hey Fil, thx for such a great review & explanation of what i do. i do want to mention that i found these 2 guys on instagram. Gustavo (drums) flew in from Spain, i believe, & Gjergj (bass/background vocals) flew in from Albania.
we did a coffee table rehearsal in my hotel room that morning & hit the stage with a little sound check 30 minutes before the show & it was instant ROCK! even the Dead Daisies (the headliner & also friends of mine) were like, “where did you find these guys???”. when i told them Instagram they were all “WTF??”. i still feel fortunate that i could deliver this kind of performance with 2 awesome dudes i just met. have a kick ass day.
Thanks!
@@wingsofpegasus So now you're getting a good read on who X really is. He's everywhere.
How could any fan of Rock music not just love Phil X? He is such a COOL, BADASS musician!
Spit on brother!!
He's just stupid talented, and always a fun time.
Phil x one of the best showmanship on what you can do with a guitar. No whammy bar no special effects. No special guitar.
One pickup. The dude is excellent...
You can purchase his signature guitar now.
👍
He’s such a ridiculously good player, on most guitarists lists of among the best in the business. Just a great showman as well.
👍
Phil is awesome, but he's also actually hilarious. One of the top guitarists around these days. He's on more albums than most people realize. Great studio musician.
Impossible not to appreciate the expertise and yet child like energy of Phil X. I love the fact that he is anti-gizmo. It's about hitting the strings.
Phil X is a madman on guitar! Always looks like he’s having a so much fun-love the glances between he and the drummer grinning during the performance! 🤘🏻😉🎸
👍
I'm almost 63 and you nail all my influences and wild favorites. Thank you
No problem!
OK Fil. You got me to subscribe finally. The fact you know of Mr. X, did it. He's an acquaintance of mine through two friends who grew up with him and learned guitar from him, and with him. The dude is genuine, energetic, always thinking cool stuff, and humble. In daily life he is pretty much what you see on the screen. He doesn't do drugs, nor drink excessively. He's showed up at some house party jams that I've been at, and really livened things up. Guitar players in attendance are usually stunned when they witness a player that is levels above. The elusive, almost unattainable, un-describable, etheric presence of raw talent.
Cool!
I used to see him play when he was about 18-19 he had a band Sidinex his name backwards , this was back in the 80s in some local clubs , he was killing it then we all new this guy was going to go on a musical journey , we still check him out when he’s in town and does a couple gigs . I love his attitude and he remembers where he came from , fans and small clubs 👍
That was excellent! What a rocker a phenomenal talent and his got it all, voice, stage presence, and guitar wizardry! And energy he delivers while playing....awesome!! Over 50... looks like he’s found the fountain of guitar youth! Brilliant vid Fil!!😀😀😀🤘🤘🤘
Thanks!
Phil X is a treasure 🔥🔥
You are killing me Fil! Phil X has vintage guitar tutorials I’ve been watching for years. Crazy talent and a hell of a lot of fun. Definitely a guy who would be fun to have a pint with! Great call!
Cool!
first time hearing this guy,Amazing!
Check out Phil X and the Drills cover of Back Sabbath"s " Fairies wear Boots" it is amazing. Like Phil says " 3 guys making rock n roll". Spot on Phil spot on.
Phil really can play just about anything. He's also a stickler for tone. Watched him develop over years with the Drills and giving demo's on vintage guitars 'Phil X Friday' with FrettedAmericana.
👍
Phil X has been one of my guitar heroes for years. Very cool to see you doing an analysis video about him. Thanks.
👍☺
Fil,you never cease to amaze😀
Thanks!
Phil X is F'ing awesome!
NICE! Finally a Phil X video. Awesome player and great vocalist. If your feeling blue, watch practically any performance video or interview of Phil X and his energy will pull you out of your funk.
👍
Miss Him back here in Mississauga, Ontario Canada where he use to play Sunday Jams @ His Dad's Resteraunt. Those were the Days, My Friend....Cheers Phil. You're the BEST!
