    One thing I've learned is just as there's buyer's remorse, there is also seller's remorse. Many decide to sell a watch only to kick themselves later down the road. And sometimes they even offer to buy the watch back. Or hunt for another one elsewhere. It is also true that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and your story about the rugged dude wearing the more rugged watch reminded me of that. If you didn't already own it, had he been wearing yours I bet you still would have lusted after it. Both are great watches from a brand loaded with history. Neither one could be classified as a "mistake" purchase. Not by any means. YMMV. Keep up the fun content. I liked the video even before you reminded me!

    Bought new Luminor Chronograph Pam01109 at an AD (Nov 2023)....my favorite daily now even over my sea-dweller anniversary. I want to say that I have wanted a Panerai for years, not necessarily this model, and finally pulled the trigger (also an impulse buy). I actually get a lot of compliments on it (especially from watch enthusiasts). The distinctive case you can see from across the room is really the key to these watches (sort of like the Rolex date bubble) but the overall look and feel is just lux/high quality.

    Funny about what you said about grade 2 titanium. I had the original blue pelagos that uses grade 2. I remember telling someone that it honestly felt like plastic at times. Like, it was so light, but there was something about the metal that almost felt fake. I couldn't quite describe it. Then I later had a Grand Seiko snowflake, and that titanium was luxurious and soft... wild what a difference it makes.

    I was a watch collector for years but the prices are so high now and all these watch channels in my feed encourage me to buy $7000+ watches on a regular basis. How many people can do this? Don’t you have other expenses like mortgage payments or your kid’s college tuition? Feels like a bubble and I’m out of the game. Such a shame because I still have my grails.

    177 all the way! You can have the Unitas 6497 movement serviced by any competent watchmaker. As we know, Panerai never made watches (except for the Egiziano) but only supplied the dials. Rolex made the case and movement for Panerai. Also used were Cortebert and Angelus movements so it certainly would have made sense for Giuseppe Panerai (pretending he was alive and still owned Panerai today) to equip the watches with a unitas 6497 movement. Let’s not forget that these were bare-bones military watches made for human torpedo frogmen!

    I’ve had my PAM 422 since 2015 and it still never gets old which I think is down to the rose gold hands, the acutely domed sapphire and how it refracts light at different angles on the hands makes them glow and float above the dial in a way over yet to see with other watches. Funny thing is, I never noticed this until after I bought and I’m so happy I did.

    Keep the 915! An in-house movement with eight days of power reserve is phenomenal! No doubt that it’ll cost a bit to service, but that’s high horology for you

      I own the 915. Great watch!!!

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 Рік тому +6

      It’s not a high horology piece. Power reserve isn’t a complication, it’s easily the most over rated spec on the market. A massive PR only matters if you never wear the watch. Many Panerai don’t even have a seconds hand let alone a date window- so how hard is it to set the time? Either way in order to get the full power reserve time, you’ve got a couple options- one is you need to wear the bell out of your watch for several days, for a full work day and then some, or you need to do a whole lot of time winding the watch. All that just so you can put it away for a week and still come back to it running? Way overrated. The time spent winding a watch with such a PR, you could have set the date in time and been on to other things faster.
      Don’t buy a watch based on specs alone.

    • @waterfordrs22
      @waterfordrs22 Рік тому

      @@albertopolini1970 If you’re wearing it actively for almost ten hours a day, sure it’s going to wind itself sufficiently to make it to the next day. That would be the case even if the power reserve was something more modest such as say 50-70 hours. No problem. You are wearing the watch daily and possibly relatively active. For someone who simply rotates through several watches a day or week (not my style) they would likely need to spend those three or four minutes winding the watch by hand. It’s a bit of a false economy if the watch is mostly sitting.

    I've learned over the years : my buying decision is mostly derived from the specs (case weight, caliber, etc.). However, what I ware is ALWAYS motivated by feelings. 177 all the way baby 😉

    I too get the buyers remorse. I recently returned a piece, a very expensive piece at that. I kept it in its case and I didn't remove any of the plastic protection coatings on the bracelet, case or back. Luckily for me I am a good client of the business so they gladly refunded me and happily took the watch back. 2 days later I went back in and purchased my first choice , so it's safe to say go with your gut and if you are doubtful at purchasing like I was don't do it just for the impulsive action.

