so proud of what they do to justify the price?

      Service costs are a lot more on Panerai overtime. Rolex is almost universally serviceable with excellent retained value through a 10 or even 15/20 time frame.. Panerai is soft market used compared to “equivalent” Rolex models. The Rolex is a better watch to own, you almost cannot deny that.

    I entered watch world after seeing Panerai in How It's Made. Back then I did not know how much it cost so I tried to buy one for 100 or little bit more, but then I found out about how expensive watches are, at least Panerai and other famous brands.
    For some time there was nothing that I liked more than Panerai, the design of that Fiddy case, massive straps, and their crown guard is simply stunning.
    Now I can appreciate many more different designs, few years means a lot and I have learned so much about watches, also few cheap Panerai homages and their bad build quality had its role in moving away from Panerai.
    The price of Panerai watches was never a problem for me because I can not afford one, the same counts for any other expensive brand so I do not share this rant about Panerai being so expensive, for me they all are very expensive. Actually I could afford it technically but simply do not want to spend that much on a wrist watch.
    I like Panerai, it has that famous Italian design and it is simply different, recognizable among many other famous but somewhat regular designs. At the same time it has that famous Italian idiotism when it comes to doing a business. Just look at their car industry, they make the most brilliant cars on the planet but when it comes to product range, business decisions, and clear plan of what they are doing actually, they are the worst.

    • @Ian-bq7gp
      @Ian-bq7gp Рік тому

      I totally agree, I machined the sandwich dials in one of my jobs, yes they are a quality accurate watch face down to One hundred of a mm tolerance but Cartier longines or even certina were quality too and I've had a classique longines quartz for over 21 years and it's excellent and has same ETA Swatch owned movement as certina cheaper watches that are far more able to take abuse day to day than any of the other ETA, or any other older manual movements including Rolex. that's why many companies went bankrupt in the 1970s. Grand Seiko are really great quality without all the supply monopoly, name scandal of Rolex and Patek Phillip. There's so much snob value but Jaeger le couture , VC and even AP seem to be better value but maybe some models would be less good as an appreciating investment. What a con.

    • @Ian-bq7gp
      @Ian-bq7gp Рік тому

    • @sirbuftontufton5846
      @sirbuftontufton5846 5 років тому +6

      No, you're not alone. The finished ETA 6497 has a long history of reliability, is chronometer accurate (and chronometer certified in the version with a seconds hand), and looks gorgeous. The P5000 looks plain, and the 8 day power reserve comes at the expense of isochronism, with widespread reports of 1-2 minutes of gain in the first 24 hours when fully wound. Unless you really hate winding watches (then why buy a manual), or you're one of the "in-house is always better" brigade, the old movement is preferable.

    • @yoshyoka
      @yoshyoka 5 років тому +1

      I am for in house movements only if they are innovative, in some way better (function or aesthetics) or have some unique characteristics. Mechanical watches are a celebration of history, ingenuity and mechanical virtuosity. In this sense the movement reflects the whole point of it.
      I don't see the point of new "in house" movements that merely clone existing ones or, even worse, are engineered on the base of existing ones but optimized only in terms of ease of production. Panerai in this case does not only tries to sell us a "cheaper" version of the same but also insults us by charging us more.

Would you do a video on What Happened after the Panerai Fad? I do think it is a good thing as only Panerai lover and enthusiast are the one that truly appreciate the pieces. Not the wannabe and trend chasers as it used to be.

    I want you to review all the watches. All of them. From A-Z.
    Okay, okay. My preference is to see reviews about IWC watches first. You can do the others later.

    Who cares about an in house movement? I don't get it.
    You can beat a solar quartz in terms of accuracy, reliability, etc.

    • @goldendawn7
      @goldendawn7 5 років тому

      Its honestly due to the lack of options for off the shelf movements. This video is correct about the fact most watch companies used brought in movements for most of the history of mechanical watches, but the difference between then and now is there were a lot of options for 3 hand movements back then, up until recently the vast vast majority of time only movements utilized the eta 28xx. I seriously doubt there would be this big bias for in house if there were more high quality swiss made alternatives to the 28xx. I think we're getting to a good place with watch movements, where higher end companies are going in house to justify their prices, tudor is lending their time only out to breitling for starters, Eterna is getting back into selling 3rd parties their movements, Vaucher is a high end alternative, soprod is selling movements, etc. Basically getting to a point where it wont be a 99% given that your watch has a 2824/92 .

    Panerai has offered a wide variety of in-house movements for many years. This is not breaking new ground or “finally” establishing them as legit.

      @GetOuttaTheJohnBoy 5 років тому +1

      @jason starek Watch art sci has an interesting video on the Richemont group's "in-house" movements you may find useful. Seems like most things swiss watch related, all is not what it seems. personally I don't understand the value of an in house versus off the shelf, though I do value a hand-finished movement. But most in house are not hand finished, or even well finished. In this day and age a Rolex is finished as well as any other generic robot produced movement and Rolex isn't busy extolling the virtues of purchasing their watch for the in-house movement value. Here,s the rub; No one buys a mechanical watch for it's accuracy, save raving lunatics. A good looking, tough, long lasting, reasonably accurate watch will win every time, which explains why the eta 2824-2 and the Rolex 3135 are at the top of the heap.

      You can buy a submariner for similar money... if your buying a dive watch, you want it to be at least waterproof, Panerai are a bit of a joke now imo. Shame as I like the design, particularly of the base model. Too big for me though. Really. If they where half the money I’d think about it.

    They are really cool watches, but i would never buy it for that price. Also I don't understand the inhouse movement choice, it's not coherent with Panerai's history and it seems they did it only to raise the price

    Nothing ruins a dial more than the brand forcing a line of text on there that details a marketing feature. Is 8 Days really necessary? People who are thinking about buying the watch will already know that. Baume & Mercier does the same thing with their Clifton Baumatic.

    For a military watch, it seems rather poorly equipped. Then again it was the Italians .... just surprised that it doesn't move anti-clockwise ..... and then give up entirely after 18 months.