☺
I used to hold a little walkman sized tape player, with a speaker, up to my pickups and it came out perfectly through the amp.... For when my stereo wasn't loud enough my 75w amp would dial it up to 12! (Spinal Tap only went to 11!)
I stood not more than 6' away from Phil when he came with The Drills to the O2 Academy in Birmingham 2013, playing double headline with Dorje and was totally & completely in awe of his musical prowess. Really enjoyable monster player !
Cool!
Probably one of the single most intuitive guitarists I have ever seen... and I have seen some of the greatest
A really super good analysis Fil, love it when you light up over a style of playing that hits home for you!
Thanks Greg!
Saw him with his band the Drills at the Boileroom in Guildford UK a few years ago..... he was EXACTLY like this! Brilliant.
Cool!
Phil X is an absolutely killer player. Hell of a handshake on him too! He came out and talked to folk in the queue outside a Drills gig in Glasgow a few years ago and shook everyone's hands. Thought he'd squeeze my hand off! :-)
Haha cool!
Love how he went from one song to another like the flintstones. Just flawless the way he did that.
😂👍
I've been waiting for this video for some time now. Thanks so much Fil! Phil X, imo, is one of the best, hardest working guitarists out there! He's got an awesome attitude and work ethic, and can hang with people half his age! So much energy! You never see him play with tons of effects, or even a whammy bar. He always delivers a great performance. I've watched so many of his videos and never saw one that was mediocre. He seems to give 110% every time! He's not out to steal the show. He gives it his all, for the song, whether playing for his own band or playing as a hired gun, as with Bon Jovi. I'd love to see him live. I know I'd get my money's worth! I wish I was half as good!👍😎🎸🎶
No problem!
Shared the 'boards' with you over time and dig this comment.
@@vmat1000 thanks!😎
That was Crazy Good, Loved this, Rock On !
👍
That was great! What a performance!
👍
First saw Phil, on fretted Americana, showing vintage guitars and playing them. Super technical guy. And yes actually makes Bon Jovi worth going to see. He does age well, he's like the Canadian Sammy Hagar as far as ageing goes. Born the same year as me so he has to be cool! Haha. The drills is a pretty good Band too
Cool!
This is great getting drunk music and i'm almost there! Thanks Fil for an epic jam.
👍
He was great on Triumph’s Edge of Excess album
Wow ! What a showman and a technical virtuoso! Love your videos, thanks for educating and making us aware of these great guitarists 🙏👍👁👁🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
👍☺
I used to go to local bars around my neighbourhood when he was just starting to play in the bars .We knew then he would go far,He still comes back and plays locally in small clubs .Remembers his roots, says alot about someone.
Cool!
Excellent performer & analysis. Thanks, Fil! 🤘😎❤️🔥
No problem!
Again.... another excellent breakdown Fil .... I'm a massive Phil X fan, I love how he makes any song he plays 'his own'. I also love his original music with The Drills.... " I wish my beer was as cold as your heart" shows his sense of humour while taking his music seriously.
Thanks!
This cat can play anything! He even gives a nod to Gilligans Island at 6:58 that was awesome🤟🏻
👍
Can't get enough of Phil X. He's fun, energetic and makes it look easy. Apparently, he was a session musician as he explains in another video interview. He's got a great sense of humor too, He seems like a down to earth type of guy. Very cool. Great analysis Fil. 🎸👍
Thanks!
I've been watching Phil X for several years now , the guy is an unstoppable force of nature; he has so much energy , I never realised that he was only 1 year younger than myself ! (LOL)
😅
2:15 when the fast and precise bouzouki lessons that he took at 18 kicks in
Awesome I think everybody that loves good old rock and roll should check out Phil X.
👍
The Flintstones..lol. This guy is a trip & a half. Beat It, Crazy Train
👍
Where to begin. Phil X is fantastic. Lost count of how many times he borrowed pieces from others and made it work! His playing reminds me of Jeff Spicoli grown up! Rock On Fil! 🤘
👍
Wow!!! I have not followed him at all - love this!!!