    I've been hunting a PAM177 for years, it's like the perfect Panerai to me. I've owned 7 Panerai's at this point. I love titanium! I had a 564 and loved it. But I bought a 915 over a year ago, and it has pretty much ended my hunt for the perfect PAM. Mine's the first series (V), with the display case back. The P.5000 is definitely not as nice to look at as the OP XI, but I still enjoy what I can see of it. Plus, sapphire display backs always make watches more comfortable to me, as the glass tends to stick to your skin and prevent the watch from flopping around (very important especially with a 44mm Bettarini steel case!). I bought a Zero (PAM000) a few months ago, thinking that might be "The One", but I still prefer the 915, so the Zero will be leaving soon. I also ABSOLUTELY LOVE the 8 day movements! You simply cannot beat a mechanical watch that runs for over a week whether you wear it or not (like in rotation), and it is an absolute joy winding her up every Sunday morning, which has become my ritual. Probably the only PAM that could replace my 915 would be a first series 510, P.5000 sandwich dial (P series I think it was), but I doubt I'll ever find one of those.

    Thanks for making this video. I’m a small time collector with some pretty nice pieces. I bought my personal “holy grail” a year ago with the Rolex GMT Batgirl (terrible nickname). Sadly, people like us never stop looking to the next watch so here I am. Years ago, my wife bought me a leather strapped Sinn aviator watch. Black strap, case and face. I love it but I’ve also been wanting a Panerai but something different. Maybe the new Radiomir Quaranta with the white face. I’m not sure about the overlay face. Maybe a stainless case gray face Luminor. I JUST DONT KNOW. Sometimes I’ll buy an homage watch just to get the feel before dropping a ton on a watch.
    Ok, I’ll stop rambling. I really appreciate your take on watches. To be as knowledgeable about them without the pomposity is a gift! Please keep it up!

    I don't see it as a buyer's remorse. I see the discovery of the 177 as a different experience altogether and should be separate from your ownership of the 915. The range of Panerai watches is so vast that you'd get a different kind of feel with different ones, even with the same case designs but with different materials or even finishes. (You should try one of those PAMs with brushed Brunito steel. Still steel but feels and wears very differently). I suggest keeping and enjoying both for a while.

    I bought my luminor GMT on a steel bracelet and it matches to Panerai database but I never opened it or looked inside it. It’s on the steel bracelet. I personally love it because it has a big and boisterous Italian personality just like me. Over time the polish on the face has maintained its glimmer and shine while the casing gets scuffed from use over the years and dulls. I haven’t tried any other straps because the steel bracelet is rare and lovely.

    Had a 176 for years (similar watch, without second hand of the 177). Issue I had was it's a one-trick pony. Polished/brushed watches have more variety in appearance when swapping straps. And on the strap point, finding Ti buckles isn't the easiest, and they never come on or with a strap, even from the vast majority of the best makers. That said, a simple fiberglass brushing makes it look new again, and the patina is killer as it develops. So, I'd have one again today without hesitation; just not as my primary. Daily now is the Palm Beach 466, which ticks most boxes for me other than the painted dial.

    Agreed that you have to experience many different watches to learn what your tastes really are. You discover your tastes and then sometimes they change and you have to discover that too. Both watches are great. Slight nod to the 177 because of the decreased weight.

    I've been looking at the Panerai Submersible Blu Notte with metal band for $11K-ish. I think it is a 42mm. I have a 6" wrist and it looked fine. But I'm older and already own a white gold Rolex sub (Smurf) and Patek Aquanaut and Cartier Pasha. Not counting my wife's Reverso, Rolex, etc. So far I'm fighting the urge.

    I can relate to your progression into PAMs. I too love the 44mm luminor in Ti. It just makes it more wearable. I have the PAM116 base dial in tobacco. Relatively produced in much smaller numbers and the only Panerai that has remained through the years in my collection. Congrats on the 177!

    Get the PAM177 - hard to beat titanium (pun intended). BTW - the grass will always seem greener on the other side. I've learned how to admire from afar and not necessarily need to buy a watch that I fancy.

    @omiq7761 Рік тому

    I'm now in the process of letting go of my Luminor Due 42mm, a true jewel and a piece of art, but I want something more rugged - I don't want my PAM to be limited just as a dress watch. After a deep dive into PAMs, I've found a 111 that could be mine for a nice price. Note, I plan to wear this mainly on summer season, meaning I can wear t-shirts and other light clothing so that the bulkiness will not interfere with the winter jacket's sleeve or anything, and the shiny steel case will have it's opportunity to glimmer in the sun.
    For winter I have thin Panerai inspired microbrand watch - a titanium Andersmann Classic, darker tone and warmer to the skin. Having a 177 as a winter watch could be an (expensive) option as well, maybe in the future? :D

    I have a PAM 88 and an 1104…..I was ready to sell the 1104 after buying an IWC Big Pilot transitional piece (new dual Peleton spring with the old 5002 face) only 115 in the world. Then an IWC miramar top gun ceramic triple date and to round it off a Rolex Sub. However I put a thin dark brown alligator strap which feels really light and a great look. I always get compliments on my Panerai.

    As a 177 owner, I sold my original 105 Base model because I also fell in love with the titanium case and the ability to brush out blemishes. I am now 15 years into the 177 and I will never ever let go of this watch. I am sure I would feel the same way about the 176 (same watch, without the second hand).

    Two excellent videos (915 and 177). I don’t think you have buyers remorse. I think you’re becoming Paneristi. You like the 915 so much, you immediately start looking for your next Panerai.
    I found this really useful. I was thinking a lot about getting a 915 and tried one on (loved it) but there was also a 564 Titanium 8 Days for sale which I was watching too. The sellers discounted that this week and it was too good to resist any longer and it’s now on my wrist. Love it! Can’t now justify a 915… yet…

    Both watches look awesome for different reasons the first has the shiny new look and will great as long a you keep it looking shiny and new ,but when it gets dinged and scratched it will look it’s appeal , but eventually it will develop what my South African fiancé refers to as ( hoeding) I’ve surely spelled it wrong) patina ,mileage, attitude . The titanium one already has it , its the truck that you got for 500 bucks and has 500,000 miles on it and still goin strong !!!

    I'm currently deep into Panerai research, and it's actually beyond confusing with all the references, so it's understandable that the PAM177 slipped past you. I always thought a 44mm Pam on my barely 7-inch wrist would be too big, but having recently tried on a 45mm Rad I realised I was worrying about nothing! Ideally I'd prefer a 42mm Luminor but I don't care for the 1950 case shape, so I've narrowed my options down to a PAM111 or PAM183, both sandwich dial, exhibition case back, same movement, effectively the same watch just Luminor vs Radiomir, but the Titanium PAM177 is also a contender. The hunt continues...
    My view - Keep the PAM177... because it's a better looking / feeling watch 🙂

      I really want a 1226 or 2223 - but just think Panerai is living in the past - at $6500-7000 my order would be in - just don’t have the value of Rolexes (yeah, I know I can’t get one at MSRP) in the $9000-11000 range.

    I definitely understand what you are saying about trying a new watch strap. I have a favorite watch bracelet with straight end links. And whatever watch I put it on, in my collection, suddenly becomes my favorite watch. I think I like the bracelet almost more than the watches.

  • @ThePostmillennial

    This is where getting too much into the weeds of watch collecting can be counterproductive as it takes away from the enjoyment of a piece. The new watch (the one you have) is epic. Sure, there might be a couple pieces out there that suit your taste a tiny bit better, but so be it. Buy a few more straps and enjoy the one you have, and admire the others from afar. They’re all very good watches. Personally, I prefer the polished stainless steel but wouldn’t bork at a titanium one either. 6 to one, half a dozen the other.

  • @MustafaMuafa

    They both look nearly the same! However, my personal taste will definitely take me to the shinier watch, no doubt. Although I would personally prefer a thinner case for sure.

    I wanted 915 exactly because of movement and fact that is polished. But I was puzzled cause in some cases I saw 915 with open case back. Until i catch the 915 with open case back in official Panerai boutique. So I needed to buy it and do not regret it! Love the watch
    it seems they made only 2000 pcs of 915 with open case back
    do not sell it. just buy another 177 if u love it so much ;)