👍
If You're not familare with some of the melodies he is playing here one might think it all one song! that the real cool part of this performance He blends it all together! thaks for another analysis video Fil,
👍
Fil, he also does a good job changing the volume control on the guitar, playing the rhythm and lead at a different volume
Great ! Seen his demo vids for years.
👍
go phil go go!!!! phil is in japan now!
Cool!
Another great video. I've been watching Phil X for years on frettedamericana. Dude is a maniac. I gotta say, Phil X is a bit of a unicorn... He is a born showman, has tons of energy, killer chops, the heart of a child, and he can sing too. Love the way he starts his solo with the Flintstones, then Gilligan's Island theme songs, then he nails the EVH Beat It solo without a Tremolo(!), and on to Randy Rhoads Crazy Train solo... Amazing how he makes it all so entertaining.
Yeah!
Phil X was on Jonesy's jukebox KLOS and he was great! The video is here on UA-cam!
Thanks for sharing!
👍
Great video, Fil!
Thanks!
America Woman was recorded by The Guess Who
Fil!
Great video as always, thanks.
There is one GLARING omission in the artists you've covered, so I'm pointing it out now so you can fix it. The Everly Brothers. The were hugely influential in the early days of rock n roll.
Thanks!
Thank you Fil for showing me new and great guitarists. Good shit. 🤟
Ever thought of mike Campbell, Tom pettys guy since mudcrutch.
No problem!
I know a good guitarist when i see one. Been following Phil for years.
👍
THE FLINTSTONES!! LOLOLOLOOL
Okay watch hired gun documentary. He's in it. You really learn a lot about the music industry.
Love Phil X!
I wondered if he was in that video...I'll have to watch it. Phil X is an incredible guitarist! One of the best!👍😎🎸🎶
Derek St Holmes is also in "Hired Gun," one of the best singer-guitarists in rock history, and the guy that essentially helped make Ted Nugent famous with his singing and composition work.
👍
I was amazed finding out. There's only a few people in the world that wrote every piece of music we all listen to.
Ouh..!! So speed and hard game..ll nfury makes the guitar smoke..!!💥
Awesome review. PhilX is a tall glass of Holy Water. Not everyone talks about him but we’ve all had a taste and blessed from it. Till my next exorcism, Rock w/ ❤️. Your Holy Father, POPE
Nice analysis. I can’t imagine what you’d say if he were performing this at his standard tempo (much faster). Phil’s Medley of Solos is dynamite. And he puts so much of his body into his playing the guy needs a “spash zone”. You WILL get hit with hair.
he is a fantastic performer
👍
🤘🤘🤘 great video 🤘🤘🤘
that's what i call show man of the year 🎸🤘👍 & great 🎸style
👍
Great performance He can play the guitar. Yes, I notice him playing Beat it, American Woman, and The Flintstones and I am not sure if I missed any others.
👍
Like button pressed. Another guy i've never heard of... He's gooooood. Band aint bad either..
Thanks!
Phil X has a lot of great videos on UA-cam. I love his cover of Little Wing (UA-cam title "Phil X Jams - Hendrix Little Wing 2011"). All the UA-cam videos that are titled "Phil X Jams - xxxxxxx 2011" are awesome.
Yes indeed. I love the cover of Highway Star. Those have excellent video quality, board sound feed, and "in yo face".
I used to watch all his fretted Americana guitar review videos. Best guitar reviews on the internet.
Me to!
@@davespringer777 One of his leading - ideology ? - on guitars in fretted americana is that you can play any music on any guitar. He has had a band of his own as well, The Drills if my memory serves me.
@@davespringer777 Yep. That's where I first saw him. I love the one where he plays Babe I'm Gonna Leave you while singing TNT (I had to look it up and watch it again - it's the review of the 1951 Gretsch). Such a fun guy to watch.
I'm not sure of the exact app Phil X uses on his phone but the etherophone app does something similar if you want to try it.
Phil is stupidly talented hahaha. I was able to see Bon Jovi in 2018 and Phil was just insane! He can even play Eruption without tapping… He taught himself how to play it by picking every note just as a practice exercise!
Good pick again Fil. Thanks
Phil X was off my radar. Sure makes this song his own. Which is great because most everybody who tries to be Jimi Hendrix fails. I always admire guys who can pull quotes up at will, and insert them kind of comically into a song. I can never think to do it. I'm too busy hanging on for dear life
👍
Have been watching Phil for years now on youtube... (Phil x)... His series of Fretted Americana was a guitar geeks dream. I have seen interviews recently where ai think the new fame is catching up with him.. I hope he stays Planted in reality... good video .
Thanks!
Just found out about Phil X on U Tube. The guy is a bad ass guitarist.
👍
great jacket haha
Phil X - Yeah Baby - Thanks Fil!
👍
i think i even heard some 'giligan's island' in there - (a ludicrous american sit-com from the 60's) after the 'flintstones'. lol.
Yeah!
Very nice
👍
Not a big fan of B Jovi, but have been diggin on Phil for bout a year he's killer. I've picked up Real Cool riffs and licks . I once told him I could play the backing rithym guitar parts that he missing he said okay we'll have Phil X and Mitch Y ...
Thanks Fil Yer The Man🤘 ROCK
In his younger days, he would do cartwheels onstage (with the guitar!!)
Don't know if he still does that.
He's been amazing since he was a teenager.
Had a band called Sidenex (his last name backwards).
Exciting stuff Fil. It looks like his guitar has seen many battles. It also has no inlays on the fretboard.
👍
DON'T KNOW WHAT I Just SAW But I LOVE IT
👍
First became aware of Phil when I heard his guest solo on a song by (largely forgotten by all but me and the members) Frozen Ghost. That would have been '88. I quite enjoyed the solo, although it didn't strike me at the time as overly impressive. Quite a talented guy, though! Glad to learn more about him. And...he earns geek cred with me, bearing not just an X-men tattoo, but also Gatchaman! And at the same time I begrudge him his full head of hair at 2 years my senior. So not fair!
Now, knowing him as a Canadian, that makes me think of a couple other lesser-known guys from the Great White North who you might want to check out: Derry Grehan of Honeymoon Suite and Rik Emmett of Trimuph. Emmett is well-know from his work with that band, but I wonder how many people know how impressive he is with CLASSICAL pieces!
👍
Definitely entertaining
👍
I’ve heard of him.I like the scuffed guitar.
Yes!🎸👍🥁🦃
🤘
The App he uses at the beginning is called "Bebot" which you can d´load for free ;-)
Awesome 👍😂🥁🦃🤘
👍
ROCK ON BROTHER
🤘
Happy thanksgiving fil
Thanks Glenn, you too!
Super nice guy.
👍
Fil - George Lynch told me to tell you Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks! You too!
I've been watching these videos of Phil X for years. He's a true wildman with an encyclopedic knowledge of rock and roll.
Don't know if you've seen these before Fil, but here's couple of Phil X videos with some interesting instruments and lots of laughs:

Thanks!
HELLO Fil, You might be interested in looking at Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins playing "Summertime". It's astonishing in it's own way.
Thanks!
Kiss and smile boys, kiss and smile
Phukn awesome! ☝ 😱
👍
hi Fil. thanks for another great breakdown. check out quinn sullivan. he’s about 18 yrs old. went to school with my son and i work with his mum at a factory in new bedford ma. usa. he picked up a guitar around 5 yrs old and never looked back. lots if stuff on youtube. black napkins comes to mind.
kindest regards-scott
Thanks!
Love these analysis videos. This is so cool. If it is possible, I hope you can do an analysis video featuring Geoff Whitehorn. Can you do Repent Walpurgis, with Procol Harum and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra? Geoff Whitehorn does some amazing guitar work there. Cheers Fil!
Thanks!
I am glad Phil X has a great gig now, but I sure miss him on the UA-cam channel Fretted America demoing vintage guitars. He is a ball of energy.
👍
Love it but you know what? I can appreciate a guitarist such as yourself, and I like the quality of your singing voice. You are too cool, you know your stuff..
Thanks!
